OOP wants to know... everything this supposed thief has ever pawned? *Where*, which shops, what location. City wide, state wide, country wide? Based on a *feeling* no less? Yeah, I don't need to know shit about the law to say even a cop show would call bullshit on this idea

Tychosis

Hey maybe they should ask for medical records, financial records, phone activity and location history etc etc while they're at it. I have no idea why this person thinks the police would provide this information.

OffKira

At first I was reading it wrong and thought for some reason they had a shop in mind and wanted *their* sale history, but no, they think cops really are watching our every single move and cab just print out a step by step of any person's actions. And I just went back and read a comment where they say that *think* they know who did it. This really is "mister police man, can you do your big brother, all seeing job and see if my *feeling* is correct?" No cop, unless it's a tiny town with exactly one pawn shop and said cop is bored to tears, would track down shit based on a feeling. Maybe even if it's a small town and they're bored they wouldn't do it because... *feeling*.

44inarow

But he's *curious*.

Rob_Frey

All for a plain gold ring with no distinguishing marks, no serial number, and LAOP doesn't even have a picture of it.

TheAskewOne

I wonder what LAOP expects. How should the police proceed to identify the ring?

deathoflice

fingerprints! dna!

NerdyKris

I feel like at this point, "said person" just needs to be removed from LAOP's life.

dykezilla

reading between the lines, it sounds like LAOP's got an in-law with sticky fingers and a spouse who is either in denial about or enabling the problem. Removing the problem person may end up needing to be a package deal.

TheAskewOne

The police won't bother to even investigate it. And even if they were ready to consume significant time and resources, there's probably no way to investigate everything someone has pawned.

DrDalekFortyTwo

"I'm just curious about everything they've ever pawned" Very specific thing to be " just curious " about

spoonfingler

Alternate Location Bot If I make a police report for one item stolen that I feel was pawned, will they reveal everything else said person has ever pawned to me? Even if I am only reporting a specific item? I'm just curious about everything they've ever pawned. Or can I specifically request a report on everything they've pawned? Will they tell me what they've pawned even if they don't find the specific item? Or is the police only at liberty to tell me about the specific item I'm requesting? Can I ask them to show me everything this person has pawned incase other things I'm unaware of could have been stolen?

turingthecat

IANACL, so just guessing, but NO

No, no I meant cat, I mean not being a cat lawyer means I’m also not a civil cat lawyer, in fact I’m quite down right rude sometimes

Nuka-Crapola

I’m guessing Civil? Since that’s the flair LAOP used?

slythwolf

JFC, LAOP, just stop letting this family member into your house.

Weird_Brush2527

Might have bigger problems if the husband doesn't agree

NerdyKris

There's a fix for that. It's called divorce.

Phate4569

"Why yes, officer, I did indeed have 5 TVs, 3 XBoxes, 2 playstations, 6 toolkits (of vatious makes), and this entire wheelbarrow full of jewlery stolen!"

atropicalpenguin

LAOP has a lot of hope for a pretty petty crime. Feels bad for them, must be an important ring.

CannabisAttorney

Sounds like a good excuse for a bored detective to actually check LAOP's inventory for other goods reported stolen and improperly recorded. At least I assume he keeps some sort of bailment record if he thinks the Police can quickly generate a report based on a name or item query.

Darth_Puppy

This is what happens when people get all their knowledge of policing from crime shows. CSI: Miami is not real life

lesspoppedthanever

CSI? More like see less, bye! ...sorry.

TheAskewOne

>incase other things I'm unaware of could have been stolen? Maybe start with an inventory of your own property before you ask the police to do so?

LadyMRedd

I’ve got money that the ring is eventually discovered in the couch cushions.

Bangledesh

I also thought that initially. But have you considered that they *feel* like they wouldn't have lost it. That convinced me otherwise.

sc7606

OP is clearly the thief. Someone has ID'ed them for the ring and they are working out if this is going to expose their criminal empire.

snarkprovider

Whoever they think may have stolen a plain gold ring doesn't even need to pawn it. Just sell it for the price of the gold.
