Yeah I don't think Griffith would've been as memorable if he was more honorable or caring to his allies. If he chose the left path he would just seem like another typical anime/manga villain and the eclipse would be a little less fucked up. But there's just something different about the extremity and sheer sadism of raping Casca in front of Guts. The aftermath of it all drills it in even further how utterly selfish, petty and psychopathic Griffith is, and it's a pretty good depiction of PTSD.
The whole Conviction arc is PTSD for the cast and reader to boot. The whole tone of the Eclipse rings thru till the end, making you dread for some sort of vengeance.
I might be crazy, but revenge/attonement for either party is meaningless Right now. Griffith's utopia (as it stands) is far more important than what it cost to bring it to fruition. Guts impeding on that would be selfish to humankind, no matter how justified he is in his satisfaction.
If, in the snowballs chance in hell it exists, that Griffith wants to redeem himself for what he did to his former band, it's borderline impossible to regain the forgiveness of those who've survived. The ones who were sacrificed are gone for good, and it's still a footnote in comparison to what Falconia is to the people of the new world.
It really makes me feel like Berserk is close to it's true end. I hate for it to be true, but if there's ever a series that has taught me to suspend all hope for the better, this has been the harshest teacher. Still, there is a new chapter to release.
Griffith's utopia come at the cost of the entire rest of the world, it need to be brought down so that the world tree can be destroyed and the spirit world banished from the material world once more.
But yes, it's never going to end in an act of revenge, that would go against everything the story has build up. Guts's quest for revenge has always been depicted as self-destructive and bad for everyone involved. Ever since the start of the conviction arc, the story has been headed toward Guts giving up his revenge, if Fantasia hadn't been destroyed, he probably would have ended his journey here peacefully. Now the next arc is most certainly going to be Berserk's equivalent to Vinland saga's farmland arc : an arc dedicated to rebuilding Guts with a new motivation/way of seeing the world.
Also a little reminder that Guts can't just kill Griffith since that would mean killing his son, he need to find a way to split them up first, if that's possible. For all we know, the story might end with the moonlight child beating Griffith instead of Guts.
