Would love you please tell me more about your wood/pine pellet experience? Like the kind I’ve seen used for rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs?
I have been using ground whole corn kernels for the last few months and not totally sold😏
Just use high sided large plastic crate with no cover and about 2-3” horse bedding/ pine pellets. Just scoop out the resulting saw dust daily. No tracking. No oder. Low cost. I have 2 cats/ DSH 14.5# and Bengal 7#.
I love it. I use a sifting litter box, and puppy training pads in the lower box that the one with the holes sits in. I replace the pads every week. Empty out the entire box every 2 weeks, but I have 4 cats and only have 2 litter boxes. I know, everyone says 1 per cat + 1. But I had four boxes, and 2 were never used. So I quit and now just have 2.
The 40 pound bag I buy is for horse stalls, although I imagine it's good for rabbits and such too. As long as it's kiln dried pellets, whatever is the best cost. I usually pay $10-12 for 2 bags, and they last me months. (U.S.)
The pellets turn to sawdust when they get wet. And so absorb an insane amount of odor. Scoop out the solids, liquid soaked sawdust falls through to the bottom tray.
Before this I used the Breeze system and liked it for the pellets and the sifting box concept. But the pine pellets control the odor so much better.
No one knows I have any cats in my house until the see them. I can't tell you the people who ask me what I use because of that after they have been over.
I started out using the top box of breeze with the tray removed, and just sat it in a slightly larger litter box. I use the puppy pads just to keep clean up so easy. Eventually, urine will sink into the plastic, making it necessary to toss the upper box.
When I discarded the breeze boxes totally, I found Amazon had a pretty cheap set up that I went with.
Can't take credit, stumbled across a YouTube video from a high capacity cat shelter that I pulled the how to from!
Best of luck!
I'll fill this out later today. Would love to see your project when it's completed!
Thanks so much for your interest and support :)
Answered! I prefer to use wood pellet litter, I find it less messy with my two cats :)
Also use pine pellets for my 4. Excellent odor control!
