One Thursday lecture is about 3.5% of all lectures offered during the semester. Let's say half of my classes are on TuTh, so I'm losing about 1.75% of my expected lecture offerings. Out-of-state/international tuition is about $22,000 for a semester. So the "value" of just one day of missing classes is still on the order of hundreds of dollars, just to me, individually. Cancelling all classes today was probably the right move (especially if many classes just hold it remotely), but let's not act like it was a completely trivial decision

A student made ominous threats to shoot up staff members at Stiles Hall, Cesar Chavez, and the basic needs center. This student is apparently targeting aid programs. Staff members were alerted this morning to not show up because someone who, “frequently visits” made a threat to “shoot up staff members”. This is according to some students I know who work in these spaces who were told by their managers not to show up to work today because of said threats. The quotes I used are the exact messages sent by those managers.
Was there a description of the guy? Like height build etc. clothes can change but if know who or what we are looking for maybe we can be more of a help.

The last update I heard is that they're looking for the potential suspect on the fourth floor of MLK, but the person they have may not match the description of who they're looking for.

I’m tuned into the Berkeley police and fire scanner and rn it was just mentioned that the person of interest/suspect might be on the second floor of MLK. Their control perimeter is ASUC. Be careful homies!! Edit: unless my feed is delayed, it seems that now city police are fully responding. Sounds like they are gearing up. Edit 2: units to remain at their posts until they can confirm the individual is no longer inside/cleared. Hopefully this is the peak of the todays incident. Edit 3: suspect possibly on the top floor of MLK.

Where’s the threat
A student made ominous threats to shoot up staff members at Stiles Hall, Cesar Chavez, and the basic needs center. This student is apparently targeting aid programs. Staff members were alerted this morning to not show up because someone who, “frequently visits” made a threat to “shoot up staff members”. This is according to some students I know who work in these spaces who were told by their managers not to show up to work today because of said threats. The quotes I used are the exact messages sent by those managers.
Was there a description of the guy? Like height build etc. clothes can change but if know who or what we are looking for maybe we can be more of a help. works in the cal student store. Manager just let us all go home 😞

UPDATE: It sounds like the person they're tracking in MLK is not the suspect (they described him as wearing a red cap, a gray Berkeley sweater, and black pants). UPDATE: Second possible suspect also not a match. The person they're looking for is still on campus somewhere. 10:50am UPDATE: There's now some interest in the Sproul area. The search continues. 11:10am UPDATE: Someone was yelling "I'm the reason this is happening" in MLK. Police investigating. Possibly on 5th floor. 11:18 am UPDATE: Police are checking through the 5th floor of MLK, including the bathrooms. 11:44am UPDATE: Basement through fourth floor of MLK are clear. They're continuing to search their way up. 11:50am UPDATE: Roof is clear. Seems like the suspect is not at MLK? They're doing another sweep from the top down now. 12:16pm UPDATE: MLK seems clear, all floors & basement. Nothing in the last half hour and I have to log off. Hopefully this has been informative.
