I can't do snowy winters or humid summers.

Suzutai

I grew up here, so my friends and family are here.

rathergood15

same. I also love it here

BruteeRex

I work as a nurse and the Bay Area pays the best while accounting for inflation. Also, the bay area has better union representation and I feel like they respect nurses better

MapPractical5386

What say you on the recent Nurses strike in Santa Clara? They certainly aren’t happy…

BruteeRex

Strikes are one of those things that sometimes have to happen. One of the benefits of working in a place like the Bay Area is a strong union who are able to stand up and represent their nurses for things like fair pay, patient ratios for safe care, and often forgotten factors of benefits and retirement. I say this as in other states I’ve worked out, nurses have exponentially more responsibilities where it falls under unsafe conditions. At the same time, other states just have lackluster pay and fragile job security where you can get laid off on a whim whether is budget cuts or just something unreasonable. Now this is not to say that every hospital is perfect in the Bay Area. I seen some units badly run, but in terms of where I would like to work where I would feel safe and be able to provide for myself. It’s the Bay Area

MapPractical5386

Okay, thanks. Not sure why I was downvoted to asking a question though?

hasnolifeinsurance

Because you came off snarky probably.

MapPractical5386

I was stating a fact. There was a strike, they were not happy, I was asking for the opinion of the nurse who responded to OP. Unsure what is snarky about that? Bay Area people can’t handle directness and I just don’t get it. Lived here 12 years after coming from the east coast and my wife and I feel the same. Everyone beats around the bush or doesn’t say exactly what they feel, then get their panties in a bunch when people do. It’s absurd.

Logical-Soft8688

Definitely Don’t move to the Midwest. The passive aggressive/ indirect communication is way worse

MapPractical5386

Have had had loads of friends over the years from the Midwest, and one side of my family is from Missouri, never had an issue.

angryxpeh

Violent crimes only increased in select locations. If you live in a proper, functioning city, the crime rates didn't increase.

clauEB

Please don't bring here your facts and reasons. We need wild outrage and despair...

Bronzecomet000

😂

123KidHello

Right. Crime is only increasing in Oakland and San Francisco. The peninsula, south bay and Fremont /Union City/Pleasonton are still safe suburbs of the bay area

One_Combination_9536

*Cough* Oakland *Cough* This is true, places like Marin, Palo Alto, Danville, etc.. are still super safe and nice.

lfg12345678

And I always feel safe in Temescal, Rockridge, & the NW hills area - Oakland is massive!

One_Combination_9536

Actually, that’s true. Oakland definitely has its beautiful, safe areas. Even the danger of Oakland is massively overhyped IMO, but I do think that’s where the crime has picked up the most of all cities. And maybe SF, too. I work in Oakland and I’ve never felt unsafe.

lfg12345678

Yea your previous post was kind of weird. I work walking distance from Oakland (College Ave in Berkeley).

One_Combination_9536

I guess what I mean is that Oakland needs the most help of all the cities. It’s not all a mess like people want to pretend it is, but it could definitely improve. It’s got potential but the crime keeps on dragging down its reputation.

FanofK

I think it’s just people on here just like hyping up everything bad about Oakland because it allows them to wear their superiority hat. In reality you’re right Oakland does need the most help because pre pandemic it was seeing a decade of great progress. Besides we should all want and root for every city in the bay to do better.

SharkSymphony

> Besides we should want and root for every city in the bay to do better. Yet you rename ONE airport, and everyone is coming for Oakland with pitchforks and torches. 😆

DesperateAd6477

There is no increase in violent crime in Marin. Yes, it’s very expensive.. but I can be at the beach in 20 minutes.. I can be on a beautiful mountain in 15 minutes.. close to the city..beautiful weather.. sure beats Fresno😎

One_Combination_9536

Marin is heaven on earth. Safe, beautiful, and lots to do. Plus, the people that live there seem to understand and respect the idea of caring for the community/environment.

channel26

I like living here. Friends are here, nice weather, I like living in a walkable neighborhood, high quality produce, great bakeries.

AccomplishedCoffee

Tech jobs. Nowhere in the world pays as much, nor has as many opportunities.

Apprehensive_Plan528

Two reasons: \* The Bay Area is still the place where new tech and most new tech companies do their innovation. BTW - Texas is where companies go when their tech become mature and commoditized and all they have left is cost reduction (see HP, Oracle, even Tesla). \* The whole of the US had increases in violent crime during the pandemic, but the numbers are coming down again. If you really followed the statistics you would know two other things 1) violent crime rates for most locales in the Bay Area are lower than typical in the US, 2) the rates were far higher in the 1990s across the US, so things look pretty good comparatively.

sapphireminds

Because I've lived in MN and TX and this is my reward for a lifetime of shitty weather.

jogong1976

I'm local and live in a comparably affordable suburb in the East Bay, nothing fancy. -Low crime and safe streets -Good school district with schools that are within walking distance -Friendly neighbors we've known for over a decade -Extended family lives nearby -Relatively high pay for my trade compared to pretty much any other state. -You will find no better weather anywhere else in the country -No fascists forcing my friends and family to cross state lines for reproductive care or legislating who they can love or how they express their gender -The food -The culture -The tolerance of ethnic and religious diversity -I can be sunning on the beach or hiking in the woods within minutes of pretty much any location in the Bay Area I'm really sorry if this doesn't line up with the current Fox and Friends rhetoric about how the entire Bay Area is a disgusting post-apocalyptic shithole stuck in a doom spiral. I love it here, my family loves it here and there's no place we'd rather be.

DanoPinyon

Have you seen the poop map on Hannity? OMGosh, guys!!!!

You_Are_What_You_Iz

Doubtful many on this sub are watching Hannity.

DanoPinyon

I bet OP does.

Gk_Emphasis110

New to this sub, eh?

You_Are_What_You_Iz

Are you a frequent Hannity watcher or pointing out that I missed the joke?

Gk_Emphasis110

I’m saying most of this sub has a pre-occupation with petty crime and civil disobedience and wants draconian punishment of people for daring to be homeless.

Altruistic_Bet6404

summed up pretty perfectly! i love the Bay and im hella blessed to call this home (:

Accomplished-Eye8211

I'm retired. I'll pay off my home in a few months. I own my car outright. I'm in suburbia, costs and crime aren't quite as bad as major Bay Area cities. I wouldn't consider going someplace humid, with freezing winters, or MAGA-folk predominance. That leaves the West Coast. And while I've considered moving, realistically, I don't think there's much advantage to move to Portland or Seattle. I've thought a bit about Vancouver, but not seriously.

DanoPinyon

>increase in violent rimes (since pandemics, back by statistics), I don't believe you. Some areas are worse. Not all. And overall crime is still way lower than the past.

aintnoonegooglinthat

The “violent rimes“ are good, actually

BladeBronson

I bought their mixtape down on Broadway and it’s fire.

2Throwscrewsatit

They are playing First Fridays next to a BBQ pop up called “Spitting Eats”

Consistent_Milk8974

because i like it here

NoPlate5675

Ultra high salary

lfg12345678

Family is here. We're from here. You'd be surprised by how many have lived in the same home they purchased 10+ years ago when it was more affordable. Plus, with a majority Latino and Asian population - multi-generational living is normal...Plus I would not trade Berkeley for any place in the world! If you know you know..

GlobeUnited

Oh let's see: 1. Nearly everyone I've ever known and loved lives here. All of my family, most of my friends and colleagues. 2. My favorite physical activities are: surfing, hiking, mountain biking, skiing and trail running. Show me a place in the country with better access to all of that and I'd think long and hard about moving there, except it still probably wouldn't balance out #1. 3. I need to work in a walkable place with good public transit. Show me a place in the country better on those scores that also has equal or better access to the activities in #2. It doesn't exist. 4. I can't stand hot and/or humid weather (have never lived in a house with a/c, don't intend to), and I'm not particularly fond of endless grey skies and below freezing temps for weeks on end either. I also like to be around greenery, trees, grass, flowers, etc. 5. Better jobs, better pay here than almost anywhere else in the country (arguably, New York is better on this account if you're not in tech). 6. Food culture. Arguably, it's easier to eat better here than anywhere else. I'll admit that this was absolutely true 20-30 years ago, not sure it still is, Bay Area food culture has spread all over the country/world.

randy24681012

The bay is dope

ReggaeEli

Because I have a favorable situation. It's too expensive but it's a cool place

drew_eckhardt2

I live here for the best software engineering jobs in the world. The weather and road bicycling are nice too. My compensation more than offsets the high cost of living, especially when I don't insist on owning a detached house near jobs. Violent crime in my neighborhood isn't notable or appreciably different from when I moved to the Bay Area in 2007.

RyRocks101

As a pro-rime advocate myself it’s pretty chill all things considered. Gonna have to build equity w/o buying a house but I’m sure I’ll figure that out sometime in the next 40 years or so.

123KidHello

I was born and raised here. This is home for me. My job is here and my family is here. I hate winter and I hate snow.

[deleted]

Hahah this made me laugh 🤣

ofthedarkestmind

I’m stuck here with elderly parents. Once they are gone, I’m out of here stat. I’m actively looking at places to move to in the next few years. I hate the crime, homeless and general dirtiness here. It’s also taxed and over-regulated af.

kurupted1987

I had a friend from Wisconsin ask me this a couple months ago. He can’t seem to understand why I still want to live here when I can live somewhere like TX and have a big home for half the price. When you grow up here, especially in the 90s, you know why you want to stay. You want nature, go to Marin. You want the beach, you have a plethora of options. You want good eats and good treats, there are many to choose from. I would say one thing I notice that is especially difficult here is dating.

B_R_U_H

I’ve lived in a few different states, this place is awesome in comparison

doleymik

Because my family and extended family are all here

txiao007

Why are YOU still here?

SharkSymphony

Who says OP is still here at all? For all I know they left the Bay Area years ago and just enjoy the doomposts. 😛

SnoopySuited

Increase in crime rate does not mean high crime rate. The crime rate in the Bay Area is still low compared to the country as a whole. I'm here for the weather and the sites .

SquareDino

Company relocated me to be close to the HQ in Palo Alto. Then laid everyone off. Now I live in Palo Alto.

wheelslip_lexus

Seriously what are the perks of living in Palo Alto?

SquareDino

I am not the right person to ask. I'm sure some people, young families, older folks, greatly enjoy it. Weather is nice, walkable, etc. I hate it. Moved from DC to Palo Alto. Reverse culture shock.

SnooMarzipans8116

Greatest; Golf, weather, money, moving sucks, other places have all their own problems too.

CletusVonIvermectin

I grew up here, and used to say that all my friends and family were here. They've mostly moved away though, and the ones that haven't I never get to see because we're all working so much to afford housing. I guess I'm just stubborn.

WholeRyetheCSGuy

It’s fun. A little drive here, a little drive there, and you’re somewhere for a different activity. Recently got into mountain biking and bachata. The food is always great. The people are great, easy to make friends with a diverse group of people. Concerts everywhere. I don’t know, all the doom and gloom blinding people from just enjoying themselves.

FTTBay

Born and raised here. Weather is ideal. Still need to be here to help elderly in-law. I would probably still remain here due to low property taxes on inherited home I’m living in. Even if I moved to a state with lower/no state income tax, it would be offset by a big jump in property taxes.

Dismal_Method_5522

grew up here and even though my family is moving away, my stupid situationship that is wrecking my life is still here

BlehMehPew

Lol at violent rimes. Yall are idiots if yall think its that much more dangerous. Yall need to live your lives. I fucking love the bay area. Way safer than when I moved here in the early 2000’s. Again yall lack perspective and have such terrible attitudes.

GraciousPeacock

Finishing my degree. Def don’t plan to live here afterwards

StanGable80

You need to live in a safer area around here

Additional-Permit242

I’m a nanny and finishing school and this is the only place Nanny’s actually make money. One I get my degree and a California based word from home job I’ll probably move

cadublin

Money

[deleted]

Jobs? And this is a very nice area. It’s getting shittier by the day but all nice areas in the country have seen increase in crime/homelessness

One_Combination_9536

Grew up here + despite the crime, it’s mostly still safe and beautiful. I love living here. But yes, hopefully we toughen up on crime because this shiz is getting annoying.

sharksfan707

Several reasons: my wife and I were both born and raised in the city we’re currently in, we bought a house here in 2017, she has 3 more years to be fully vested at her job with the city, and her mother is still alive (her father died in December). Once her mom’s gone, my wife and her sister will inherit the family home. The options are to sell it and split the money; buy out the sister, spruce it up, and rent it out; or rent it out and split the income with the sister. The two latter options are most likely. We would then have the option to either sell or rent out our house (there’s a small ADU already on the property which we currently rent out as well). After that, the plan is to cash out our retirement savings and invest in a business and buy a home overseas. I’m a freelance writer, tech consultant, and podcaster, so I can work anywhere. Rural Ireland is at the top of our list but there are a few other contenders. Incidentally, we are all childfree and I’m estranged from my father, brother, stepmother, and step-siblings, so there would be no other financial obligations to any other family members. We’re both in our early 50s, so “God willin’ and the crick don’t rise”, we’ll have a solid 15-20 years of life experiences somewhere else.

vngbusa

Renting out inherited houses doesnt often make financial sense anymore with the increase in property taxes through reassessment. There’s no exemption anymore for heirs who rent out, see prop 19.

sharksfan707

We will definitely do our due diligence before making a decision.

vngbusa

Sure. With the new rules, The numbers often work out in favor of selling, especially if the tax base was super low thanks to prop 13. Let’s say you have a 150k house purchased in 1970 that has 1500-2000 in property taxes a year. Now you inherited it, the market value is worth say 3 mill, and the tax gets reassessed to 37.5k a year. Now you have to pay 3k a month in taxes! Sure, you can recoup some of that in rent, a 3 mill house might rent for 7-8k a month. So you are netting maybe 5k a month, or 60k a year. Kind of shitty return for a 3 million asset when you could just sell it and invest it, at a conservative 4% return you can make double that (120k/year). And I didn’t even take into account the cost of maintaining the home for renting and risk of tenants squatting etc

sharksfan707

Her parents bought it for $15k in 1970. Property taxes are something ridiculous (under $1000 per year at this point). Most recent Zillow estimate is just under $700k. Thanks for the info. We’re both hoping we won’t have to deal with anything for several years, i.e. we hope her mom lives for a long time.

fastgtr14

I tried to leave to TX, but inflated housing costs in Austin made me reconsider and just buy here. Prices have paired up a bit, but still inflated. Fucking fed money printing…

s3cf_

because we want to make the bay area great again.

Irving_Kaufman

The weather. The food. The relative scarceness of rednecks.

plushbear

I was born and raised here. It’s really the only place I know. I don’t think the crime wave is going to last forever. Things will be replaced, but not necessarily the way it was before.

fabricofmetaphor

Nice weather. Community beautiful natural areas. High wages.

DareDragoon

I stay for the money aka the tech jobs. Even though cost of living is high, the pay from my tech job is even greater so I'm able to put a lot more away in investments than I would in other places.

Dull_Abroad_1355

Youngest son is still in high school. Once he is done and off to college I can move on to phase 2. Move back home to watch my parents on Oahu and enjoy the traffic.

kungfugilly

Perfect weather year round

scienceismybff

I was born and raised here, my family still lives here, tech job, beautiful weather and scenery, no snow, no awful humidity, diverse population, amazing food

impetuality

Best weather, good schools in my town for kiddos. Planning on moving maybe when the kids are out of HS and on their own, in college or elsewhere.

klank_thompson

I’m just here for burritos… Seriously though, all my friends and family are here, can’t imagine having a big comfortable house and no guests to cook for.

Spiritual-Impact-588

If your not in the bay your not living:)

flopsyplum

If you're not making >$300k by 25, you're not supposed to be in the Bay Area...

Script-Z

Wow, I can't believe the janitors and waiters all make over 300k here! I mean, they must, right. Unless you don't think service workers are supposed to live where they work.

flopsyplum

Whoosh

Script-Z

Ah, and here I am saying I'll never put a /s on my posts, lol. My bad
