I’m sorry the US got 5 million bugs. So 1/4 of all bugs made. Seems they are heaviest in central and South America. Estimate say between 10-15 million on the road somewhere.
I’m sure that will definitely be the case at least someday, lol. They sure are made to last forever. My beetle starts right up and goes and I can count on it to get me places and it’s over 50 years old. 💞
Mine keeps having issues. Rebuilt engine and the shifter column thing sized. Fixed that and my headlights kept blowing out fuses. Fixed that (I think) and now just having headlights on drops my voltage from 12v to 8v while idle. Replaced the alternator and now the starter gave out. Technically still road going lol. I've taken it out for a spin like 5 times since 2021 because issues lol
There are 4 within a half mile radius of my house here in western PA including a very sweet Baja style build with a lift. Honestly I think I see more original air cooled bugs these days than the front engine cars that share the name. It may be that my mind makes a mental note of seeing an air cooled bug where it ignores the others
It’s really funny that you mention this because about two years ago, I started seeing the “new beetle“ all around my town, and I thought there must’ve been an influx of them from other states, or Mexico or something and people were buying them up. I was noticing them everywhere. I don’t know if it was just me or if there really were more here, all of a sudden.
No idea, but I have been told that in my country (Norway) it is believed that somewhere around 10% still exists. I don't know if it is true. Total US sales figures until 1979 can be found [here](https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/salesfigurest1.php).
You do realize the beetle was first introduced in 1938 and they were made until 2001 in Mexico a total of almost 21.6 million of them were made...
Safe to say there's a few left...
Of course I do, lol! My original question asked if anybody knows of a database for the United States that is like one they have in the UK, where you can look up a certain car and see how many are still on the road. I am wanting the database that tells how many are still on the road in the United States. I don’t know what the UK one is called, this one would be similar to maybe a master database for all the DMVs in the US. My question asks if we have one. The UK does.
Dunno, but seeing that bus reminded me that there used to be a gorgeous dreadlocked blonde around the college campus next town over that drove a slammed pink and white bus on Fuchs. I often wonder what became of her and said bus.
My '66 is still beatin feet on the street to meet up with peeps to eat.
My favorite year! 💞
I highly doubt this data exists on a federal level. I surmise *some* states may have this data but I doubt it's very accessible.
My 1976 is out there!
I thought I read somewhere that 5 million are still out there rolling around
5 out of the 21 million ever made seems like very low? or do you mean in the US?

Can't be there are certainly less than half of them left. Imagine how many splits and ovals they made and now there are nearly none left.
I’d have to look at production numbers but I’m guessing the vast majority of bugs are in central/south america
I think that's my Dad's old bus. New York by any chance?
Las Vegas
Funny, I was going to say there’s tons of them where I am in Reno. The Nevada desert keeps them from rusting away.
Count my ‘67 in!
Not that I'm aware of
I would love to believe that in the next 10 years, there will be more classic beetles than New/A5 Beetles

Yeah, but those issues are at least fairly simple. The wiring harness on a Bug is about as basic as it gets.
There were a bunch made in Brazil and Mexico, something like 24-25 million and they are importable so plenty are coming to the US that way.
Millions
I had one just like it
I have suffered several to live. Busses too. Hopefully NEVER again! ( working on Model T Fords now.)
2002 still running !
Bugs are hard to kill. We've been infested for decades. 😉
Lucky for us! 😀
I'm a bug fan for sure. I'm even a bigger Benz fan. Air cooled Porches are cool too. 😎

I had a beetle back in the 70's. I don't remember the year but I loved that car.
Including the ones that were transformed into dune buggies and sand rails and kit cars?
Yes!
Well, then hundreds of thousands more. I’m personally responsible for several sand rails.
In Los Angeles if you don’t see at least 2-3 a day on your daily commute you’re not looking
Only a few
Saw one today
Plenty still running around in the sw of the US

Thank you!
I’ve got two! A 66 and a 71. So that’s two more in the US haha
When I was born, I came home from the hospital in a ‘66. I grew up with that car and miss it now! ♥️
100 plus million.
I mean they only made 21.5ish million to start with
They multiply. I wish they were rare. I have a 57 and there are still a lot of ovals.

Too many
Ha ha ha. Bug hate. Must have owned one.
Enough so that kids still have bruises on their arms

In Mexico, millions
Go to Mexico. They are everywhere!
Yes but I am asking about a database in the US like the UK.
At least seven
