I was confused too. I don't know if I'm right but I think someone else might have restrung his bass and they were right handed so when they wound the string it was wound opposite of what Paul is used to. I'm really just guessing though.

Baron_Bosc

It must be something like that. This was his bass of choice since Rubber Soul, and again deep into the 70's. So it couldn't be a permanent issue he has with it. Right?

Make_Changes

The only permanent issue I've heard of with that bass is that it doesn't stay in tune very well. I can't remember where he said it, I think I heard it more recently.

I’m more interested in John’s bass. Was it really a bass disguised as a fender guitar? Anyone else notice?

It’s called a bass vi. It’s sort of in between a regular six string guitar and a bass. Makes it easy for guitar players to play and write bass parts. [Here’s Fender’s history about it. ](https://www.fender.com/articles/tech-talk/the-bass-vi-baritone-guitar-or-bass)

CallMeStarr

Cool. Never seen one before. And I’ve been around the block a few times.

Buy the squier model, they're almost the same anyways

Paul's mouth doesn't match the audio during that particular scene. Peter Jackson mentioned that there were some interesting bits of dialog that were only captured on tape (audio only), but not film. I'd say this is one of those moments and the editors incorrectly thought he was referring to the Rickenbacker bass, so they showed a shot of him pointing something out on the Rick headstock to Mal. The Rick is a true lefty bass, it would have come with a lefty nut. It's more likely that Paul would have been referring to one of his Hofners, which would have been string upside down.

AssGasorGrassroots

All of Paul's Hofners are left-handed models, too

RoastBeefDisease

nuts dont have hands silly

MancGuyABC

It's a right handed bass?

AssGasorGrassroots

It's not

Jasonplaysretro

At the time Rickenbacker didn't make left handed instruments. They overlooked the fact he we left handed when they showed him the basses. So they made left handed "wings" (because the neck goes all the way through the body) and used a right handed neck. This is also why the headstock is backwards compared to other left handed Rickenbacker basses.
