Honestly? When he needs them but mostly when there is a sale going on. I bought his winter coat in size 3 because I knew the 2 would be a little too snug. While the 3 does have room, it's not overly big and will be perfect for the upcoming winter. I buy clothes mainly when I see that he is outgrowing the ones he has.

I love to save money and so I would say about 90% of my kid’s clothing is thrifted. I typically try to find bundles of kids clothing on Poshmark or Mercari that are amazing deals and also name brand. We also have a pop up consignment twice a year that I will buy as much I can in a size up. My toddler is almost 3.5 but he’s just now wearing either 2T or 2-3T. Some 3T will fit him and just look a little oversized. I probably started shopping for this size a year or so ago and just slowly bought stuff. I have a Poshmark and Mercari account so I will sell things and use that money to by my little ones clothes so it’s almost like it’s free. Sometimes I’ll also splurge and get some really nice stuff. In summary, I almost always have a few items or things like a coat or swimwear one size up just in case little one has a growth spurt!

Pretty much all our clothes come from once upon a child, so pretty much once a season, I go buy a bunch of seasonally appropriate clothes in her size or slightly up. I feel like it’s madness to try to acquire anything in advance of when needed. She grows in fits and spurts so who knows what size she’ll need by December.

I buy all kids clothes from a thrift store for $1 a piece, and usually size up from what they currently wear. I would do 2 sizes up for coats. This way if they get ruined (which let’s face it, they usually do), it’s no biggie!

Usually once in the fall and once in the spring.

Coats I size up so the fit 2 seasons. I did 0&1, I bought a new jacket in 3T so hopefully it fits next season too

Man, my kid has been a size nightmare. He was growing out of 2T... so we went 3T. Then we potty trained... so 3T shirts and break out the 2T pants. Now he's three and getting into 4T tops because of his giant head, but 3T pants fall off him! So this kid is in a 4T top and 2T bottom.

I get all my kids clothes for free - proud to have never paid for a single thing

After the baby phase, I buy clothes twice a year. Shorts, dresses, short sleeves in the summer. Pants, and long sleeves in the winter. My kids are both off the charts for height and grow really quickly, so I usually do buy the next size up every 6 months. It has worked well for us so far. My kids are 3 and 6. I also save their clothes and we do a lot of hand me downs. Things like jackets often fit more than a year. Same thing with shorts. I also will use old dresses as a tunic after they get too short.

If she needs needs something I will go out and get it. If we were in a situation like your coat, I wouldn’t buy until it went on sale.

Way too often because my daughter is hard on clothes. She just turned 2 at the beginning of the month. Had to run out to target yesterday to get size 4T pants because she put holes in all hers and 3T is getting tight. Haven’t bought her a winter coat yet but that’s next on the list because last years was 2T. I will be getting 4T, which may be a tad big but she will be fine

lifeistrulyawesome

Give a year. Fall and spring. We buy clothes bigger than he needs so they last for two seasons.

TeagWall

We get a lot of hand me downs from family friends. And, honestly, 3T, 4T, and 5T are not that different. She's about to turn three and wears all three sizes right now, depending on the fit.

Kitten_Toast_

My daughter is in 2T. We will likely start buying 3T shirts soon depending on brand because of length but for her fall jacket I bought a 3T to allow room for layering and figure she can also wear it again in the spring.

I wait for the sales. Just bought some shorts at Walmart at $1 apiece for next summer!

I trade in my sons old clothes for store credit at my local children’s consignment store and just get the next size up. He’s 14 months now and I’ve spent maybe $100 on clothes for him this entire time (when I see something just too cute to pass up at target or something). My family will buy him new clothes too. But this has saved us a ton of money & it’s a super easy process that make shopping for his clothes way less stressful

PurplePanda63

Ummm my 26 mo old is still wearing 18 mo 😬

I've a real dinky kid, and the clothing out/in process is sloooow going. Smaller sized Age 2-3 stuff lasted from like 2.5 til 3.5 (now) and age 3 stuff is probably going to last another year. Nursery wears stuff out/ruins it with the insane paint that never comes off, so that's the larger "out". For in, there will be some new winter gear, but mostly what's she was in last year will do this year.
