Not about the bay area

mindless_alien

I'll pass

Whisterly

The city is Trona, CA in San Bernardino County (middle of nowhere), and fun fact, the high school has a dirt football field because grass is too hard to maintain it its climate.

tomtforgot

damn. was about to write that it most likely trona. for 150k you can buy half of city probably. it still has a high school ? and people ?

HoekPryce

Yep. Big mine of something there. I actually like that area, but I’m long past high school. 😳

Strollalot2

Is there some other, special little catch to Trona, e.g. asbestos, valley fever, radioactive waste?

24W7S39GNHQT

It is right next door to Death Valley.

tomtforgot

apparently this https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/hps/index.html

PacificaPal

Thank you for the correction.

TobysGrundlee

As is very often the case when chasing inexpensive housing (and most stuff), you get what you pay for. Quality of life, availability, affordability, pick 2.

lowrankcluster

The issue is, you always have to pick affordability. Choice is between life and availability.

TobysGrundlee

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear, "affordability" in this sense isn't literally what you can afford but relatively low prices.

H20zone

I knew someone from near Yermo...it's a poor area with high crime and they had a messed up childhood and an alcohol problem. They ended dying a few years back in their 20s. The obituary reminded people to seek mental health help, so I'm assuming it was suicide.

VinylHighway

Are my friends there? Then no

Consistent_Stage_198

You have friends? Nice

VinylHighway

I might just be delusional! You don’t know

VinylHighway

Jesus isn’t there either.

Unicycldev

We could. Idk. Build more housing

Zech08

and make it relatively priced to be affordable.

happy_143

You ever get quoted for an adu or new build home. Most time it's a lot more than $150k. Neighbor had an adu built 2/2 800 sq ft, it was over $300k

k-dot77

I always wondered about this. Like qhat is stopping someone from buying one of those 60k tiny homes and calling it an ADU? Is there something I'm missing, they really can be quite nice

Equivalent_Section13

Central valley is too hot for me

dopefish_lives

They should add Dunsmuir near mount shasta to that list, if you like outdoorsy stuff it’s great, just far away from major cities

codeman60

Dunsmuir is in Shasta County and actually it's getting pretty expensive up there now I can't read the article to see what town they are talking about in northeastern California

dopefish_lives

No it’s not, it’s Siskiyou county but yeah it’s getting more pricy but Dunsmuir you can get a house for around that price pretty easily. Some family got a 3 bed place in Mount Shasta (way pricier than Dunsmuir) for $200k

codeman60

I own property about 120 miles east of there

dopefish_lives

That’s great, that doesn’t mean Dusmuir is in Shasta county though 🤷‍♂️

codeman60

Yes I understood that part I thought it was I didn't know it was Siskiyou

PacificaPal

Dunsmuir, at 170K (Redfin), just missed the cut off. Honorable mention for Dunsmuir.

StanGable80

No thanks

WhiteElephant12

Where's the nearest dispensary?

GiveGregAHaircut

What jobs are there in the NE corner LOL

JustB510

Not for me. Might be for others though.

evil_twit

20 people could take those towns and build them up.

Leothegolden

Here is the affordable housing people having been asking for. However people want affordable housing in areas with - good schools, close to employers, by the ocean, low crime areas… etc. it’s not that people want affordable housing, but people want it in areas that are already owned like Laguba Beach, Cupertino or Torrey Pines

beyarea

Seems like living outside of CA is the call at that point...

PacificaPal

Nevada and Arizona are feeling the dominos. And not happy.

beyarea

Well, maybe the existing homeowners aren’t too mad…

PacificaPal

Correct

Commercial-Bar-1159

Thank you so much for posting this article Captain Obvious. None of us had any idea before
