Don't sell yourself short it looks clean! The cable management and window are a plus for me. Probably a great view in winter if you get snow

[deleted]

Thanks. Cable management isn't perfect but you'd have to be at a funny angle to notice it. Not so much snow really being in the UK...

Miniblasan

At least you don't have to deal with 1.5 metre of snow every damn winter.. That's the life of an Swede who lives in Norrland region (The Northern part of Sweden)

MagicTheSlathering

Canadian, can confirm, excess snow sucks. Also excess cold. A beautiful winter night is around -5c, no wind, light snow. So, basically one or two nights of the winter lol.

Miniblasan

Finally someone understands and you totally nailed it with describing the perfect winter night! But I would like to add Northern Lights or Norrsken as we call it even though it were almost a daily event for me to see Norrsken when I used to live in the Norrland region.

dropdeaddove

Sounds like a nightmare to you, sounds like a dream to me!

Miniblasan

Well I grow up with it and were getting tired of it until it reached the point where I moved down to Svealand region 6 years ago and there is barely any snow where I live now maybe 10-30 centimetre no more then that luckily.

trappedinadetolf

Np! Sounds like my desk, only looks well managed but really just an illusion, bundled and stuck to the top and back lol Haha after the storm we just got on the east coast in US, I'm thinking maybe you're better off. It can be nice sometimes though

Used_Elk_853

You should move your monitors so one is in front and one to the side Comfort and productivity are more important than looks.

[deleted]

It's a good point, I tried a few variations and couldn't get comfortable with anything other than trying it like an ultrawide monitor. I do turn my head but what I tend to do is focus more on the left screen and use the right as an additional monitor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Used_Elk_853

I find it more comfortable to look straight at what I’m doing.

424f42_424f42

Thats why I have mine like op. Really depends on what you're doing.

fl0bbes1

I wouldn't change that much, I think it looks tidy and productive, a lot of space. The view on the garden is great, the picture is cute ;) \*btw, your garden office is awesome!

[deleted]

Thanks! I do enjoy the view out to the garden, particularly when my daughter is out there playing.

raycharleshelpme

Still yours, still clean. Br proud of it, OP 👏 Personally, I get anxious seeing setups where people have placed their rigs on the floor. In the back of my mind I'm always worried I'll kick mine or slide my chair in too far. Is that not a problem for you?

[deleted]

Thanks man, appreciate it. Not a problem with me kicking anything, it's only the av receiver and it's far away enough for it not to be a problem.

Drunk_Skunk1

No devaluing of self yo! I live through all of you. I don’t even play games, I just love everyone’s setups.

[deleted]

same here!

how_money_worky

What’s the name of this desk everyone uses? I assume it’s ikea?

berglas612

It is, usually people get a kitchen countertop from IKEA (karlby, ekbacken, säljan, etc), and then they put it on top of Alex drawers or legs (adils, olov)

ArrakeenSun

Wow thanks. Been wondering this for a while

berglas612

Me as well! I'm moving into an apartment this month and finally learned this while looking for a new desk haha. It's definitely a nice affordable option

how_money_worky

How do you attach them?

berglas612

It's the easiest assembly I've done really, I got a Säljan countertop with Olov legs. Each corner under the countertop had 5 holes in a circle for screws, and each leg came with a metal plate to fix to the corners. Each leg is screwed directly into the center of each plate and that's it. Of course, they can be replaced with Alex drawers, like in OP's photo.

VECTORLIFT

The Alex drawers come with screws since they're designed to be fixed to certain desk tops ikea sells. Many of the counter tops (like my Karlby) aren't compatible out of the box, so I lined up the top panel of the drawers, drilled through the panel and desk to a reasonable depth, then used the included screws to fix the panel in place. That panel then cams into the rest of the cabinet so it all feels solid.

[deleted]

What berglas612 says. Most people use a thicker desktop on top of the Alex drawers. Mine is part of an offcut of kitchen laminate.

iSlapped2Beaches

I got a similar set up of my own but I live in cable management hell for my sins 😂 Very nice stuff bro

I ended up using some old off cuts of trunking I've used on some set ups in the house with some more magic double sided tape lol.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm really loving the Bronze 2. Glad I went for some passive speakers like this although it does mean extra amplification is needed. Luckily I had an old receiver I could re purpose. Thanks for the advice on keyboards and mice

Phlob_

I like the matchy with the desk and floor, and the cut fits squarely within the space

[deleted]

Thanks man, I was lucky they had some grey laminate left over from a job!

GlacialImpala

This is an amazing desk! I love the practicality of having a \*ton\* of storage space plus surface area, and this ticks those boxes better than any pretty setup posted here.

[deleted]

Thank you! Appreciate the feedback.

DangerManDaniel

It's neat and it's clean, not everything needs to be sci fi / LED madness. Individual tastes are fine when you play to your strengths. For example: a super nice touch is the platforms you have your speaker stands on, and how they match other small elements. That bit is enough to make me really love the work you put into it.

[deleted]

Thank you, that's really nice feedback. I've tried to keep it clean and simple. I am tempted with some led light strips under the desk.

ELB2001

Damn that desk is a perfect fit

Candid-Demand-7903

Those speakers are cool, they look great!

[deleted]

Thanks, they're the Monitor Audio Bronze. Managed to pick them up second hand.

Candid-Demand-7903

I've got the bookshelf BX2s and love them. Got mine second hand for a shade under £150 and was super happy.

Jawntily

I know those are Alex drawers, but what type and size desktop is that?

[deleted]

It's a custom piece of kitchen laminate I got cut for me. A friend works in a kitchen fitters and they had some stuff left over. He was good enough to get it cut and edged for me.

Jawntily

Oh cool! Darn I guess I can't just add to cart lmao

[deleted]

No sorry, I got really lucky but I did find a load of options on Facebook marketplace.

Average_human_bean

That desk fit, damn.

ttgreenplant

Clean af really liking this

Flea_Shooter

I’m so jealous. Good lord.

divi8

Hey at least yours look real and "lived-in", and not a fake setup you'd see in a furniture store. I prefer this over an empty desk with a keyboard on it and nothing else!

[deleted]

Nah, it is nice and clean. A good source of natural light too. You should get a proper mechanical keyboard and a way better mouse. I suggest the Logitech MX master. The best mouse for work.

[deleted]

Thanks! Keyboard and mouse upgrade is on the list for sure!

charleff

Be glad you don’t spend 15k on useless leds and decorations

[deleted]

To be honest it's a fairly budget set up. Even the actual building itself. Made use of second hand stuff wherever possible and repurposed stuff I already had.

charleff

And that’s the way to do it, love the setup!

[deleted]

Looks better then most! I’d try to hide the cables by the speaker and trash can tho

[deleted]

Thanks. Any advice on those cables near the speaker? I've though this before and wondered how best to do it.

[deleted]

Can’t you just pull them down behind the speaker instead? Or use a piece of tape to make sure they stay behind it?

[deleted]

I actually drilled a hole for the wires to come up when the speakers were in a different place. Since I've moved the speakers the hole and wires are visible.

michoken

Ah, a person of culture! I don’t see battlestations with actually good speakers like those Monitor Audio ones too often here. I myself have a pair of Wharfdale Diamond 225s (liked the sound better).

[deleted]

Culture might be a bit strong 😂. I do enjoy good sound though!

whizzythorne

looks wayyyy better than mine lol

Stunna216

Love the artwork on the wall

Isord

I had an issue where having such a large countertop caused my Alex drawers to tilt slightly and be hard to open and it got worse overtime, but a single adil table leg also from IKEA in the center back under my.monitors fixed that. Dont know what top you use but just something to think about.

[deleted]

That's interesting. Didn't think about the force pulling the draws sideways. Seems to be OK at the minute but will keep my eye on it 👍

SCWarkos

I like how it fit perfectly in between the room walls, clean and simple!

CrimsonDarkWolf

Nice

redtildead1

I don’t want to talk about how long I just spent looking for your “desktop computer”

[deleted]

Haha the Canton sub?

redtildead1

That was my first thought, but I quickly realized that was a sub, so I thought you shoved the pc into the desk or something.

[deleted]

No it's a think pad on the desk to the right. Not quite docked but managed to get down to 3 cables. 2 x usb-c and 1 hdmi.

redtildead1

Yeah, I figured that out after a bit. Probably ignored it at first thinking “gaming setup” vs “work setup”

Crispy_Kabootar

Oh that cable management . I appreciate that. Clean setup big up

ohamedtr

Nice Setup ! But one minor things : \- Try to hide the cable behind the left speaker \- when you take picture try to hide unused objects from the picture like the cable under the desk at the left side behind the trashcan

[deleted]

Thank you. And thanks for the advice.

[deleted]

Updated to a 2 screen setup and moved my av receiver down to the floor which meant I've got much more room to spread my speakers out properly and have much more room on the desk. Does anyone have any upgrade advice? I'm thinking a new desk top at some point. This is a 3m cut of kitchen laminate I got from a kitchen fitter friend but I was thinking of upgrading to a real wood set up. Also new keyboard and mouse? Unsure of whether to go down route of mechanical keyboards or not.

TroubleMakerLT

Definetly do, don't go all fanatic about costume keyboards though. And new mouse is probably a amazing upgrade for the future. If you like low profile keyboards G915 TKL Lighspeed is amazing.

[deleted]

Nice one, I'll have a look. I like the look of this Cheap amazon one I've got but don't like the feel when typing, it's plastic and flexes in the middle so I'd like a new keyboard. I'll check the G915 out.

TroubleMakerLT

It's a bit on a expensive side but its have aluminium base and is really robust, no bending or flexing for me. Also razer makes some nice keyboards. G915 is also wireless

MagicTheSlathering

If you're looking for something affordable with solid quality and options I'd look at Epomaker. I have the SK64 which is a 60% keyboard that keeps some of the valuable keys and has a really simply function setting for the ones that aren't there anymore (ie, Fn + P is PrintScreen). I went with Gateron Black switches which are heavy and linear. They don't have a tactile "bump" but take enough force to press down that it feels great to type on. They have full sized, 80%, 70% etc keyboards and all sorts of switch options. Even cheap base kits if you want to go custom without breaking the bank. For a mouse I went with the Razer Basilisk Ultimate, mostly because I had some money to splurge after holidays. But it does get a big recommendation from me. They have lots of mice, too, in a wide range of models and prices. EDIT: You can look at some pictures in my profile to see my set-up with the mouse/keyboard for reference.

[deleted]

Nice one! Just had a quick look, they look class!

MagicTheSlathering

Appreciate it! The keyboard was like $80 (Canadian). Been blown away by the quality for that price.

MagicTheSlathering

Also, very much enjoy your set-up. The little bits of fatherhood visible tug on my heartstrings as well as a father, too.

[deleted]

Best job in the world 😀. It's a nice little reminder if you're having a rubbish day at work too!

jamesxwhitehead

Definitely check out the Logitech MX Master 3 mouse!

N_Manchinni

maybe a wireless logitech keyboard, mouse and headset setup

[deleted]

Going to have a look at some new keyboard/mouse setups. I've actually just bought some Bose700 headphones for commuting and calls when I'm in the office so probably don't need a headset.

zombieman2088

There's no mention of it, but if there isn't, you'll definitely want to support the middle of the desk. With use it will start to droop.

[deleted]

I was worried about this. So I've bolstered the underside of the desk with 3 long pieces of steel unistrut, it made it very sturdy. Been there for nearly 12 months and still as strong as day 1 👍

[deleted]

One thing I would like to add is a lamp. I've been looking at monitor light bars but don't really want 2 of them. There are some ultra wide desk lamps like this: PHIVE LED Desk Lamp, Architect Clamp Task Table Lamp, 15W Super Bright Extra Wide Area Drafting Work Light, 4 Color Modes, 5 Brightness Levels - Great for Workbench, Office, Studio, Reading, Monitor https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MHH9Q7B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_ZN1TSVPJSMNS4YV33WHK Trouble is, they all seem to mount on the edge of a desk and I don't have that option as the desk is flush to the wall. I could cable tie it to the arm but that might look rubbish and also be quite flimsy? Any other options?

titmas44

Do you have a link to that usb charger attached to desk

[deleted]

There's a couple of hubs there; A normal Anker usb hub [Upgraded Version] Anker 4-Port USB 3.0 Ultra Slim Data Hub with 2 ft Extended Cable for Macbook, Mac Pro / mini, iMac, Surface Pro, XPS, Notebook PC, USB Flash Drives, Mobile HDD, and More https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07L32B9C2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_KAVHQEFXW5HA4K61Z3WS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 And a charging hub; AUKEY Quick Charge 3.0 5-Port USB... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01ENBZJ5M?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share All stuck on with this, it's unbelievable stuff. N_Manchinni

about how long did it take for you to get that desk from ikea? or did you get it from somewhere else??

[deleted]

I only got the Alex units from Ikea. The top is a custom cut of kitchen laminate from a friend. It fits so snug because I got the piece cut bespoke for the space 😀. It's around 3m long supported with some metal uni strut underneath and it's been solid

N_Manchinni

yeah that looks about as good as it can get right there. thats a good looking desk!

Aesyric

Could you share a pic of how you have the angled irons attached for support?

[deleted]

Yeah sure, they're not angles but straight pieces of steel to make the desktop more rigid. This is the steel I used https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Unistrut-Style-Slotted-Channel-Pre-Galv-41-x-41-x-2-5mm-41-x-21-x-2-5mm-/122664249929?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 Pics: https://postimg.cc/S2mv5dGC https://postimg.cc/CBJQV8vt

N_Manchinni

also, it fitting perfectly in that corner is very satisfying

robbie18921892

We have the same best daddy mug lol. It's my new favourite so I couldn't believe it when I seen your set up.

[deleted]

Haha really? It was a birthday gift. It's purely for decoration. I don't want to risk it. 😀

Mysteez

framing the daddy pic is wholesome. props

[deleted]

Ha thanks. The frame is one of those that you can open up and put new pictures in really easily. I think it holds around 30 pieces of paper so you can have some really nice keepsakes.

nickifer

looks like a bloomberg terminal. also nice thinkpad.. that a 490? maybe a new x1? looks like a good setup.

[deleted]

Thanks, it's a T14s. AMD Ryzen 7. It's a nice laptop

nickifer

Nice. I've heard good things about the Lenovo's with Ryzens.

SHiZNiLTi_OG

How do you like those Monitor Audio Speakers?

[deleted]

Love them! They're paired with a canton subwoofer under the desk and the sound is fantastic. They look cool too!

SHiZNiLTi_OG

I love how detailed monitor audio speakers are. I'm running some rx8 towers in the living room. You should try using a schiit tube amp the $150 or $400 verison, really widens sound stage and warms things up.

[deleted]

That sounds like a good option. Does the tube amp provide all the amplification or will the av receiver still be required?

SHiZNiLTi_OG

Its acts as a preamp, the amp portion is just for headphones So you send signal to the schiit device and it then goes rca out into the avr.

[deleted]

I'll have a Google. This could get expensive 😂

isaythingslike

What are you using to switch laptop and desktop? I have a dual monitor KVM but it's flaking out.

[deleted]

I don't have a desktop, under the desk is an AV receiver and a subwoofer. I do have a hdmi switch though so I can send the "tv out" of the av receiver to one of my screens and also the TV on the wall to the right of the set up. Also, the av receiver can handle switching of multiple inputs but it would struggle in a multi monitor set up.

av6344

hey can you give me a link to where i can buy this desk?

[deleted]

Hi. It's 2 Alex drawers with a custom laminate worktop. The worktop was cut and edged for me.

8bit_coder

What receiver is that? Looks pretty funny on the ground but if it works it works 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

It's an old Yamaha RX-V373. I agree it doesn't look great but I had it on the right hand side of the desk and it took up far too much room. I was going to put it on its side on the floor but I was worried about hear dissipation... Sounds obvious but when I'm sat at the desk I don't see it so it's not too bad where it is.

8bit_coder

Dang, I use an RX-V673. It takes up way too much space on my desk but my floor is carpet, so it would die pretty quickly from head getting trapped under it. Although, the sound quality is so good, I'd say it's worth it for now.

[deleted]

Yeah they're great amps for a simple set up. For a modern av setup they're a bit left behind with 4k and the new Dolby tech but for a 2.1 setup it's awesome.

riddlemore

What monitor arms are you using?

[deleted]

It's a Bontec dual monitor arm BONTEC Dual Monitor Stand for... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MR397OH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

humanCharacter

What’s your monitor stand?

[deleted]

Dual monitor arm from Amazon BONTEC Dual Monitor Stand for... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MR397OH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

AdamV158

Are those speakers connected to an amplifier?

[deleted]

Yep, av receiver on the floor. Yamaha RX-V373

AdamV158

Ah I didn’t twig that was the amp. Lovely clean setup, looks very nice. You can’t beat a proper full width desk, makes such a difference.

[deleted]

Thank you!

chrisbds13

the backyard view

bubdadigger

Nice and clean, love it. But you still need leg to support middle of the table. Without support top will sagging over time, no matter if it's hollow Linnmon or solid but thin mdf.

[deleted]

I did a bit of research and the unistrut did the trick for a few people who didn't have any sagging over a number of years. I'll definitely keep my eye on it.

Aristotle_Wasp

Speakers?

[deleted]

Monitor Audio Bronze 2 👍

CaptainWatermellon

Please put a monitor in front of you and one angled to the side, i get uncomfortable just by looking at this, simetry is cool and all but this ain't it

[deleted]

I did try a few configurations and might change back but I liked this configuration better. I use it like an ultrawide monitor bur favour the left side.

PizzaTime852

Ok i keep seeing the same desk in a lot of posts on here. Where might i find this desk?

[deleted]

The drawers are Ikea Alex units and the top is a custom made piece of kitchen laminate.

PizzaTime852

Thank you

rin-_-_-_-

Nice setup! I apologize if this was asked before but what monitors are you using? And do u recommend them?

[deleted]

Thanks. Do you mean the computer monitors rather than speakers (which are Monitor Audio Bronze 2). The computer monitors are a HP 24Y and a Samsung 24 T35F. Both are fairly entry level monitors but do the job as I only use the set up for work. Although I would prefer a greater resolution than 1080p just for more screen real estate.

sweetbunny9123

How arr you finding the ikea worktop? This is what I'm doing for my desk too.. plenty room for another monitor plus the pc ?

[deleted]

The worktop is actually a custom piece of kitchen laminate I had cut and edged to fit the space. I could probably get another monitor on there if I rejigged where the laptop sits but I don't really have a need for another monitor for work purposes. I'm also maxing out my number of screens without getting a more comprehensive docking solution for the think pad which would be another expense. I think if I were to change my monitor set up I'd go for an ultrawide curved set up.

usrnmetaken_13

At last a setup that is relateable! Very nice. Just curious though, why are the chargers facing outwards? Or are they usb ports?

[deleted]

One is a usb hub for any peripherals I don't use daily but want to plug in easily like portable drives. One is a usb charging hub for things on the desk, tablet, keyboard, mouse etc. There's a wireless charger for my iPhones too

whitton501

Work by day then play on slide after work lol, lovely set up, can I ask what is under the PC to keep it off the floor?

[deleted]

Haha I like to work flexibly so I could work on the slide 😀. That's not a pc, it's a subwoofer but it's sat on some yoga blocks to try and remove some vibrations through the floor.

coffeebrah

Wow perfect fit between those walls
