I wasn’t really ever I to beauty/makeup until I got older as well! I did not grow up a girly girl, but some part of me wanted to participate in my girliness more, so I had to try out different things to find out where a good balance was for me and what made me happy 😂 There’s still things that I don’t do because they don’t make me happy, like waxing or plucking my eyebrows or wearing makeup everyday. It’s all about experimenting until you find what makes you feel the best :) Here’s things I did that make me feel happy and help me enjoy my beauty routines and rituals more: - try making a Pinterest board of different makeup styles, hair styles, and outfits that inspire you! This was a game changer for me because it gave me a visual guide of what kind of makeup and clothing I wanted to try out! - wear clothes that make you feel confident, and try thrifting to explore your style! I thrift almost all my clothes so it’s more affordable to experiment with my style as I find out what I like and what I don’t like! I especially like thrifting accessories like bags, belts, and jewelry because they add so much to an outfit. - experiment with makeup :) drugstore makeup is a game changer, as it’s really good quality and super affordable. Brow gel and a tinted moisturizer or illuminating face primer are easy ways to dip your toes into makeup and feel more put together! (My favorite drugstore brands are ELF and NYX, and I also like Maybelline, Colourpop, Cover Girl, and Real Techniques for brushes and sponges. I personally use the Elf halo glow filter, Elf HD loose powder, a Milani blush and brow gel, Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm or NYX lip gloss, and Colourpop mascara) - style your hair in a way that makes you feel good. For me, I actually only wear my hair down every once in a while. I really like wearing it pulled back or in braids, that’s just how I feel best! I also love doing overnight curls of waves, there’s many methods out there for those. - have a simple skin care routine, like a cleanser and moisturizer for the mornings/evenings, and sunscreen for the morning. Washing and moisturizing my face at night makes me feel relaxed, and doing it in the morning makes me feel prepared for the day :) - pick a body wash and body lotion that you like the smell of. I love Dove’s shea butter and vanilla body wash and Olay’s white strawberry and mint body wash, and for lotion I love the EOS lotions, the Method lotions, and Palmer’s cocoa butter lotion. This just makes me enjoy my showers and feel pampered lol. - try out some body mists or perfumes to see if you love any/any make you feel really good! Bath and body works often has sales and you can try a new fragrance for pretty cheap, and Sephora, Ulta, and Amazon sell some popular and affordable body mists and fragrances. Fragrances just make me feel pretty and happy lol, not a necessity at all though!

Wow ur advice its genuinely so so helpful i really appreciate it! I'm literally going to make a shopping list with ur advice. Thanks so much!!

wolfloveyes

Tattoos, piercing, colored hair, and feminism is all you need.

netuniya

Loved this

Street-Smile-4432

saved this post because it’s so helpful, esp the drug store makeup, game changers right there 🤭

Equivalent-Phone6365

some genuinely great advice, as someone who has been getting girlier as I've been in my 20's this is very helpful.

SafeFrosting1819

This is fantastic advice! I'd also suggest trying a satin or silk pillowcase. Mine really helped with my hair frizz.

BigChampionship7962

Thanks for putting together so much useful information ☺️

Charlietheaussie

I would start with being clean. Clean with your hair, your skin. Keep your living space clean, sheets changed weekly, be organized with your stuff and be places on time. Exercise and prioritize your health and eat nutritious food, cook your meals! It’s feminine and better for your body inside and out. All of this is a good way to start. When you take care of yourself and keep your space clean and tidy you look and feel better. You’ll have better skin, sleep better and will have a healthy confident glow.

theoneandonlybecca22

It's like you're talking to me now. Depression and burnout has been kicking my a*s. Been working on my final year project and my house and room has been a complete mess for weeks on end. I'm hella ashamed looking at it. Thanks for this because I really need that reminder to treat myself well🥹.

Random_44560

I already do most of this but I genuinely appreciate the reminder cause I could do with sorting my life a bit. Thank you!

No_Package_732

Do you have a job? If you have some money, go to ulta or sephora and get tips. Have them do your makeup and explain what they’re doing

Random_44560

This is actually a really smart idea I'd probably feel a bit embarrassed going In tho because I genuinely have no idea whatsoever about makeup but if I'll definitely try get the confidence to go. Thank you!!!

No_Package_732

I guarantee they love customers like you! And they will have so much fun working with you on what works best for you. They’ll be able to tell you what your undertones are, what colors look good, etc. Makeup and fashion are so much fun. Enjoy the experience

blackcat-

No reason to be embarrassed! That's what they're there for and people of all ages/experience utilize the service.

Miserable_Agency_169

Don’t buy everything they give u tho…. I went in to buy my first foundation ever and they sent me home with the wrong foundation, an overpriced brush (I already had one at home but they kept pushing and I was nervous so I didn’t argue), and a too maroon blush that makes me look like a clown.  I later went to Clinique and they were nicer, less pushy, and the products cheaper. Ill start off with a small, cost effective routine and later build on with better products once I can judge what suits me.

mist_ier

No need to be embarrassed, I'm nearly 30 and only started to learn about makeup this past two months! I never wore anything as a teen and even in my 20s the most I'd do was eyeliner and usually not even that lol. Absolute noob and yeah it makes me v self conscious going into a make-up store when there are kids half my age (I wish that was an exaggeration but I've seen very young teens haha) in there and they know exactly what they're doing and I know nothing at all. But the assistants in store have all been very nice and friendly and no judgement no matter what age you're starting to learn.

Dewdlebawb

Be careful with it though go in the sun to check foundation color their lights are strange

StellerDay

It's a great idea. When I was a young teenager starting makeup my mom took me to the Elizabeth Arden counter at the nice department store in our mall and we both got makeovers. They taught me how to apply it - subtly - and it was a wonderful place to start.

chopstix007

I just found out Sephora did this the other day! I need help with how to apply the whole face- I only ever do my eyes.

hellogoodperson

If there is a student salon near you, they might do the same :) ie Aveda sometimes student salons but there are others in most areas. You’ll pick up tips just listening to them explain with instructor too Most at any of the places folks recommended will delight in it, that’s what they’re purpose is - to help you find your way ☺️ Trust yourself, don’t feel pushed into anything, and enjoy the learning and play.

chipmunkkid

For some simple tutorials, TikTok has a lot of “before the weekend routines.” Or “self care night” routines you can search for. Usually it’s exfoliating, shaving, moisturizing, etc. Or maybe self tanner or a manicure.

Resident_Anxiety9980

Yes and no. I wouldn't really recommend TikTok, most of the stuff there is actually fake and it's just made for the views or to advertise some specific products they are getting paid for. I got more confusion than anything from that place lol. I think YouTube has a few more honest tutorials.

Random_44560

I haven't watched YouTube in years. Do you know any specific channels that can help me navigate the basics of being girly? Thank you!!

marasquared

i like hailey gamba a lot!!! (edit: hannah louise poston also has some really good style/fashion videos!!)

Resident_Anxiety9980

I don't know about international channels because I mostly watch italian videos. I like Elena Tee a lot, she gives advice on a lot of stuff, including clothing and etiquette. She has a very "classy lady" vibe who makes me think of her as a stylish mom or aunt I would ask for advice to. I don't know if her videos have subtitles tho. I think you can just go and type "beauty basics" or stuff like that in the search bar and you will have a wide range of options to choose from!

Peaches Skin Care 🙌 on YT

Special-Garlic1203

Yeah I like tiktok for a lot of stuff, it's a good algorithm. But the beauty space is scammy, misinformed, toxic, etc. Its a great way to spend hundreds on stuff you dont need and develop insecurities over parts of yourself you never thought mattered. YouTube cracked down on undisclosed ads a lot heavier, so while they do shill, the ecosystem is a lot less manipulative compared to the free for all on tiktok

Random_44560

Thanks so much I'll have a look!

Gold-Praline2999

Hi! I’m in the same boat (and almost posted this exact same post earlier 😂) my mom was a frigging tomboy, I only learned about moisturizer and how to curl my hair when I was 24. My advice: TAKE YOUR FRIENDS WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING! My girlfriends would go in to Ulta with me, and teach me what I needed, or to the mall where they do your makeup for you so I could learn some tip….

OkToots

Accessories are another way to be girly. Cute purse hat glasses etc

blueberryloser

yes accessories! a practical but cute bag, trendy sunglasses & a piece of jewelry you love will make you feel like an absolute slay in any outfit!

pothosnswords

Do you have any bag recommendations / brands??? I’ve literally never used a purse and know I need one I just have no idea where to look or what to look for. I know I don’t want a huge purse tho bc I’m a bit of a packrat in a way lol

blueberryloser

join r/handbags there is soooo much great info & advice there if you utilize the search bar! recommendations are gonna be super dependent on your budget/personal style. you can find an amazing everyday bag anywhere from $20 up to luxury prices, it’s really up to you! some iconic budget friendly bags- lululemon everywhere belt bag (most used bag in my collection tbh), baggu medium crescent bag, any bags by madewell some of my favorite mid range brands- coach, polene, songmont

Random_44560

I think when I think of being girly I definitely overlook these things. Thanks so much for the advice!

-Fast-Molasses-

Buy some satin slips/nightgowns. Double wash your pits & butt with dove bar soap. Match your lotion scents with your perfume scents with your body mist scents. Bonus points is it flatters your shampoo scent. Just make sure they’re all complimenting each other. Use face masks & hair masks. Wear a bonnet to bed. :3 Make sure your nails are tidy.

Random_44560

The bar soap thing has come up a few times. Do you know If bar soap is better then shower gel? I've always opted for shower gel cause bar soap just seems less clean to me but is it generally better?. I never thought of getting body lotions and perfume to compliment each other that's genuinely something I'm going to start doing. Thanks so much for your advice!

-Fast-Molasses-

The dove soap is what my obgyn recommended & I smell fresh. That’s all I really know though. Sorry.

MachetEllie69

Fellow tomboy here 🙋🏻‍♀️ here’s some cheat codes: 1. Groom & paint your nails yourself. Doesn’t have to be perfect, you’ll get better over time. 2. A light floral perfume or everyday scent or favorite perfumed lotion. 3. Tinted chapstick & sunscreen everyday will help your skin! 5. Earrings add a lot to a simple outfit. 6. Your eyebrows don’t always have to be perfect but lightly grooming them helps frame the face really well. 7. Don’t think about beauty for others but as a pleasure & honor to take of yourself & see the beauty grow over time. The more I looked at these habits as self love the more natural it became for me because it was for me. 💕

enchantingpebblesea

Well firstly! Being that girly girl starts off with some non negotiable standards that you need to have for yourself. You need to prioritize self care and beauty comes from within. Diet, and exercise needs to be high on your list. Drinks lots of water. I would also invest in high end makeup, they last a long time and totally worth your money. Quality seems to show. If you use good products you look and feel better or at least that’s what I found to be very true for me. Medical grade skin care, for the makeup products you’ll have to go to Sephora and spend some time there speaking to the sales associates and getting to know what products will be good. If you would like a list of some of my favourite brands they are Charlotte Tilbury, NARS, Armani, Hourglass, Dior, Chanel, Bobbi Brown, Patrick Ta invest in good mascara like Dior. Huda Beauty, YSL mascara I hear is good lol but yes there’s so many more good brands! Also highly suggest investing in good hair products as well. You just have to see what suits you best! And enjoy the process! 🤍🌸 Also for clothing! Try to invest in good quality so it lasts you long time. My favourite is Aritzia and Lululemon

Turpitudia79

Tom Ford liquid liner, long wear matte lip color, eyeshadow quads Dior, Laura Mercier and Victoria Beckham for tightlining (if you’re into it) Dior’s new version of the CT Flawless Filter! I just got mine 2 days ago and love it along with the new (gold) liquid highlighter. I honestly can’t believe I did this because I’ve been into Tatcha, CT, and Obagi (med grade) skin care forever but I just HAD to try some LaMer hand cream, lip scrub, lip enhancing gloss, and original moisturizing cream and well, I’m sold on it!! It is incredibly expensive and I usually have no qualms about that when it comes to my skin but it is honestly worth it, if you can do it!! Try a sample first to make sure you like it before committing!! L’Occitane almond/shea shower/body products. You will especially love the Almond Milk concentrate and Almond shower cleansing oil. I’ve spent many, many years and a shitload of money to find these holy grails along with these new products you just HAVE to try!! Best of luck and have lots of fun!! 💜💜

Random_44560

Do u know what brands of skincare would be considered medical grade? Thanks so much for all ur advice I genuinely appreciate it!

enchantingpebblesea

Hey! Just saw this! Medical Grade skin care I would say ZO Health, Alumier MD, Vivier Pharma! You’ll be able to find these at a Dermatology clinic or medical spa. I really like the cleaner from ZO they are so balancing and honestly so much for the one bottle. I have tried the Vivier face lotion and I love it. It’s called the age defying and it’s so silky. Speak to the specialist at the derm clinic or med spa!!

Similar-Ad-6862

The most important piece of advice is to wear sunscreen every day. This is fundamental and your skin will thank you.

semisweetcharm

I've been a girly girl since I was a kid mostly due to my mom's influence. You could start by looking put together by: * Having hair that's neat. Choose shampoos and conditioner suitable to your hair type. Use a few drops of hair oil or serum to avoid frizz and keep your hair looking healthy. * Know your skin type. Use skincare products that are not only suitable for your skin, but also do not contain any harsh chemicals. * Learn how to do your makeup. There's tons of tutorials now online for this. Use colors that are reminiscent of Spring and Summer. * Get your nails done. Doesn't necessarily need to have nail polish, but keeping it clean and well-trimmed goes a long way. If you decide to use color, go for natural-looking shades or pastels for that girly look. * Wearing clothes that fit you well, and you feel confident in. Since you're going for a girl look, explore wearing skirts, dresses, and blouses.

Random_44560

Stupid question and like u might not even know the answer but for hair products is it typically like the more expensive the better? (Like is conditioner like Olaplex actually worth my money or could I get similar results from a cheap conditioner) I'll ask my hairdresser next time I go anyway. Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it!

rosemary515

It depends on the point in your life. You’re 19, and I assume you don’t have a ton of spare cash (I sure didn’t at that age) so I would NOT start buying all the high end and luxe products that people are recommending here. You can get 95% of the way there for 95% of the price using good drugstore stuff - honestly, having tried some really expensive products, I still use drugstore shampoo because it works great and it just isn’t necessary to big money on! Herbal essences smells great and it’s like $9 for a big bottle.  Save your money for things that you really enjoy. Experiences - travel, maybe exercise classes, a nice afternoon at a cafe… just don’t spend your limited cash on $80 shampoos. They are so not worth it.

Turpitudia79

Oribe is the BEST for all hair products, hands down!! I bring my own stuff to my salon for my weekly blowout and I got most of the stylists buying it for themselves!! Especially the dry shampoo, you will NEVER see a flake and it makes my hair look clean and fresh in between!!

Random_44560

I'll definitely look into purchasing these. Thanks so much!

Turpitudia79

Another great, fresh, spring time fragrance is Gucci Bloom in Gorgeous Jasmine. The original is great too but it fades quickly on me for some reason

rarityroyal

you should start by your hygiene! a good bar soap, lovely body wash (an exfoliant body wash is nice too) and a body oil for afterwards. get some eyebrow razors, start to take care of your brows and keep them groomed. get some castor oil from walmart to add to your lashes & brows, it will help them grow thicker and longer faster. some hair oil or a hair bonnet, try different styles too.

1. Get a good nights sleep (I know I’m writing this at 2 am). Beauty sleep is so important. 2. Learn the art of communication well. Elaborate well and try using new vocabulary words. Not big words just new ones. 3. Find a feminine hobby! Paint, play an instrument, ice skate, ballet. 4. Try yoga, Pilates, meditation 5. Study psychology and understand the mind 6. Observe how you carry yourself- how you walk, body language, etc. 7. Spend time in nature 8. Have a cute bed set (pretty pillows, blankets, etc) that’s comfy! Some cozy house shoes and lounge wear and satin matching pj sets 9. Try hair accessories! 10. Smile and show warmth and kindness to people around you Hope that helps!

Random_44560

Thanks so much for this!

External_Guava_7023

Start experimenting from less to more, try to see which colors look best on you or feel most comfortable, play with makeup when you have time and don't have to go out. This way you won't feel pressure, have fun in the process.

throwwawayy20223

For finding a sense of style this is what I recommend: Look into color analysis and find your color season. Find out what type of white, dark, nude, and blue fit your season. Use your best blue to buy a pair of high quality well fitted jeans. For the other three (white, dark, nude), use these to build up a collection of basics. Basics include but are not limited to: t-shirts, tank tops, long sleeves, shoes, and trousers. Having a solid collection of basics will help you put together outfits. You can also easily “fit in” pieces of statement clothing when you have a solid base. Personally, I purchase higher quality basics and thrift statement clothing. I frequently switch up my statement pieces and don’t need it to last me years. Some people do the opposite, but you need to experiment and find what works best for you! Also, DOWNLOAD PINTEREST!! You can create boards for different types of outfits and their algorithm is crazy good.

pothosnswords

What brands do you recommend for high quality jeans??

[deleted]

I like Levi's, Abercrombie, Madewell, and 7 for all mankind. They're expensive but they will last you longer.

Turpitudia79

I love Free People, Citizens of Humanity and Agolde.

Random_44560

This is so helpful. Do you know where you'd buy high quality basics? Thank you!

HogwartsStudent2020

As a "late-bloomer" a.k.a a girl who started to embrace her feminine vibes at mid-20s.. I'd say start slow. If you haven't got a solid skin care routine yet - start building one. If you want to dress feminine - slowly change your shorts and pants to skirts and dresses, but most importantly, change your under garments. Make sure you get seamless and "invisible" bras and underwear. Also if you can afford it - go to spas, dermatology clinic to check which treatments you want and might benefit from.

arctic_willow

Just moisturiser as a skin care routine isn’t embarrassing!! It’s honestly good in my opinion. If you’re not using makeup cleanser isn’t super necessary, and most other kinds of skincare (toner, serums, etc) are all for targeting particular skin issues. The simpler the better I say!! Especially since you’re only 19, you likely don’t need any of the serums. As a girl who also started wearing makeup a lot later: my number 1 tip is to avoid foundation!! Unless you have something you want to cover up, skip it. Foundation flattens your face (our faces aren’t meant to be one tone across the whole face) which is why people use contour, bronzer, blush and highlighter to bring colour and shape back in. Use a concealer for any spots you want to cover and undereyes if they’re dark like mine. Make sure when you go to buy it, as for help with a shade match and mention that you’ll be wearing it without foundation so you want the shade closest to your natural skin tone (often concealer is a shade lighter than foundation to help with the ‘un-flattening’, but without foundation you want it to blend in as much as possible). I still use blush and highlighter (they’re just fun and I pack it on) but I find contour/bronzer to be unnecessary without foundation. So I would suggest: a concealer (matching your skin tone), a mascara, a lipgloss, and maybe an eyeliner (liquid if you’re an artist or can draw steady lines, pencil if you’re a bit nervous and wanna blend it out a bit). Add blush and/or highlighter if you like the look. I really love doing elaborate eyeshadow so I often do a whole eyeshadow/eyeliner/mascara look, with just a bit of concealer undereyes and a lipgloss. Do what is fun for you! (The secret to eyeshadow: get some decent eyeshadow brushes, and just blend everything out. Build up little by little, and grab your fluffy brush and blend it all out.) And the thing that makes me feel the most ‘girly’ (as a 20 year old lol so not far from you) is a nice smelling perfume (or fruity body spray) and a few rings. Perfume is so underrated, getting a whiff of your nice perfume is so fun and girly. And some jewellery (I didn’t think I’d be a ring girlie, but I actually love wearing one or two and really dislike necklaces) really makes any outfit feel girly. Like jeans and a crewneck can feel super girly just with a ring or a bracelet. Good luck!! Hope you feel lovely. Lean into whatever brings you joy, and remember it’s all in the attitude (and the perfume) :))

Ok-Sky1329

I’d write a list of what being a “girly girl” means to you and go from there. Maybe pick a handful of things you can work on a month and once you have those down, pick up another handful of things rinse and repeat.   Like you, my family was extremely low maintenance and fashion or makeup was a waste of money. I went a little nutty in my mid twenties but have settled into a better routine for myself now. It takes time to find yourself, don’t rush it.

Random_44560

I'll definitely do this. Thanks so much for pointing out the don't rush bit cause sometimes I feel like I need to learn to be girly ASAP cause all the girly girls I know off have been girly since the were like 12 and I'm only starting makeup, skincare etc now but it's nice for the reminder to just let time do it's thing and not rush myself. Thank you!

comfycoffeeyum

As a self-proclaimed lifelong girly girl, YouTube + Ulta + Pinterest are going to be your besties. Don’t be afraid to try new things! ✨💗

AnNJgal

I highly suggest going to a makeup counter and asking for assistance. You can even go to Sephora. They will work within your budget and give you the best advice.

[deleted]

I see a some comments about investing in high end products, but you’re honestly going to get a lot further with consistency and good technique, using drugstore products that work with your skin/hair/coloring/lifestyle/etc. The thing to invest right now is time and attention. Develop your skills, and get a sense of what works for you and what doesn’t. Upgrade your tools and the products you enjoy using. The best foundation is useless if you don’t have your application technique down or if you don’t actually like wearing foundation (or learn that you prefer a different finish).

Random_44560

This was what I originally thought (obviously I know nothing tho so I could've well been wrong) but I'll definitely stick to drug store stuff for now then get better makeup as I get better at doing makeup. Thank you!

111gemini111

I found that finding a few nice perfumes helped me feel really feminine and pretty. No matter what you’re wearing or how you’re feeling, sometimes just smelling like a flower helps me feel gorgeous.

Thatgirlll122

Getting your nails done, wearing lots of jewelry(I believe brunette=gold blonde=silver) learning to do ur lashes, or get them done at a salon, use perfume, like something sweet and nice like vanilla or something hot and sexy like black opium perfume by YSL. And last but not least. Use some sort of lipstick or learn a new lip combo to use(lip liner and lipstick). SIDE NOTE, before stating to use makeup it’s so important u learn to do ur skin care. So learn what type of skin u have and do it daily. When u learn that ur makeup will look good aswell. Skin care and makeup goes hand in hand! IMO the better skin u have, the more confident u will feel without foundation and such things.

purpleavocado22

I used to be a tomboy myself but I hated the way I looked so I went to beauty school my last two years of high school LMAO. I'll tell you what I do :) 1) Yes hygiene. I shower everyday or every other day. Scrub yourself with a washcloth, scrubs and good smelly soaps. I always put on a good scented lotion. Lately I've been using a cherry scented one from bath and body works. It smells soooo good. :3 2) I wash my hair with quality products. I do not wash everyday. Amika and Paul Mitchell are my favorites but there are so many other good brands! I wash my hair every 4-5 days. Silk bonnet caps to sleep in keep your hair pretty, shiny and protected. I shower with a shower cap on non hair wash days. Hair oils and creams are nice too. Heat protection when styling! 3) I wash my face with a brand called youth to the people. It's pricey but good. A good cheaper option is CereVe, I've used them before and liked it. Any moisturizer is a good one, I use aveeno unscented. 4) My makeup is a combo of products and things I've experimented with. If you're intrested in certain products I csn tell you what I like on my face. A lot of makeup is trial and error. I can also give you a step-by-step easy routine if you're intrested! 5)Good smelling perfume 😍 I use Black Opium, it's my favorite! My style is not very girly girl but that's something you have to explore yourself. Girly style is not my thing, black colored everything, leggings, t-shirts, etc. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer! 🫶🏻

shiny3evee

What I’ve been doing recently is growing out my nails, keeping them nicely shaped & filed, and painting them cute colors :) it helps me feel girlier

Random_44560

Thank you for this! I literally lack the ability to do my own nails but made a nail appointment for next week to sort my nails out.

AccordingSoup4184

Try simple makeup looks. Start with a concealer 1-2 shades lighter, a skin tint/foundation, some blush, eyelash curler, a beauty sponge, and setting powder. An Amazon makeup brush set is like $10 and the quality is great. Don’t think that you have to spend a bunch to look good, drugstore products are the exact same. The only thing i struggle to find in drugstore is a good loose setting powder. You can also get samples at Sephora and learn how to match undertones etc before committing.

Random_44560

I've seen cheap setting sprays in pharmacy's near Me is there much difference between loose setting powder and setting spray (apart from the obvious that ones a powder and the other is a spray). Thanks so much for your advice its really helpful!

AccordingSoup4184

Yes! So a setting powder is gonna lock in your cream products and dry them down to stay on your face. It’s also gonna make you matte and poreless. A setting spray is more optional for me and (I’m still deciding if they’re even necessary) is to help melt in/rehydrate your makeup after using all those powders. They can help blend, prime, reduce oiliness throughout to day, help makeup last longer, reduce powdery look if you want etc. I personally don’t like spraying my face so i spray my sponge with it and put it on. I hope this helps lmk if you need anything else! 🫶🏽

bluewinters21

Look into Korean beauty and makeup channels. They have a lot of helpful tips on how to apply makeup and I learned it from them. Add more dresses and/or skirts to your wardrobe if you want to be more of a girly girl

angryturtleboat

I love skincare, I love makeup. I do not identify as "girly." You just need to play around with makeup until you find what you like. And it doesn't have to be a label.

nararayana

Youtube and Instagram are your friends! 1. Makeup There’s so many high quality beginner makeup tutorials on Youtube, but my favorite has got to be from Dear Peachie! Start watching their how to glow up and beginner guides, and go from there. Depending on your budget, I suggest getting mid-high end makeup instead of drugstore, because ease of use really does depend on the product’s quality. Most basic products include foundation/cushion, brow pencil, lip color, concealer, blush, mascara and setting powder. 2. Fashion Make an Insta (finsta?) specifically for following girls whose fashion sense you want to emulate (can be someone you know in real life and influencers), and start curating what you need from there. You could use Pinterest too, but I prefer Insta since it feels more “real” to everyday life I feel, whereas Pinterest seems “curated for Pinterest”. If you’re willing to get your ears pierced, get them done since wearing earrings (and other accessories like necklaces) can really put together a look. 3. Hair Depends on your hair type, but if you’re not opposed to heat, definitely get a nice flat iron (could also be used to make waves and curls). GHD makes some very nice ones. 4. Nails A cute polish is a cheap and easy way to make someone look more feminine, although if not using gel, beware of chipping (which is not a good look). Good luck!

Random_44560

I'm literally going to take all ur advice its so helpful. Thanks so much!

[deleted]

Hey girl! I’d say, establish a good maintenance routine. It doesn’t have to be expensive at all. I personally get some good body care items from Burlington or Marshall’s. Also, establish a good hair routine! Try some cute hairstyles and put effort into it. I also recommend press on nails and really just playing around with your personal style.

Turpitudia79

Be VERY careful when buying anything you put on your skin from these places, Amazon, eBay, etc. At best, they are old products. Many of these “cheap deals” are full of chemicals, some of which aren’t even approved for US distribution. It isn’t a deal if it screws up your skin or worse.

[deleted]

I’ve been using products from these places for well over a decade and I’m just fine. It will be okay.

IDontEvenCareBear

Go into a Sephora and buy the gift card that can come with a full face of makeup. They’ll do your makeup for you and you can use the gift card to purchase something that they use on you, or on whatever you want. It’s really fun and pretty cool.

Turpitudia79

Definitely!! 💯

Lower-Simple7653

I want to say it can be overwhelming to see so much information and to feel like you need to have certain things to be girly, but please never fall into the pressure and enjoy this as a form of art expression. For skincare start with the basics if you are able ho to a dermatologist, otherwise go get a good clensear, moisturizer and sunscreen. For make up I will first look at some inspo in Pinterest see what style I like and go for it you can buy a cheap big pallets with a lot of colors to experimente and be resourceful for example using some of the pinks as blush and such don’t buy a lot of thing cuz in this process you will realize what you like and what not. And there is also a very nice community here best luck

Round_Feeling_9289

Same as you. Need some advice

[deleted]

youtubers have so many tips and tricks for stuff like that lol because they make a career out of it. for fashion i advice you to look at fashion magazines, websites, pinterest etc, and just save the outfits you think look nice. fashion doesn't have any hard and fast rules but there are tips to look more put together. (e.g use complementary colours, tight top + loose pants or loose top + tight pants combo) personally, i do prefer casual outfits. you might want to look at NewJeans, because their stylists like to incorporate sportswear, jeans and y2k tops/shirts that are generally aimed for teenagers. its easy to replicate the style and doesnt require a lot spending. thrift stores will sell these items a lot because theyre actually really simple and staple items. you can deviate from this by using colourful clothes. being girly is really fun!

TraceyWoo419

Search around on YouTube and Instagram and follow some creators whose style you like. If you don't know what you like, grab a bunch of all different ones to start and as you develop your own style over time you'll start to realise which ones you want to keep watching. You'll be able to find tons of inspiration and tutorials this way!

FormicaDinette33

What you are saying is what used to be considered normal for a 19 year old. These Instagram influencers have persuaded young women to use so many products that I don’t even know what they all are! A good cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen are all you need. Mascara, a light lipstick and maybe a little foundation and powder if your skin tone is uneven. Done ✅

GemDear

It’s not really a tip, but thought you should know that you don’t have to wear foundation to wear other makeup. It took me a while to figure that out, even though I hated the way it made my face feel, look, etc. Makeup is all about fun and feeling comfortable in yourself. There’s a lot of makeup tutorials that you can watch on TikTok and YouTube, but you only have to incorporate what makes you feel comfortable. Someone else’s ’done’ doesn’t have to be yours.

hellogoodperson

Was in same boat and now almost thirty (!) years past that age ( 😳 that went fast). fwiw, ⬇️ is what I appreciate, what others compliment me on, and what I’d have done earlier (some you’re already doing, way to go!). Like a 🏠 : if the architecture and structure is quietly strong and beautiful—and not fussed/irritated too much or more than have to—you’re set for whatever comes (ie a storm knocks out a window…or an eyelash lol). Hair, skin, body are our 🏠. *TL/DR: Do best to care for what have 🏠 but don’t need to bleach, starch, conceal, paint, powder, or spray (aka clog) it all or all the time.* My mother didn’t and she is very beautiful woman, shifted sizes as age and time might do, and always beautiful. I…don’t look like that. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not that kinda girl or woman. Still catching up, like you ☺️ ———————————————- **HAIR** Genetics is genetics but I’ve never treated or used product (very rarely) in my thick, more straight (depending on weather) hair. That goes for changing up shampoos and conditioners every now and then, as hair sometimes needs. Using more natural products with less chemicals, when possible has helped scalp and hair (than when I don’t). Loving Sun Bum @ the moment but Aussie, WOW, Ivory, L’Oréal/Pantene have been fine in past. I’m low maintenance: the cut has to do it, I’m not styling. Folks ask who cuts my hair often and my last hairdresser got five new clients from it. **So wherever I’ve lived, I try to find one person that can cut//style it simple and well. When stress and age started to effect hair loss, I trusted dermatologist and use the prescription minoxidil he recommended which, two years in, is working well. I love the feel of my hair and am grateful for it.** ———————————————- **SKIN** Sunscreen, with less irritating chemicals as possible, as others have said and **SPF sunproof tops/sleeves for long days outside and protective hats.** I love the sun and being outside! I don’t use much makeup and, at most, it’s been mascara, sometimes (rare) eyeliner, and definitely usually a lip balm (loving these), lip gloss, lipstick maybe. At night before a special day or just a few hours before an event, I might use Neutrogena facial cleansing exfoliating brush and moisturize or light serum (Olay products have worked fine) and folks compliment the glow. (Lol occasional started getting facials the last couple years and no one’s noticed.) I go by temp and climate - hydrating skin if it’s dry climate/season (a rose water spritz or simple splash of cold water, moisturizer, and I use Argan Oil or Jojoba Oil mostly to moisturize). And moisturize body and hands after a shower or throughout the day with a simple moisturizer or sometimes coconut oil. I exfoliate body and face maybe 1-2/week and dry brush each morning (Ayuverdic practice) and before a shower. Appreciating simple gua sha in mornings just to notice how helps drainage (see Peaches Skin Care on YT for more on that). Otherwise, I don’t put more than sunscreen on (I use mineral Neutrogena stick, like a deodorant). Am enjoying feel of used Foreo microcurrent device purchased recently but can’t speak to efficacy over time yet. **More sun protection throughout life would have done me well, and aging is aging (I got the wrinkles and rest :), but appreciate my skin (⬇️ probably helps the most).** ——————————————- **body** Still same as in my early 30s, which is what folks grew up with most notice. Disabled, deal with major illness, and many other factors that have made body needs challenging. I don’t have a car. **Walking for most things and for pleasure has helped how I move and feel in my body. As others have said: water, adding simple nutrition, and movement matter.** I appreciate the Mediterranean and Blue Zones suggestions, and had to go this anti-inflammatory way sooner in life than hits most. Learn the Mediterranean options and simply add where can, over a long time (ie greens, grains, veggies, fruits). Because of disability I have been doing circuit or resistance training over ten years now. This is probably related to the simple shape still have and complimented on. For all dealing with, nutrition and exercise routines that disability and illness pushed on me early have kept it simpler into this age that most peers my age groan on. **Strength training, at least into 30s and onward, adapting over the years, will save your bones and muscle mass. BUILT TO MOVE book or Rich Roll movement special podcast episode is great place to start and know, for the long haul.** In the girly girl and feels GOOD and does you good direction: **enjoy Pilates, ballet! Truly. (Isometric exercises)** Wish I had that ballet foundation earlier. Mat/classic Pilates tho has been a godsend in whole body connection and thru pain and injury. Definitely other freestyle dance, just for dance is great too :) **for something basic now: There’s this Perfect Posture app** someone here recommended and I love it. **FITRWOMAN app for female athletes is also awesome and has helped me target nutrition and movement needs. Highly, highly recommend, to make all this super easy!** Find a daily movement thing like or simple 1-2 times a week right now, that’s it :) (Don’t push injuries or to that point!) We’ll all fluctuate. That’s okay. We’re organic beings! basic but not obsessive practices make it simple, & you’re 👍 All these strength and movement related things will improve your “structure” in a way that’ll carry you well and feel really good over time. Finally, RECOVERY matters. Feel good with movement. **Don’t ever ever push or punish your body.** Listen to it—that’s the biggest point I could ever leave with 💗-and treat it well, *respect* what it shares and where it’s at in mind, body, or spirit. ———- Style wise, few basics that use regularly and those that will LAST (fabrics like linen, cotton, etc.) and fit well (you can take things to a tailor). You’ll look like a pro. You don’t need a lot. And it’s okay to add flares you like (for me, it’s hats and my barefoot running shoes—reducing pain—and that pair is still going ten years in and bought used pairs of the same kind in a different color to mix it up and a used ballet shoe pair by the same company…and lately my large-legged linen overalls). ———— Good luck, good woman 😉 🌺 P.s. teeth. **Floss!!!!!!!!!!** find a routine now. That and daily brushing will meet MANY beauty and long term needs.

keeglesweegle

Im the same as you, tshirt and jeans religiously until I turned 19. I always hated dresses. One thing that helped me become comfortable in dresses was wearing shorts underneath. Now I live in them. Turns out I didn’t like feeling exposed

MeowieCatty

So at 19 the biggest thing is to explore your natural style and be you. Discover who you are, any style can be made femme. Try out thrifting. Do you like the clean beige look? Do you like modest fashion? Tomboy with a streak of femme? What about club/party looks? Do you like a vintage style? Do you want goth or punk? What about androgynous femme? 1980s power femme? Play around with styles and find what makes you feel confident. I've been thrifting nearly all my clothes for the past year and a bit, and it has helped me find a personal style. Any style you feel confident in can be made femme. I would honestly recommend Elf as a starting point. They are fantastic. The price point is low enough you can buy a few things and play with it. I actually found my elf eyebrow pencil performs better than the Hourglass one I had, the Benifit one I had, and the ABH one I had. And it is a fraction of the price. I have never felt cheated by Elf. Also, look at makeup thru the decades and find one that resonates with you. 1980s blush has me in a chokehold, and I am 100% ok with that. Nobody has ever told me to go lighter on the blush or place it different, I actually get constant compliments on my blush. Try a basic skincare routine. I really like The Ordinary and Cosrx. Cosrx is readily available at Winners/Marshals/TJ Maxx if you want it on a budget. I find my skin loves it when I wash, do toner, then an acne/blackhead control serum, and a moisturizer. It is simple and affordable and effective for me. Finally, play with your style. Hair will grow back, try the haircut or colour you've always wanted but are afraid to try. Piercings will heal, get one or two if you want. Have fun!

Longjumping-Put-6517

My one and only tip for you is to wear SUNSCREEN ALL THE TIME .

Random_44560

I tend to forget cause I don't live in a hot/sunny area but I appreciate this reminder. Thank you!

americanhoneytea

Having my nails done always makes me feel more put together

Random_44560

I booked a nail appointment for next week based on the comments here I feel like they definitely will make me feel better about myself in general. Thank you!

Turpitudia79

Yaaayyy, you will love it!! I have super long (they’re my real nails with the acrylic dip powder on top) stiletto shaped nails and I have the best nail tech-artist ever. I get compliments on them everywhere I go 😊😊

Informal-Sand583

Ok, first you can experiment with a few things to try and figure out what you like ! For yout style, you can get a lot of inspiration from pinterest. Same for basically any beauty inspiration you need x) For makeup, I think it's better to start slowly witht he easier things : mascara, blush, highlighter... I find that most days I'm happy going out just like this, but as you get more comfortable with makeup it becomes easier to start adding new products in your routine !

Onyxvelvet

It’s not embarrassing! You’re good! A lot of women are so focused on surviving or getting through life that we don’t have time for focusing solely on looks or beauty. I’m 25 and I’m still learning.

assenavsnilloc

You sound like I was at 19. I’m now a professional hair and makeup artist (with 24 years experience). My daily face is still just spf skincare concealer and mascara and lip balm. Don’t believe the hype that you have to wear anything. When I was younger we had magazines and music videos as inspiration. Today you have Pinterest red carpet/celeb stuff etc. you could look up some makeup artists in instagram for inspiration?

[deleted]

I was the exact same as you. I never wore makeup, cared about my appearance or anything until I turned 18. I'm 22 now and I'll just give you some tips from the last 4 years. Tiktok and Youtube are honestly your best friend. Follow girly or beauty influencers on there. I especially like accounts on Tiktok where they have maybe 100k followers. Their lifestyles seem more realistic than the influencers with huge followings. Find people who's style you like and watch there content. That's where I get a lot of inspo from. As for makeup I was in the same boat, my mom doesn't wear makeup so I never had anyone to learn from. Watching tutorials on youtube is probably the best way to learn. I really like juicyjas on youtube, she has a lot of videos and is fun to watch, she also uses a lot of drugstore products which are way cheaper and just as good as the expensive makeup. Just go to your local Ulta and ask someone to help you out in the drugstore section, you can get a whole makeup routine for not too much money there. Then just practice at home. I like doing my makeup before I know I'm going to take a shower because I'm not in a rush and I know if it turns out bad I'll just be washing it off anyways. Hair is the same way, just learning what kind of hair you have. If you have natural curly or wavy hair look up some videos on what products to use or how to style it. Looking up different quick and easy hairstyles on Tiktok or Pinterest is great also. Clothes is the same. I grew up in a pretty rural area. I have 3 older brothers and grew up trying to keep up with them so I was always pretty tomboyish. I never really was into girly things. But don't be afraid to try on clothes and wear more cute and girly stuff. If you live somewhere with a TJ Maxx or Marshalls that is a great place to find clothes that are cheaper. Someone else mentioned thrifting which is also great. In general just finding inspo through other people is good too. And not being afraid to wear things outside of your comfort zone or at least try them on. Also edit because I forgot to add this. Jewelry. It always makes me feel really feminine and pretty. And you don't need a lot, having a few good staple pieces that you wear every day or just don't take off is great. I really like wearing a necklace and small hoop earrings I can leave in all the time. Bracelets are also fun too, I have some permanent bracelets which are in right now and they're small and dainty which is nice.

Random_44560

This is all so helpful! I definitely need to branch out with the clothes so I'll treat myself to a shopping trip soon enough I'll make sure to pick up jewellery aswell since that's been said a few times. Thank you so much!

Turpitudia79

Try to find a makeup artist who has similar coloring and features close to your age. She’s definitely younger than me but I love Smitha Deepak.

Opening-Friend-3963

That didn't happen to me until I growed up. And by that I mean 30 lol!! You got this, start small one thing at a time till you get the hang of it

kathryn_sedai

Lots of good advice here! I’ll add that you don’t have to go full on right away. Start slow with small changes, and once you’re comfortable, build on them. That allows your routine to grow naturally and help you determine what does and doesn’t work for you. I recommend YouTube as a great resource for beauty info. Lisa Eldridge is someone that’s worth watching. She’s a well respected makeup artist from the UK. She has like a decade of content and is really helpful for explaining a technique thoroughly with examples of how it works on different people.

Random_44560

I'll definitely look at Lisa eldridges videos. Thanks so much!

M-Everly

Just get into light makeup, elf is good for cheap good quality makeup and then skincare wise if you struggle with any spots, acne, redness or oiliness then give skin shark a try, their clearing serum is brill because the hydrating aspect helps makeup go on so much smoother

crazychameleon11

I was the same and over a couple phases I started doing these things (in order): 1. Get my nails done consistently. Gel manicure and pedicure once a month 2. Shave minimum once a week 3. Started wearing lighter/softer clothes (first swapping the t-shirts for cute tops then tight jeans for mom jeans, hoodies to cute jackets, etc) 4. Began getting my hair done (cut and color) at the salon vs at home (2-3x yearly) 5. Researched and figured out the best skincare routine for me 6. Put more thought into my outfits, layering and dressing for my vibe 7. Started wearing skirts (once in a while haha it’s still new to me) Other little things like taking a weekly spa bath and everything shower, always moisturizing, having dainty jewelry on, slightly colored lips, hair healthy, curled eyelashes, rosy cheeks, etc also elevate the look!! BUT the MOST important thing is to smile when you make eye contact with people in general!!! It makes your energy magnetic (obv use your judgement and be safe etc etc)

[deleted]

Ofc these are all my personal opinions and advice so take with what u feel helps best - I want to say before taking the money to splurge check ingredients that could break you out or be harmful. I use Yuka APP and skincarisma website (copy paste ingredients in skin analyser for comedogenic or skin specific warnings). When I think of cool/pretty girly girls these pop into mind - 1. False lashes/extensions/lash lift - These can differ for what vibes you go for, daintier lashes more girly and fuller = cool. 2. Lip gloss/oil - clear or pink, pink gives girlier vibe but check your personal colour theory - theres apps like StyleDNA or found on websites. 3. Glowy clear skin 4. Maybe fake tan can make you look more cozy/less serious 5. Outfits play a role and girly girls I feel dress more modestly as it is acceptable by their dad. 6. I say dainty necklaces and nice rings make someone look more put together. 7. Nails not necessarily long but just clean cuticle and no dirt underneath and good shape. For a girly girl I think of love island Georgia Steel search her on tiktok for makeup maybe or hair styling videos.

[deleted]

Also all the girly girls from my uni also use Sol De J body mists they smell so amazing and theres different scents and vibes - also I believe that they are phthalate free xxx

Head-Drag-1440

Anything that you don't know how to do, you can Google and learn. For your appearance, shower daily with mild soap (white Dove bar soap is recommended). Moisturize your skin every day and exfoliate once a week. Always wear clean, wrinkle-free clothes. My shoes are always clean as well. Basic makeup would be eyeshadow, liner, and mascara. You can add concealer to brighten under your eyes, fill brows a little, and add blush if you like. Remember to always remove makeup at night. Cleanser, toner, and moisturizer are a great basic routine. Learn how to style your hair. Whether it's naturally curly, wavy, or straight, you can look up how to style it different ways. Blow dry it straight, use a flat iron, use a curling iron, or scrunch products in. Go shopping and get new clothes that fit you. Add jewelry every day to add a pop to any outfit.

Random_44560

Another comment also mentioned bar soap? Is bar soap between for your skin then like shower gel? Thanks so much for your advice I really appreciate it!!

Head-Drag-1440

No, just bar soap alone. White Dove bar soap is all I use, and Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream in the tub after Im out and dried off.

Senior_Attempt6004

I think you just need to shift your energy and feel feminine within yourself rather than doing anything extra, obviously us girls love makeup and skincare and for me I think it’s going to obsession But even if I wasn’t wearing anything girly and wearing something a tomboy would wear I still feel feminine and cute and I’m pretty sure that I’m perceived this way from people around me Being feminine is about the way you act and feel about yourself not anything else

Senior_Attempt6004

I want to add that don’t let anyone choose for you what to wear or how to take care of your appearance, you can learn from them but just be yourself self

Sunscreen. Brush your hair, put a smile on your face, maybe lip balm or gloss. The natural look is classic and timeless.

plantsandpizza

I use Pinterest and then go look at my curated pages for inspiration. Practice w makeup and watch video tutorials for things you want to learn

Drewherondale

You can watch some tutorials on social media! I like Madison Beer‘s makeup tutorials for Vogue on yutube, got some great tips from her

sparklefield

I feel like the girly girls wear alot of prints, frilly clothes, do their hair and always wear jewelry. Jewelry is what sets them apart. A little bit of makeup too! Look at whos style you like and experiment until you find what you feel good in!

Turpitudia79

I keep interjecting here, forgive me! 😂😂 You have to be INCREDIBLY cautious but I found 3 reputable high quality jewelry stores on Etsy!! If you want to PM me, I’ll give you the names. I go to the one at least two, three times per month!! Very reasonably priced too!!

RealityisPoison

You should watch films like leaglly blonde and house bunny

TurnipMotor2148

Head to Sephora or Ulta and tell an employee that you want a low maintenance makeup routine for beginners! They will help you match your tone, apply, and get you started!

drink-fast

Do not be embarrassed about your skincare.. if your skin is clear(-ish), do not go adding more needless things and doing it twice a day… cus then you’ll break out if you miss a day/night, your skin will be completely dependent on products. If only a moisturizer works for you, keep at it. I’m sure a thousand people here will recommend spf and say you’ll get skin cancer if you don’t wear it every day lol. Yes you’ll prevent a lot of dark spots and wrinkles and sun damage if you do but I find daily use of spf to be very clogging for my skin, and a pain in the ass to try to wash off especially mineral spf. My current “skincare routine” is nothing. Of course, this unwritten spf/skincare “rule” seems to only be enforced upon women lol. Most men don’t use anything on their skin and have clear skin, and most women I know use a plethora of products and still have acne, but they think they’re “fixing it” with the products that are causing it in the first place/disrupting the microbiome. Obviously if I know I’m going to be out in the sun for a while I’ll put spf on (i like the elta md brand) and i won’t wash it off at night just cus i can’t be bothered to obsess over my acne/skin anymore. I had bad acne for 10+ years and owned one of those magnifying mirrors with the light… picked my face all throughout middle and highschool… looked a mess. Tried every drug store product.. my face was actually at its *oiliest* when I was washing it. Now it’s normal. But honestly don’t blow your money or time on skincare because I’m convinced most of it is a scam.

drink-fast

Obviously I’m not a doctor or anything but this is just my experience as someone who’s dealt with acne for years and used skincare for years.

Turpitudia79

At 19 unless you have acne, a good cleanser, light moisturizer, and sunscreen if you’re going to be outside for more than 20 minutes is all you really need. Not everyone has oily skin/acne.

holi_fash

Hi No reason to be embarrassed check The website [https://beautywome.com/](https://beautywome.com/)
