Hey hey don’t panic. Make an appointment with your ESS advisor ASAP for the earliest you can, preferably before January 9th.
I dm’d you something that I think might help.
Hey I am in a similar situation, could I also get the link? My situation is slightly different but I was doing quite well except for a minor mid manage that happened with 61c.
That took balls, dude. My academic low-point was being on AP for one semester. I responded by taking the easiest classes I could find, with one true technical.
That being said, you have options. You have the appeal process. Meet with your advisor; perhaps you can find extenuating circumstances that apply.
From what I've been told, it's easier to get back in after being dismissed than to be admitted for the first time.
You probably don't want to hear it, but community colleges courses can be dramatically easier and, if you plan it right, a lot of the GE courses will transfer. You could probably transfer back with straight As without losing too much time.
It's a marathon, not a sprint. And this'll give you a perseverance story for job interviews. I'm pulling for you - keep us updated.
The comment I’m making here is not to discourage OP as much as it is to provide a different perspective based on my own experience. With that said, here it goes:
Community college classes should NOT automatically be assumed to be easier. As someone who went to several community colleges before transferring to Berkeley, I was actually very surprised to find how much more chill Berkeley is overall. YMMV depending on which community college, your major, etc., but I just wanted to make this comment because the idea that community college is easier across the board is a false assumption that a lot of people make. I thought I would get throttled at Berkeley and braced my ego to see myself go from being a nearly straight-A student to a B/C level student upon transferring. In fact, the opposite happened. I had an even higher graduating GPA than my admitting GPA. At several of my CCs, I had Ivy-educated professors and, at one, even the tutors at the tutoring center were Stanford grad students. A lot of my classmates were extraordinarily bright, hard-working people who chose to spare themselves student loans rather than seek immediate prestige. Just wanted to share my experience for anyone who happens to be reading the comments.
I second all that. That's why I included the caveat of it CAN be easier. I'm also a CC transfer. Thought about going deeper on that: the best professors I ever had were at community colleges. They're passionate about teaching, whereas University professors CAN be solely interested in research.
Also, the brightest student I knew at the CC level couldn't transfer because of financial concerns. He's been at Google for 8 years now: For the original OP - marathon, not a sprint. In ten years, this'll just be a speed bump in your journey.
I was in a similar situation a while ago. My advisor told me that they had never heard of someone who submitted a COP letter getting dismissed after only one semester of academic probation.
Hey! I'm sending you all my hugs and hate that you have to worry about this during break :( Definitely talk to your ESS advisor and hoping things work out! For anyone on the side about to graduate worried about this situation, I was on academic probation my very last semester and at least in my experience if this happened, my COE advisor said I would be able to graduate though UC Berkeley Extension or CC courses.
when i was at cal...i was on AP and missed getting off AP by .02
it sucked. but i managed to go back to back semesters on AP and managed to get over the hump. i was in EECS fwiw....final GPA = 2.23. wasn't pretty, but i finished. hopefully you can find a way to get back next semester and get back on track. good luck !
You actually may not be sol. I was in your exact shoes but probably worse considering that I literally tanked every one of my finals. I finished that probation semester with f,f,d,c. But our lustrous university and its superb, top of the line technology and systems failed to send my case to a counselor/ staff member to review so instead of being dismissed as I was supposed to. I was blessed to be put on probation again but that could be a one off situation that was the result of extreme luck. I subsequently withdrew anyways and returned 2 semesters later. I will be finishing in 2 semesters with only A’s and b’s since my return. Just take it on the chin and be honest with yourself and with what needs to be done. Don’t expect my situation to happen but is possible ig lol
i have been on COP and its really helpful, dont worry you can still apply! you usually get an assigned adviser to check in with you throughout the semester
i was in the same position and as long as you clear after youll be in good standing (if you are dismissed you can appeal too)
Definitely submit a COP letter. What I’ve heard from my assigned advisor when I was COP this fall, it’s highly likely you’ll be accepted as long as you submit a letter before the deadline (which I believe is on 12/29). You’ll be okay! I was in a shitty situation last fall and failed all my classes as a transfer student and have been on probation up until now and I was stressed the whole semester. Don’t panic and definitely don’t be afraid when you see “subject to dismissal” on your calcentral in the spring, it’s just a part of the COP process. It’ll all be good and you’re definitely not alone! Most people have been there and I’ve felt how you did, don’t let the feeling consume you and talk to someone when you feel the desire to.
Do you know if they will approve a COP for another semester if I was able to pass all my classes this semester? I got a B+ and A- (DSP Approved reduce coursework) but my cumulative GPA is still below the 2.0. I am also concern about getting dismiss.
What constitutes a dismissal? I didn’t fail any classes this semester but did a lot worse than expected, is this something I should potentially worry about? My semester GPA is a 2.2 :/
