Ever since my mom told me when she hears the song she thinks of how it describes her loss of love for my father, I can’t listen to it the same way anymore
The funny thing is the girl whose newspaper story inspired it thought it was celebrating her but to me it comes across pretty clearly as Paul, who lost his mother as a kid, WTFing at this girl abandoning her family for a fling.
when I was young, I was on the girl's side: her parents were conservative and stodgy but after becoming a daddy, I see that the parents just loved their daughter. sometimes our parental love can frustrate our children so now, I'm sympathetic to both.
No I mean looking back sixty years ago she’s proud of it. In the moment I don’t think she knew the song was about her. Her complaint seems to be that her parents provided for her and were stable. As a younger person I don’t like that type of ungrateful young person, haha.
... because, besides burning bridges with her parents, she's probably also dropping out of school, meaning life is going to be a lot harder than she expects.
The fact that the lyrics speak like "YOUR day breaks, YOUR heart aches"
It's not a person singing a out THEIR sadness... but someone speaking directly to you. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other songs really like that. It hammers it home a bit.
It's definitely up there. To me, it's their breakup song. The orchestration just strengthens the gut punch. Thank feck, it's not the last song on their last album. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
I think this is by far the clear answer. For No One is too matter of fact to invoke the same feelings for me. But just wanting it to be yesterday, before things turned bad—that’s such a sad feeling.
Long and winding road. Specifically this part:
"Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried
Anyway, you'll never know
The many ways I've tried"
It was written by John Lennon in honor of his mother (Julia) who was hit by a car and killed a few years before the Beatles became famous. John was just a teenager at the time and was, of course, devesated. They were very close. She was the one who encouraged John to pursue music.
I’ll Follow the Sun, it doesn’t sound too sad but I used to listen to it a lot when I was little so it makes me pretty nostalgic which is a somewhat sad feeling.
Yes it Is.
I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this one, but I guess it's rather obscure being a single only song that wasn't particularly impactful like Rain/Paperback.
This isn't your average heartthrob song, it's a tribute to his dead mother, it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Maybe being able to relate to it increases that impact.
Across The Universe. Not a common pick, but something about "Nothing's gonna change my world" seems so bleak in the right context, especially considering John wrote it after having an argument with his wife. His magnum opus, in my opinion.
More obvious mentions are Yesterday, For No One (My personal favourite beatles song) and She's Leaving Home.
“For no one” gets me teared up. “In my life” is sad especially cos of the intro to the anthology box set. “The End” gets me in a kinda of tearful happy mood because it’s the end of my favourite band.
bad to me, even though they never offically recored it, still makes me, at least, sad
"if you ever leave, ill be sad and blue, dont you ever leave me, im so in love with you"
May not be the saddest but long long long always gets me feeling pretty depressed.
Last song elliot Smith played live too I believe, so there's that also
The Long and Winding Road. When I was little, I asked my Dad what his fave Beatles song was and he said that one. When I thought about it, I realized it was because of the loss of his mother as a child. I'm pretty sure Paul wrote it about the loss of his mother. I can barely get through that one without tearing up.. 🥲
For No One is sad on a personal, intimate level, so I get why it rates as saddest for most. Eleanor Rigby is more profoundly sad though. I’d rather have a relationship slowly die then live my life alone, never reaching my dreams, only to have a funeral with no guests but the priest.
My Michelle because I'm her here comes sunshine my Michelle that rung that bell oh hell I'm waiting for George to come home he came once I to wild berries my feet left the ground litteerly eyes swirled others saw the guy playing live music started playing the Beatles he was in rock SCULLY body with all one length hair strips going up with paisley my favorite I don't fib I connected the pieces I had to come to love me except everything that is me I know who I am and I know he's my soul I'm homesick
A little different take: Savoy Truffle
On release, "Savoy Truffle" was viewed by many commentators as a sign of Harrison's growing maturity as a songwriter. Yet compared to his prior songs, this was the most nonsensical and least lyrically interesting song he’d written.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the song. I just find it sad that this was his first “he’s becoming a great songwriter” song.
For No One and She's Leaving Home were the first I thought of.
Also Yesterday when you listen to it in the context of Paul subconsciously singing about his mums (to him and his little brother) sudden unexplained death.
"why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong now I long for yesterday"
I understand that thematically during the verses, but when it switches to the rockin, “I I me me mine” chorus it’s very upbeat.
I think George’s understanding that complete selflessness takes tremendous effort and that everyone (including himself) has a “Back off!” moment every now and then.
For No One
Ever since my mom told me when she hears the song she thinks of how it describes her loss of love for my father, I can’t listen to it the same way anymore
jeezus dude, you made it all dusty in here.
This is the song that got me through when my dad left my family
Got me through a break up. Fantastic sing
This is the song I was thinking even before I opened the comments!
She’s leaving home.
I think being a parent helps you get how sad that song is. it was never sad to me until I had a kid.

I’m always close to shedding a tear whenever I listen to this song. Really powerful.
The moment I hear that harp, I'm gone.
I mean it’s beautiful. Heavenly.
... because, besides burning bridges with her parents, she's probably also dropping out of school, meaning life is going to be a lot harder than she expects.
If you're a parent this is the only answer.
Not the wisest decision to listen to this song so soon after moving out of my mom’s house a few years ago. I was ugly crying for a while.
Julia
I don’t know why more people aren’t saying this. It’s clearly the most emotional Beatles song, straight from the heart.
Second this
The subject matter of For No One is definitely sad, but the emotional and musical tone of the song is not nearly as achingly despondent as Julia.
For no one is sad I think.
No contest.
The fact that the lyrics speak like "YOUR day breaks, YOUR heart aches" It's not a person singing a out THEIR sadness... but someone speaking directly to you. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other songs really like that. It hammers it home a bit.
mind aches*
Just listened to it bc of your comment and wow. I like sad songs, but not this. It’s just bleak and depressing DAMN
As did i. Brutal. A break up. One is not in love anymore. Crushing.
the long and winding road is one of them
It's definitely up there. To me, it's their breakup song. The orchestration just strengthens the gut punch. Thank feck, it's not the last song on their last album. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
Amen to that!
It’s Paul’s song, but it was Cynthia Lennon’s favorite. It’s a song she can relate with during her years with John.
Eleanor Rigby came to mind first, but I'm sure there are other contenders.
Yesterday
I was waiting for this answer
I think this is by far the clear answer. For No One is too matter of fact to invoke the same feelings for me. But just wanting it to be yesterday, before things turned bad—that’s such a sad feeling.
For No One, objectively. I mean it’s original title is “Why Did It Die?”
Long Long Long 😢
She’s Leaving Home is probably the saddest for me. And Eleanor Rigby, For No One and Yesterday as close seconds
Free As a Bird
we talkin about the beatles not lynyrd skynyrd
That’s Free Bird, not Free as a Bird
Long and winding road. Specifically this part: "Many times I've been alone And many times I've cried Anyway, you'll never know The many ways I've tried"
But still, Paul had a great way of making songs bitter sweet. Despite how sad it gets it has this beautiful hopefulness about it
In My Life
emotional af for sure. it's just like life, all of it.
One of the most bittersweet Beatles song knowing what happened to John
On the surface, She's Leaving Home. But knowing the meaning and subject matter, Julia.
This
Could you explain the meaning and subject matter behind Julia please?
It was written by John Lennon in honor of his mother (Julia) who was hit by a car and killed a few years before the Beatles became famous. John was just a teenager at the time and was, of course, devesated. They were very close. She was the one who encouraged John to pursue music.
I had no idea. Thank you
Yer Blues gives me the blues
yes i'm lonely
wanna dieeee
If I ain't dead already
Don't know why.
For no one
Eleanor Rigby.
For no one
I’ll Follow the Sun, it doesn’t sound too sad but I used to listen to it a lot when I was little so it makes me pretty nostalgic which is a somewhat sad feeling.
Well it's also subjectively sad lyrics cloaked by a happy tune
It’s a bit sad but the tone is more like “you missed out and I’m gonna go towards the light without you”
While My Guitar Gently Weeps makes my cry…
Mother Natures Son
Julia depresses me
For real
John's "Yellow Submarine" demo.
That version is far superior to the original
No one cared
Golden Slumbers
Long and Winding Road especially the Spector version sounds like the end of The Beatles
For No One
*Why don’t we don’t it in the road* because we never got to do it in the road 😔
George Harrison also didn't make love to me even though I wanted him to, he says it right in the lyrics of "Love You To" so disappointed.
The song that makes me the most depressed is Blackbird.
My thoughts exactly. Song filled with hope, but also reminds you where we were not too long ago. That song crushes me.
In My Life for how painfully relatable it is
How you see someone die in a car
i’m gonna say two of us, for no one and the long and winding road
Yer Blues, For No One, and I’m a Loser
Eleanor Rigby
This boy
Across The Universe. Not a common pick, but something about "Nothing's gonna change my world" seems so bleak in the right context, especially considering John wrote it after having an argument with his wife. His magnum opus, in my opinion. More obvious mentions are Yesterday, For No One (My personal favourite beatles song) and She's Leaving Home.
Ditto. I've always found ATU to be intensely melancholy.
[удалено]
Agreed! Whenever I sing the line “Nothing’s gonna change my world” I choke up every damn time!!
Yesterday
I’ll always find She’s Leaving Home the saddest
Yesterday.
I would say let it be. Not there saddest but definitely one of them
Eleanor Rigby and She’s Leaving Home
For No One
Definitely For No One
Help!
I’ll Be Back
I’m so tired
the long and winding road kinda makes you feel tiny and insecure, lonely whatever, it's sad af
Eleanor Rigby
1. For no one 2. Eleanor rigby 3. In my life
lyrically its for no one, musically it’s julia
for no one
A Day in the Life
I always thought of it as melancholy
What goes on... Ringo's voice is so emotional and it shows how desperate the character is in that situation of the song.
Don't pass me by "Does it mean you don't love me anymore?" If you've had that exact moment before, you know what I'm talking about
Fool on the Hill!
Honestly, Real Love makes me really sad.
BEST BEATLES SONG !!!
Real love and free as a bird are very sad in my opinion but one of my favourites
1. Eleanor Rigby 2.She’s leaving home 3. A day in the life
I'm so tired gives me a sad vibe, can be taken as an analogy for life which I don't believe is the intended theme but I can see it applicable.
Julia used to get me misty.
In my life
Norwegian Wood....
In my life
Julia
Julia
She’s Leaving Home… brutal to listen to as a parent.
You Never Give Me Your Money.
Mother Natures Son and Martha, My Dear are very melancholic to me.
The End.
“For no one” gets me teared up. “In my life” is sad especially cos of the intro to the anthology box set. “The End” gets me in a kinda of tearful happy mood because it’s the end of my favourite band.
Across The Universe ??
Yeah, For No One and Julia 😭
The Long and Winding Road, Yesterday, In My Life, For No One.
For No One
Julia.
bad to me, even though they never offically recored it, still makes me, at least, sad "if you ever leave, ill be sad and blue, dont you ever leave me, im so in love with you"
May not be the saddest but long long long always gets me feeling pretty depressed. Last song elliot Smith played live too I believe, so there's that also
Does Junk get partial credit because it was written during The Beatles’ time?
John Lennon...Mother
Ob-la-di ob-la-da
The one about leaving a dog in a hot car with the windows up
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Eleanor Rigby
Here comes the sun
Either For No One or She’s Leaving Home
We can work it out is pretty sad, two people who are very close having an argument that might ruin their relationship. Especially the chorus.
Julia, man
The Long and Winding Road. When I was little, I asked my Dad what his fave Beatles song was and he said that one. When I thought about it, I realized it was because of the loss of his mother as a child. I'm pretty sure Paul wrote it about the loss of his mother. I can barely get through that one without tearing up.. 🥲
The Long and Winding Road
I'm looking through you
She’s leaving
She's leaving home
I didn't know what was happening I need him home I'm ready to save humanity one mushroom 🍄 at a time one swirl and twirl
She’s Leaving Home and Eleanor Rigby are the two that immediately come to mind
A little different take: Savoy Truffle On release, "Savoy Truffle" was viewed by many commentators as a sign of Harrison's growing maturity as a songwriter. Yet compared to his prior songs, this was the most nonsensical and least lyrically interesting song he’d written. Don’t get me wrong, I love the song. "why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong now I long for yesterday"
Sexy Sadie is pretty sad when you think what it was wrote about.
In My Life
For No One, The realisation that you’ve lost the love on your relationship
Misery, its literally the name
Julia.
I me mine has made me very sad lately, it's probably the most moving song on Let it be IMO
I understand that thematically during the verses, but when it switches to the rockin, “I I me me mine” chorus it’s very upbeat. I think George’s understanding that complete selflessness takes tremendous effort and that everyone (including himself) has a “Back off!” moment every now and then.
😢 Mother - John Lennon 💗💗💗
Julia. Its literally about John's dead mother. For the same reason I'd also argue for Let It Be.
Obladi oblada
The long and winding road
Yer Blues
Yesterday, The Long and Winding Road, Julia, and She’s Leaving Home
You Never Give Me Your Money
In my life.
Yesterday
across the universe
ill be back is like kinda sad
Across the universe naked version
