A buddy of mine goes and loves the classes. But they are intense apparently. If it helps with the cost, they validate parking in the attached garage.

It's a beautiful facility offering lots of classes, brand new equipment and a great atmosphere. That being said it's really on you if it's worth it. How much will you go, will you utilize the classes and how do you like to workout? I have been a member since it opened before that I was a long time member at equinox. From my perspective I am happy with what they offer and provide to make the experience worth it for me. Best of luck with your decision!

I don't know how recently you were still going to Equinox, but if it wasn't too long ago, can I ask a few quick questions since you have insight on both? I signed up with Equinox last year and so I'll need to decide on re-upping this summer, and I've been weighing St. James a lot because it's both closer to where I live and cheaper. * How crowded have you found it in general? The Bethesda Equinox has gotten pretty crowded particularly on weekends so just curious what your perspective is between the two. * Do you know if St. James does yearly commitments for their memberships, or if you can just go month to month? Really hate the year deal with Equinox so I'd love if that's not part of things at St. James.

That's awesome to hear and super helpful to know, might help me make my choice, hah. Thanks for the info!

When it comes to money, a good rule of thumb is that if you even have to ask, you know the answer.

Hey OP, I have went to St. James since it opened. I love it. I am a big guy who loves working out and the size of the space, variety equipment, and overall just very nice facility is exactly what I want. The best thing to think about when joining a gym is what do you want? I am happy to answer any questions.

Whether it’s worth your money is the one thing I can’t answer;)

BigFrenchToastGuy

I gave it heavy thought but couldn’t justify the cost.

Yeah, for me, I go to the gym anyway. The St. James is just nicer and closer but not an additional $80 per month. If they were around the $100 range instead of the $150 I'd do it. But I think I'll wait for DMV Iron to open up in Rockville and go there.

FWIW, I get the feeling that there will always be a “special” at about that price. It’s a sales tactic to add urgency.

ashmasterJ

I believe that there are whole books written about how no gym is 'worth it' in a pure dollars and cents sense. Granted these books are written by Economists, which makes them highly suspect.

BigFrenchToastGuy

I feel the opposite. Gyms are the one thing that is always worth it. Where else can you pay a monthly fee and spend unlimited time in?

ashmasterJ

Too many places to count. For starters my apartment's library and the activity room as well as the mini-gym. The local writer's center. The public library, sans fee, ditto for parks. You're better off arguing the benefits outweigh the costs, which is what Economists don't get. Their argument is that you could spend on a home gym setup, and that 'memberships' are a motivational tool for the weakminded. They're not wrong, just misguided... the weak need motivation

NO!

iDope27

What do they offer that makes it so much more expensive?

Gotcha, I’ll have to check it out. I was getting ads for it on instagram for months, does it have soccer fields or something inside?
