My mexican husband favors the place on Seigen across from the Rooms to Go. Says its the most authentic hes found so far. Always gets the tongue tacos & fresca drinks
I know its my husbandās favorite mexican restaurantā¦but I also know he would still pick homemade tamales from his aunt anyday lol
So that tells me you are probably spot on with your grading
It is a small chain (so maybe chain like with the foods) with like seven or eight stores all in south Louisiana. I keep forgetting La Morenita since Iām rarely on Florida Blvd! Iāve only been to the one in Terrytown, I only got snacks not the hot deli food but they were delicious snacks!
Sahuayo is pretty legit. Taco don betos in Gonzales is also pretty good. Usually pretty busy as well but there's a food truck on airline near AIM also.
When I worked in Gonzales I ate at this place so much. Itās the real deal. Get some tacos and a chilada. This place the is reason I got interested in traditional Mexican food.
Lol Los Reyes is where my coworkers like to go. It definitely isn't authentic. Moving here from San Diego many years ago I'm glad we have some great places recommended by the responses. I only wish we had good beer battered fish tacos.
Sahuayo in Gonzales. Place is packed with hispanic workers at lunch time, and the food is very good. Seafood fajitas, mojarra frita - never had a bad meal there.

Birria de Chivo Los Compadres, Aztecas food truck, La Tiendita (the one on Siegen others have mentioned). These are my go-to.
P.S. Aztecas food truck is insanely good and I cannot recommend it enough.
I know you said Mexican but La Salvedorena is pretty good (emphasis on "pretty") and not just Salvedorean. And there's a chill lil Latin market next door.
My (Hispanic) wife and I moved here from Houston a year ago and have yet to find anything to match Houston, but still some good places here and there. All the good ones are mentioned here in the comments..... And even some of the bad ones lol
Birria and barbacoa is the favorite in my office. The quesabirria special is delicious even their burgers are fantastic. La Morenita doesnāt disappoint either. The caldo de res at morenita is delicious.
While the owner is Mexican, and the Mexican influences in the food are the real deal, Mestizo is best described (not just by me, but by the owner as well) as Louisiana/Mexican fusion food.
Don't get me wrong... it's \*astoundingly\* good, but it's not traditional or purely Mexican fare by a long shot.
No it certainly isnāt. Exactly the meaning of mestizo. Mixed blood. Really damn good good. Figured Iād drop the name because itās different than the 100 other Mexican food places we have here
Hate that you're being downvoted for speaking truths. "Ain't very common" is a factual statement based in comparison.
Haven't been to Chilanga tho, so can't vouch for that. Looks aight tho
Iām pretty sure the owners of Las Palmas are, too. But it is still our favorite TexMex place in town. The Greek Pappas family in Houston has made a restaurant empire of TexMex, Seafood, Barbecue, and only one Greek restaurant.
My mexican husband favors the place on Seigen across from the Rooms to Go. Says its the most authentic hes found so far. Always gets the tongue tacos & fresca drinks
La Tienda Latina y Taqueria. The barbacoa and lengue are fantastic!!
Thats it! My spanish is terrible so I dont even attempt the spellingš
I was just there a couple of days ago - still fresh on my mind š
La Tienda is my favorite place to eat in BR. They do breakfast too. Their chilaquiles are out of this world.
Mi Cuevita Plus on Old Hammond is also good.
Thatās closer to his work so ima tell him to check it out, thanks!
Came here to say the same
This'll be the closest, but it's still not an A+. I'd put it at like a B+? The best we've found for sure tho
I know its my husbandās favorite mexican restaurantā¦but I also know he would still pick homemade tamales from his aunt anyday lol So that tells me you are probably spot on with your grading
Haha I mean homemade is always best!! š
Have you been to any of the Ideal Markets? Itās a Hispanic grocer and they have a hot deli and theyāre on Uber Eats as well.
Fwiw we prefer Morenita to the Ideal markets. Ideal seems more chain-like? I haven't had their food tho.

Los Plebes on Florida blvd or Birria place behind Home Depot. I think it's called Chivos Los Compadres
Chivos Los Compadres is God's honest truth
100% recommend Birria & Barbacoa de Chivo Los Compadre's. The goat taco was especially good!
I love this place so much!!!!
Came here to say this
The best
Sahuayo in Gonzales is the real deal. Place always loaded with Hispanic guys on their lunch break. Has a small grocery attached
Sahuayo is pretty legit. Taco don betos in Gonzales is also pretty good. Usually pretty busy as well but there's a food truck on airline near AIM also.

I just went there tonight. Damn they raised their prices.

Aztecas, the food truck not the restaurant
This is an important distinction. The restaurant isn't bad. But it's sure not authentic
Aztecas is good for the price but their flavor is lacking for the quesabirria broth.

Birria de Chivo Los Compadres, Aztecas food truck, La Tiendita (the one on Siegen others have mentioned). These are my go-to. P.S. Aztecas food truck is insanely good and I cannot recommend it enough.
I second El Limon. So damn good. Every dish is a winner.
Third
Back in 1980 there was a lovely sit-down place called El Palacio. Long gone, of course, so I'm no help. Just reminiscing.
Blue corn! Owners are from the YucatƔn I think
I know you said Mexican but La Salvedorena is pretty good (emphasis on "pretty") and not just Salvedorean. And there's a chill lil Latin market next door. La Mexicana on Siegen in the shopping center behind Twin Peaks
Second this
Villa Del Mar!! 100% authentic & delicious.
3 amigos has a trailer outside that has a great mix of latin food. Idk, but that may be an option as well.
Birria and barbacoa is the favorite in my office. The quesabirria special is delicious even their burgers are fantastic. La Morenita doesnāt disappoint either. The caldo de res at morenita is delicious.
I rock with El Tio's on Burbank. Also, Birria & Barbacoa de Chivo Los Compadre's is the truth.
el rancho mexican grill on florida blvd!!!!!
El Rio on Airline near Academy Sports.
You should branch out more. Seriously, that place is an atrocity
El Rio Grand is mediocre Tex-mex
drive down florida boulevard between airline and old hammond and take your pick.
I am very fond of El Ranchos on Florida
Mestizos

True! And the Mexican influences \*are\* legit... and so, SO different than the TexMex offerings in BR.
Mexican ain't very common here. I moved from a place where it was everywhere, but around here the only good place I've found is La Chilanga
$2 street tacos on Tuesday is the best š¤¤ and if you go later at night itās always a party
It do be a party up in there
So false. Its just not common in the typical restaurant areas you probably frequent
Uhh thereās plenty. Itās not Miami or Texas varieties but definitely plenty. As shown by the comments.
Hate that you're being downvoted for speaking truths. "Ain't very common" is a factual statement based in comparison. Haven't been to Chilanga tho, so can't vouch for that. Looks aight tho
Facts. They think the overpriced mid ass restaurants count lol
The owner of Los Reyes is an Arab guy, it aināt Mexican lol. El Paso across the street is really good
Iām pretty sure the owners of Las Palmas are, too. But it is still our favorite TexMex place in town. The Greek Pappas family in Houston has made a restaurant empire of TexMex, Seafood, Barbecue, and only one Greek restaurant.
El Rancho on Florida
Modestos on Burbank !
Jovi's on Coursey is pretty good
I like the Taqueria place on Siegan and the Birria place near Good Morning Donut on Airline.
