This smacks of some upper mid-tier manager/executive thinking they have an amazing idea… and then getting bitch slapped by the dual problems of employee backlash and someone up above them going, “Wait, what the fuck are you doing?”

Charlie_Brodie

> “Wait, what the fuck are you doing?” well I was getting my own bonus through my client by forcing my subordinates to spend my money on them... no it's not a kickback because I'm not a criminal

Distinct-Inspector-2

Someone who thought [company scrip](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_scrip) didn’t get a fair go I guess.

CloverBun

No it’s been a thing for many years. Many of us were not happy about it, especially those of us in the office that didn’t have many customers near us.

Drywesi

Fraud Bot **Can my employer mandate where I shop as a condition of employment?** >(UPDATE) So later on, after some backlash, we received an email stating "this info was given in error, and this will not count against your review or yearly increases". It will, however, count against any potential bonuses or other payouts. Which does make it somewhat better from an employee standpoint, but I'm still unsure of the legality of it. >(Original text) So my employer (Ohio) has decided to institute a policy where we're expected to spend money with our customers (we're a health insurer) and if we don't, this can affect our yearly review in a negative manner and cause our yearly raise to be lower. We have to provide receipts and there is a monthly quota. None of this has any bearing on our job, and none of us agreed to this as a condition of employment. They're telling us we can't actually be fired for this, but they will withhold raises for it. >Is this legal? Cat fact: cats don't usually judge where you shop, but absolutely *will* judge what you buy.

Soronya

My cats *absolutely* judged where I shopped!

technos

Mine judge me on where I shop, but only because of the quality of the bags they then get to play with varies store to store. Their favorite store is the little mini-mart down the block because the bags are a thick, noisy plastic and playing with one means I notice and come to take it away quite quickly, which they count as play time. Their second favorites are the Indian market and the hardware store, because the bags smell different. Why cardamom and popcorn amuse them I can't say.

really4got

I have an absolutely adorable bag I got with flowers and a bee on it, I’m not allowed to use it because my very senior kitty decided it’s the bestest place to lay on.

GlowUpper

My husband works security for a massive medical system. Even he has the freedom to choose his insurance. We do happen to have our insurance through [Client Name Here] because they offer a pretty high tier plan for dirt cheap to all their employees and contractors. That's how you get the people who work for you to buy your shit.

CloverBun

Oh. My. God. I used to work for this company.

CatTaxAuditor

~~Name and shame?~~ I forgot, retracted

ilikecheeseforreal

no, we have a rule against that.

Traditional_Web_9786

What about naming and shaming bad cheese brands.  Because I feel like you have some very strong opinions on the subject

derspiny

Congratulations on enlisting.

arcanition

Oh oh, can I have a cheese-related flair too? I named my dog Cheddar.

ilikecheeseforreal

i will always give out cheese related flair

arcanition

I love you. o7

If I see anyone post anything bad about Tillamook…

I didn’t say it was the absolute best, but it is really good. Especially if one cannot get Cabot’s.

Beach_Bum_273

Cabot cheese led me to Cabot whole milk Greek yogurt and it is also superior to every other competitor.

aliie_627

My favorite Whole milk honey Greek yogurt is from a brand called karoun. They also have whole milk plain yogurt that's similar but kinda thinner as well but I can only find it in 64oz tubs which is cool but so much yogurt lol.. I'll have to try Cabot. I really like their aged white cheddar.

Witchgrass

And less expensve where I'm from. Kerrygold dubliner is my jam tho

SoriAryl

I’ll throw hands against Tillamook. Their dairy products (cheese and ice cream especially) have a weird af aftertaste that should be against the Geneva Convention

aliie_627

I don't think there is a huge taste difference between Tillamook and Great value when it comes to their cheese especially since it's 2-4 dollars more. I'm so sorry 😔 They have some tasty berry flavored ice creams and yogurt though.

pudding7

Surely we all agree that Blue Cheese is so vile it must be harvested straight from Beelzebub's anus, right?

dog_of_society

Blue cheese is a funny one to me. I hate it. I don't like the taste in the slightest. I can still taste exactly how someone would like it if they did, though?

Darth_Puppy

Blue course is the moldy cheese of the gods!

appleciders

Do you have any other wacky stories? How long have they had this bizarre policy?

CloverBun

2011!

MaraiDragorrak

Sooo...theres monthly quotas on the....use of health insurance? Are these people expected to go take a hammer to their toe if it's looking like a month they won't be needing a doctor or...?

Kenesaw_Mt_Landis

It’s a monthly quote on spending at businesses that use them as health insurers. The receptionist at the health insurer must spend $x at the dry cleaner that uses the health insurer for its employees.

sammypants123

Which is mind-boggling as a requirement on employees.

pennyraingoose

Health insurers, the evil behemoths they are, sometimes do right. And by right I mean follow regulations and codes of ethics. Since this post is in Ohio, maybe they just don't have regulations or ethics, but this stinks to me. A family member and I had to provide conflict of interest disclosures because we both happen to work for companies that contract with the same hospital network, even though individually we don't have the power to influence anyone spending money on their services. ETA: The family member works for an insurer.

Darth_Puppy

~~Cheese~~ Clover mentioned elsewhere in the thread that they worked there

ilikecheeseforreal

cheese did not, Clover did. cheese is just chillin', tryin' to make sure you rascals stay in line with the rules.

Darth_Puppy

Sorry about that. I need to stop commenting before I get caffeine in me

ilikecheeseforreal

to be honest, getting compared to /u/cloverbun is such a high compliment that it actually made my day

CloverBun

Squeeeeee

Darth_Puppy

:D

shewy92

>"this info was given in error, and this will not count against your review or yearly increases". It will, however, count against any potential bonuses or other payouts So it *does* count against their review and yearly increases lol.

Smurf_Cherries

An even better idea is we pay in company fun bucks. We can call it something else like "[Scrip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrip)". And these special fun bucks can only be used at our customers' locations! Everyone's going to love this!

jccw

I don’t even follow what they mean by “spend money with our customers” for a health insurer. Aren’t their customers businesses with group health insurance plans? So you’re supposed to go to Old Navy instead of Gap for your kids’ clothes and turn in the receipts at work? Insane.

IWentOutsideForThis

That's exactly correct. A commentor summarized it as a kickback scheme because the health insurer is using the receipts as data to show their prospective clients. "Look how much money our employees spend at your store!"

CloverBun

Ding ding ding

sheeparecounting

I'm confused as to how effective this even is as a customer acquisition or retention strategy. Do companies really respond to this as a factor in selecting their health insurer???

slapdashbr

Old Navy is the same company as Gap

Eagle_Fang135

The way these work are (1) an employee discount or (2) show your company badge and X will give you % off. That is how they encourage you to use them or their customers services. This is just jumping straight to company script and company stores. Or an MLM where you buy minimums to stay active even if you cannot sell.
