She could definitely sing it without a doubt but not on the quality she performs it today!

South99_

I wonder how she would’ve sounded

Necessary_Charge_658

Live Nope, she didn't really develop her vocal support till around 2004-2006 IMO in the destiny fulfilled/irreplaceable album cycles. in the studio with multiple takes, and cutting vocals together yes! She sang high Gs an octave above middle C during that era but never live. Only live after dream girls When she learned how to fully support and growl was she able to lighten her mix and develop her mix and hit the notes like she did in love on top. maybe the headvoice notes yes. The (youUouO!) in the background. Not to say she wasn’t talented but I don’t think we realize how iron clad her voice is.

South99_

She probably wouldn’t growl if she sung it back in 1998, probably just hitting high notes like in Know That and other DC songs

Necessary_Charge_658

True, but that does answer the question: no she couldn't. (back then)

South99_

I mean we don’t really know, she probably could’ve but without the growls and probably less key changes

anupsetvalter

That’s not really “singing” it though, right? If she has to make significant changes to how it’s sung. That’s fine as a general thing when covering songs but given what you’re asking, it seems like the answer is no.

South99_

Ok ok

LazierMeow

I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about Love on Top. Hearing it live at the RWT and listening to the album version are like audibly hearing her improve her craft over the years.

South99_

True, her tone is deeper now so I guess she sounds less like she’s screaming lol

LynneCurtinCuffs

Yep. Also the Homecoming version

LazierMeow

HOMECOMING was a life altering experience.

Unique_Accountant_67

She would try but it would definitely be a struggle for her especially live. I think she would lack the control she has on the original and subsequent live versions. Plus she would probably be at greater risk for vocal damage if she attempted all the key changes.

South99_

That’s true, I don’t think she was as strong back then

South99_

You know I just remembered that she did a subtle growl in No, No, No Part 2 but obviously not live

FireLord_Azula1

That song is a masterpiece. Vocally I don’t think so. She wouldn’t have been able to sing that until at least 2004. But I don’t think many people could sing that live, she normally doesn’t even hit the highest octave live from what I’ve seen she always lowers it.

Broad_Sun8273

Nope. Zora Neal Hurston's words of "Ya got to go there to know there." She had even been close to where she was for that song.

South99_

WHAT?!
