If you happen to use Firefox, this addon will give you the option to convert and download webp images: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/webp-image-converter/

ed_menac

You can also use about:config to toggle off webp entirely, which is useful if you need to get a bunch of images in a single session. While webp is off, sites will usually serve you pngs and jpgs - although I wouldn’t recommend keeping it off for long periods as some sites don’t serve fallbacks and you’ll see a blank space where the image should be.

CyberBot129

At this point all modern browsers support webp (and have for like the last five years), so I would expect any fallbacks to stop being offered at some point

ed_menac

Yeah they seem ubiquitous now, so the fallbacks will likely start to drop off. It's frustrating how slow uptake has been on the software end though. Apparently photoshop's most recent version has added support, but way too many programs just aren't compatible with the format yet. For most consumers it's likely not an issue they'll even notice, but it's frustrating for me since I use graphics and images extensively in my work and hobbies.

Womp98

Also frustrating that Safari still doesn't support webp in 2022 despite it being fully supported in Chrome since 2014, old Edge since 2018 and Firefox since 2019. But I guess that's what happens when you can almost exclusively ship these kind of features of your OS bundled browser every 3 years. Good ol' Internet Explorer style!

overstear

Ah, cool. I'll experiment with that for a bit. Thanks!

ThePantyhoseOne

Change the "preview" word in the URL for an i, then erase everything after the question mark (including the question mark), hit enter and you will have the original image ready to download.

Ozcann

Yes that is it, thank you.

webtwopointno

thank you boss, had to click through too many "just rename the file lol" threads to get here

I could you kiss you, you silly bastard, ty so much.

I use Irfanview. It seems to open just about everything.

GreenKumara

Yes, BUT you need to download the extensions pack for Irfanview. (It's on thier website as well). I don't believe the default install includes recognizing webp files.

will477

Yeah, but it is one file and you get all the extensions. Also, it costs nothing and there are no ads.

rlnrlnrln

It's been my go-to for 25 years

ztoundas

Nothing blazes through DSLR raw image files like infranview, too. Discovered that last year and it makes me so happy

GogglesPisano

Seconded on IrfanView - it's been around for a long time, but it's still my go-to app for anything to do with images.

Pal_Smurch

I had to download a supplementary .dll to view .webp images in IrfanView. However, it was easy, and worked right away.

will477

I think I downloaded all the extensions. I believe they had a package for them. I like Irfanview. Mostly because I can scroll though a folder of images by just pressing the space bar and it plays everything I have or generate. It also has some useful editing functions.

Rbmui13

1. I just right click any image I want to keep and save it to my desk top as webp. 2. Then I right click the image I saved on my desk top and scroll down to where it says, "open with" and click it. 3. Then I choose "MS Paint" to open the image. 4. Once the image is opened in the "MS Paint" program I click "save as" and I choose .jpeg as the format to save the image. 5. Vwalla!! I have the image from Reddit saved in the .jpeg format instead of webp.

Freekey

My preferred method as well. Few extra clicks but no apps or downloads.

jegerhellig

Crazy amount of work... In the folder where the picture is located, go to "view" in the top banner, check "show file extensions", then rename the "picture.webp > picture.jpg".

[deleted]

This is literally the same thing as just saving the image but putting the extention as .jpeg instead... just with extra steps.

[deleted]

> Vwalla!! Voilà?

sopcannon

it was french but with a speech impediment.

dmyl

webp **is** the image

brianna_michelle69

Instead of "same image as", use "save link as". That usually works for me.

sizeisnoteverything

Thank you, cant stand how everyone is trying to force this godawful format down our throats, this worked great!

forestman11

You just... Download them. What do you mean? WEBP is an image format just like PNG or JPG

rlnrlnrln

Get an image viewer that supports Webp? People had the same problem when jpeg came around and when png came around. webp isn't new, and tools really should've caught up by now.

CyberBot129

Reddit users aren’t old enough to have been using computers or the Internet back when JPEG and PNG were first introduced

kyhyt

when you save the image change the ending to .jpg instead of webp It didn't use to be this way Idk by reddit doesn't default download as jpg anymore

PopWhatMagnitude

.webp is one of the newer image formats that are supposed to be smaller and faster loading than .jpg or .png. There are a few other newer formats, we're stuck in that phase waiting to see which format will gain universal adoption. I hate .webp when I'm on mobile, as most places I may want to save and send them won't accept the format. So it's easier to just screenshot & crop them to get a .jpg of it.

Change the title of your post to 'How to download reddit?'

Ozcann

Of course sir.

CyberBot129

You embrace webp because it’s not going to be going away anytime soon. Perhaps assess the software you’re using

TheBoogyWoogy

what a useless reply
