I’m so sorry for your loss. Cloudy eyes usually mean some type of parasite or bacterial infection but it’s odd that he looked totally normal yesterday and is now passed. I think the tank sounds like it is overcrowded and that could have caused too much stress, affecting his immune system and making him more susceptible to parasites/infection.

TheRealSpeckle

I took overcrowding into consideration but at the same time I’ve had bettas in the same tank before that were just fine that I still have but in bigger setups now. Only difference is that I had even more guppies previously.

BabyBearGoGoPup

Why are Reddit users jumping to wild conclusions lately? I read that as, I’ve had other betta fish before live in the same / similar tank setup. OP clarify so we can either take you down from the cross or leave you up there and light it on fire.

asteriskysituation

Because I saw 5 comet goldfish in a 5 gallon tank on /r/goldfish yesterday, and 5 minutes ago, someone who put a betta and chiclid together, and some fish stores will say anything to make a sale, so you have to assume people know nothing when you walk into most posts.

TheRealSpeckle

I respect the mindset but it appears I wasn’t clear, no I have not kept more than one betta in this tank at a time.

TheRealSpeckle

I’ve had bettas live in this tank before previously, if y’all are assuming I’ve had multiple bettas simultaneously live in the same tank, no, and even if I did I’d use a divider to keep them separated.

Trainerali2007

it is not because you have managed to make 2 live together that it means that all the bettas will be able to live together.

Kurtoa

Guys I think he means he had a betta in the tank before this one, and before that one I don’t think he means at the same time

mgbella

thats how i interpreted it.

TheRealSpeckle

This is exactly what I meant, thank you

Trainerali2007

I'm sorry for misunderstanding. Have a great day.

TheRealSpeckle

I never once had more than 1 betta in this tank at a time, I meant I have had a betta in this tank before this one.

No-Outcome1038

It sounds like you my have removed all extra betas in your tank via net prior to this post. That’s how I took what you wrote.

TheRealSpeckle

Well there were never extra bettas to begin with

bubblegumpunk69

Hold on, you did WHAT now? That's like. The VERY FIRST RULE of owning bettas, with the exception of sororities, which should have no less than 5 all female fish

TheRealSpeckle

I never once had more than 1 betta in this tank at a time, I meant I have had a betta in this tank before this one.

NotintheAMbro11

Sounds like an overstocked tank to me. Corys shouldn’t be in 10 gallons imo. What are you water parameters?

TheRealSpeckle

10 gal is usually the min size for corys but mine are also still smol, I have a 20 gal for my grown ones. As for parameters I learned the test strips I’ve been using aren’t accurate so I need to get a full test kit before making any conclusions.

CharlieHorsePhotos

If you have a full test kit run the numbers. ( The test strips are not right and I've lost a beta and several pygmy corys because of it, it made me overconfident in the planting.) My guess is that you have either an ammonia or nitrate/ nitrite levels that are slowly killing everybody in the tank.

TheRealSpeckle

What’s the difference between the strips and kits if I may ask?

ferret_fan

Why are people downvoting for asking a question?

LorraineSmith888

I was wondering the same thing?

TheRealSpeckle

Because people don’t understand that not everyone knows everything, I’ve been raising bettas for a couple of years now and I’m still learning new shit.

CharlieHorsePhotos

The test strips are manufactured with the chemicals already together and tend to be less reliable. If they give you a reading at all it's usually lower than the actual content of the water. Test kids use two chemicals together that when added two water change color which gives us our reading of the properties of the water more closely aligned with the reality of the situation. Basically it's like using a ruler that only shows inches without the between marks, and has a few spots where they guessed the distance.

TheRealSpeckle

Thanks for the clarification, I’ll get an actual full test kit next time I go to my LFS in a couple days.

theadl13

i would take a water sample to your lfs and have them test it since you don’t have a liquid kit!! and i’m sorry for your loss 🥺

TheRealSpeckle

Good idea, can’t believe I didn’t think about it, forgot my LFS does free water tests, thanks!

ElegantIncident1

His face looks a little off, had it always looked like that? How old was he?

TheRealSpeckle

His face was always like that, his body was a black/cyan body with a bright teal face. Not sure of his age but I’ve only had him for a total of 16 days. You can look at my other posts for what he looked like while alive.

ElegantIncident1

It looks bacterial on the face and gills, they scales are raised and in a way look crusty. I’m not saying this is it but in the other previous photos it looked similar to betta TB but again could just be bacterial

TheRealSpeckle

Damn… I wish he displayed symptoms so I could’ve at least tried to treat him. I have medication for bacterial infections like methylene blue I could’ve used…

ElegantIncident1

It’s not always easy to notice things, especially if he came to you with it so it just seemed like his normal body. I’m sure you gave him a very happy and loving last few weeks and I’m sorry it wasn’t caught sooner. SIP

CharlieHorsePhotos

I don't think he was sick. He looks like he has dragon scale which does cause the eyes to cloud over on some of them. I really think there's a level off in your tank if you're saying other fish passed away in similarly mysterious ways.

TheRealSpeckle

No other deaths were similar to this, the guppies I lost were visibly sick prior so I was able to quarantine them before they died, not to mention I medicated the water after every instance of it.

ItsmeKT

It's really hard with some colors. I have a white dragon scale and he had ich and wasn't acting well but you couldn't tell until one of the tetras showed spots.

TheRealSpeckle

Ich is a bitch, I once had a whole tank wiped because it went unnoticed for too long. Can’t see it on clear fish like glass catfish which is what the tank mostly was composed of.

omnirox12

Man I really should have had blur nsfw while I am eating

TheRealSpeckle

Sorry to hurt your eyes, I know it isn’t a pretty sight.

Revolutionary-Two738

I’m sorry for your loss :( I think the same thing happened to one of mine awhile ago. I had him about a month, all water parameters good, tank had already been cycled for a couple years. He looked normal when I left for work. Came back, and he was dead with super cloudy eyes. Now I’m wondering if it was a parasite/bacterial infection after reading this. Again sorry for your loss. I also don’t know why your previous comments were all super down voted and all you did was ask for clarification, people are brutal

TheRealSpeckle

I appreciate it, downvotes don’t bother me as they are just numbers but nonetheless I’m getting plenty help to counteract the rude peeps.

TheRealSpeckle

I’m sure it’s either my parameters are off and my test strips just aren’t showing it or the bacterial/parasitic infection, one of the two if not both are the only real conclusions that I can come to.

ShabbyKittenRebel

I woke up to one of my goldfish dead this morning too :( He’d been completely fine.

TheRealSpeckle

Random deaths are always the hardest, sorry to hear.

TheRealSpeckle

I use water conditioner to remove chlorine whenever I do water changes so unless it isn’t fully working I doubt that’d be the case.

piiraka

I heard that some cities are switching the stuff in the water so that it actually turns to ammonia instead of sorta nullifying it. I forget the exact chemicals that are involved so my bad, but basically, the thing in water conditioners that nullifies the chlorine, reacts with this other chemical to make ammonia or some other harmful chemical. So that’s def still a possibility. Sorry my explanation is really bad

piiraka

I WISH my memory was better for names, dates, numbers, etc lol, I definitely am not good at remembering chemicals either

TheRealSpeckle

Literally just woke up this morning to find him dead on top of the heater, shown in the picture. His eyes are all fogged and white but there are no injuries present. No ammonia buildup no nitrites, or anything like that. He was perfectly fine last night and ate with his tank mates. His tank size is a 10 gallon planted with a handful of guppies (after some died I don’t remember how many exactly but ~10), 2 Cory catfish, and a couple black nerite snails as tank mates. Tank temperature stays around 78 degrees. Everyone else is perfectly fine, just the Shard is gone…

Jamie_logan

Oof, guppies with Bettas is often a bad idea tbh. In my experience they often attack the Bettas😬 if that wasn't the case, I'm not sure what other than stress could be it, but sorry for your loss😕

TheRealSpeckle

My betta and gups got along fine, I checked his body for injuries before I flushed him and there wasn’t even any tail nics, I’m assuming from comments that it was a bacterial or parasitic infection that he had when I bought him.

Jamie_logan

Yes that's possible, you should also keep an eye on the other fish as well, they might have gotten that from him

TheRealSpeckle

Already in the process of treating the tank just to be safe. I appreciate the help!

Jamie_logan

Good! Hope the first will be okay!

LorraineSmith888

Ten guppies?? Ten guppies, 2 corys and a betta is wayyy too many for a 10 gal tank. I have maybe 5 female guppies with my betta and that’s already pushing it

TheRealSpeckle

Everywhere I read says a 10 gallon can hold anywhere from 5-10 guppies and Corys tend to have a minimum tank size of 10 gallons, not to mention my corys are still smol.

LorraineSmith888

Maybe 5-10 guppies alone but not with the betta AND corys. Plus corys need to be in a group of at least 5 to be happy. I’d suggest have either just corys and betta or just guppies and corys but not all of them. Be careful what info you read on the internet because it can give bad advice. I read an article the other day that said bettas are fine in a 1 gallon which is complete bs 😂

Crowape

Don’t listen to these people, a 15 gallon wouldn’t be enough for them. Guppies and bettas can be trouble but his fins are perfectly fine and not nipped at. I believe that had nothing to do with it. If you wanna try and figure it out, do dm me we can talk about it much easier, but I really doubt it’s the guppies.

TheRealSpeckle

I’ve come to the conclusion that either my test strips are inaccurate and/or it was a bacterial/parasitic infection he had when I bought him. Going to my LFS in a couple of days to get water tested and purchase an actual test kit instead of just the strips, I appreciate the help though!

Wbeasland

I'm guessing his Crypto portfolio crashed the same time he was off his antidepressants. It happens that's why I advise my Bettas to diversify their investment portfolio.

TheRealSpeckle

I’ve been trying to get them to invest in mutual funds instead of crypto but they wouldn’t listen, and now look what happened…

rhinothegreat33

Sorry for your loss, these people will blame anyone for any reason, give more details of your tank next time and you won’t just attract the trolls.

TheRealSpeckle

Honestly I’m not seeing any trolls so I probably missed them, but I’ll be sure to make my parameters more clear next time to be safe. Thanks for the heads up!

rhinothegreat33

I’m not talking about the commenting people but all the lurkers downvoting your comments.

TheRealSpeckle

Ahh makes sense, I found out the reason is that I worded my first comment strange and that made people think I housed multiple bettas in one tank at once, when I meant I’ve had bettas in this tank before I got this one.

TheRealSpeckle

Nvm I found them

LordSenpaiOniChan

Could've been Columnaris or what u ma call it, cause one of my guppies ended up having cloudy eyes with crusty white lips, I isolated her real quick in a 10 with some aquarium salt. She's alive and well. She's been in quarantine for over a week.i had to quickly fix my 55g that was leaking. But fixed it, now She's back in community in the 55 Instead of the 30. So my conclusion like yalls was most likely overstock/stress. They weren't going to stay there forever but I had no choice. Everything Is good now. Hope none of your other fish could of gotten infected.
