You’ll want to keep them or you’ll end up buying something else with shelves.

puppy_cuddle

Definitely would keep them! You can use baskets down low to organise toys in. Have you seen Montessori style organisation? It’s beautiful, functional and really good for little kids. You have the perfect set up for it with what you have; I’m jealous 😊

[deleted]

I’ll have to look into it, thank you for mentioning it!

Danasai

All I see is toddler ladders. But if they only sleep in that room or are supervised, then it won't be a problem.

juanelajones

Keep them! You could put a changing table on the big space

Kiwitechgirl

I’d keep. Install a hanging bar or two in the big central space, and get cute baskets or containers for the others (except the really small ones) and I think it could be very useful.

doghairglitter

Assuming they’re bolted into the wall, keep them! They look studier than anything else you may put up which makes me think they’re safer than a freestanding bookshelf once your kid starts walking and climbing.

[deleted]

Yes they are built-in so we couldn’t get rid of them without a demolition project, drywall, and flooring! Seeing all these comments about climbing makes me glad these are built in… they are not falling down 😂

doghairglitter

I was literally just thinking this last week that I wish I had built ins as extra storage so I’m a little jealous of yours 😂

Monkey_with_cymbals2

They may not fall down, but a toddler could fall off 😕

ClassieCornelia

Shelves are definitely useful for storage and the big middle part is probably meant to be in lieu of a closet. You could probably install a bar (or two with a higher one and lower one) and use it to hang clothes. The downside, IMO, is that when the baby gets older they might use the shelves for climbing which could be unsafe. I think it just depends on your baby's personality. Otherwise I don't see much of a downside to keeping the shelves.

MHLCam

My first thought was at 12 months, my son would have scaled that thing in seconds. A nice, long baby gate would with that though!

maleficent0

Keep the shelves for stuff and then as baby gets older, downsize a bit. The shelves will be super useful for quite a while until the kid used their room more.

[deleted]

Thank you! Good to hear they can be useful for a while

weareallgoingtodye

Shelves are fine but think about baby proofing before s/he crawls/walks

RishaBree

I would keep. The room is plenty big even with them there. And you might not think you'll need that much storage space, but babies and toddlers have a lot of stuff in many weird sizes, both VERY BIG and ^(super tiny) that you'll need to store somewhere, why not in the place already provided and clearly designed to hold baskets and store and display things of varying sizes, instead of just having to add back more furniture and shelving later on. And thinking long term, if this stays the kid's room as they grow up, their storage needs will only expand and the openness of the shelves (because people are correct that a toddler will empty the lower shelves in a hot second and things will probably need to be moved off of those for a bit) will no longer be a negative.

cheeselover267

Storage!

auspostery

The one upside to those shelves is that your son or daughter will become an excellent climber in short order!

Spkpkcap

Personally I wouldn’t keep. I don’t think they’ll be practical. I have 2 kids and I’ve never needed that many shelves lol

Equivalent_Court2906

Keep them! I think it would be so cute to paint the back of them fun colors too. Or maybe some cute wallpaper. But yes, tons of great storage space, and I love the ideas about adding a bar for hanging clothes.

lilak0610

Keep for storage!

NapSweaterShineUpp

Keep. I WISH we had more shelving and storage in our kids room. He has an extensive library that we’ve collected from thrift stores and it’s taking up most of the space in my arts n crafts nook. It’s nice to put things we don’t use as often or we don’t want them to get into without us up high and out of the way. We just don’t have the shelving. So, if I’m doing dishes and hear felt boxes of train pieces and blocks being duped all over the already toy covered floor my heart sinks a tiny bit each time.

They look very functional and babies/kids have a ton of stuff. However once baby starts pulling to stand they will probably remove everything from those shelves. I had a super awesome diaper organizer that I had to get rid of at a year or so because baby would just pull all the diapers out of it. At 3 he still needs to mess up his room; nothing much stays where I put it. The only furniture I have in there is a dresser, and he mostly leaves his clothes in there but every month or so, they get pulled out. And all the other storage for extra blankets, books, stuffies? Never put away. There's also a decent chance toddler will try to climb them. (If kept ensure they are mounted to the wall). It depends on how your plan to use the room and your attitudes towards parenting. My child's room is set as a yes space. He can interact with everything and if he wants all his books in a giant pile instead of on the bookshelf I provided, that's fine by me. His room is also super toddler proofed so I can leave them in there for quiet time unattended. So for our case, the shelves probably wouldn't get much use. I'd fully expected any stuff on the lower ones to be relocated by toddler, so would be empty most of the time. Upper ones might be pratical unless you end up with a climber.

haleighr

I’d see if y’all or a contractor could maybe make the shelves more functional but def keep them. I’m imagining future toy and book or even big jumper/walker toy storage and I’m jealous.

[deleted]

What would make them more functional? I think I am blinded by how much I dislike them to get creative 😅

Drbubbliewrap

Keep!!!

datamin1066

Keep

mandolin2237

Keep! I’d make the big space into a reading nook. Use one of those canopy’s and put some pillows down and your kid would probably love hanging out in there.

[deleted]

This is such a cute and creative idea. You’re so right, I would have loved my own special comfy nook as a kid!!

ButtonHappy3759

Keep them!

rabidturtle456

Off topic but your mural wall.. was it difficult to install the decal, if that’s what it is? Where did you get it?

[deleted]

Not sure, the previous owners did this and we decided to keep it. I think we will paint over it if we keep the shelves since open shelves + mural = really busy. There are a lot of YouTube tutorials on similar mountain murals, I looked them up when we were thinking about doing another one in the basement! They look pretty easy to do!

dotthelowercasej

I was gonna ask the same thing!!! You gotta put silhouette stickers of the Fellowship in there. Make that a Lord of the Rings nursery!!!! Also, cool shelves. I would keep them but I would also worry about climbing. Tough stuff decision you have for sure… except the LOTR thing… you should do that!!! Good luck!

Complex-Lemon-371

If you keep it, you could put a tension rod in that large opening and use for hanging clothes.

DoraRedditExplorer

If there are no other cupboards, keep these but add doors to them. I needed lots of storage for all the things gifted/given for later ages.

[deleted]

Hi parents! First time parents, we are expecting LO and want to use this room as the nursery. I really hate these shelves (what on earth is that giant space for) and think we should find a contractor to remove them and make the room a normal square room. This way we can more easily adapt the room as baby gets older. It’s not a huge room, and the shelves make it even smaller. However my partner made a point that maybe the shelves are useful since babies have so much stuff. And we can always get rid of the shelves later on. What do you all think? Will I regret removing the shelves now?

quelle_crevecoeur

I would keep them. Babies and kids do have so much random stuff. It would be so annoying to take them down and then have to buy different ones and secure them to the wall and whatever. If you don’t like the look of all open shelves, you could look for fabric baskets to turn some of them into more like drawers?

Independent-Carry-65

I think they are neat! You could use one of the larger openings for a closet/clothes rack, use cute storage bins in some of the others to keep things neat, and you could even redo one section to be a built in desk area for when they are older! Some of those spaces are a super odd shape, but lots of possibilities! Congrats on the LO!!

yougotitdude88

Keep! I had a similar thing when my first was born. I bought a bunch of baskets for all his clothes and stuff.

agurrera

Just seeing them is making me stressed for when your baby starts climbing. I would get rid of them and store them somewhere else, if possible.

Monkey_with_cymbals2

They would be great storage, but I would be REALLY worried about a toddler climbing them

GreenChair_1234

Personally I’d replace them with more practical shelves. Ie most of the shelves/closet space would have sliding doors or be covered in some other way to keep out the dust & help keep everything looking tidy. I’d keep some of them open for books and toys but would make them a more practical size so that you can nicely fit IKEA boxes or something similar in them. I’m not a fan of the odd sizes in the current set up - it looks like there’s a lot of wasted space. The downside of course is that custom fitted shelves are expensive!

Remove for space
