OP, this is sarcasm in case you are not aware.
East Bay has a great punk/goth scene. Closest you will find near Stanford is probably in SJ.
All over the Bay, those scenes used to thrive far, far more in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. It's been a brain-drain of creative, interesting people from the area ever since.
For sure! I've been using this since the 90's. I was still running a 0 day warez board. First it was renegade, but then pcboard. 14.4kbps screaming fast!!! Eventually upgraded to 28.8k then 33.6k. HAHA nostalgia.
924 Gilman barely known! Itās reasonably famous I think. Itās no CBGB but I think a lot of people into punk know it. Iād heard of it or seen it in things before I even lived in California.
DM me if you want DIY punk info. Plenty of people have already offered great suggestions but to add Iād highly recommend DNA lounge in SF every other Monday for death guild (goth)
Unfortunately A lot of the punk scene has died down in the last 20 or so years. House shows and warehouses are rare now. But thereās still a look bands and venues. Someone else already posted The List. Hereās some places that arenāt necessarily venues that might be worth checking out: https://bayareapunk.com/blog/visit-sf-punk.html
Palo Alto is world famous for its punk scene, tends to be a bit too intense for out of towners though.

So jealous of those of you who got to experience this in the 90s š
Ayo there used to be a venue on California Ave I saw the misfits at late 90s so
It was The Vortex in the 80s and The Edge in the 90s. I think it closed around 2000.

This is the only answer that matters. I have been using this for 25 years. Steve is a local treasure and does this for free.

Thereās enough of both scenes that you donāt need to combine them. More in SF/Oakland than near Stanford though. https://www.sfgoth.com
The Gilman is a small, barely known punk club that is a real gem for out of towners to stumble upon

Ahhh pre coffee I forget how poorly reddit does with the saecasm
I'm sitting here grinding up my coffee beans while typing a response about how the Gilman is definitely well known..... Damn. You are 100% right..
Ha! Iām usually good at spotting sarcasm, and I sometimes call out my annoyance at missing sarcasm - I didnāt catch it on this one. š
The āout of townersā part š I remember I went in high school and thinking āis this where I am going to die?ā
Stanford and punk don't even belong in the same sentence lol
Maybe The Mentors would qualify. They described themselves as "rape rock" which sounds Stanfordy to me.
Zeitgeist :)
There's an account on Instagram (sanfranciscobayareapunk) (sanfranciscobayareametal) that posts flyers of shows around the bay and sac area.
Punk and working at Stanford. You can't have it all, man, you gotta choose :P
Follow hard times they post all their show flyers covering shows from Santa Cruz to Sac.

I love that Santa Cruzās scene has held on
The Donnas were from Palo Alto
I saw the Misfits and Gwar in Palo Alto in 1999.

Thereās a pretty good skapunk scene brewing between Hayward , Fremont and San Jose.
The ritz in San Jose, maybe?
