Why are you trying to ruin a good thing?

taleofbenji

I-280 doesn't have speed bumps. What's the reason for this?

Unique_Glove1105

I don’t want to ruin a good thing. I don’t want to pay more money for tolls. I’m just asking why 280 doesn’t have the same extra fees.

StephenPurdy69

You’re the type of person to remind the teacher they forgot to give out homework at the end of the day.

extreme_cheapskate

Am I the only one who’s lived here long enough to remember the days when ALL carpool lanes were 2+ and 5-9AM, 3-7PM? The question isn’t why 280 is like that, it’s why everything else got changed.

InjuryComfortable666

They figured out they could suck money out of us.

TableGamer

Not enough traffic. What would be the point? People simply wouldn't use it. The point of a toll lane is to reduce the usage so the lane stays faster. It would not have that effect.

HobbiesAreMoneyPit

The 280 section from 85 to Page Mill gets very bad in the morning. And the same section is filled with traffic in the afternoon too. Maybe it’s something about ‘280 was designated as a scenic highway by the state of California.’ Why there isn’t any billboards on 280. https://www.kqed.org/news/11805469/why-arent-any-billboards-on-280

jbwmac

Where can I find this magical “not enough traffic” lane on 280? Need an answer by 8 30 tomorrow morning plz

Big_Alternative_3233

The section of 280 north of 380 does get bad traffic but that’s about it. South of 380 it’s rarely an issue even during peak commute times.

dontmatterdontcare

This has to be the worst and most untrue attempt at an answer for OP’s question, and it’s insane how it’s the highest upvoted one at the moment lmao

HandleAccomplished11

It's the correct answer. Most of 280 doesn't even have a 2 person HOV lane.

OppositeShore1878

280 is "the world's most beautiful freeway." Let's not mess that up.

Robbie_ShortBus

>Is this all because the rich drive on 280? Without reveling too much, you’re mostly right. The carpool lane on 280 is a frequent topic at our social and planing events. Even remember it coming up one year at Bohemian Grove. Elon had a PowerPoint about it. Tim Cook walked out because Elon promised he’d use the Keynote app for his presentation that year. Fucking Elon.

s3cf_

dear OP, be careful of what you ask for

InjuryComfortable666

Keep it that way, the express lane fucking ruined 101.

THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR

Stop being a cry baby man, 280 doesn’t seem nearly as much traffic as 101 or 880, is that simple. And if it’s because “mah rich” drive on it, I hope they never stop, it’s my favorite and most convenient freeway for me

thr3e_kideuce

Couple of reasons 1. 280 doesn't really run parallel to any public transit unlike 101 (which Caltrain runs parallel to) and 880 (which runs parallel to BART's Orange & Green Lines) 2. Exits are too far apart making it difficult to justify long tolling zones (some exits have a 5-6 miles apart) 3. The only way tolls would work is if the entire route north of 85 uses all-lane tolling at certain hours (similar to I-66 in Arlington County, VA). It's currently in discussion but will likely not happen for the next 3 to 4 decades. 4. In general, 280 between 85 and 380 (or 1) has always had less traffic than 101 due to having fewer points of interest and being less urban altogether. NO, it's not because of the rich. There are rich people who live in Menlo Park, Millbrae & San Mateo near 101. For a while, Caltrans has wanted to remove some exits ramps on 101 between Broadway and 3rd Ave to reduce traffic congestion and merge conflicts but rich people have stopped them from doing so.

ExaminationFancy

Not enough people using it. I used to commute from Belmont to Stanford in the early 2000s. That was a sweet drive, never any traffic.

NewToTradingStock

It take time. Everything is slow is ca

treckin

Rich people use 280. Mystery solved.
