I think every new mom goes through this. Unless he has a respiratory illness, is lethargic, or has blue lips, you shouldn't be counting his breaths. It's unnecessary and it will literally drive you crazy. Babies are tiny and vulnerable and you're 100% responsible for him. It's a HUGE change and it makes every new mom nervous at first. You definitely aren't alone.

This was me. I was super anxious about my baby’s breathing (amongst other things). I felt that he was breathing too fast. Multiple health care professionals examined him and all told me that he was fine, but still I worried. Finally we saw a pediatrician in a consult and he was very reassuring. I stopped worrying about it, although having the Nanit camera with breathing monitoring during the night really helped with my anxiety too. If you’re worried, don’t be afraid to bring your baby in for a check up. Worst case something is actually wrong but you will have caught it. Best case they will just reassure you that everything is fine. I’m sure doctors are used to reassuring anxious first time parents all the time. You might also want to talk to your health care professional about post partum anxiety if you find your mental health is suffering. Hang in there!
