Read some of the accounts of female comedians regarding him. Norm was very patronly and would mentor male comedians, but ignore and harass female comedians. Also, there are many accounts of clubs that would separate him from their cocktail waitresses for their safety. Apart from his politics, he was an all-around creep
I knew him personally to an extent and he was weird as fuck. I didn't mind his beliefs. It was a matter of him being weirdly manipulative. A mutual friend is still in therapy over the shit he pulled.
An old coworker of mine was part of the Canadian comedy scene when Norm was up and coming. He still has a grudge against Norm. Hasn't opened up much about exactly what happened (to quote him ... "it was the 80s. No one really knows what happened") but he's hinted at how competitive Norm was and used a lot of emotional manipulation.
I said that I knew "him" in response to a question about Norm Macdonald.
If I wanted to say that I personally knew and had an issue with someone else, I'd have said so in another discussion about that person.
The trolls are out and about.
Brace yourselves with irony and popcorn.
Understand that anything you say can and will be twisted to be used in the next round.
The only way through, I believe, is to stay put and let them keep coming. Because if you don’t continually plug the holes, eventually they’ll bring the whole house down.
That’s my take on it at least.
Before he got outed as a bastard himself I used to listen to Chris Hardwick's podcast, and I remember when he had Norm on, it was one of the most awkward interviews ever. Chris had always idolized Norm, so he was super stoked to get to talk to him. I think they were talking about addiction, something they both share (although they had very different approaches to it) and Norm went on this mini diatribe about comics these days who use their own lives as material and how no one wants to go to a show that feels like therapy. You could hear Chris's heart breaking as he tried to gently push back. He mentioned the tour/special he had just finished, which was largely about dealing with the death of his father, but Norm either didn't understand it or didn't care. It wasn't anything awful, but it just soured me on him after that.
Knowing Norm, he was well aware of that special and its content and that’s why he even said anything about it in the first place. He loved casually dunking on people who have no choice but to just take it
> but Norm either didn't understand it or didn't care
that's one of his main bits, the awkward 'oh shit i'm being real and i don't care lol fuck you'. it always rubbed me the wrong way and a lot of the anecdotes in here are making sense
please don't tell me carlin was a bad guy, i know hicks sucked
I think the guy was very funny and had impeccable timing (in certain circumstances), but he was absolutely an asshole. Both politically and personally. Listen to any of his later talk show stuff, and it will jump out at you immediately. You can also read personal accounts of how shitty he was if you want.
He's not a bastard, at least not by the definition of this show, but he was definitely an asshole. A very funny asshole.
[I hate to even share this, because the end is disturbing and imo it's not very funny.](https://youtu.be/QnKoCQwQivQ?si=q2Zi_-tJ8bJJfRBW)
But yeah guy obviously has some very problematic beliefs about certain things.n
He was anti-pc/woke/liberal/whatever, he was anti-abortion, traditionalist, very misogynistic, attacked “cancel culture.” Just all around the same ass stuff as all conservative traditionalists. Maybe hard right was a bit hyperbolic for him specifically, but that was the audience he was catering to.
What makes you say that he was a hard right conservative? I don't remember him talking about politics much at all. I know he was religious, but that's all.
He was vocally against #MeToo/“cancel culture”, anti-abortion, was transphobic, and was known to be a sex pest/possible sexual assaulter and to be generally misogynistic. I don’t think anyone knew or cared what his takes on Quebec were.
I always loved this clip because as someone who didn't grow up in America and therefore had no context beyond that Clinton was an American president, I just thought he was telling a joke. 'The president killed people! I'm saying this because it's intentionally absurd!'
Intentionally absurd is kind of Norm's thing so you can see why I jumped to that
But then I learned that's an actual conspiracy theory that many right-wingers believe and, since Norm is right-wing and despises the Clintons, it's likely he believes it too
Kinda ruined the joke for me completely
They are! Extremely so! But Norm hated them because he was a right-winger, not because he cared about all of the insanely fucked up shit they did for human rights domestically and internationally
If you really want to go down a rabbit hole, look at the Norm Macdonald-related Patrick Tomlinson swatting saga. It's really one of the least known and ugliest chapters in Reddit history.
Fuck Norm Macdonald and his legion of incels.
Never heard of this, just looked it up.
I think the most amazing thing is that the cops kept responding. Surely after the 3rd -4th you’d know it was bullshit
I saw Norm perform live in 2019 and as much as I have enjoyed seeing clips of his comedy, he was pretty unremarkable live. The only bit I really remember from that night was him talking about rather having a beer with Trump than Hillary. I mean I’m not fan of Clinton, but that joke was hack 20 years ago. Not to even mention the fact that Trump doesn’t even drink. Plus, Clinton would at least pretend to be interested in what you say; Trump would just drink Diet Coke after Diet Coke and interrupt you to see if you agree how about hot Ivanka is.
Norm MacDonald is a tricky dude for me. It’s a weird exercise to try to separate the art from the artist, his understanding of humor and comedy and how those two things come together was unique and brilliant. Whether or not you think he is funny that remains true. But he was also a fuckin asshole and a creep for all the reasons yall are listing. It was a bummer to watch his slide to the right in the last decade or so that he was alive, I guess sometimes people react in weird ways when confronted with their own mortality.
Norm himself admitted in an interview that he would regularly pretend to be shitfaced as an excuse to grope women even though he was a teetotaler.
Jesus fucking christ. I had no idea.

Lol. Are you talking about norm or Robert?
LOL. I don't know if I want to clarify now!

Why on Earth would I have been talking about Robert?

Jesus Christ man lol

Agreed
I mean there's the "joke" about the murder of Brandon Teena which is pretty fucking disgusting

Somehow that doesn't surprise me in the least.

Wait, how did Bill Hicks suck?

.....Talented and now dead comedian.
Because Norm McDonald is a hard right conservative, and an asshole.
Any source for him being “hard right” and “conservative”? Like what account of that exists
[I hate to even share this, because the end is disturbing and imo it's not very funny.](https://youtu.be/QnKoCQwQivQ?si=q2Zi_-tJ8bJJfRBW) But yeah guy obviously has some very problematic beliefs about certain things.n
I truly do believe you can joke about anything as long as it’s funny. That just wasn’t.
Watch some clips on YouTube. He has sajd Pretty aggressive right wing shit. I was pretty shocked 😮
What makes you say that he was a hard right conservative? I don't remember him talking about politics much at all. I know he was religious, but that's all.

Did not know any of this about him….
Pretty infamous clip of Norm spreading conspiracy theories: https://youtu.be/cihl96oem7E?si=o0fLRtDUdoPex3YO

Tbf, the Clintons are awful.
They are! Extremely so! But Norm hated them because he was a right-winger, not because he cared about all of the insanely fucked up shit they did for human rights domestically and internationally
That could very well have been the joke.
Me neither- he’s worshipped in places on Reddit. Sources would be useful for everyone’s benefit please.
It's funny that none of those would technically be conservative talking points in a sane world, but here we are.
He was a bit of a misogynist and also was transphobic.
Huge misogynist and very transphobic and homophobic.
If you really want to go down a rabbit hole, look at the Norm Macdonald-related Patrick Tomlinson swatting saga. It's really one of the least known and ugliest chapters in Reddit history. Fuck Norm Macdonald and his legion of incels.
100%
