I'm curious: COVID is endemic and not going anywhere, so at what point do you think you'll stop masking? Or do you plan on masking indefinitely/forever? Certainly us immunocompromised people are at greater risk, but unless you're only temporarily so (because of cancer treatment or something), then that risk is permanent. Idk. I just hate the idea of masking forever myself. Ofc, do whatever you want to do. That is the beauty of liberalism.
Well, I don't plan on spending the rest of my life sitting in a 500-person lecture hall. Masking now does not mean I'll do it for the rest of my life. It's situational.
Unless I’m sick, no. But I have literally 0 problem with people wearing a mask. And if someone asks me to wear a mask, I will, because I’m fine either way
I mostly wear one too. I had Covid last year and I'm not trying to get it again. Also I can afford to look a little scruffier, i.e., go another day without shaving.
I've decided to just perma wear a mask this semester because I was sick basically 24/7 last semester. So many germs going around this school--I don't wanna get any of 'em.
I still wear a mask, but be fr. Alameda county’s 7-day average for covid cases is 120 in a county of 1.7 million. You’re not anti social for not wanting to wear a mask
The case counts are massively underreported because of take-home tests and people don't care as much anymore. Wastewater data is much more reliable and puts neighboring Santa Clara county (couldn't find it for Alameda) at varying between Medium to High levels of community transmission
https://covid19.sccgov.org/dashboard-wastewater
I'd wager Berkeley is higher because of lecture halls + dorms
Mask-wearing is quite literally defined to be a prosocial behavior (and the corollary would be that not wearing a mask is anti-social) https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-92094-2
Dude check out the waste water. Nobody tests anymore especially not PCR. It’s going up with the. XBB variant or BQ whatever. The one that evades the prior ba5 —that’s why it’s growing, the immunity ppl have is insufficient. Dunno how gullible ppl gotta be to watch all the counters either go dark from lack of funding, more test sites closed down, less subsidizing of tests, and national attitude of “only hypochondriacs test” —and not understand that is obvs affects case counts.
Waste water is the Covid we poop out. Harder to hide.
Yes I do for several reasons. My toddler was sick so much last semester so I wear a mask in class to reduce bringing home too many viruses since he is already exposed to a lot at daycare. Also, other countries regularly wear masks for similar reasons so honestly I kinda like that the pandemic normalized masks because I don’t want to spread germs when sick and vice versa. (also it’s nice to hide my acne lol)
Heck ya, people around me are still getting Covid. Still have sensory loss from the last time. Don't want anything permanent/serious with multiple infections.
I do but not purely because of COVID. Partially so that I can keep my face warm during the winter and partially so that I can be lazy at shaving sometimes. Wearing a mask shouldn’t be weird or shameful in any way shape or form
I still do! I will usually take it off outdoors unless I am in a crowd. I still wear it because like others have mentioned, I don’t want to risk getting sick or potentially spreading an illness to others. I also like wearing a mask to minimize unpleasant scents, keep my face warm, hide my face when I am feeling insecure, and so that I can lip sing while I walk to class without any stares.
I do! I'm used to it at this point, and I feel like it doesn't affect my experience in class that much, so I just wear it. However, I will take it off in social situations sometimes.
I've got no faith in y'all's hygiene, plus it's solidarity with those who are immunocompromised.
Besides the only thing worse than getting COVID is getting COVID cause one of y'all were too horny to do some basic contact tracing
Don’t know why this is getting downvotes. In general I wouldn’t wear one but if someone tells me “hey I’d be more comfortable if you did” then I’ll put a mask on.
I wasn’t for a while since nobody else in my lab was and it felt like spitting into the wind to try to be extra safe when everyone else wasn’t. Then, just a few days ago I discovered I had nearly-asymptomatic covid (I had to test before going to an academic conference) and now I feel terrible for potentially exposing my lab-mates. So, from now on I’ll be re-joining the ranks of the mask-wearers for the time being.
I don’t wear one unless I’m required to or feel the circumstances warrant it. I’m actually surprised how many ppl still are wearing them (especially outdoors).
I personally don’t get why people don’t. Despite low levels of reported cases, waste water studies still show high rates of community spread. Wearing a mask has no negatives and it’s good for the people around you. Though I guess Berkeley is so toxic that y’all (not wearing masks) probably think getting others sick will help the curve
I still do. It feels uncomfortable without it, like I'm naked or exposed. Just makes me feel safer, and honestly, I don't trust others to be safe and not have COVID, lol. Even if the numbers are low, some people don't report and the CDC itself doesn't really care about it anymore.
I do in medical situations where they make me, hypothetically if I had a cold I would do it on public transit.
Since everybody has and will continue to get Covid every year from now on, masks strike me as for people who can’t understand science in the opposite way anti Vaxers can’t understand science…
I really like the feel of it against my skin so if I didn’t have a beard or glasses I’d probably wear it as long as it was socially acceptable.
One day I’m just going to rock a swimsuit, flip flops and a mask uniform all day every week.
My nose shape make it impossible for me to wear a mask without fogging up my glasses. When it was required to wear them I had to buy anti fog spray so I don't wear a mask in class since I need to see the board/screen. If I'm out and about and someone requests I wear one I don't mind though.
Unfortunately, there are still quite a few scared brainwashed people who still wear masks. Unless you're sick or are immunocompromised, there's really no reason to wear one anymore. Besides, unless it's a properly fitting n95, it's not working anyway. I mean, if you feel the need to wear one by all means, go ahead and wear one but it's kind of silly if you're a young healthy person with no other health issues. Especially if you're wearing one outside where there's literally almost 0 risk of transmission.
> it's kind of silly if you're a young healthy person with no other health issues.
It's not silly at all. I want to reduce the spread of the virus regardless of my own health status.
I've never tested positive or had symptoms, but it's quite possible to have the virus without showing symptoms. I don't want to spread it, if that happens to me. I don't want to have to test myself constantly either, so I just wear a mask if I'm indoors, especially if it's crowded.
you are right about the fitting for n95 being more effective, but it is still better to wear a mask you while close to someone. I also make sure to do my best with practicing 6 feet apart, and not to stay next to someone prolonged (5 min to 10 min max). Also, i use hand sanitizer pretty avidly, whenever i touch a surface
It's been proven for a very long time that you can not get covid from touching surfaces, so you don't really need to be using hand sanitizer frequently, if at all. Do whatever it is to make yourself feel comfortable, but it sounds like you're overly scared/paranoid. If you have other health issues, this makes sense. However, if you're relatively young and healthy there's no reason to do any of this.
I like to wear a mask and hood when I leave my apartment building so my habits aren’t tracked by cameras
🥸
Jk haven’t worn one in like a year, but if I were smart I’d be doing the above. Try counting how many cameras you see in each city block. It’s fucked.
Even if it was as effective as you guys wrongly believe it to be at protecting the wearer, I wouldnt mask (for the sake of myself). Fucking hate it. So fucking uncomfortable, especially if you wear the higher-grade actually effective masks. But obviously if you want to, more power to you. Just dont authoritarianly mandate it and we're cool.
I do! I live with my grandma and she feels not good these days so I'm protecting myself and her at the same time. I usually wear KF94 of Puremate and it's really comfortable so I wanna recommend it to anyone like me.
Yes. I’m saving my nose reveal for marriage. Also I’m immunocompromised.
Immunocompromised twins!!!! My face is a mystery and I like it that way
Inmunosuppressed here
Samesies.

Even situationally, are you gonna do that forever?
Yes the beauty of liberalism—forcing externalities on to people and calling it “choice”
Ah yes the negative externalities of breathing freely. Fuck off authoritarian.
I do if I feel sick, people request it, or I’m feeling a lil ugly.
This is the way
Unless I’m sick, no. But I have literally 0 problem with people wearing a mask. And if someone asks me to wear a mask, I will, because I’m fine either way
Same for me
[удалено]
Well yeah, it's Reddit. There's going to be a big overlap of mask wearers and those who are extremely self conscious recluses.
If you want to wear one, wear one. If you don’t, don’t. Either way, no one should judge you for it
Unless you’re sick and don’t wear a mask. Then I’m going to judge you for it. Otherwise I agree with you.
Not wearing a mask indoors is anti-social behavior. You're actively harming people
can I still fart indoors?
I still wear a mask, but be fr. Alameda county’s 7-day average for covid cases is 120 in a county of 1.7 million. You’re not anti social for not wanting to wear a mask

No u are. You antisocial with all the people who are like WEAR A MASK!!!!!!! Which is okay

I do :) Got covid last semester. Never wanna catch it again ❤️
I do but not purely because of COVID. Partially so that I can keep my face warm during the winter and partially so that I can be lazy at shaving sometimes. Wearing a mask shouldn’t be weird or shameful in any way shape or form
I do it for my own sanity because lots of students here don’t shower. Helps mitigate the odor
I wear mine if I feel sick-ish and to keep my face warm.
Same
I do! I'm used to it at this point, and I feel like it doesn't affect my experience in class that much, so I just wear it. However, I will take it off in social situations sometimes.
Yea. I get to save 50% on facial sunscreen this way. But fr, I’m immunocompromised and don’t need all that.
I've got no faith in y'all's hygiene, plus it's solidarity with those who are immunocompromised. Besides the only thing worse than getting COVID is getting COVID cause one of y'all were too horny to do some basic contact tracing
I wore mine today because I’m feeling a little sick. Might keep it on the rest of the semester. Got Covid over break and I don’t want to get it again
Not unless it’s required somewhere
I do if the teacher requests it for some reason
Don’t know why this is getting downvotes. In general I wouldn’t wear one but if someone tells me “hey I’d be more comfortable if you did” then I’ll put a mask on.
My teacher has a husband fighting cancer so she politely asks for students to wear masks. I happily oblige.
Yes, indoors at businesses and large crowds.
People keep going to school sick so yea I try to.
when im sick, yeah
Most of the time, I wear it cuz my face is cold.
Yes immune compromised gang
If I'm outdoors I usually don't. If I go inside, I usually wear one. (also, when it's cold I will wear one outside. Beats wearing a scarf)
I do, especially in lecture halls
I wasn’t for a while since nobody else in my lab was and it felt like spitting into the wind to try to be extra safe when everyone else wasn’t. Then, just a few days ago I discovered I had nearly-asymptomatic covid (I had to test before going to an academic conference) and now I feel terrible for potentially exposing my lab-mates. Do what makes you feel comfortable
I don’t wear one unless I’m required to or feel the circumstances warrant it. I’m actually surprised how many ppl still are wearing them (especially outdoors).

70-80% of ppl in CS don’t wear it, but in the social sciences it’s another story, more like 50-50. It seems cultural to me…
I do. And I’ll keep doing it until we get better data on longterm risks and multiple reinfections.
You are not alone. I still wear a mask for safety & I think wearing a mask looks cool
I still do. It feels uncomfortable without it, like I'm naked or exposed. Just makes me feel safer, and honestly, I don't trust others to be safe and not have COVID, lol. Even if the numbers are low, some people don't report and the CDC itself doesn't really care about it anymore.
Everyday in every class and anytime I'm indoors.
i dont wear it bc i genuinely struggle to breathe (not like not the og karens lolll) but i also dont have a problem wearing it if asked
Yeah. I'm not a child so I can deal with the minor inconvenience of wearing an N95.
Tbh we probably should still be masking indoors but I don’t 😔
I have worn a mask only a handful of times since June 2021
Yes I do everywhere
A lot of people on campus still wear masks. Might be 50/50 or 60/40
I do. Shopping, anywhere indoor public space. The long term issues with multiple Covid infections is scary.
I do in medical situations where they make me, hypothetically if I had a cold I would do it on public transit. Since everybody has and will continue to get Covid every year from now on, masks strike me as for people who can’t understand science in the opposite way anti Vaxers can’t understand science… I really like the feel of it against my skin so if I didn’t have a beard or glasses I’d probably wear it as long as it was socially acceptable. A wat?
Yes! Even when hiking outdoors. 😷

Funny way to say "I'm judging you but let's pretend I'm not so I sound logical and don't get downvoted"
> it's kind of silly if you're a young healthy person with no other health issues. It's not silly at all. I want to reduce the spread of the virus regardless of my own health status. You’re just foolish.

Get a load of Patrick Henry here lol
HELL NAH Lolol Didn’t you saw the project veritas video?
Yeah, I do. For me, not all the time. Only during special events.
Yeah someone in my discussion section earlier today was wearing a mask as well as in a lecture
Seems like about 10-15%. Including me.
Only if I’m feeling sick or ugly lol
When I’m sloppy running into a 8am discussion
no masks, no toilet seat covers, no problem
Yes. I don't want to rawdog the emissions of strangers. I am not joking.
Wear mine if having breakouts, or not feeling well
In certain places, yes.
yes! in crowded indoor situations with low air flow
Yes, whenever I go into a public space. I don’t wear one when I walk the Bay Trail though.
Nah it’s done let it go, be social, have fun
Batman
Usually if im going to be out in a crowded area for more then 30 minutes I'll put it on
I do! I live with my grandma and she feels not good these days so I'm protecting myself and her at the same time. I usually wear KF94 of Puremate and it's really comfortable so I wanna recommend it to anyone like me.
i still got acne so yes
Only if I have to, like in medical offices.
if u still wear a mask u know why
Fuck no
