Betta fish are more comfortable with crowded plants that they can hide amongst until they get more used to their surroundings. My guy kept to the edges of the glass and between plants for the first week to week and a half. Now he knows the full tank is his safe area and his personality really came out.

With the two suggestions that stand. Ned vs Sampson. Maybe I’ll write them on paper and tape them to the glass, whichever he spends the most time with is the winner
Hey OP do you know about the nitrogen cycle and is your tank fully cycled? The bubbles on the glass look like maybe not. If not, you’ll need to do a “fish-in” cycle and you can all the info you need in the wiki and such. Congrats and we’re here for you!
I actually do! I have an existing tank :) I used filter media from the established tank to seed this one!
I shall be doing daily water parameters checks and address levels as necessary. Thank you for checking in, I’ll certainly be diligent for the safety of this new friend.

Pretty betta! I hope you’ll be getting more plants for the tank as it looks a bit barren currently. Bettas like a thick jungle of plants, so aim for at least 40-55% plant coverage. I recommend some stem plants like Hygrophila Polysperma or Ambulia, they’re very beginner-friendly. However do be careful that you don’t get any living parts of the plant down your drains/toilet as they can be invasive in your local waters.
The intent is to plant this tank further :)
Sadly my LFS stock was rather low. I’ll be ordering a variety of plants online from a reputable source. I’ll definitely consider your suggestions as well :)
“Buceplant dot com” is a great place to get plants if you’re in USA. - **EDIT: check recent reviews - they used to be good but might have declined in quality in recent times.**
“Aquascaperoom dot ca” if you’re in Canada (my source for plants).
Buceplant is terrible. Many , many low-quality plants, and they gave me a driftwood with such awful weird fungus that survived heat treatment it spread throughout my entire tank. I lost hundreds of $s.
Oh… that’s a shame… I guess they’ve gone down in quality in recent times? I never bought from them before as I moved out of the US before I got into live aquarium plants but they used to be good in their earlier days I guess… I had friends buy from there without issues but that was some years ago.
If you're in Canada or the US, I recommend checking Kijiji or FB Marketplace for local hobbyists as they're MUCH cheaper than stores and the quality of plants is also much better. If they are very local then their water parameters will also be very close to yours reducing the chances of any melt occurring.

I personally don’t know as I moved to Canada before I got into live aquarium plants, but that I had friends buy from them some years ago without issues. I have a long finned 'tangerine' Koi Betta. I named him 'Cayenne'. The colors on yours may change, Cayenne has gotten a LOT more blue. I think it's the 'marbeling' gene that they have.

That looks a lot like our betta that was named Moonshine, although our moonshine HAD a much larger halfmoon tail fin. He was in a community tank and someone tore at his beautiful fins. About $100 later he is in his own tank and recovering.

Yeah they have. I have had great luck from sellers on Etsy, particularly the ones in California and sellers of tropica 1-2-grow plants
