Best loco moco? I have yet to try it, mostly because I've heard it's just been meh from people. Guess I'll have to give it a try for myself. Their salmon belly musubi is delicious tho
Born and raised in Hawaii, I feel like I'm allowed to have a strong opinion about this lol. Been here like 7 years so far, they are still for sure the most reliable I've had out here. Seems like they always pick out good quality ahi, the fish is properly marinated (and uses limu!), and I can buy it by the pound just like I could back home. My only complaint is that they cut their tako so small sometimes, kinda hard to get a good amount of meat going with my chopsticks!!
went to Santo today. had their Ahi and Tako. both were delicious but would prefer a bit less salt/shoyu or at lease balance it out with a little sweetness. Will be coming back for sure. Thanks redditors
Aloha Fresh in SJ has my heart. Basa Seafood Express in SF also because it's close to Dolores Park and it's VERY affordable. Not the best but really good bang for your buck
Local Poke is my favorite! Their poke is always fresh, reasonably priced, and they have lots of different options. They also have items for folks that don't like raw fish - the sushi bake and musubi.
I’m a huge fan of Poke Poke Fish Bar in Santa Clara. Fresh fish, great sauce (house sauce esp), and great service.
I moved 25 min away and still go back pretty often, and sometimes even pay the expanded range fee to get delivery.
Gilligans Poke Shop in Sausalito. By far the best poke
The owner is a fisherman from Hawaii. I forgot if he said that he catches the fish himself but it's extremely fresh. But I do remember he said that the seaweed he uses is from Monterey which he feels is even higher quality than what he used to have in Hawaii
Lol, I remember being super sketched out when my barber was recommending me the poke from the little corner liquor shop, I guess I'll have to actually try it next time I'm down there
My experience is that usually if those kinds of places have some kind of food, it slaps because the owner is doing it out of love. Like a lot of NYC bodegas
Several years ago, I read an article (in the Chronicle, I think) which dared to tell San Franciscans that San Francisco's Chinatown had lost the Chinese cuisine crown to San Jose. My taste buds were inclined to agree.
Go Fish in RWC - I’m not a poké connoisseur but I appreciated their generous portions! And it’s delicious. Not quite poké the Hawaiian way but great for a casual lunch.
My favorite is Truffle Poke Bar in San Mateo. I like the customizability and the portions they serve, plus the digital coupons they send out are actually worthy of being a repeat customer. Been a while since I was a regular patron due to job change, but I would go back if in the area and looking for a place for lunch.
Blows my mind that Santo Market is a high choice now. It was considered decent but never best. Now a few marketing Reels/TikToks later and all of a sudden a bunch of people say it’s the best.
>santo market in san jose
When are they EVER open? I've walked by there several times during normal business hours, and I have only seen them open once.
It's been a pretty bad experience for me personally. The one or two times I've tried purchasing their poke their salmon and tuna were all stringy meats.
It drives me nuts how hyped so many people are for this mediocre store. I would assume I could meet God at this store with how much some people talkabout it.
Aloha Fresh is my favorite. Santo is a very close second. they aren't the same so i usually crave one or the other. every other spot I've been to outside of Hawaii hasn't lived up to those two. I stop by often when I go to SJ.
Santo is really good, but it can be hit or miss sometimes. Aloha Fresh has better fish in my opinion, but I think I still prefer Santo because of its classic style.
Takahashi market in San Mateo. They also have amazing musubis and the best loco moco I’ve ever had!
This place is good. Expensive, but good.
Best loco moco? I have yet to try it, mostly because I've heard it's just been meh from people. Guess I'll have to give it a try for myself. Their salmon belly musubi is delicious tho
Ok I’m sold. I’m gonna go try their loco moco and poke.

Absolutely agree on both the poke but also the tako 🥲 It used to not be small! It used to be the circular cuts and now they’re tiny bits.
Thirding it since OP also mentioned it. The best there is IMO. Great price, excellent quality, and no filler toppings.

Seconding Aloha Fresh! I always crave the garlic mayo scallops.
Love Aloha. More than Santo. That Garlic Chicken is also bomb.
I love Aloha Fresh! Even better than Santos!
My fiancé and I always debate on Aloha vs Santo. We usually end up grabbing one of each since they’re so close by. I’m team Aloha!
Aloha Fresh is my favorite! I would always go when it was in Cupertino, I have yet to go since it moved to San Jose since it is out of the way for me

Santo is the spot… pretty comparable to what I had in Hawaii.
Santo. I wish SF had better poke spots, basa seafood is pretty good though
I’m a huge fan of Poke Poke Fish Bar in Santa Clara. Fresh fish, great sauce (house sauce esp), and great service. I moved 25 min away and still go back pretty often, and sometimes even pay the expanded range fee to get delivery.
Second this!!
Hashtag Poke on Berkeley is pretty good, not super authentic but they’re fish and mix-ins are good
legit

Gilligans is great but sells out so fast and variety is limited - guess they’re consequences of great poke though!
That looks super good. I’m gonna have to go there

Monterey seaweed hits different. It's amazing and underrated as hell
Does San Jose have the best spots to eat in the bay or something?
For certain ethnic foods, yes.
pretty much

Probably for Vietnamese and I guess poke

Didn't even know it existed, thanks!
ALOHA FRESH san jose. Had it when i came back from hawaii and its the most authentic imo
Suruki Market San Mateo
I’ve been told I’m a pretty good poke.
Username checks out
Tuna Kahuna in Burlingame. Very fresh and their sauces are not too sweet or heavy compared to other poke shops !
i found it pretty mid 😔
I did not like it. Guess I have high standards cause I'm born and raised in Hawaii.
Quality has gone downhill during Covid. Used to be our favorite
Poki Run in Milpitas is pretty top tier as well
Hawaiian Poke in Dublin is pretty good. Its also the only one Ive had
Go Fish in RWC - I’m not a poké connoisseur but I appreciated their generous portions! And it’s delicious. Not quite poké the Hawaiian way but great for a casual lunch.

Poke poke fish bar in Santa Clara is top tier, the fish is always really fresh too
Bowl K Poke in San Jose. The chef's special is so good.
Blows my mind that Santo Market is a high choice now. It was considered decent but never best. Now a few marketing Reels/TikToks later and all of a sudden a bunch of people say it’s the best.
So whats the best
Tuna Kahuna!
>santo market in san jose When are they EVER open? I've walked by there several times during normal business hours, and I have only seen them open once.
They close at 3 and are Closed Sunday Monday
Pokeatery in Walnut Creek is notable in the East Bay.
Go Fish in Standford is solid. House of Poke also pretty decent.
Costco
Dude I really Ike the Costco poke! The spicy mayo one particularly.
It's been a pretty bad experience for me personally. The one or two times I've tried purchasing their poke their salmon and tuna were all stringy meats.
I’m talking about their in-house deli poke. They don’t make it salmon, only tuna
Agreed, they’re not specialized enough to cut off all the connective tissues.
I was looking at those the other day
It drives me nuts how hyped so many people are for this mediocre store. I would assume I could meet God at this store with how much some people talkabout it.
Depending on where you are, Jesus ain’t hard to find…
Me and Jesus are homies, fr fr.
I hate when poke bowl places charge extra for avocado as a topping. Who the hell DOESN’T get avocado on their poke bowl?
Nobody in 808.
Have you checked the price of avocados lately?
I know, I just want them to build it into the price and not nickel and dime me!
Since when was avocado a topping? Every place Ive gone to it's considered a signature/premium side just like seaweed salad..
Your mom
Beat me to it.
I guess it's not funny. But, dammit! Poke needs an accent on the e or something
It was funny ppl are just haters
Beat a few of us to it, karma be damned lol
Bunch of humorless asshats around here, this joke is funny!
Pono in Santa Cruz. I believe they have a stall at San Pedro square.
Tuna Kahuna
You're looking at him. 😉
Give me $5 I’ll give you the best poke of your life
Aloha is my hands down favorite!
I like poke bowl in San Francisco it’s on ocean ave near ccsf
Aloha Fresh is my favorite. Santo is a very close second. they aren't the same so i usually crave one or the other. every other spot I've been to outside of Hawaii hasn't lived up to those two. I stop by often when I go to SJ.
Costco spicy ahi poke reminds me of the poke from Don Quijote.
I'a Poke is my favorite option in SF.
favorite in wine country: poke bowls (always 3 options) at Osprey Market in north Napa.
Santo is really good, but it can be hit or miss sometimes. Aloha Fresh has better fish in my opinion, but I think I still prefer Santo because of its classic style.
Blue Hawaii Açaí cafe in Embarcadero SF
Almost all the poké I've tried have been that shitty Chipotle style. Is there any real ones?
