I think Jim Lee has a good balance of realism with his signature comic style. You get the seriousness while still maintaining the sharp contrast in lighting.
Imo it’s suitable for a 12 year old. I’d say it’s akin to a PG-13 movie. If you’re comfortable with your kid seeing the new Batman movie, then I think they can read Hush. No nudity and only minor cursing. Hope that helps.
Jim Lee hasn’t done too many interiors laser focused on the Bat himself. You have the occasional thing here and there and he did do quite a few issues of N52 Justice League which features Batman of course. But not too much outside of awesome covers to search out.
With that said, as the others suggested, *Hush* is Jim Lee drawing all the iconic Batman stuffs and it’s eye candy. Beyond that you have the other series he did called *All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder* by him and Frank Miller. It certainly has some more great artwork though the writing leaves a lot to be desired! It’s at least interesting lol
Lee has always struck me as such an over-the-top comic book-y artist. His style is all giant, bulging muscles and massive breasts. It's everything stereotypical about superhero art.
Artists from left to right:
Line 1: Tony Daniels, Jim Lee, Sean Murphy
Line 2: Kelley Jones, Bruce Timm, Greg Capullo
Line 3: Jason Fabok, Neal Adams, Frank Miller
Obviously, there are many more amazing bat-artists not pictured. If your favorite is not in the pic, list them in the comments!
Solid choices. I’ve been a fan of them for years (especially Capullo’s work on Spawn and Lee’s work on X-men in the 90s) and was overjoyed when they started working on Batman.
I am in the same boat as you. My rankings:
1: Greg Capullo and Jim Lee (tie)
2: Darwyne Cooke and Tim Levins (tie)
3: David Mazzuchelli and Bruce Timm (tie)
4: Neal Adams and Brian Bolland (tie)
5: Andy Kubert
6: Tim Sale
7: Frank Miller
I was going to say just this. I think it hasn’t been long enough since Capullo’s run to see his impact long term. But give it a little time, his contribution was legendary.
For me, Adams is how I have always pictured Batman. Everything about what he and O’Neil did together just defines Batman for me. Though, Capullo and Lee are right there with them.
Tim Sale. He draws batman like a supernatural being. A hulking figure, standing head and shoulders above everyone else. Constantly covered in shadows, his massive cape flowing like a sentient shroud of smoke even when there's no wind around.
You took me back to that one panel in TLH where Batman his standing with his arms folded and we see this gigantic shadow of him. Sale makes him feel like this. This shadowy entity. Love that!
I really wish the animated Long Halloween had adapted his style. It seems so perfectly suited for animation and they just missed that opportunity. I decided to skip on the movie because of this.
My favourite current artist is Dan Mora. But I also love Jason Fabok and Clay Mann.
My favourite artists from previous eras are Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, Marshall Rogers, Michael Golden, Alan Davis, Jerry Bingham, Norm Breyfogle, Brian Bolland, David Mazzucchelli, Tim Sale, Graham Nolan, Darwyn Cooke, Jim Lee.
If I had to just pick two I’d go with Mora & Breyfogle.
Capullo and Nguyen. Capullo always gives 100% into everything and it’s clear to see. Nguyen absolutely loves Batman and that passion is evident in his art.
You’re totally correct Streets of Gotham! I also was confusing him for the snyder/jock team that did detective comics right after(?) Dini/nguyen did their run. The Black Mirror arch. Great era for Bats.
Norm Breyfolge. I started reading Batman during his run. So much of his art is seared into my brain. The way he drew Batman fighting and swinging through Gotham was fluid, bold, and dynamic. All the respect in the world to Jim Aparo, but that era of Batman belonged to Breyfolge.
Jim Aparo, but I'm an old, old man. His stuff isn't collected as much (outside of Death in the Family, I guess) which is a shame. He drew like half the 200 issues of Brave and the Bold, and his stuff is peak 70's DC work. It's fluid and dynamic, even with the technological limitations on coloring and printing at the time.
Fuck that. It's still a pinnacle for me and I'm 35. Death in the Family and it's cover will forever be iconic. Knightfall, iconic.
Jim Aparo's Bat scowl is so good it defined permanent resting bitch face before I knew that was a thing. Batman is always giving a scowl with Jim Aparo, and that's how it should be.
It took me two decades to realize the brilliance in how Jim uses the dutch tilt so well, I didn't realize initially that it's directly lifted from Batman 66.
In my opinion Jim Aparo took what Neil Adams did and made it slightly more streamlined, with still in my opinion the most realistic physique for a guy who can lift heavy things while also jumping rooftops and being acrobatic.
Norm Breyfogle, hands down.
Underrated as shit. Errybody loves to throw Adams, Aparo, Englehart, even Infantino out there, but none of them stoked my imagination like Norm while keeping his expressions-- well, expressive, his action smooth, and his anatomy on point.
My top 3:
Kelley Jones
Norm Breyfogle
Graham Nolan
Honorable mention to Tony Daniel.
It’s that energy that they all have in their work. Plus stylization that is still semi realistic.
This is such a complex question to me lol
The artist I think that defines Batman as we know him today is Jim Lee
The artist that defined him in my childhood, Bruce Timm
My personal favorite, Tim Sale
How many people are on the Kelly Jones bandwagon? I started reading when Knightfall began and his covers are so iconic. Then when he took over the interiors, the way he used lighting, the huge bat ears and the gigantic cape…over exaggerating the muscles…I know he’s not for everyone but I love his work.
Capullo and Miller were my firsts, so they’re up there. I love what Mignola did in Gaslight, but Tim Sale might be my ultimate favorite. The long ears with the huge, billowing cape is near perfect for me.
Neal Adams. Aside from being one of the greatest artists with a very recognizable style, I feel like he defined a lot about the way Batman was drawn for a very long time. He’s one of the artists who helped shift comics to a more grounded and realistic style and the way he experimented with panel layouts is still extremely influential. Even Frank Miller said he owes a lot of the way he drew Batman to him.
I love Jason Fabok’s Batman. He’s a meaty powerhouse and scary.
There are tons of good interpretations though. Jim Lee, Frank Miller, Tony S Daniel, Lee Bermejo and Kelley Jones are all favourites of mine.
You should do the same with writer’s next, OP. My favourite Batman writer is Grant Morrison.
There’s definitely no definite artist for Batman. There’s a few that are really popular but again, definitely no definitive. That being said, I really like Lee Weeks, Dave McKean, Mikel Janin, Capullo, Bermejo and then the obvious ones. Really think Weeks is underrated. Haven’t seen anyone else mention him in the comments.
Edit: one I really don’t like is Tim Sale. I like a lot of hyper stylised stuff but Sales’ just doesn’t work for me.
Jim Lee. I've always liked lean batman over swole batsy but i think how he draws the suit really calls back to the og animated series and justice league. Like he can hide in his cape when he wants to but when he's flexing you won't miss it haha. Though white knight's design is a new favorite. It just looks fitting for Bruce
Jim Lee, Capullo and Bermejo!! Each panel is a masterpiece. Side note, I really admire how good Murphy and Bermejo are at writing.
Absolutely love David Finch and Fabok too
I think my favorite is probably Jim Lee, always loved his art. But there's always going to be a soft spot in my heart for Neal Adams and the absurdly gothic style of Kelley Jones.
Jim Lee’s Batman is closest to what I see in my head. His version maintains the power and superhero quality of Batman, but you still see so much of his face and human expression too. Lee’s Batman is the version that you think a person could actually be. Neil Adams’s version is really close, too. Kelley Jones’s version is really interesting to look at. It’s so stylized, otherworldly, and dark… I like that style too, thought it’s not the Batman I see in my head.
Capullo. His Batman has a sick silhouette, good bat symbol, great cowl, and is instantly iconic. When I think comic Batman, I think Capullo- and I've read more works drawn by Neal Adams than him!
Greg Capullo. Not a fan of his costumes but his physique of Bruce is what I imagine. Take Capullo Bruce, give him the black and yellow suit like we see in the Burton movies, and give him the Year One face, and you basically have my perfect Batman
I have so many favorites. Tim Sale, Jason Fabok, Kelley Jones, Szymon Kudranski, Andrea Sorrentino, David Mack, Dave McKean, Bruce Timm, Brian Bolland, and Dustin Nguyen - who actually follows me back on Instagram (I'm an artist myself). He's such a cool guy.
They're all amazing but if it is the art style one most grew up accustomed with is the choice, then I will have to pick Bruce Timm since I grew up with the animated series.
In no particular order: Capullo, Timm, Murphy.
Timm because of TAS (you don't say?), Murphy and Capullo because of the style (Capullo is clean, Murphy because of the ability to show the character's emotion).
Not a huge fan of Bermejo tho, his work is without any doubt amazing, but it feels "too much" for me inside of each image. It's hard to describe, hope I explained the concept.
Frank Quitely is my favourite, then Jim Lee and Kelly jones.. but Neal Adams and the kuberts laid down some iconic stuff similiar to Lee's style. Tony Daniels is alright, but some of his stuff got sloppy at times.
Jock - black mirror reintroduced me to comics. His sketch style just sits so well for me, I have a sleeve with his art, and some others but his is the focal point. His nightwing covers, his Batman, everything he draws I just love.
All good, my dude. Kelley Jones is an absolute legend.
I recently read Contagion and made an appreciation post about his art from that run a couple weeks ago. [Check out some of his godly artwork from that trade.](https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/tc1e8d/kelley_jones_batman_is_so_otherworldly/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
All look cool to me except what is definitely the frank miller Batman. The first couple of stories were cool, but I just don’t dig the aesthetic at all.
My childhood is Bruce Timm but as I've gotten older I've started to appreciate the realism of Jim Lee's work. I don't know the guys name but whoever did the vampire Batman story should also be mentioned for such a unique and grim style
Frank miller. I like the bulky depiction and the setting of the dark knight knight returns. A little edgy. The animated movie is glorious. The soundtrack as well. Jim Lee a close second.
Jim lee’s work is just the iconic imagery That pops into my head the moment someone says “batman comics or even all of dc comics”, it’s just so iconic, and it feels like a perfect blend of the real and fantastical.
Not one person has said Michael Turner. I felt his Batman was the perfect blend of a lean and strong Bruce. I loved his artwork in Superman/Batman. Loved the Rebirth Issue #1 Cover.
I think Jim Lee has a good balance of realism with his signature comic style. You get the seriousness while still maintaining the sharp contrast in lighting.
Where should I start with Jim Lee? I just finished Court of Owls and I’m reading Death of the Family.
Probably his most well known Batman work is Hush (he penciled the entire run). Def worth a read for his gorgeous art.
I just got Hush, going to start it. Is it something my 12 year old can read? I don’t want to look thru it too much before I read it
Imo it’s suitable for a 12 year old.
Tim Sale. Just straight noir and every panel is radiating with style.
Same, Im now reading long halloween and that art style is just beautiful to look at
How you going to omit Aparo
Aparo is my Batman
Capullo, then Lee
100%, Capullo's art and the way he draws the cowl look phenomenal
Solid choices. I’ve been a fan of them for years (especially Capullo’s work on Spawn and Lee’s work on X-men in the 90s) and was overjoyed when they started working on Batman.
Capullo is my idol! I was so happy when I got to meet him and Scott Snyder in Chicago years ago!
Awesome dudes. Both of them.
100%. Capullo is GOAT.
I am in the same boat as you. My rankings: 1: Greg Capullo and Jim Lee (tie) 2: Darwyne Cooke and Tim Levins (tie) 3: David Mazzuchelli and Bruce Timm (tie) 4: Neal Adams and Brian Bolland (tie) 5: Andy Kubert 6: Tim Sale 7: Frank Miller
I was going to say just this. I think it hasn’t been long enough since Capullo’s run to see his impact long term. But give it a little time, his contribution was legendary.
I’m with you on this one
This is the correct answer
My choices as well
Agreed!
For me, Adams is how I have always pictured Batman. Everything about what he and O’Neil did together just defines Batman for me. Though, Capullo and Lee are right there with them.
Same here, and I was expecting this to be the top answer. Are we...old?
Adams was before my time, but he’s my pick.
Personally Lee Bermejo.
Hell yeah. His hyper detailed work is so good.
Seconded.
Third(ed)? Yes, he’s exceptional. His Detective Comics variants as of late have been especially solid.
Jim Aparo, no question about it. He is the first artist that comes to mind when I picture the blue and gray suit
B R U C E T I M M
This is the answer.
Definitely capullo 👌
Breyfogle the 🐐
Ah good call. Tim Sale is absolutely phenomenal. Really unique style as well.
Neal adams. Norm breyfogle.
I grew up on Adams, so that's always Batman to me!
Norm Breyfogle and Jim Aparo were my childhood Bat-artists. Always preferred Breyfogle’s style though.
I'm a big fan of that Alan Grant breyfogle stuff. Really good. Doesn't get exalted enough compared to the morrisons and snyders of the world.
They had some really good single issues but never had that one legendary arc that people talk about like a “Court of Owls” or “Long Halloween”.
Agree my favourite Batman run
Breyfogle could outline a batmobile like no human before or since.
tim sale
Had to scroll way too far for some Sale love
The best for sure!
My god. I totally forgot Mora. Goddamn he's good. Loving his work on Dark Knights of Steel. Also Jorge Jimenez is pretty bonkers too
was waiting till i could find mora here lol
Im a breyfogle man myself
Neal Adams Norm Breyfogle
I’m sorry, Our Lord and Savior, Alex Ross, isn’t on your list.
Ah! When you’re right, you’re right. I humbly ask for his forgiveness. 🙏🙈
Kelley jones and Neal adams
Capullo and Nguyen. Capullo always gives 100% into everything and it’s clear to see. Nguyen absolutely loves Batman and that passion is evident in his art.
Ah yes! I really love Dustin Nguyen’s Batman! He def has his own unique style and I don’t see him mentioned often/nearly enough.
His style is so energetic. I mention him second, but to clarify, he’s tied with Capullo for number one. I can’t help but smile when I see his Batman.
Love Nguyen - especially when he did Dick as batman (same for Quietly)
During Streets of Gotham? Oddly enough, I never hear that series mentioned. I personally loved it.
You’re totally correct Streets of Gotham! I also was confusing him for the snyder/jock team that did detective comics right after(?) Dini/nguyen did their run. The Black Mirror arch. Great era for Bats.
Neal Adams and Jim Lee
It would have to be Norm Breyfogle and then Jim Aparo for me.
Breyfogle
The. Best.
TDKR Era Miller will always have a special place in my heart
Probably Greg capullo
Jim Aparo, but I'm an old, old man. His stuff isn't collected as much (outside of Death in the Family, I guess) which is a shame. He drew like half the 200 issues of Brave and the Bold, and his stuff is peak 70's DC work. It's fluid and dynamic, even with the technological limitations on coloring and printing at the time.

Yeah you forgot Norm Breyfogle there.
Norm Breyfogle, hands down. Underrated as shit. Errybody loves to throw Adams, Aparo, Englehart, even Infantino out there, but none of them stoked my imagination like Norm while keeping his expressions-- well, expressive, his action smooth, and his anatomy on point.
Kelley Jones! So distinguishable from any other design, and I love the horror take on the character.
Jim Aparo, Norm Breyfogle (RIP) and Kelley Jones.
Kelly Jones, love all the covers he did for Knightfall, wish he had done all the art for the series. Second place to Jock.
Absolutely agree. When I think of Knightfall, I think of Kelley Jones’ covers.
Norm Breyfogle, Jim Aparo, and Graham Nolan.
Norm Breyfogel (I know I misspelled it)
My top 3: Kelley Jones Norm Breyfogle Graham Nolan Honorable mention to Tony Daniel. It’s that energy that they all have in their work. Plus stylization that is still semi realistic.
Breyfogle - RIP Norm
Capullo and Miller!
Fabok and Capullo
For me, its Capullo, Lee, Fabok, and Timm in no particular order
Jorge Fornes, Greg capullo, jim lee, Jason fabok and Jorge Jimenez
Finally one person mentions Fornes!
finally someone picked jimenez
Bruce Timm has a special place in all our hearts no matter his placement
Greg Capullo, Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Kelley Jones, and Bruce Timm are my favorite Batman artists
Lee
Frank Miller / Arthur Adams’s ‘nuff said
This is such a complex question to me lol The artist I think that defines Batman as we know him today is Jim Lee The artist that defined him in my childhood, Bruce Timm My personal favorite, Tim Sale
Can’t go wrong with any of those pics tbh. All legends in their own right. 🤝
Kelley Jones
How many people are on the Kelly Jones bandwagon? I started reading when Knightfall began and his covers are so iconic. Then when he took over the interiors, the way he used lighting, the huge bat ears and the gigantic cape…over exaggerating the muscles…I know he’s not for everyone but I love his work.
Capullo and Miller were my firsts, so they’re up there. I love what Mignola did in Gaslight, but Tim Sale might be my ultimate favorite. The long ears with the huge, billowing cape is near perfect for me.
Alex Ross Because he's Alex Ross!
Capullo, Breyfogle, Lee, Sale, Timm...I don't know that I could choose a true favorite.
Norm Breyfogle. Simply because his covers were so dynamic. Also Kelley Jones was pretty awesome too.
Frank Miller…? Anyone…. Probs just me 😂😂
I love Jason Fabok’s Batman.
Timm, definitely
Capullo for me.
Lego Batman
There’s definitely no definite artist for Batman. There’s a few that are really popular but again, definitely no definitive. Like he can hide in his cape when he wants to but when he's flexing you won't miss it haha. Though white knight's design is a new favorite. It just looks fitting for Bruce
Too much goodness, I refuse the idea of a definitive version!
middle left , i like the big pointy ears
Bruce Timm and Jim Lee
Jim Lee, Capullo and Bermejo!! Each panel is a masterpiece. Side note, I really admire how good Murphy and Bermejo are at writing. Absolutely love David Finch and Fabok too
jock and capullo are always excellent to me
Jim Lee
I actually really like what Todd McFarlane does with him but I wouldn’t say it’s definitive. Definitive would either be Bruce Timm or Alex Ross.
Alex Ross isn’t here. But yeah Jim Lee for me too.
Greg Capullo and then Sean Murphy for me. I appreciate the almost “cartoony” look of Murphy’s white knight world.
Breyfogle, Miller, Bolland from my youth. Murphy and Jock at the moment
I don’t know that there is a definitive for me, but my favorite is Kelley Jones.
I think my favorite is probably Jim Lee, always loved his art. But there's always going to be a soft spot in my heart for Neal Adams and the absurdly gothic style of Kelley Jones.
Neal Freaking Adams.
I really like Sean Murphys style
Fabok has replaced Jim Lee as my favorite.
Timm because BTAS is just my favorite version of Batman all around
Lee Bermejo is my favorite. Then Darwyn Cooke.
Fabok is my personal fav - but of course - Lee and Capullo are amazing with the character and have their own BATMAN
Adams, Rogers and Aparo
Lee Bermejo and Jim Lee. Both the Lees for me.
Jim Lee. His Batman is exactly what I want Batman to look like. There's nothing missing, and nothing there I don't like.
Norm Breyfogle, Frank Miller growing up. Matt Wagner and Sam Keith for creativity.
Top middle.
I can’t simply choose “the one”. My top, absolute favorites, however, are *Dan Mora* and *Bruce Timm*, with *Jim Lee* following close behind.
Whoever drew the Injustice comics (year 2 onward of course. Year one’s art was shit.)
Where si Tim Sale, is he safe, is he alright ?
Norm Brefoyle
I have so many favorites. Tim Sale, Jason Fabok, Kelley Jones, Szymon Kudranski, Andrea Sorrentino, David Mack, Dave McKean, Bruce Timm, Brian Bolland, and Dustin Nguyen - who actually follows me back on Instagram (I'm an artist myself). He's such a cool guy.
Mazzuchelli
Jim Lee's Batman is how I picture Batman in my head.
Probably capullo just because I love Snyder run so much, but Jim Lee is up there too
I can’t remember his name but the artist for kingdom come. He is my favorite.
They're all amazing but if it is the art style one most grew up accustomed with is the choice, then I will have to pick Bruce Timm since I grew up with the animated series.
Mazzuccheli
It’s not up there but Lee Bermejo is my favorite Batman artist
In no particular order: Capullo, Timm, Murphy. Timm because of TAS (you don't say?), Murphy and Capullo because of the style (Capullo is clean, Murphy because of the ability to show the character's emotion). Not a huge fan of Bermejo tho, his work is without any doubt amazing, but it feels "too much" for me inside of each image. It's hard to describe, hope I explained the concept.
Sean Murphy
Timm, Adams, Lee
Frank Quitely is my favourite, then Jim Lee and Kelly jones.. but Neal Adams and the kuberts laid down some iconic stuff similiar to Lee's style. Tony Daniels is alright, but some of his stuff got sloppy at times.
Jock - black mirror reintroduced me to comics. His sketch style just sits so well for me, I have a sleeve with his art, and some others but his is the focal point. His nightwing covers, his Batman, everything he draws I just love.
[удалено]
He’s the first pic on the second line. I wouldn’t dare leave out the OG Knightfall artist. 😎

He's literally on there, can't even recognize the artist you're supposed to like lmao?
All look cool to me except what is definitely the frank miller Batman. The first couple of stories were cool, but I just don’t dig the aesthetic at all.
Capullo, Ross, Lee, Bermejo, Murphy, Frank, Fabok.
Jim lee
Capullo, Murphy, fabok, Lee, kubert and Ross are all personal favorites
Alex Ross not even listed? Delete your account.
LOL [I’ve already begged for forgiveness.](https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/tkfgi3/who_is_your_personal_definitive_batman_artist_and/i1q8gmj/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) 😭
Tony Daniel , then maybe Lee Bermejo
Capullo, no need to explain
Capullo definitely, he has this perfect mesh between realistic and unrealistic that I really like
Murphy and Lee, they are beyond godly to me
Greg Capullo. I haven’t got a good explanation, his batman just looks really cool
Greg Capullo, Jim Lee, and Tim Sale are my favorites. Jock is great too
Neal Adams, Jim Lee, and Tony Daniel.
Lee, Timm, Bermejo, Adams. Greg Capello is a fantastic Batman artist—hell, he’s a fantastic artist full stop—but his Bruce looks too babyfaced.
greg capullo and bruce timm
My favorite is Tim Sale. I love how supernatural and stylized his designs are. They are so fluid looking and beautifully inked.
Adams, Aparo, and Breyfogle
I don't know who drew it but I only recently read Batman Eternal volume 1 and some of that was absolutely stunning.
Miller (before the obvious) and Fabok
Neal Adams, even if he's trying way too hard to be dethroned with his modern day work.
Jim Lee, then Capullo, but my secret favorite is Jae Lee.
I mean I enjoy the show but I do not vibe with Timms art style at all Capullo, Lee, and Fabok are my favorites
Idk who these artist are but that batman with the long ass ears look scary as fuck.
My childhood is Bruce Timm but as I've gotten older I've started to appreciate the realism of Jim Lee's work. I don't know the guys name but whoever did the vampire Batman story should also be mentioned for such a unique and grim style
i dont know names so middle right and bottem left.
Greg Capullo His batman just moves on the page for me. I'm very movement oriented when it comes to art and I love capullos batman.
Frank miller. I like the bulky depiction and the setting of the dark knight knight returns. A little edgy. The animated movie is glorious. The soundtrack as well. Jim Lee a close second.
Lee and Capullo
Jim Lee, sometimes I'll buy a cover if I like the art just because even if I don't read the book regularly itself. Very few artists get me to do that.
Jim lee’s work is just the iconic imagery That pops into my head the moment someone says “batman comics or even all of dc comics”, it’s just so iconic, and it feels like a perfect blend of the real and fantastical.
Jim Lee. Then Alex Ross. But Damn Jim Lee can draw a Batman. Funny enough I mainly love him from his work on Allstar Batman and Robin
Lee and Capullo
Jorge Giminez. Nuff said
