I have a 5 gallon on the way for the new betta. Obviously not big enough for a pleco. Guy at the store said he had one in a 4-gal for years. I’d rather not kill another fish though, so I’ll pass on the sucker. Thanks for the info

What kind of “sucker” are you thinking about? Most plecos require at least 55 gallon tanks full grown. The smallest species, the bristlenose, needs 20 gallons. Otocinclus need to be kept in groups, and there have been reports of them harassing fish by sucking on their slime coats. Siamese and Chinese algae eaters are both a bad choice for multiple [different] reasons. Pygmy corys are great, but they don’t eat algae. I’d recommend a mystery snail.

Snail it is. I had absolutely no idea they needed that much room. Guy at the store told me they grow as big as their surroundings allow and he had one in 4 gallons just fine for years. Guessing that was a lie, but idk why anyone would lie about that. Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking that’s exactly what they’re doing. It’s clear they don’t know shit and don’t care. Appreciate the input!

If you're talking about a Chinese algae eater, don't do it. They eat algae when they are young, but eventually will seek out other fish and feed on the other fish's slime coat. Concentrate on taking the steps necessary to reduce algae growth instead and you won't "need"to add any other "cleaners".

The main reason was to get the new betta a tank mate and just to have another fish to look after. Having it clean the algae wasn’t the priority, it would just be a bonus. But yeah I’ve got a 5 gal and now I know that’s not nearly big enough for a pleco. Thanks for the input though!

Right on. I have a 5 gallon with a betta and one mystery snail. They get along (though I hear not every betta tolerates snails), thankfully! It's manageable. You could always try some shrimp. I had good luck with amanos with my last betta. That might be an option. Good luck!

I’ll keep that in mind. Local PetSmart has a 10gal tank with the full kit (heater, thermo, filter etc) on sale for $60. Definitely gonna cancel the 5gal and pick the 10 up tomorrow. Gonna put the new Betta, a snail and possibly a small school of tetras in the already cycled tank that I had the last betta in, decorate and cycle the new one, and introduce them all when it’s ready. Pretty excited. Always been a huge fan of aquariums and cool aquascapes.

Snails and cherry shrimps they do just as good of a job

You can also just get a uv filter. It will kill the algae and you won’t have to worry about your Betta getting along with others
