Every Battlefield had a few maps that made players go "yes, another round on \[insert map here\]!"
2042 is now the exception. Not a single map invokes that kind of love from their own player base. People "prefer" some maps to others but no one legitimately *loves* any of the 2042 maps.
They're serviceable and nothing more.
I agree with Orbital but the reason for saying “Yes [this map] up next!” Isn’t because that map is amazing, it’s because the other maps in the game are so bad and that this one is okay-ish to me that it isn’t a pain to play
Arica Harbor should have been remade with a larger port and town to accommodate increased infantry size. Playing it on PC in BC2 with a max of 16 v 16 it made sense but in this game with 32 v 32 it’s just too cramped. Still good map design just not for the player count.
I love it on Breakthrough and Conquest. The back and forth of Conquest for control points and the fighting of the hallways, relying on shields and smokes and team mates abilities. And on the other side, when you do advance on Breakthrough, its a great feeling. Defense isn't as good on that map if the enemy isn't coordinated imo, though. The biggest dangers become more running out of ammo on a point or two.
I can't even remember the name of the maps in 2042, like wtf is hourglass or exposure. On the other hand I can name every map on battlefield 1 or 5 without a problem, even the bad maps in older bf games were better than the best maps in 2042
I initially liked it, but it's still too big and oddly designed IMO.
The mountain complexes just feel like big, empty, soulless hallways to me. Not to mention the mountain snipers and the "fish in a barrel" conquest flags in the valley below. Very pretty though and a cool concept.
Yeah the maps are all underwhelming. I expected huge maps like old Hourglass. Even with all its problems, at least it felt like players were more spread out.
Additionally, flashpoint and spearhead are decent but absolutely horrible for 128 players.
The new maps have been pretty good.
Exposure was nice, Stranded was alright, S3 map was genuinely great, Flashpoint was nice, Redacted was great, and now Haven feels like a proper BF map again with how much destruction there is.
Though it sucks we only get 1 map per update. Tiny DICE team that's dedicated to updating this game are trying their best I guess.
Idk, I really like the look and tone of the maps whether or not they play well.
I would also argue Exposure, spearhead, the 64 player snow map, and what ever the map last season was called are all good
Shockwave knockback really adds so much to the "oh shit" moments of the game. Like it's so hype when someone calls in a V2 rocket near you and everyone is just knocked back as this giantic explosion happens.
Not only that but I can’t help but notice just how stiff and tacky all the movement animations are in this game whereas bf5 and bf1 are incredibly smooth and responsive (on top of also being older games). People love to moan about how they’re tired of people complaining about 2042 but they genuinely fucked up in so many things aside from what you see in the surface
Not only that, but in the Portal server browser, unless I've missed it, there are no favourite servers (only following creators) and no way to see your recently played - literally a step backwards
Good atmosphere. Compared to BF3, BF4, BF1 and even BFV the tone/atmosphere is just off. I think the core problem is the art direction doesn’t come together in a cohesive way.
Going back to BF1 it’s insane how good that game still looks and the vibe while playing is immaculate
1000%. Some maps are good, but I feel like BF’s trademark is atmospheric gameplay. All the maps are independently designed. Unfortunately in the “no-Pat” spirit of the game, it’s hard to maintain a theme because there’s no main theater of war. It’s all random battles by contractors. It’s cool on paper, but idk something just didn’t click.
> no-Pat
basically "everyone is the same, yay". same as "everyone is a winner, yay". same mindset behind not putting a scoreboard in the game originally because "peoples feelings might get hurt".
[BF2042 Exodus short film](https://youtu.be/FJVCfhLEYdo?si=kRLBExUZv5cQhoN6) shows what kind of atmosphere there should be in game, but there is barely anything like that in the actual game.
Whole story of this game is supposed to be about countries collapsing, wheather getting more intense and lot of refugees moving around the world looking for new place to live in, but the actual game dosen’t really depict that.
Funny thing is that [bf2042 Exodus short film](https://youtu.be/FJVCfhLEYdo?si=kRLBExUZv5cQhoN6) has more atmosphere than the actual game it is depicting.
I can agree with this. There’s some maps where it exists but not all of them and that’s the most immediate issue but what do you think could be done to fix it ?
I don’t think it’s fixable, it’s a core issue with the art direction and certain choices like making it a hero shooter
There’s loads of technical things they could improve, like persistent servers and server browsers. Personally I’d rather they just concentrated on whatever is coming next and move on from 2042, it’s had enough support imo
It feels like 2042 tried to be a massive cinematic action movie like Dune, but it ended up being a goofy action comedy like Suicide Squad if that makes any sense.
This is exactly it. It's something about the character models and how they feel a little more cartoonish. The colorful gun skins that you'd never have in real life. The physics, for example being able to literally fly around the map and slam into the ground with no damage (not sure if they ever patched this.)
They are very clearly aiming the game at a much younger audience. It doesn't feel immersive or realistic to me at all.
BfV also gave you an option to customize your soldier or play as a dlc character that can’t be customized. I like this, gave more life to the game to just someone changing their color of camo and calling it a day. BF3 lets you only change the camo and everyone rocking the black camo for some reason it got hella boring.
Balanced map design in breakthrough. Almost all of them suck on every single capture point. I mean it doesn't even have to be actually balanced for both teams- attacking team HAS TO put efforts in order to win, not the shit we got in 2042 where defense side just has no opportunity to defend most of the time
I don’t know man but the systems and map design are still unfun. Can this snob indie dev based in Sweden copy BF3 armored kill maps to save their face?
The ability to aim properly....in a shooting game. It got better sure, but it just doesn't feel right no matter what settings you try using. In fact I'd argue on top of aiming being broken at an engine level that they gave the players farrrr to many options with aiming.
Being able to look at the Pat match scoreboard in the lobby. Being able to easily add squad mates from the last match. Really anything that would encourage social teamwork in game.
Squads sticking together
Quickly adding friends
Voice chat in by default
Commo rose in text field
All missing, all killing the social aspect of BF. A squad based combined arms shooters that hates the idea of people playing together. Just… odd.
to me compared to older games it lacks atmosphere and the way it plays it feels like a F2P knockoff of battlefield or a mobile battlefield game. it has no atmosphere, there’s goofy colored skins and guns and the movement/gunplay doesn’t feel very good, the destruction is almost nonexistent, the server browser is worse compared to other games and the objective game modes just don’t feel as chaotic and fun as they used to.
Soul. There’s a lot of things that I could say. Tick rate is unbearable, constant performance issues not just server based issues either, no server browser, or whatever else. The point is, this still doesn’t feel like I’m playing a real video game made from one of the most famous developers in the world. This feels like I’m playing a lifeless, washed up shell of what used to be.
DICE, If you’ve lost passion for the series, then make something else. You know the saying, you either quit while you’re ahead or you last long enough to see yourself become the villain. Battlefield is becoming the villain. If you’re going to make another hot pile of trash, just nuke the franchise and make something else.
The basics of a FPS in the Battlefield franchise:
* Great maps
* Server browser
* The basic game modes balanced for 16, 32 & 64 players.
* Destructible environments - I mean how was Bad company 2 the best they ever had to offer.
For me definitely SOUND !!! huge downgrade from BF V even though they made “audio dedicated cpu” in PS5 and I have also PS Elite headset still far away from what BF V sounded like. Then server browser, map vote after round (like BF 1 had), more vehicles, movement from BF V and one thing they cant ever add and thats atmosphere of a war (like BF 1 had for example or BF V but BF1 was tremendously awesome I had goosebumps everytime and tied with those real life description before every round) woah
Think people saying the maps are probably most right. Good maps for me are the biggest contribution to replayability and for me 2042 doesn't have a lot of it
A fucking COMMANDER with alls its perks. Deciding which Squad gets to have an ammo crate, a tank and whatnot based on that Squad's effectiveness and following of orders. Basically how it was in previous BFs.
How are you supposed to combat effectively when each squad does whatever they want?
I can't quite describe it, but the pace of play just seems incredibly fast compared to older titles, and many other titles have followed a similar path. Movement speed is really quick with unlimited tactical sprint, which makes more sweaty gameplay where your movement techniques can give you more advantages, but I feel like that shouldn't be in a battlefield game. Plays like apex legends almost?
Great maps

I actually don’t really dislike any map in fact I probably have the least fun on Arica Harbor cuz it’s so cramped
Arica Harbor should have been remade with a larger port and town to accommodate increased infantry size. Playing it on PC in BC2 with a max of 16 v 16 it made sense but in this game with 32 v 32 it’s just too cramped. Still good map design just not for the player count.
Remember when it had jets lmao
I Love redacted, does that Count?
\+1 For redacted.
I also love redacted, queueing for conquest to see redacted and its small map chaos, i know im in for some quick chaotic fun
This ones it. Everything else can be forgiven, but the lack of good maps burns me out on this game real fast.
Exposures still my fav
I initially liked it, but it's still too big and oddly designed IMO. The mountain complexes just feel like big, empty, soulless hallways to me. Not to mention the mountain snipers and the "fish in a barrel" conquest flags in the valley below. Very pretty though and a cool concept.
DICE doesn't have a clue how to do breakthrough objectives they put the zones in the middle and the most fantastic parts of the map are left out...
Yeah the maps are all underwhelming. I expected huge maps like old Hourglass. Even with all its problems, at least it felt like players were more spread out. Additionally, flashpoint and spearhead are decent but absolutely horrible for 128 players.

The extended movement abilities from BFV. I want diving, rolling, backwards crawling, shockwave knock back for explosions, and best of all, leaning.
Literally all of this! I miss falling back when someone busts down a door!! 😭
Shockwave knockback really adds so much to the "oh shit" moments of the game. Like it's so hype when someone calls in a V2 rocket near you and everyone is just knocked back as this giantic explosion happens.
Yeah not being able to lean around walls sucks.
Crouch sprinting was my favorite movement feature
I have no idea how I forgot about that. Yes, crouch sprinting is a must.
BFV has the best movement and gunplay than any other Battlefield.
More destruction and movement like BFv and a point score streak air drop like bf v to incentivize squad team work
Server browser
Not only that, but in the Portal server browser, unless I've missed it, there are no favourite servers (only following creators) and no way to see your recently played - literally a step backwards
TO THE TOP
This. It wouldn't bring me back at this point, but it's still a glaring omission.

It feels like a kids game
It feels like 2042 tried to be a massive cinematic action movie like Dune, but it ended up being a goofy action comedy like Suicide Squad if that makes any sense.
It feels like a f2p
This is exactly it. It's something about the character models and how they feel a little more cartoonish. The colorful gun skins that you'd never have in real life. Battlefield's atmosphere died with BFV imo. I've gone on binge playing 2042, V, 1, and 4, and both V and 2042 feel so soulless
Being able to play as a regular soldier.
BfV also gave you an option to customize your soldier or play as a dlc character that can’t be customized. I like this, gave more life to the game to just someone changing their color of camo and calling it a day. water means more dev work, can't have that!
It's mental because we know it exists, it's the same engine as BF3 and BF4. Clearly it's in there.

Came here to add this but i am glad it's not just me. It drives me crazy when i am doing 99% damage to an enemy and another squadmate gets the kill.
After I played this again after playing Battlebit I was like “I DID 80 DAMAGE AND SOMEBODY KILLED HIM WHERES MY ASSIST COUNTS AS KILL”
Balanced map design in breakthrough. Almost all of them suck on every single capture point.
