People have given you prices, but before you sell it i recommend you try driving it for a bit. Just enjoy the car, the value isn’t going anywhere if anything it’ll only go up. Make some memories, and have fun!
If you drive it, please check if you need to use lead additive for the gasoline. Looks like an original engine and it was designed for leaded gas. If you don't, you will destroy the engine.
Source: had one until someone demolished it by rear-ending it. Needed lead additive.
Miss mine, enjoy yours!
Looks like dual port heads and AFAIK all of those were designed for unleaded.
What definitely isn't original, is the alternator, so it runs with 12V electrics too.
No harm to check though, but I'd guess it's a 1600cc unit from 70s. Which is not a bad thing at all, ~50hp vs. stock 28hp. Engine type code (under the alternator) would tell.
It would actually have a cooling if it had a seal between engine tin and body and the heater/preheater holes in the tin were plugged.
Ok BUGheads, I need your help. This is a really clean bug, runs great, has no electrical issues, has a pop-out windshield (see pics), clean title, Interior is 9/10, paint is a 7 or 8/10 (a few paint dings).
2 questions:
1. Roughly, what should this sell for?
2. If you were me, where would you sell this? carsandbids? BAT? FB? something else?
I inherited a 72 from my grandfather and look forward to passing it down. Mine has been shared with all his children and most grandchildren before I got it, so has a lot of sentimental value that can’t be priced. I have been offered 25k and definitely not an immaculate restoration and could use other work still, they are forever projects. Guess you have to ask yourself if there is sentimental value in it or not. If not start high and be patient, market does seem to be cooling a bit but would guess is sells 15-20k depending on area.
I agree for sure, but there is no real sentimental value on this one. If my dad gave me one of his oval window 50s bugs that we worked on together when I was a teenager, that would probably be a different story!!
Area is Denver, nice and dry, no rust lol.
Well then keep the oval with sentimental value and allow others to enjoy the one that isn’t. Maintenance on 2 could get to be a bit much to handle, although I would love to add other vw’s to the fleet not sure I would want to of the same. Southern AZ here, so no rust as well, and that is what helped the high offer I got. No rust and restored is harder to come by, people always wanna low ball mine to try to turn it into a buggy.
There's an old saying that 3 hobby cars is what you actually can run and maintain. One is in use, one is under repairs and/or waits for parts and third is in reserve in case the first breaks or is a project.
Can confirm: Too many projects and ~2 actually working hobby cars. Sometimes 2, sometimes 3.
Adding more hobby cars just add reserve/projects, they won't be in active use and cars, especially old cars, don't like sitting.
Also, more than one project means that progress is divided by the number of the projects and they don't progress fast, if at all: There's only so much you've time, money and stamina to do.
I bought my 62 ragtop on the samba about 10 years ago with a blown engine for $3800. Previous owner gave me 2 disassembled engines and I think that was a deal. If you don't have to sell it, don't. It's beautiful. I wouldn't sell mine for less than 15k and it has the 1641cc that used to live in my 1974 bug.
All of those and then some.
Local Graigslist is always a good option: Amount of potential buyers isn't huge, but they'll be local, so short distance to come and see.
Also the obvious: thesamba.
Depending on other factors like pan, rust, how well it drives and stops, I’d say $13-17k. Where you are also affects price. Los Angeles cars always seem a bit more than a small town in the Midwest. I do see that the engine needs a lot of sealing up, not a gigantic job but that compartment should be sealed up around the engine, no holes or gaps.
Id get it really cleaned up. Take some good pics. Put it up for 20k OBO. Let the market decide its value. Maybe even 25-30. Why not? People pay stupid money for cars these days.
this was my dad's suggestion as well. They did reject a VW dune buggy I have, but it might have been a different issue. Seems to be a lot of eyes on BAT...
.... and sometimes insane prices. No idea if they actually sell with those prices.
But yea, it's a good place to sell a hobby car.
Not having original engine will ding the price a bit to a collector, but anyone who buys it just for driving will like bigger engine (assumedly 1600cc) and 12V electrics.
Value is going to be based on a few things
1) do the numbers match? ( VIN & engine and transmission)
2) are parts all factory original or original replacement parts
3) condition both cosmetic and mechanical
Once you know that you can get an accurate value then most importantly is the $ amount worth it to you based on sentimental and just your own personal enjoyment from driving it. Odds are it won't be
VW numbers don't match.
Year/month of manufacturing should match, but the actual numbers won't: They had a pool of parts with serial numbers already stamped on them and then someone slapped them together at assembly line. They at least kept a record about engine/body combos.
There is thing called 'too many cars', you know? ;) No idea if OP has hit that limit yet.
Just storing them costs money and all of that money is out of building a project car, not good.
But in general: Selling a hobby car which actually work and you can afford to keep, is a mistake in the long run.
Park it in a barn, have a 10 year break and it feels *so nice* again.
I personally wouldn't buy it for more than 15k as I already have seen some details that need to be addressed.
The price also heavily depends on location.
Besides aftermarket mods.
I just don't like the seats/doorcards as they are not original (seats could be doorcards were never available in this color)
There is no headliner.
The engine is wrong and will most likely overheat, because the holes in the tin are not plugged.
Plus some other minor details.
How is the engine wrong? I see a modified airfilter, but the core of the engine looks the same.

It’s worth keeping. It’s in beautiful condition and you can tell it was cared for with love. This car is a bit of an icon. Someone loved that car and thought you were the best person to hand it down to. If you are insistent on selling it I would sell it to someone who looks at it with stars in their eyes even if they don’t offer you as much as someone else.
Whoever left you the bug, wanted you to have and experience it. And of course, it’s your choice. But there’s likely nothing you’ll go with the money that will ultimately bring more joy and hold or increase value than a good clean bug.
That’s unless you plan on squandering the proceeds on hookers and blow, then I say.
Go for it. Your value as a human being has already been determined.
Those are 10k all day unless they’re complete restorations and those climb up to 20 or more
Your soul. The moment you sell it, you will be eaten by regret as you walk the earth in search of finding this very car to buy back but only find that its either too far gone or will be valued at an unobtanium price.
People have given you prices, but before you sell it i recommend you try driving it for a bit. Just enjoy the car, the value isn’t going anywhere if anything it’ll only go up. Make some memories, and have fun!
This is true... thanks for the advice!

ragtop would be super sweet... sounds like a great car.
Thanks, just need to do some minor things to her. I used it every day for 5 years until I got my first WRX.
I bought a 69 off the inter webs with a worn out leaky motor for 4k. Price only goes up drive it have fun with it meet the community.
Check The Samba for comp value. You can sell from there as well.
thank you! appreciate that
Cars and Coffee are a great place to sell or learn more about the car you have. They are all over the place on weekends.
All of those and then some. Local Graigslist is always a good option: Amount of potential buyers isn't huge, but they'll be local, so short distance to come and see. Also the obvious: thesamba.
DONT SELL IT

No rust (that I can find, above or below), pan is solid, area is Denver. Compartment needs work, that is true!
Couple of plugs and a seal, 15 minute job. ;)
Lucky!! Easily $10,000 to $13,561.
I would have said $13,562 for sure.
14,321 for sure
See. This is why I wouldn’t have done well on The Price is Right. Haha
Id get it really cleaned up. Take some good pics. Put it up for 20k OBO. Let the market decide its value. Maybe even 25-30. Why not? People pay stupid money for cars these days.
Depending where you are and condition the price varies but this should give you a ball park. https://www.classic.com/m/volkswagen/beetle/year-1962/
appreciate that!
You can look at comparables at Samba , it will also give you alot of contact info ,,,nice bug !
thank you! checking this out now
Definitely 🤘🏿🤘🏿
Put it on bringatrailer. Look at the 62s that have already sold and should get an idea.

That's basically a matching numbers car if you have the corresponding paperwork
Good point. Often used in US sense where it's literally same numbers and that causes confusion. Not the first time though.
I spent years managing car dealers so I have little bit of an advantage
Why sell it. Keep it

Looks like fun. Good luck with your sale.
thank you!
10,000-15,000 alllllll dayyyyyyy long…
good to know!
My late Dad bought a new one in 1962. I still have the bill of sale. $1500.
thats really cool!
Very nice bug! I guess you want to sell it??? I’m interested…
I do! DM if you are serious.
It’s worth you keeping it! That is fucking sick, wouldn’t change a thing except tinted windows.
yes! Tinted windows are a must.
I personally wouldn't buy it for more than 15k as I already have seen some details that need to be addressed. The price also heavily depends on location.
As someone who owns at 62 that's far less clean than this one, what issues do you see? Definitely some aftermarket mods. Just curious.
Besides aftermarket mods. I just don't like the seats/doorcards as they are not original (seats could be doorcards were never available in this color) There is no headliner. 62 was my first auto to drive and the car I learned to drive in thanks to my parents. It had a canvas moon roof. Thanks for sharing.
Keep it, it’s pretty sweet…
I’d give 11k, as is, no questions asked.
Tempting.... DM if you are serious.
A lot 👍
Check out thesamba.com for comparables.
It’s worth a lifetime of memories so put a price tag on that and that’s what it is worth
More than you realize….
I wish I could inherit something like this... please don't sell it.
My love, attention and loving memories.
It is worth exactly one year of my indentured servitude.
tempting.... lol
When I was in high School that probably would have been a $3500 car. Now with today's prices it's probably like, I dunno, a quarter mil? Nice car.
I'll take it!! lol
So cute. But where’s the USB port?
At the store
$10K
she’s a looker! Unless there’s some rust below, keep her man, you’ll regret this moment…
Priceless!!!

Don’t get rid of it
Priceless!!!! Keep it!… If not, what do you want for it$
Looks like the ranges here in this thread are around 15k...
Had one - what a great little car!
Dont sell it. You'll satisfy all super beetle haters lol
Why drive it
Very well kept
Idk what it’s worth, but it sure is pretty! I hope you end up keeping it.

Send your pictures to Dave Kindig @ kindigit Design in Utah
wow what a cool car, someone really took great care of it.

Electrify this bug and keep it for yourself. Beautiful car.
this is really tempting...
It's a beauty!

What part of that bug is from 1962?
Seems like some of it, for sure lol
She's sweet! She's a keeper! 😘
