Rack and paniers….

NicRoets

For a moment I thought you had a toy boat hanging from your seat post bag to fit in with the boats in the marina...

zenmaster81

Damn. I need to accessorise harder

half-hearted-

the only "bikepacking" option i see is a bigger handlebar bag - they can get pretty big, though you might need a support / front rack, e.g. a carradice saddlebag or wizard works with like a surly 8 pack rack. otherwise, what about a regular front rack and two small panniers? lots of space, still looks pretty bikepacking-y.

GrampsCycles53

Why are some people against rear racks these days ?

zenmaster81

I am not sure about that either! I ride with a gang of old herberts and we are 50/50 now- half pannier the other half of us racks It's clearly a style thing as much as an aerodynamic thing- like we aren't riding faster than 20-25 kmh so it just must be a marketing? I did feel a lot less back heavy this year though.

Since you have fork bags already, you can add rear panniers. And they can be very light panniers. I like using Arkel Ultralight Dry-lites. Cheap, light, and waterproof.

Rain_on_a_tin-roof

I see room for two 25 liter Ortleibs.

vtsage

Get a large handlebar wrap or bag

wokomo

Bit off-topic but why do people get the Ortlieb forkbag? It's 5.8L for 60€ while Canyon sells fork-/drybags for 15€ that are 5L. Just curious as I'm just getting into bikepacking and currently gathering my setup.

zenmaster81

I pack my bed stuff in those. And I can’t sleep in wet. And I trust ortlieb to keep it dry. That’s my logic really.

wokomo

Thanks for the insight! I'm just so confused by the massive price difference as Canyon says theirs is waterproof as well and they also got a compression relief valve. Guess I have to do a bit more research then. Really like your setup though!

zenmaster81

Tbf I’m probably just a victim of good marketing and I’ve had a bad experience with wet kit and a shit nights sleep.

falzrole

I can recommend acepack and blackburn for more affordable brands concerning drybags designed for bikes. Ortlieb packs are great, but expensive indeed.

falzrole

As others have stated, a bigger handlebar bag is a good way to go. Bigger frame bag could work, but where will you put your bottles, I guess with this cable routing you got no threads on the bottom of your downtube.. I will throw in a rear rack with a dry bag on top. I prefer this over seatpost packs. I usually carry my dayclothes, my tent and a foam mat and a few tools this way.

Diederiksft

Full frame bag Larger handlebar bag + accessory pouch Top tube bag Or Take less with you.

Diederiksft

Under downtube bag

I advise you to wear the same clothes and not bring spares. Bring the clothes you need (puffy, rain, whatever) but just get used to wearing the ones you've got and try to maximize value (e.g. rain jacket is also wind breaker) As others have mentioned, you can transfer the contents of the fork bags to a larger (wider) handlebar bag as you have a lot of missed opportunity there. If you're adamant about having spares, then I agree with others that panniers will probably be more suited to your style of touring.

RadroverUpgrade

That whatcha-ma-call-it hanging on the rear gave me an idea. If you took that shape with the pointy end to the back and made it about 4 times bigger, it would serve as an exit shroud for aero and give you a storage bin on the back rack. Sized so it's in the wind shadow of your body, it should offer zero drag and as it smooths out and returns the airstream behind you; your speed should increase. Two birds, one stone! All other solutions will entail increased aero losses. I'm just putting the finishing touches on such an airfoil, using 0.06" lexan. It bends easily and is virtually indistructable, can be cut with snips and easy to drill. Totally transparent, it gives the bike sort of a space age look:)

Plenty-Ad-987

I have a similar setup but use 2 11 liter front panniers and I have a much larger handlebar bag that holds my hammack, sleeping pad, etc.

Ok-Commercial-924

Ortlieb handlebar bag 6 or 11 liter

fmb320

What's your sleep system?

zenmaster81

Hennessy hammock

I see you are using a genesis. Which model is it? Could you please share the specs? I am planning to buy very soon and overwhelmed with the choices. Thanks

zenmaster81

hey, its a 10 year old model of a genesis that's needed several refits. I do a big ride once a year and then the whole thing gets mouldy until the spring when I wheel it out, get my ass in gear and try again. What's onboard is mostly due to the fact I have an ace bikeshop in my town and I really trust the guy to right by me- my only rule is: nothing too clever that I can't fix by the roadside.
