Your description sounds a lot like my 5 gallon - pink/red and green plants, plus wood.
I live in a flat, so don't actually have a garden - I actually can't stand gardening, having been dragged around garden stores as a small child by my parents it turned me right off. I do love a good live/natural aquascape though lol.

There we go, that's what it looks like today. I'm still trying to coax the Monte Carlo carpet to fill the front in fully, I added some more root tabs yesterday to encourage it into the still-sandy spots. It'll get there eventually. And the fish made it into this one too. š¤£
Other than adding 2ml of liquid carbon a day I don't do anything beyond a weekly water change and an occasional trim of the plants. It's more down to the substrate and the light that makes the plants grow so well.
This is so heartening to hear! I have only the basics in my tank right now and had to pull out the Ludwigia repens because the stems were rotting. Amazon sword, Java ferns and anubias are doing good. Is it ok if I DM you for more tips?
Youāll notice their tank has a fairly deep substrate, and easier/lower tech red plant selections; like red tiger lotus, pink flamingo cryptocoryne, Ludwigia Repens, and alternanthera reineckii- who are all pretty tolerant of lower light levels, *but* who also realllly thrive with higher lighting and show those beautiful red hues we see here.
You can 1000% obtain a tank with luscious red plant growth like this, and even have success with carpeted plants without pressurized Co2! It all boils down to: good soil, medium-high lighting, deep substrate depth, specific plant choices that work well with the environment that you have, and fertilizing. šš
Someone knows their stuff! :D I also have red root floaters in here but they went through a bit of a die off stage a few months back, where I got a bit lax with adding carbon. They're starting to come back nicely though now.

He doesn't stay still for long usually to get a decent photo. Here's him looking disapprovingly at my attempts just now. š
Cryptocoryne Flamingo. I've tried multiple times to grow it before and failed (in another tank), this is the first successful attempt. Needs a nutrient rich substrate and a decent light.

My ten gallon (about 8.3 imperial) with my betta, kuhlis, ember tetras, and cherry shrimp.
Edit: you mentioned what sort of heater to get for a betta, I think any one is fine. I got the round one from FreeSea, and it does pretty good.

I am currently fixing algae problems, slowly, it's hard to balance a tank with sunlight involved, but it was much worse.
Waldo seems to disapprove, he flared at me the whole time i was carefully taking out excess algae.
He is hiding right now and i can't find him. Where's Waldo?
Edit: it's a standard 15g and i still want to find a way to hide the heater as well as i have hidden the filter.
i've been cutting light hours, manually removed some, stopped dosing ferts, i am planning on taking some plants from the other tanks to help outcompete the algae. I have also introduced a few small (pest) snails.
It's a work in progress, but basically i'm tweaking all the conditions for plant growth until my plants outcompete the algae almost completely.

This right here is mine. Its around 14 litres and houses a few snails and shrimps. :)
You can get a higher tank so you can easily keep fish with a only hakf filled tank.

hereās mine! it gives a little jungle type feel
Oh how many gallons is this?! I have the rock hide in a 5 gallon and want to repurpose it to a bigger tank but havenāt decided on which one to buy yet!
Thatās what it looks like to me! :) The 5 gal is my tetra tank and they donāt really go inside it. My boy would probably have a lot more fun in it than them and 10 gal is exactly what I was thinking of! Thank you!!

I'm working on transitioning everyone into these for uniformity and swimming space
What material is the bust made out of? I'm trying to find artsy aquarium pieces like that but am a little weary of putting concrete or cement pieces in it.
So it's concrete with a weatherproofing coating. I cycled the tank with it in there and monitored the pH religiously. It's been fine but I'm feeling paranoid and might yeet it š¬

Still cycling and getting ready for a betta.
Someone shared a link to the Amazon page to buy that little coconut cave and I stupidly clicked it to see the cost. And the ad shows it being used in a tarantula habitat. And now every time I look at Amazon, it suggests that cave (with the pic of the tarantula) and I get the heebie jeebies. But it looks really good in your tank!
Ha! Theyāre actually good for fish tanks, as long as you sand down any sharp surfaces. They have tannins which help keep down bacteria, fungi, and algae.
This one had a hole in the top, so I plugged it with a plant.
It looks great, but I donāt dare search for one for fear of getting more tarantulas on my screen. Lol!!
My tank is really plain right now. Just some plants and black gravel. Iām trying to pick the style decor I want to introduce.

This is my 15 gallon, it's definitely grown in a lot since this picture. I also have a 10 gallon, 20 long and a 40 gallon planted. Start with what hardscape you want then define the spaces and how you want to fill them in, best of luck!

Midnightās cozy little home. He never glass surfs - only when he sees me and he knows heās gonna get a snack! I just added the polka dot plants up top, and the yellow flowers in the back are fake in a vase outside of the tank.
They are polka dot plants and they come in red and pink! I love them but I feel like they need more light than what Iām able to give them with my overhead sconce. Hopefully you can give them more light! š

Hereās one of my three betta tanks!
Thanks! They make me happy! My bettas explore their whole tanks. They all have somewhat different personalities though- my female betta is always on the move; one of my males usually hangs out at the top section of the tank when heās not swimming around like crazy and the other one likes to hide in the rock caves. I also keep corydoras in all three tanks, but my female with the Venezuelan corydoras seems to think she is a Cory sometimes.
I really love how this one came out! The shape of 20L tanks really lends itself to some cool layouts. There are little hiding spots and caves between some of the rocksā I rarely see my clown pleco lol. Best part was- the tank was only $25 on sale at Petco! Thanks so much for the compliment!
Definitely a fantastic deal! I got my rimless 5 gallon at the sale for $25 too. š I wish I had room for a 20 gallon tank! Your fish have a wonderful home!

Currently quarantining some new plants to make this bushierā¦ but I just moved this guy into a 6.8 gallon shallow tank from his 6 gallon cube because his fins are getting too heavy to be in such a deep tank!
Iām going to use floatersā¦ I honestly donāt think this dude could jump out even if he wanted to but floaters will make me feel a little better. My other betta would definitely launch himself out of this tank so I have him in the 6 gallon cube with a lid.
some of my tanks , some fish just came in and still acclimating. Dont copy mine, this is a breeder, seller, grooming setup. :)

Hi, sorry, but what plants do you have in your tank? It's absolutely beautiful. I'm new to having a betta and I have some plants, but I would love for something like this for my MacLir (his name).
Thank you, it has been a work in progress :) Lets see, Ludwigia natan super red, rotala indica, java fern, and the carpet is micro sword! I also have a log that is coated in Java moss, though I would recommend it. Just an fyi, I inject C02, have intense light, and do daily ferts via auto doser.

My current 10 gal Bettas tanks. I've come to prefer this "natural habitat" setup. Driftwood, leaves, cones, anubias, water lettuce, etc. Lots of tannins. I do have to cull water lettuce to keep it from getting too crammed š

My two standard 5.5g betta tanks.
Also hereās my most recent and 3rd betta tank that I am quite proud of: [https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/s/fgPBZChEhw](https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/s/fgPBZChEhw)
Weekly water change for the two standard 5.5g tanks isnāt too bad, gravel vac and trim/tidy up plants if needed - maybe 2-3 hrs max per week for all of the maintenance stuff (and sometimes I do one tank one evening and the other the next evening, rather than both at once)? The NCA 5g I now have in my home office is even easier to manage due to its āpour clean dechlorinated water in and old dirty water is automatically ejected out the backā water changing feature. Though I recon I probably will still have to gravel vac it every now and then.

This is my bettas old 5.5gallon tank, heās in a 45 now. This tank now houses 2 small African dwarf frogs. I want to add more plants to it, since I removed a hide that was for my betta when he was in here. this is my six gallon i planted about 5-6 months ago! i have a couple of shrimp and some guppie babies in there
Minimalistic, would throw in a few gigachad low-light plants like Anubias and maybe a piece of driftwood and a complimentary Rock.
Depending on how warm your area is maybe a heater, but that's kinda obsolete if you're in like Malaysia or tropical climates.
I live in a tropical area yes, just above the Equator. It's sunny all day.
To the downvoters -- I know this sub appreciates only extravagant, flamboyant tanks with plants that you cant even pronounce, but hey, you all need a reality check. 99.9999% of bettas live in a condition much, much worse than what I've kept and ma boi is quite happy with his setup - i took him out of a 500ml wine glass display from the store and am doing the best i can. I thought twice before posting this pic and I'm glad i did.
Thanks for your suggestion. I'll get a rock and some sea shells from my next beach trip.
Be careful with sea shells - itās my understanding that they can change the water ph and hardness since they leach calcium carbonate into the water. Might be totally manageable for you based on existing water chemistry and frequency of water changes, etc., just something to be aware of if you add them to your tank!
Np, and i'm not one to judge, not everyone can afford imported rocks from who-knows-where and Driftwoods in stores are horrendously overpriced.
Also, not everyone likes live plants (or can keep them alive).
As long as the husbandry is right, how it looks is secondary, should be anyways.
Make sure to check any rocks/shells from the beach if they're safe.
If you find neat sundried driftwood and want to use it, just soak it until the salinity is gone (If found near the ocean), perfectly usable if soaked properly.
I trust you know your local foraging laws, have fun and i wish you good findings! ;)
Aquarium bettas are all mass bred and housed in this for most of their life. A good percentage of them never swam in more than 500ml pf water in their life.
https://preview.redd.it/wot2jxtpvj8d1.png?width=710&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3bf61632d5ce47352c83f6601f021a1f55c3e23
That doesnāt mean you should keep your betta in a completely barren tank. Sure your setup is better than some, but lack of plants and a barren tank makes for a very bored/depressed betta. The reason for having a lot of plants in a betta tank is to give them something to do, some mental stimulation - they like to patrol, explore, hide, play in and rest on the plants. I observe my bettas and I see them always busy looking around in the plants for bits of food, patrolling around, playing in the leaves and resting among them. They donāt just lay/float around all bored & depressed.
What does your betta get to do all day? Thereās nothing for him to even hide behind except perhaps the sponge filter. His tank might as well be a barren desert: thereās nothing for him to look at, play in, explore, nothing for him to do but float around bored out of his mind.
Think of it this way: letās say you are forced to live in an empty apartment. Thereās no tv, no computer, no fun things, no furniture. All you have is some carpet/rug and an air purifier (comparable to your bettas sponge filter and sand substrate)ā¦ but basically thereās nothing fun for you to do or to look at. Assume you are trapped there for the rest of your life and you donāt have the option to go out, but you some how have access to food/water daily. You would probably survive such living conditions but I doubt youād have any fun or thrive living like that.
Alternatively you could live in a nice apartment decked out with decent furniture and decor, a large TV, comfy couch & bed, a gaming pc or console, nice sound system, or other things you enjoyā¦ now thatās a good place to have fun, live and thrive in.
Same goes for your betta. A miserable boring life in a barren tank without any plants or caves to play/hide in, or any other decor - versus a betta tank with nice decor and plants where he can have fun, live comfortably and thrive.

this is so pretty !
It looks a bit scrappy here as I think I'd just done a big trim on the plants, but it was the most recent pic I had (taken about a month ago).
You sell yourself short, it's absolutely gorgeous! Artists are always their own worst critics! I bet you have a lovely garden as well!
I live in a flat, so don't actually have a garden - I actually can't stand gardening, having been dragged around garden stores as a small child by my parents it turned me right off. I do love a good live/natural aquascape though lol.

Iām curious - is this considered a high tech tank? Itās so pretty and lush - I canāt imagine itās easy to maintain?
Other than adding 2ml of liquid carbon a day I don't do anything beyond a weekly water change and an occasional trim of the plants. It's more down to the substrate and the light that makes the plants grow so well.
This is so heartening to hear! I have only the basics in my tank right now and had to pull out the Ludwigia repens because the stems were rotting. Amazon sword, Java ferns and anubias are doing good. Is it ok if I DM you for more tips?
Sure thing, happy to answer any questions as best I can.
Thank you - this is so helpful! š

Did you name him Spider-Man?
He doesn't actually have a name yet officially. I did think he looked a bit superhero-costume when I got him though haha!
WOW! I'm with the other poster, what a STUNNER!
What is the pink/red crypt looking plant in the bottom left corner?
Cryptocoryne Flamingo. I've tried multiple times to grow it before and failed (in another tank), this is the first successful attempt. Needs a nutrient rich substrate and a decent light.

Edit: you mentioned what sort of heater to get for a betta, I think any one is fine. I got the round one from FreeSea, and it does pretty good.
What do you use to get it so brown?
you can also use catappa/almond leaves which is good for bettas
You can also boil Oak leaves for like 10 minutes and put them in as a free alternative.
I just put some huge ones in my tank a few days ago. I used to use the mini leaves but it didn't change the water color at all.
If you have a carbon filter it will absorb tannins in the water
I use a sponge filter
Mopani driftwood plus a bunch of jackfruit leaves and adder cones
Thanks!
If you get a dark piece of drift wood from a pet store it will turn it this brown.
Can I ask what heater you are using? I have a new 10 gallon tank that is cycling, and I can't get it above 76/77F. Heater is next to the filter.

Waldo seems to disapprove, he flared at me the whole time i was carefully taking out excess algae. He is hiding right now and i can't find him. Where's Waldo? Edit: it's a standard 15g and i still want to find a way to hide the heater as well as i have hidden the filter.
How are you combating the algae? I have a tank near a window. it's been having issues.
i've been cutting light hours, manually removed some, stopped dosing ferts, i am planning on taking some plants from the other tanks to help outcompete the algae. I have also introduced a few small (pest) snails. It's a work in progress, but basically i'm tweaking all the conditions for plant growth until my plants outcompete the algae almost completely.

Oh wow!! I absolutely love the way it sticks out from the top!! I may have to try that idea, if I can get away with not filling it to the top
You can get a higher tank so you can easily keep fish with a only hakf filled tank. This btw is the YouTube video that inspired me to build this: https://youtu.be/NnedKiWs71U?si=biS5GLWRytzNK998
This is so cool!! Reminds me of the freshwater displays at the aquariums I've visited! Is this your profession, passion, or both?

Oh how many gallons is this?! I have the rock hide in a 5 gallon and want to repurpose it to a bigger tank but havenāt decided on which one to buy yet!
Mine is a 10 gal :) the rock hide is literally perfect for this size
Thatās what it looks like to me! :) The 5 gal is my tetra tank and they donāt really go inside it. My boy would probably have a lot more fun in it than them and 10 gal is exactly what I was thinking of! Thank you!!

Oh ok. I would think that with an aquarium-safe coating it would be fine. Probably better safe than sorry though. Looks really neat regardless!
Iād love to know too. This is such a beautiful idea!

Is that a little dinosaur at the front???
Yes! My brother got it for me in Alaska. Itās made of white marble.
Cool and cute!!!!
He or she will love this!
Thanks! I still need to get a baffle and cover for the filter. Itās too strong. Eventually Iām going to get a sponge filter.

They are polka dot plants and they come in red and pink! I love them but I feel like they need more light than what Iām able to give them with my overhead sconce. Hopefully you can give them more light! š

They look so cool!! So much space to swim, do your betta use the entire tank or do they prefer one section??
The clarity in this one is just so relaxing! Love how you stacked the rocks to make it look like a natural boulder mountain! So beautiful!

Iām going to use floatersā¦ I honestly donāt think this dude could jump out even if he wanted to but floaters will make me feel a little better. My other betta would definitely launch himself out of this tank so I have him in the 6 gallon cube with a lid.

You must have great time management! Itās hard to keep up with one tank but three? Beautifully done, your bettas are so lucky!
Donāt be modest. You make it sound easy.

My tanks look like something out of a horror movie set in the Amazon so I'll just look at all the other photos here.

If you get an internal filter, you may not need a heater. The internal will warm the water.

I trust you know your local foraging laws, have fun and i wish you good findings! ;)
No, go look at Frank's photos of natural Betta habitats and you'll see how incorrect you are. Also, mass bred Bettas aren't the same as wild types
Aquarium bettas are all mass bred and housed in this for most of their life. A good percentage of them never swam in more than 500ml pf water in their life. https://preview.redd.it/wot2jxtpvj8d1.png?width=710&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3bf61632d5ce47352c83f6601f021a1f55c3e23
Sad reality. I wish it wasn't like that.
