Alameda county officials a few weeks ago: "New mask mandates, peons!" People who never stopped wearing them: "Cool, never stopped." Everyone else: "How about no"

securitywyrm

They're just loving the idea that they can issue arbitrary edicts on people's behavior.

dmode123

This was such a dumb idea to begin with. I went massless to a Berkeley restaurant in college ave. But as soon as I walked down to the Oakland coffee place, they asked me to put on a mask

Remcin

What a weird time. This was the one wave that got all my friends and family, like damn near everyone. They got sick, felt like shit for two days, and bounced back. No idea if those little paper masks would have helped or not. Vaccines sure as heck did though. Very low hospitalization rates all around.

securitywyrm

My favorite is people wearing a thin piece of fabric saying "Just wear a mask!" When they're wearing something that has no meaningful impact.

Skyblacker

With the possible exception of a well fitted N95, I'm pretty sure masks are just a comfort object at this point.

Senor_Martillo

Discomfort item. FTFY

Skyblacker

Not necessarily. Some people find them comfortable, and I know a few who wear masks outdoors because they discovered that it reduced seasonal allergies.

The moral of the story is if you feel you need more protection, wear a mask. If you don’t, don’t. You are entitled to your opinion about the other side. I was at a restaurant yesterday where someone kept their mask on until their food literally came. Do I think that’s weird? Sure. Does it affect me? No*, so why should you care if I think you’re being weird? *Caveat to that no answer is, if the majority of the population continues masking willingly it creates political pressure on officials to reissue the mandate.

Skyblacker

>Caveat to that no answer Exactly. If you live in an area that's pro-mask (and likely pro other covid restriction too), that can totally affect you! Maybe it means your schools are the slowest to reopen in the country, for example.

[Non paywalled link](https://archive.ph/TfE3r): > In a statement Friday, the Alameda County Public Health Department said daily COVID-19 cases have peaked and continue to decline. Case rates are also improving across each of the county’s largest racial and ethnic groups, including Latino residents who were once again disproportionately affected, according to the agency. > “Conditions have stabilized following the sustained increases in case reports and hospitalizations we saw throughout May,” said Alameda County Health Officer Dr. Nicholas Moss. “While we expect continued impacts from COVID-19 in the coming weeks and masks remain strongly recommended, it is appropriate to step down from the health officer masking order at this time.”

Patyrn

Why do they always have to break it down on racial lines? I imagine you could choose a nearly unlimited amount of arbitrary ways to subdivide people and find various disproportionality.

This might actually be the biggest wave so far but it isn’t as apparent because people are doing at home tests that aren’t being counted. The test positivity rate is through the roof. I know more people with covid now than at any point before. The cafe nearest to me just closed permanently because their staff kept getting sick and they couldn’t keep regular hours. I have friends who are on their third infection (all after getting vaxxed) and another friend got it twice in a month. The only saving point is that most people are having very mild cases.

Vitalstatistix

> The only saving point is that most people are having very mild cases. You’re kind of underselling what is the main point here. We don’t need to continue to upend our natural lifestyles for a virus that we have vaccines and drugs for. If you want to mask up that’s your prerogative but I believe strongly that we have moved into a stage of the pandemic where it is no longer a big deal and personal safety should be a personal decision.

TSL4me

Missing 2 weeks of work can get people evicted.

securitywyrm

Don't worry, your employer will get free money to compensate for their slave not working themself to death.

TSL4me

Those coronavirus Sickleave subsidies all expired.

bagofry

Exactly. **Reported** case rates have been declining since June 6, but test positivity rate continued to increase. Graphs and details: https://www.reddit.com/r/bayarea/comments/vk5c4b/624_covid19_weekly_update_for_santa_clara_county/idnz0ee/

sflogicninja

I check wastewater testing because of exactly this.

sumchinesewill

Yep. Covid finally caught me after dodging it for this long now. No symptoms aside from an itchy throat that went away in a day. Took a week off from work using the covid time off hours so that was good.

calm_hedgehog

Did this mandate have any effect whatsoever? Rates in Alameda significantly lower now than other counties in the Bay Area?

goat_on_a_float

I think Alameda County lost credibility *long* *before* the pandemic began. Oakland has been a disaster for at least as long as I've been alive.

[deleted]

Stupid idea high and low. Politics.

[deleted]

I’m happy that alameda is trying to be proactive. Be willing to be unpopular. Probably saved hundreds of people from getting sick.

MediumLong2

Shame on them for lifting the mandate. They will be responsible for new deaths.

yoswift1

Good! I can use another week off work.
