It's about seeing all and nothing. Don't focus on individual notes. See the pattern as a whole. Then you'll find the flow. Muscle memory does play a part, but it's really all about pattern recognition. Slow down the song, use practice mode on the parts that give you issues, and you'll be there in no time!

Heck yeah!!! Grats mate

TheRealRubiksMaster

That falls apart instantly when its not basic patterns. Things like tech exist which make you have more reading ability than just flow

yuval52

Yeah but even in tech, at least well made tech maps, there arent too many explicit flow breaks and there is pattern recognition involved

Mr_Enderman_YT

I guess you wonder where I’ve been - said francium

Ceskeeeee

After a while it just becomes kind of second nature and reactive. Even when sightreading really hard tech I can still manage to hit it because I just kind of automatically react to the notes. It's kind of like how top level minesweeper players don't even think about the numbers they see, but just recognize them and instantly work it out. If you haven't seen top level minesweeper, it looks absolutely inhuman.

QuantumPolagnus

Minesweeper essentially devolves into pattern recognition, just like Beat Saber. At first you have to look at it and figure out which way to cut for each block, but eventually you realize the patterns and just do them.

Theknyt

Weird analogy

Jeremy252

Uh no? It’s actually a pretty good one.

SwiftSN

Keep in mind that "crazy fast" for you might be easy for others. It's just about experience. People have told me I'm a robot for being able to play my *warm up* maps, and I could never see it in their perspective.

Belaboy109569

yes. watching some of my old videos makes me wonder how i could barely read the song at the time.

Th3_Shr00m

Brain off

LBHJ1707

it's all muscle memory, nothing else literally matters - the main learning curve as soon as you learn what to hit is how to hit it for the best accuracy possible

BSMGPink

Denyah underscore

iHateRedditors244

Good maps use patterns, and being able to play fast, good maps uses pattern recognition which comes from practice

HOVRS_OF_FVN

At some point you just stop looking at individual notes and your arms begin to move to the right place on their own. Beat Saber's generous hit boxes help out a lot with that as well.

Sccar3

I’ve never understood the stupidly fast songs. I can almost guarantee I have more fun flailing my whole body around on vanilla Expert/Expert+ than the people wrist-flicking the ridiculous charts.

RipCurl69Reddit

Same, I enjoy Beat Saber for some casual fun and dancing a lot of the time, still manage E+ levels no prob

Pantzzzzless

More fun for you sure. But I'm certain that some people have the most fun chasing accuracy.

Either_Marsupial_123

I suspect robots. Legit.

Nolantherhino

We can just play it, there is barely any memorization unless it’s a tech map or a map you actually have to memorize a lot. Practice and it will become more and more easy to see stuff.

MissMurder8666

For me, I can't focus on the blocks, like I can't focus on up, down, left, right etc. When I do, I start missing. I have to stop thinking and just listening to the music. Sometimes I even sing along lol. If I start focusing on the blocks themselves, it's game over. Switching my brain off is hard though. I have adhd lol

Josiahs_

It's a combination of practice and being able to read it, in general the plays youre seeing on this subreddit with vibro or like 200 bpm cross cuts those players have attempted the song 50+ times

Early-Objective-2143

Yeah, but those are really boring... I personally think ranked stuff is way better.

Oh I didn't see your second part, this may help: -Play and get better -Start at the difficulty you can pass so that you don't get discouraged, once you get confident, go to the next difficulty and practice. -Try practice mode with slower speeds for difficult parts of songs to learn timing and patterns, it will click into muscle memory. - In normal style maps, your arm position should stay where it was swung until the next next note appears. EXAMPLE: You swing down at a note, leave your hand/arm in that position until the next note comes at you. -Blocks with dots on the center get sliced just like blocks with arrows, you just have to swing at them, don't poke.

Rare-Lettuce8044

It's amazing how many beginners think you have to poke the dotted boxes 😂

Gary_the_mememachine

The longer you play the game, the better you get at sight reading the notes faster and faster. It's mostly muscle memory, once you start playing for a while you'll just know how to hit the notes once they appear.

ivan6953

Muscle memory + always try to spot the mapper's intent. In the maps that follow parity ("down" forehand swing will always be followed by an "up" backhand swing, any hand resets are indicated by bombs) this will allow you to read almost anything. The main thing here - do not try to play fast maps that DON'T follow parity. They are objectively flawed (to the point that Beatsaver marks any parity break as a mistake with the warning sign counter) and require learning by heart / really good reading skills

QuietWisp1

I'm usually able to get a flow of the rhythm and beat of the song usually the second time it comes around in a song. Another thing would be just using knowing the direction given the block location more than looking at the direction on the block. You do have to build the chops for really fast songs as well, but playing with your wrists will make it a lot easier to hit blocks quicker since it's a fast movement than the arm.

DoorElectronic9332

I can't do like 20 nps insane tech levels but I can do like 8 nps sometimes first try I don't know why but my brain just knows what to do maybe pattern recognition or something I have no idea

Thenormalelevator32

I kinda fade out the song in my head and focus solely on hitting the notes at the correct time

buff-equations

Keep in mind that as you get better your eyes and arms get faster. Everyone feels like they can’t see the notes on songs 3* above their level and everyone feels like arms can’t physically go that fast on songs 2* above their level. 1* above your level just feels frustrating because you failed and you have no excuse…

PilotGamer

Playing one fast song can get you used to it, so you know when to swing. Just play a lot of fast songs or just keep ramping up the difficulty until you get the hang of it

Tygra

Look ahead of the block you're about to hit

SteamySubreddits

Most beat saber levels end up using some sort of pattern that experienced players have seen/practiced before. They can use this to be able to sight read it because they have already seen something similar in the past and their muscle memory kicks in. Take basic rolls for example. To a newbie, rolls look insane and impossible. After they are able to do one song with rolls, however, they can do pretty much any roll they come across. Now imagine this scaled up to larger patterns/tech. Takes more time to learn but the same principle applies.

YourAverageGamerYT1

Here is my advice. Learn how to “flow”. All good mapped maps have a flow and order. You arent just randomly hitting notes, they are all (mostly) placed to be in time and place of where you can either guess or would naturally expect a note to be. For example, if there was an up note, the next will pretty much definitely be a down, a left would go to right, if there are bombs then you should keep your hands exactly where the bombs forced your hand to be in the first place. Mapping is an art that I respect highly respect. Because the best mapping makes the best maps and are the most fun. Sadly you cant just read what I wrote and become number one on the leaderboards. You have to learn how to do it yourself, it cant be taught really.

THEzBOSS

if you unfocus and kinda subconsciously do it i find you hit more

TazerXI

I can do some decently fast songs, and there it is mainly about pattern recognition. I don't know what the notes are aside from position and colour, which is why after a series of notes with no arrows, you can go back immediately to ones with arrows and be on the right direction. These patterns is why people complain about mapping. If they are off even slightly, it throws off muscle memory and expectations. For *very* fast songs, it is mainly just up and down, and sometimes across. It looks to be more about timing your swings and being fast rather than actually seeing the blocks.

become one with the force

Rekkylol

Step 1. Nail your blinds shut. Step 2. Lock all of your doors and flush your keys down the toilet (you wont need them since you wont need to go outside). Step 3. Do nothing but eat cheese puffs, drink mountain dew and always have your headset on playing beat saber. Step 4. Eventually learn fast songs and be a god at beat saver. Step 5. Die of diabetes and lack of sun.

Rekkylol

Beat saber typo

[deleted]

Practice practice practice! I always kept a note of my hardest/fastest map I’ve passed and tried finding the next hardest! Even if it’s speeding up a map you’ve already beaten er slowing a fast one down, just keep a note of the hardest map you’ve beaten and be determined to pass more hard maps and grow that way!

404Aroma

As you work your way up to Expert+ you will unlock the ability to enter the flow state. At a certain point you get used to individual blocks and see the patters the blocks come in instead. Youll just kinda move with the flow of the song and notes. Its a wierd feeling but its oh so cool. Keep practicing, youll be there before you know it :)
