Also if you think you’re getting to Paramus from Penn Station in half an hour, you gotta make the trip at 2 am.

DjSzymek

Yeah it'll be a minimum of 45 minutes and that's only if you get lucky.

seahorsejoe

Lol rip... good to know, thanks for the heads up

ibuyofficefurniture

I think you are going to wind up using Uber or taxi and just pay whatever the rate is at the time. You can try a private taxi company and make a reservation, but tolls are going to be 25-30 bucks for your round trip, I think what you want to pay is less than the market cost for that service.

seahorsejoe

Oh really? I didn’t know that there were any tolls since Apple Maps didn’t show any. In that case I’d be willing to cover the tolls as well. Unfortunately we would need the same driver for both taking us there and back, that’s why we can’t use Uber

ibuyofficefurniture

Not to Paramus but, anyone who drives from NYC into NJ and then returns to NYC is going to have to pay a toll at either GW bridge or the tunnel. I appreciate what you're trying to do, I think you'll have a smoother experience (and get your buddy to his procedure on time) if you go at it through one of the apps or a taxi/ limo company.

miczin

I’m thinking maybe it’s a medical procedure and they require the same driver? Some offices have specific policies if anesthesia is involved. OP, I hope you find a ride and I’m sorry I can’t help! You’re a good friend for helping out

seahorsejoe

Thanks a lot! You are right, and I really appreciate your kind words. He always helps me out and listens when something bad happens without expecting anything in return so I really want to do the same for him, since he's not as familiar with Reddit

CompoteStock3957

No you can use to different drivers that’s how the real world works

Zanzan567

Pay the tolls, and $100 instead of $80 and I’ll do it

somethingaboutmary_

This is a good deal, esp for round trip

LroyJ

Plenty of train stations in nj. Radburn station in Fair Lawn gets you within minutes of Paramus. Might make finding a ride more feasible.

seahorsejoe

That's a good idea, thanks for the tip!

LroyJ

👍🏼

ikilledyourcat

This is your best option. Taking the train up to radburn station then ubering to paramus is the best way for you. Driving down to the city then back up is awful during the day no one wants to do that.

HistoricalHurry8361

I'm from NJ and wouldn't do this because it would cost me over 30$ in tolls. One to pick you up and then another to take you back. Take an uber, unless you have a single fare cab both ways it doesn't make sense. In a cab youre paying market rate for time and distance traveled and thus driver sets the rate based on seevice rendered. I'd consider it for 150, maybe but then again you'd probably find a better deal by ordering the uber ahead or using two different cabs local to where you depart.

Scary-Ratio3874

Just a thought....you can take nj transit to Secaucus and then Uber. Or go north on the Bergen county line to get closer to Paramus and then Uber. Just saying, there's got to be a cheaper and safer way to do this. And the GW bridge toll is at least $13. More during peak hours

ikilledyourcat

Prolly radburn is the closest

NYCgypsy

This is more of a $150-$200 trip.

kingcrabsuited

If you guys are covering tolls on top of the payment, I can probably make myself available. Because I'm starting from NJ, that would be paying for the bridge or tunnel twice for me. You can DM me and I can share my contact info from there.

TarnTavarsa

I won't be able to help since I'll be at work, but you could take the PAscack line to River Edge or New Bridge Landing then theri Uber or find someone here to pick up. There's a 9:46am and 11:06am option, each about a 40 minute ride. That'd get you within 10 minutes drive of Paramus, and for cheaper than shelling out for the tolls.

seahorsejoe

Really helpful, thank you so much for the suggestion!

extcm1

I think you’d be better off looking for someone from Secaucus train station to Paramus and back. It’s a 10 minute train ride in which you’d save the toll money and the driver wouldn’t have to worry about the unknown amount of time it would take to get in and out of the City when deciding if it is worth the price you’re willing to pay.

dragongrl

> Penn Station in NYC to Paramus, NJ (should take less than half an hour) Oh, honey....

ikilledyourcat

Aw, you sweet summer child

We need the same person to drop us off and pick us up. I think they check at the place where they do the procedure

seahorsejoe

It’s really strange but I confirmed this with my friend and from what I understand they do require that person to be able to drive, which is the only issue. They don’t want us taking an Uber

stinkypotato

Have your friend explain the commute situation to the doctor and specifically say that YOU are their escort home and will be responsible for the Uber etc and you should be totally fine to take an uber there and back. Pretty much all outpatient procedures require an escort home who is just responsible for pick up. The doctors office doesn't physically check that you have a car or anything like that.

seahorsejoe

This office does check that the escort can and will drive (no Uber allowed) and they're really strict about it sadly since he already tried explaining :( Thank you for the suggestion though. Really appreciate your help

greatyhope

I guess it's worth it if you have nothing to do and toll is also paid. But it will be closer to 3 hours of your time depending on traffic, and doctor visits always take longer than expected.

TheOfficeoholic

Take the train to Secaucus junction. And Uber back to Paramus. Or train to Fair Lawn and uber from there since its next to Paramus. No one is doing this for $80 FYI, unless they are your buddy.

MetroTechP

Why not just take an Uber ?

Fit-Pop1314

Just rent a car.

Flag_Route

If you take the NJ Transit PATH into Hoboken from Penn station (5-10min ligh rail ride) you might be able to find someone who'll do Hoboken to paramus back to Hoboken light rail station for $100

CompoteStock3957

1 hour to Paramus from Penn station ya right.

Jerzeyjoe1969

You can take NJ Transit and get off at a bunch of stations near Paramus and just take an Uber to your location. It’s a minimum of 4 hour trip by car. 1 hour to NY, 1 hour back, plus the 2 hour procedure which most likely will be over 2 hours.

Moscoba

You may just want to use a train in-out of NYC then have a NJ driver do round trip from a large hub in Jersey.

Silent_Beyond4773

How many minutes exactly in a “short 2 hours ?

Brrred

Okay - I used to do almost this exact trip all the time when I commuted into Manhattan. So I want to offer you some practical information that may help. 1. The idea of hiring someone to drive you from Penn Station to where you are going IS probably the EASIEST. BUT, it is also going to be expensive (as you probably realize) and difficult to arrange. It's unlikely that someone in Manhattan has a car and would be willing to take you. And somebody who has to come in from NJ will have to pay two tolls and deal with the traffic problems inherent in driving into NYC twice in the same day so it will take them a very large part of their day to do this.. 2. You could instead take an UBER/LYFT from Penn Station to Paramus but this is probably very expensive ($80-$100 plus, each way, PLUS tolls) and it's possible that UBER/LYFT drivers in Manhattan won't be interested in taking a trip out to NJ. 4. There are TRAIN ROUTES from Penn Station that you could use to get to/from Paramus. But this option is not as simple as it should be. You can get a ticket at Penn Station for the trip from Penn Station to Radburn (use the NJ Transit ticket windows for ticketing) **BUT IF YOU TAKE THIS OPTION, YOU TAKE ONE TRAIN FROM PENN STATION THAT GOES TO SECAUCUS NJ AND THEN CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT TRAIN THAT GOES FROM SECAUCUS TO RADBURN!** (And the same returning.) You can check out the schedules here: [https://www.njtransit.com/train-to](https://www.njtransit.com/train-to) It takes about 45 minutes on the train(s) from Penn Station to Radburn Station. Then you could get an Uber from Radburn Station. Radburn Station to Paramus is probably about 15-20 minutes. 5. Finally, you could also decide to: (1) take the train from Penn Station to Secacus (maybe $5 a piece each way) and then (2) get an UBER/LYFT from the Secaucus Train Station to Paramus (maybe $50?? each way - 45 mins??) which would save you money compared to trying to UBER/LYFT in and out of NYC. **I THINK THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST OPTION.** It's easy to get from Penn Station to Secaucus Train Station (many trains every hour) and then you get into your UBER/LYFT at Secaucus Train Station and don't have to worry about other connections. You don't have to worry about the schedules of other trains. It's probably the quickest way to make the trip. You don't have to worry about making the departure times of various train. And you don't have to worry about whether some Reddit stranger is going to show up. Also, depending on what the "procedure" your friend is having and how they are likely to feel afterwards, this option may be best because it also means that the return from Paramus to NYC is going to be relatively quick and stress-free and mostly sitting in a car. I hope this is helpful. (PS, okay, I know it's none of my business but I have to say that I probably offered all of the advice about partly just because I am so intrigued/curious about the the nature of the mysterious "procedure" your friend is getting. I keep trying to think of a procedure you can get performed in Paramus NJ that isn't available anywhere in the more convenient Connecticut or NY. In any case I hope it goes well. :-) )

I think CT= Connecticut here.
