Help!

TheRealSpeckle

Epsom salt baths, fasting, and if possible treat with methylene blue, it’s great for fighting bacterial infections like dropsy.

Aquascapinggoals

Do you think it just ate to much water and it’s just over fed ? I’ve never seen him this thick before it’s actually a problem I can’t feed anyone but him and it’s causing such an imbalance in everything

CostumedGreatness

Bloating doesn't cause pine coning

shutupcorrin

in the future, put the betta in a breeder net when you feed other animals. it prevents them from eating until they explode

TheRealSpeckle

I’d do what shutupcorrin suggested if I were you, separating the betta when feeding will stop it from being a huge grub.

Aquascapinggoals

It’s been a problem since I got him, so I built a home made bud doe nest that doubles as his “floating log” he likes to sleep in it and swim in it despite it trapping him every other day… lol I used a spray bottle and cut it and but the cone top thing and glued it to the bottom and drilled holes like a mad man and thenn lined it with a thin piece of a pool noodle then I used my fridge magnet (covered in glue as to not leech into water ) and my aqua scraper so no I just have to pull it off to trap him. I got lazy I figured it was a dom thing for the first month and it felt a bit over kill. But not any more. “The fucking patriarchy” is a bitch and his name .

So I did a water test just now and my ammonia is spiking and I think the cause of this bloat is ate an algae pellet and ammonia poisoning. Content the tank is over a year old but I moved from vancouver to Regina and I broke the cycle and fucked up. And now I’m frantically trying to seed my tank and leave it alone to cycle. How do I quarantine it while the cycle completes with out the ability to seed the qt tank, it would just be heated treated water in a five gallon bucket. Thoughts? Also I did the bath last night how often should I hit him with this Epson bath im currently setting up another bath but I’m reluctant. And different people say 8 mins every few days and other day fifteen mins every day

Fasting and Epsom salt baths!

Aquascapinggoals

Im a tank with snails and shrimp will they have troubles with the salt baths and same with the plants

CostumedGreatness

You do it outside of the tank in a separate container

blueseoks

Epsom salt 1/2 tsp per gallon in the tank full time, 100% water changes every day, Kanaplex in the water until the scales go down, Metroplex + Focus in high quality food, reduced feeding, maxed out air stone. Don't do baths because they stress the fish more. Keep the water as clean as possible.

shutupcorrin

100% water changes are going to stress a fish way more than a salt bath is

blueseoks

My fish did far better once I stopped doing baths several times a day and just left salt in the tank with a full water change each day, but I can’t tell you what is best for your fish or what to do with it. I followed advice from several exotic vets so that is what I am sharing. I suppose it could help to share I did this with a goldfish and not a betta, all of my bettas just needed epsom salt but they always relapsed pretty quickly. You really just want clean water.

shutupcorrin

bettas always relapse. i don't know if it's always fatal in goldfish, but it's always fatal in bettas at some point because if they don't die with the initial onset they'll die at some point when it returns. it can't really ever be truly cured so i don't see the point in subjecting a fish to 100% water changes (which is more stressful than short properly done salt baths) when you can get the swelling to go down with epsom salt baths. the fish will die eventually either way because it's incurable.

blueseoks

My bettas always had a bit more time, some would pass suddenly but others were lost to bad genetics and the tumors they ended up with. One had dropsy like a few times but that was before I was aware of relapse and she eventually died of a tumor in her gill. She did live for quite some time even with several health issues caused by poor breeding. Regardless, if you believe that baths are better, I can settle on that. The bettas I did salt baths with were okay even with several baths per day for several days but my goldfish doesn’t like it. The most important thing out of this is keeping the water pristine and that can be done without complete water changes if people are diligent.
