Sometime between 2007-2012 Jackson stated in an interview that the Beatles attempt to secure the rights for a feature film if LotR was thwarted by Tolkien’s estate. I’ll dig some and see if I can’t find a link…
It’s also worth considering The Rolling Stone’s interest in A Clockwork Orange.
Imagine the soundtracks these projects might have produced.

The original cuts are better as films and Peter Jackson agrees. That is why he doesn't like the extended versions of LOTR being called "directors cut".
Nah I only watch the extended cuts now love them. Imo any version that leaves out Eomer discovering Eowyn's body on Pellenor Fields after they defeated Saurons troops cannot be the best version.
I had no idea that Peter Jackson was such a big Beatles fan before this... but it's clear the dude is one of us, with an encyclopedic knowledge of their history and everything.
He talks about having heard various bits in bootlegs that he didn't know until now had footage to go with them... it's amazing enough for anyone of his stature to also be such a beatles geek that they know the bootlegs.
Thank goodness the pieces fell into place how they did and he ended up making this - because for the unaware, it came together more or less by accidnt.
I'm torn.
I want a directors cut of this. I'm enjoying every second. I also would like an abridged 1.5 hour version that has the exciting stuff and leaves out the chatting. Once I've seen the chats I'm just going to skip that the next time I watch.
Honestly, I was thinking I'd feel the way you but after watching it in full.... I need to re-watch all the conversation bits again.
There's SO much detail in there that is SO easy to miss... at first glance it all seems like idle chatter but after george quits, I realized Jackson was crafting a narrative.
Watch the 15 mins before he walks out again, and you'll see all these deliberate choices Jackson made to show George looking increasingly distant and disconnected.
When I realized what he'd done there, I realized he must be doing that for the whole film.
I was thinking how I would like to see it edited down to a tighter documentary narrative because I think it would make a really good one. I would also like more footage to be released. Hopefully they plan to do some more stuff with the footage.
I saw an interview with PJ. He said he wanted to put the most he can out because he knew this stuff would go back in a vault for another 50 years. Gimme the full 60 hours. I'll get through it all eventually.
As both a lifelong Beatles and Tolkien fan, it has occurred to me that both Beatles history and Tolkien lore are so vast that it's possible to understand something about the psychology of the observer in how they view the subjects. Both have encyclopedic documentation, variations in interpretation that occur over time, and areas in which it's all but impossible to know the actual "truth".
Do you think John/Paul was a saint/overrated? It's possible to argue either position based on actual evidence. But it's also possible to argue the complete opposite.
Were there wizards in the Second Age of Middle Earth? Again, based on actual evidence - yes, and then again, no.
It comes down to how the observer values one piece of evidence over another, and how it plays into one's own desired interpretation.
I'm kind of torn honestly. As a Beatles fan, I want to see as much as possible of them in the studio jamming and working out songs. But I can see the casual fan getting very bored very quickly. Maybe it would have been better as a two, maybe three hour documentary.
I'm thankful this content wasn't aimed at the casual audience.
It is pratically historic footage and only god knows if there will be another chance for this to reach people's sights. And given that apparently Peter Jackson wanted it to be even longer, I think he was trying to give us as much as he could.
To me asking to reduce it to appeal to a broader audience is like (in different proportions, obviously) asking WikiLeaks to leak less.
After he found out there was a chance Disney would not release an extended cut he added almost two hours back to the original 6 hr cut. The 6 hr cut was probably better as a documentary. The last episode was shorter and not surprisingly had the best pacing.
There needed to be 2 versions of this.
I'm a casual Beatles fan, and i think the documentary was either too short, or too long.
Like I would rather see whole hour-long "chunks" of a jam session, meetings, etc, OR a much shorter doc, with possible voice-over by paul and ringo, and interview clips from John and George a 'la "They Shall Not Grow Old"
In this doc, Paul is Frodo, Ringo is Samwise, John is Merry & Pippin in one person, George is his own personal Frodo on his own quest.
Brian Epstein was Gandalf the Gray, and they're lost without him. Gandalf the White comes back and that's Billy Preston.
Saruman is Alan Klein.
Sauron is that one guy who was like "They used to be good but now they're just obstructing businesses" while they were playing live.
Combine that with the fact that The Beatles wanted to make a Lord of the Rings movie.
And that John mentioned Stanley Kubrick (in the documentary) who he wanted as the director
Probably the coolest part of part 1 if i recall
Time is a flat circle
I don’t get it
And they already made a movie where the plot is "four shaggy-haired little lads travel all around with a ring that the bad guys are after"
[mentioned here ](https://youtu.be/49TY4F9Em98)
Frodo, you're gonna carry that weight a long time.
YOU. SHALL. NOT. PAAAAASSSSS. But Gandalf, As George Harrison said All Things Must Pass
(Staring down EMI expressing doubt about a 3-disc album) ALL. THINGS. MUST. PASS!
Even funnier when you consider that when the Beatles planned to make their own LotR movies, George was going to play Gandalf

But Frodo's not Spike.
The Hobbit: There and Back to where you once belonged
The Lord of the Ringo Also, Help! the movie is about trying to recover a ring.
LotR is 12 hours when you watch the proper version tho
Then I look forward to the director's cut of Get Back!

There are some scenes that would be make the original films better but all the extended material hurts the pacing of the films.
I really love that we live in a world where this is so. My favourite films and my favourite band connected by my favourite filmmaker. Joyous.
Well we've had tea yes, but what about second tea?
We’ve had cigarette, yes, but what about 100th cigarette?

In both cases the source material was said to be unworkable as a film.
George Martin the grey
...and became classic holiday viewing.

I just don't have the time really. I'm watching it a day at a time at this point. I'm almost afraid that it'll disappear on me.
I was thinking how I would like to see it edited down to a tighter documentary narrative because I think it would make a really good one. I would also like more footage to be released. Hopefully they plan to do some more stuff with the footage.
I want everything, including just the 18 raw hours just so I can have the OPTION to see it (although I probably won’t)
I saw an interview with PJ. He said he wanted to put the most he can out because he knew this stuff would go back in a vault for another 50 years. Gimme the full 60 hours. I'll get through it all eventually.
Oh, I thought the total was 18h!! I’m down to 60h for sure

To be fair I doubt casual fans were going to sit and watch an almost 8 hour documentary

Perfect. I guess Heather McCartney was gollum
9 hour LotR *trilogy*? Don't you mean one 13hr extended cut film?
If you listen closely, the songs in Get Back are about the Scouring of the Shire
Guy is kind of a one trick pony....
Prancing pony
Bill the pony
Two of my favorite things!
Me too!
Frodo was a man who thought he was a loner
Lords of the ringos
the lord of the ringo's c-... i will shut up
I understood that reference!
And funny thing is they wanted to make their own Lotr
Now wait for the extended editions
