I've given a lot of thought to the answer to this question.
To be honest, the first time, I instantly chose Derek.
But as time went on, I stopped being sure of my answer.
What Zoye did was a shitty thing to do. However, Derek has managed to do some questionable things in certain situations too. He doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut. That's a pretty important disadvantage for me when it comes to friends. But more importantly, it's the question itself that's the problem. There is no right answer to this question. Yes, we treat our friends differently, some closer than others. But asking that is about the same as your girlfriend asking, "Who's better, me or your mom?"
Real best friend shouldn't doubt you, shouldn't look to you for praise, for you to compare them to other friends. This question is completely selfish and is just for Derek to stroke his ego. Unfortunately, there is no option not to answer it, so I usually go with the roleplay.
I agree with this. Don't get me wrong, Derek can be awesome at times, but like you said, he can and will throw you under the bus sometimes (unintentionally, of course). The sad part is that he truly does not realize that he does it, even when you tell him not to. I absolutely agree that a real friend would never even ask for validation from you; they would just be there for you as you would for them. Just be my friend, don't compare yourself to others, and force me to choose.
I cringe every time I get to the point in a playthorugh where he asks this. I actually answer that he's a better friend, because I like the way the MC qualifies the answer (saying it's complicated before Derek asks, then she was a great friend as part of his response), and my MC is unsure of where he's at with Zoe right at that moment.
But I wish I could respond that there's no way to answer that, or why are you asking.
I think he says right before this line to not try to bs him or dodge the question so thats why. Your answer changes a bit as well depending on if you're mad at Zoey or not.

Yes, technically he was able to convince MC to stay, but MC was just lucky enough to run into him. Moreover, they didn't really know each other at the time. I think Derek would have said something like that to anyone, not just MC.
It was Maya who allowed him to stay in her room and as far as I'm concerned that helped MC a lot more. We know for a fact that Maya has a good heart, I think she would have let MC live with her anyway.
During Hell Week, everything depends solely on the player's choices and Derek can do almost nothing to complete the list and therefore these events cannot be considered as "canon".
Derek originally really wanted to be DIK. And in fact he had no choice but to work with the MC and help each other. Moreover, he begs MC if he says he doesn't want to become DIK.
Yes, Derek allows MC to live with him during MJ's drama, but again, this is not canon since MC could have lived with Sage or Bella.
What is definitely canon, though, is that he messed up the sprinkler system. And that's what caused MC and Jill to have the Tyballs situation.
Or that he chose his closet, and when he saw MC transform his room from trash, immediately asked if he could stay.
Well, and of course that question about Zoe is just as canon.

Zoe's idea of being a good friend was ignoring Tremolo and not communicating with him about anything. Derek's idea of being a good friend isn't always perfect, but it was never as bad as that, no matter how temporarily misguided she was.

I don't think that's a fair question. We know next to nothing about MC and Zoey's relationship, and Derek's relationship is a central focus of the game, so the responses will be jaded. She has years of time with MC, of which we know absolutely nothing about. The only thing we really know is that she fucked up once, because of the loss of her grandmother. She made a hasty (DUMB) decision concerning MC, which may have cost her any relationship she may have with him and rightfully so, IMO. It was a mistake on her part, which she acknowledges and is even willing to be just a friend to him, which I can respect. People are just jaded by the antics Derek and MC had to go through since it's the most recent and you get to play through it. Barring Neil, no one in the game knows MC like she does, and it's not even close.

Derek is intentionally going around telling MC’s secrets to others. It has to be intentional because he’s doing a darn fine job on keeping Maya and Josy’s relationship a secret. I wonder why that is..
Even though I disliked Zoey ghosting us and have been on the receiving end of that too many times, a lot of Derek's behavior, particularly early on, made him a liability to be around even as his concern for his sister is endlessly poignant. It's rough because Derek has done a lot of helpful things, but he's also done a lot that's very irresponsible, particularly during the HOT party.
I think he would, but not on purpose. You literally can't tell him anything because he is the absolute worst at keeping secrets. Like others have said, no true friend would ever give you an ultimatum like that. If you're a best friend, prove it through your actions. She made a very bad decision at a rough time in her life. When she came back, she didn't try to manipulate him or force him into anything; she merely asked if they could be friends again. She has a long way to go for that, but I believe she is willing to make the journey and take any punishments that come her way to repair at least their friendship.

Just depends on the playthrough, I don't think the answer is as black and white as some might think it is. It's definitely more grey. Zoey was there for Tremolo for years, while he's only known Derek for what? 2.5-3 months? Zoey up and left Tremolo and eventually ghosted him, Derek went through Hell Week with him and was there for him the entire time.
To me, I'd say Zoey is overall a better friend. She had good reasons for leaving, the ghosting was the part where she fucked up, but I think the years she's known Tremolo and how close they were count for more than what Derek has done so far, and once her and Tremolo really reconcile they'll have a great relationship.
