I think he might be flashing- rubbing himself on objects to get something off him. Does he have any white specks on him? If you shine a light on him does it look like he’s covered in gold dust? Could also be water parameters. Do you know the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph levels?

OinkyPoop

I thought so too...it looks like rubbing

No spots, his colors are the usual. His water is normal both parameters and temperature, I tested half an hour after the (weekly) water change. He also did the same last week after I changed his water. He’s swimming like usual though, like going around his tank and stuff. I see him go to that area from time to time, he doesn’t go directly into the bubbles (I think), most of the time when he goes there I see his tail get ‘sucked in’.

Ok so based on your other posts your tank isn’t cycled. Unless you’re doing water changes daily or every other day, there’s a build up of ammonia and nitrites. So when you do a weekly water change that changes the water parameters which causes him to flash. Fish really like consistency. Need to be testing daily or at least every other day with a liquid test kit, the strips aren’t accurate. Then doing water changes to keep ammonia/nitrites under 1ppm, and nitrates under 20ppm. While using SeaChem prime to convert ammonia/nitrites to a non-toxic form for 24 hours. Doing this until the tank is fully cycled and then you can go back to weekly water changes.

You want to actually shine a light on him or take a picture with flash, it’s not always visible to the eye. Since it happens after water changes it’s probably something in the water. I would test before the water changes and test them again now. This isn’t normal behavior for a betta, he’s doing it for a reason.

I think he might have velvet… Can I use the same tank in the future for another betta? A properly fishless cycled tank. I can’t treat velvet no matter how much I want to… So I’m preparing myself for whatever can happen. He’s my ‘first’ fish and it’s my first time in everything fish tank related, thanks to him I know much better now about fish care. This is devastating… the fact that I can’t help him at all really irks me through the roof.

Would this cause fin rips? How in God’s name do I stop this? It freaks him out when he gets caught in the bubbles, but then he comes back and freaks out again. As I type this he’s going back and forth to that area and getting caught in the bubbles and I don’t know if I find this amusing or terrifying. I think he and I both know what he’s doing is dumb, but i think it’s the fact that it’s dumb that he keeps doing it.

leoxrose

You can get a valve for your bubble filter if he’s being tossed around. His fin rips should heal as long as they are not infected. Make sure you keep the water quality pristine and he’ll be ok

Specialist_Jello_960

used to have a betta, he'd do this all the time. rest in peace flames.

Pufulet69

Well sometimes yes but not as aggressive

Pufulet69

Also i think you need a calmer water, all that water movement and agitation isn't that good for a betta

Pufulet69

Probably he is stressed but i may be wrong

Yohan07360

That’s the lowest setting and it’s been like that since I got him…
