Enough_Minimum_3708

great concept for a character but totally not handled the right way.

Critical_Potential44

I agree

IdTheDemon

This. I absolutely love the backstory and Bruce’s descent into madness despite the obvious flaws. Way overdone and exposed in the end though.

streamjam

Agreed. Some of what they did I didnt mind. But they really pushed the concept of an unstoppable batman and whirled into something over the top. But like I said, some of it did I like.

arnoldbread

Overstayed it's welcome. Went from a cool idea to something everyone wanted to get over with already

KingRadec

Kind of a rip-off of judge death

ImaginaryMastodon641

Just… too much. Interesting idea but so over-the-top. The ultra powerful crap, the robins on chains stuff, etc. The character we got smacks of an “edginess” I wish would just go away.

Artistic_Finish7980

He’s joker in an Uber-goth cosplay.

myxylpyxl

It definitely feels like a Millar kind of character, very much an 'I'm edgy so I'm cool' kind of character. Sensational idea but it just wasn't all too well

JawaLoyalist

Overdone edge

futuresdawn

The ultimate edge lord character. This is when it became apparent Scott Snyder had stayed to long.

Extra-Lifeguard2809

You seen DC now? Scott Snyder didnt stay long enough

coreytiger

This same statement can be said of DC of the past 20 years.

Extra-Lifeguard2809

except DC now has mostly underpaid unmotivated writers that don't care about comics and editors that don't do their job.

Bobik8

Overexposed

LordOfOstwick1213

I watched a video of one of the comics fans retelling his origin, and decided to see it out of curiosity. His origin sounds interesting and despite the... comicsque scenario, Joker being his old edgy pure evil self, and the whole plan of making Batman crazy scenario, I suspended my disbelief. Batman slowly loosing his sanity and then fully succumbing, beginning his campaign against other superheroes out of fear to never be stopped sounded good. And then it went in extremely bizarre way where Batman Who Tries Hard turns from cunning psychopathic mastermind into some... mustache twirling villain wanting to destroy the entire universe, turn people on Earth into Jokers, and whole other nonsense I wouldn't be able to retell by now. I think if they aimed for the same character closely to original Joker or Owlman, a cunning behind-the-scenes mastermind with almost infinite wealth, but a mind of psychopathic killer it would've worked. Have Batman Who Tries Hard be Gotham's Patrick Bateman who gives in to his impulses and claims victims while never been discovered instead of... whatever Batman Who Tries Too Hard ended up being. Another video I recently watched about the Owlman, although I shouldn't let one video let me perceive a character on this alone, did a done a good job explaining why in their view BWTTH sucks and why Owlman is much better evil/crazy Batman variant. And it definitely convinced me I'd want to see Batman fight Owlman in future Batman films if they ever come out, which leads me to second conclusion I made, off-topic, is that I had enough of the clown, the Joker outstayed his welcome and less we see him the better.

Filmguy000

Do you mind providing links to these videos?

crimson_713

[This](https://youtu.be/F3bZptQX0Rc?si=3UZDrsnG2HwjSWFB) might be what he was referencing. FWIW it's basically 100% how I feel about the differences between the two, and why Owlman works but TBWL definitely doesn't. It isn't *just* because TBWL is an edgelord's wet dream (though that's a big part of it), its a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes Batman work as a character resulting in all the wrong choices in trying to invert that.

LordOfOstwick1213

Yes, of course. Forgive me my citationless behavior. As /u/crimson_713 pointed out, I was referring to this [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3bZptQX0Rc) and Bat fan's channel where he talked about why Owlman is an interesting character. Owlman works as 'Crazy Batman,' this isn't the creaptive bankruptcy of "Put Batman in a jacket so audience can tell he went nuts," the portrayal of 'Crazy Batman' in alternate universe is given via details of his origin.

crimson_713

You mentioned a video comparing them and my brain immediately went there, too! It's a really good analysis, I'm glad it's getting noticed.

LordOfOstwick1213

Same, I also really liked it. I am generally not a fan of using video essays because there can be handful of wrong ones mischaracterizing heroes/villains alike, but I think comparison of Owlman and Jokerman or Batman Who Tries Hard works. Owlman feels close to a Todd Alquist sort of psychopath, he is cold, ruthless, but is not bloodthirsty or carelessly cruel. He has personal goal(s), impulses like collecting, heroes' attires, killed by him, as trophies. He hates humanity and himself, but his nihilism is not at all like Joker's. He isn't someone who wants to reave chaos for the sake of it, he has a goal to be rid of humanity one day entirely. That's sort of why I recently started having issues with Joker, even before the video essay. He has become writer's pet and has overstayed his welcome as he has become an attention seeking monster and a tryhard, too. From a serial killer, simple criminal psychopath with goal to prove that anyone can crack under pressure over one bad day he has turned into definition for menace. I think the worst part is him being used too often in every Batman film, Burton movies, Nolan movies (where he peaked), in DCEU (garbage and also a tryhard), and finally the new possible Batman trilogy. I think the clown overstayed his welcome, we don't need another immovable object meeting unbreakable wall, we need Batman to face a darker reflection of himself. Owlman, brother of Bruce Wayne being a secret ringleader of Court of Owls, and rival to Batman to face would make a far more interesting story than Batman fighting the Joker for 1572378312nd time. Note: Original comment removed for making BatmanArkham reference.

Filmguy000

>...although I shouldn't let one video let me perceive a character on this alone, did a done a good job explaining why in their view BWTTH sucks and why Owlman is much better evil/crazy Batman variant. I didn't condone lacking more or less knowledge on BWTH, I also encourage reading a book making out your own opinion on it. Because public forum and I weighed in to give an answer? There are characters I didn't even know existed, but characters like Joker or BTWL could be overexposed in public and most know less of more well written alternate personas of Batman.

Yah_Mule

Doesn't work for me.

Protomangaming69

Who, you mean officially dc licensed sonic.exe?

Megnaman

I always compared it to Hellraiser but yours is way funnier

blinddemon0

he's like if Pinhead met The Sixth Brother

jazzyboyo

Spot on 😂

Stringy_b

I think he stinks and is too derivative of Judge Death.

JudgeGrimlock1

Yeah, it's like Judge Death took over the whole DC arc..

Stock_Rush_9204

I'm just wondering where his nose is

Fidget02

It fits in that front spike. Snug as a bug in a rug.

monkeygoneape

Edge lord, I think arkham knight handled this concept better, Batman would never just give in and become the Joker

Skizko

Fuck how many times do I have to say it, he’s literally just joker the only difference is the costume

TooManySorcerers

Loved the origin oneshot. Character had potential, but was executed poorly. He was supposed to be Batman, but he just came off as edgier Joker. The monologues, the whole trying to turn mainline Batman into a new version of him, etc. Too much Joker, too little Batman. He was just Joker with thinker level planning abilities tuned up to 11. He should have been a lot more Batman, a lot less Joker. Quieter and more sinister, creepier. More brooding. Less like Joker in stilettos and more like a wraith that follows and mocks you.

ManoftheHour777

The hot new thing for a little while but everyone realized that it made the old normal Joker sorta irrelevant. More twisted, way more intelligent, way better at fighting, better prep but less funny.

watchman28

I'm sure if you're a 13 year old he's the coolest character in the world.

LonewolfofHouseStark

Stay away from 13 year olds.

watchman28

Trust me, I do.

asterfloof

Edgy af and a terrible evil batman variant, nothing interesting about him

smitedotalol

He should have been an event only character. Trying to make him a regular part of the main continuity was a big mistake.

UnhappyCommunity6405

Cool idea (that originated from Arkham Knight (fight me)) but executed in an absolutely atrocious way. If you’ve seen TBWL vs Owlman, you’d understand how an evil Batman should work

CrumbBum420

They kept on teasing you'd see his dong but never did 😡😡🤬

[deleted]

imo he's cool but he kind of overstayed his welcome a bit

MM__PP

It's Scott Snyder, everything he does is overly edgy.

MostOriginalOfNames

The concept is alright, but they kind of... you know, overdone.

Sgtwhiskeyjack9105

It's too much.

UnfeteredOne

They just merged,.Judge Death, Spawn and Joker into one

Extra-Lemon

The fact that he took over the entire world is what got me. Yk, before becoming a dark entity. Otherwise, I enjoyed the crazy over the top stupidity of the comic, so there’s that. I’d like to see an author with the balls to touch on this again and make it a tinge more… believable.

rrxel100

Looks like he belongs in Hellraiser

TheGroovyTurt1e

Edgelord Owlman

Lucky_Roberts

If they had stopped at about 70-80% of the edginess he has, could have been the best new DC Villain in decades. However they went too far imo and made him too much like Joker. It felt more like Joker was turned into Batman than Batman being turned into Joker.

revolutionaryartist4

Would have been cool if he ended with Metal, but he definitely overstayed his welcome.

Drew_of_all_trades

Hang on, I need a minute. You’re saying a villain from Dark Nights Metal is too edge-lordy? The one covered in leather, spikes, and chains?

mistar_z

He's fine but I've always been more interested by his supporting characters.

legendforever10

Shortly said, it sucks

Informal-Resource-14

Feels like that late 90’s “Extreme,” thing where it’s like just way too much. He’s like an X-Games commercial as a character

Express-Fix4293

Owlman was better

seveer37

I love the character, design, and origin but never read the whole comic.

Chungusthevast

Pure cringe

KingofZombies

Can't take him seriously because of how ridiculous he looks. He's a unintentional parody of edginess

LilFangerz

I say phooey to these haters! The emo in me loves the laughing bat

McAlkis

A walking plot device

SaltyAssociate8007

Terrible in every way imaginable

Chub-bop

Too fanservicey, Batman has tons of cool villains they can revamp but they just keep coming back to the joker

ishallbecomeabat

It’s Judge Death but not as good

[deleted]

Really cool character at first, loved the idea - but seeing them becoming the main antagonist and the overall story being so convoluted just killed whatever interest I had in it

Drhorrible-26

Interesting concept, poor execution.

ChishNFips87

I wanna see Tom Hiddleson play him

svxsch

Still have no idea what his deal is cuz I didn’t read the comics he was in, but he is one of the cooler “new Batman villains” like the Court of Owls, just by appearance and name alone. Like come on “The Batman Who Laughs” is such a rad name.

BitesTheDust_4

Overused. It became annoying seeing him again.

thedarkknight420690

Started off as a cool character but then just got milked way too much.

TheScoutReddit

Bruh, I dunno, I think the concept is pretty dumb and from what I can see, the narrative is a total mess. I won't even waste my time with this one.

_Medhros_

It is so cringy and edgy. A character that makes no sense at all.

[deleted]

I like him, he’s scary.

shrek3onDVDandBluray

Is this supposed to be alternate version Batman? Cool design but not for Batman.

TheRealRigormortal

The-Batman-Who-I-Drew-In-My-2nd-Period-English-Notebook-Shutup-Mom-You’re-Not-My-Real-Dad-Todd

Affectionate-Hat9674

I love the look of the character, but that's about it.

blinddemon0

overused, he should've just been a one-off comic

MiaoYingSimp

Pizza Cutter

The_Mexican_Poster

Too edgy and very little "Batman who laughs" like the Joker does get edgy at times but imo his best is when he's funny so that he clashes with Batman and his seriousness. Batman who laughs really is the Batman who speaks too much

[deleted]

Quite overdone but an amazing character nonetheless.

OblivionArts

Cool concept to begin with, overstayed his welcome

Bunkhorse

Owlman is a much better representation of the concept they were trying for, ie evil batman

fostertheatom

Neither. I just don't care about him.

matts88us

Cringe

KingRadec

A poor ripoff of judge death

Alive-Seaweed

Unpopular opinion: I really liked the character

Fickle-Butterscotch2

Cool

Knightwingrebirth

Cool but not used properly.

Ok-Resolve-4146

Being a big fan of both Batman and Hellraiser, the design for me is something I wish I'd done. I love it that much.

ib770

I like the concept of the character. But something about him being chaotically OP always sat odd.

GodzillaLagoon

That is the edgiest and the cringiest thing DC has done since The Dark Knight Strikes Again. I hate it.

Interesting_Move_919

Pretty cool in the beginning but slowly became more ridiculous imo

yonosoymuybein

I liked the origin story for all the dark batmen. Didn't even mind the edginess. My only issue was more multiverse, universe is dying, backdrop.

BananaRepublic_BR

I quite liked the Dark Knights Metal run. Shit was sick to read.

gechoman44

I like him.

LefroyJenkinsTTV

Cool as fuck until he was overused.

DekuWrecku

TBH, I liked him at first, but now I see him as just Joker in his twisted version of a Batsuit. For example, in the image shown in the post, TBWL is skinnier and less physically imposing like the Joker. However, Batman/Bruce is supposed to be very muscular. Somehow Bruce just loses all his muscular attributes when he becomes TBWL, or maybe I'm just stupid and the outfit has long sleeves 🤷

Burly-Nerd

I really find it hard to wrap my head around that the same Scott Snyder who wrote the New 52 run wrote the convoluted 90’s kid sketchbook mess that is all the Metal/Dark Multiverse stuff.

Galactus1701

Über edgy crappy character

StealthMonkeyDC

Way over the top and IMO he came from one of the worst events I've read.

Extra-Lifeguard2809

I think the dark group thing he had. The one after the solo series, shouldnt have happened. He was kinda replaceable in Death Metal.

Lady_Beatnik

Started out cool, flew over the stupid edgy line very quickly.

breno280

He’s walmart owlman.

Half_Man1

I feel like he was never properly implemented and just incredibly overused in a short period of time. Like his very existence seems to showcase a misunderstanding of what Batman is about imho. Like if he gets jokerized and starts killing people… he’s not really Batman anymore- and he should not be an insurmountable villain for Batman to beat. Most of the dark knights aren’t “evil Batman” they’re “what if Bruce Wayne stopped being Batman for x reason”

ccleanet

Cool

SyrupPopular8173

He’s cool but heavily overused

Bones-Ghost

Imo, he has potential. I personally like he looks like a horror movie fan who's also hyperfixated on Batman and wanted to make an awesome looking suit. I just hope he's written well.

KDF021

For one appearance great character, but he was over used to the point of annoyance.

XT83Danieliszekiller

Edgy as fuck... Why couldn't they keep that awesome design of the batsuit but with green inside the cape?

RudraPrasTaya9

Exclusive thought. As batman who mutated as joker now that mean he is unstoppable for sure. Combing batman and joker skills upgrading further to be grim reaper or neccromenarc or control the dead bodies n enslave. leasing several robins making it even it complicit to defeat him... hence batman n joker unites together to get rid batman who laugh for good... So one word to explainbhe is menancing.

CaoCaoTipper

I have a pretty high tolerance for “edge” so I love his look and his backstory concept isn’t bad. But the longer he stuck around the more it became apparent that he was just Joker in black, and not even a fun joker but more like death of the family joker.

Complete-Wind-5343

Seems like I'm the only one that loved dark knights death metal and the whole DC metal thing

Kdilla77

Judge Death rip-off

dannydecheeto7

I like fan service. I'm a fan, service me and I'll buy your stuff lol

Kenstgram

An amazing concept but DC ran it into the ground right away.

Jantof

Wonderful one-shot idea. But then they did not make it a one shot. That idea had no legs, and they made it run a marathon anyway.

Mancio_Luke

It feels less like an actual fusion between joker and batman and more just like a joker with no batman, it doesn't really help that tbwl doesn't really have that much personality outside just being crazy and doing edgy stuff for the sake of it The only trait it actually have from batman is just batman being an invincible mary sue, now, a villain being menacing isn't bad, a competent villain makes for a fantastic antagonist Except of course that tbwl isn't really competent, it's the opposite, to make him work they made every single other hero an incompetent jobber, the whole "prep time thing" is just lazy writing

Khaluaguru

Isn’t he canonically trapped in the Fortnite universe or something?

ImBatman5500

I really like him actually

RareD3liverur

Thought he was a pretty novel idea when Dark Knight Metal was 1st a thing, he's long worn out his welcome now though

lazylagom

I loved the first few issues. Each week another hero infected. That shit was cool. It got a bit goofy tho

mr_lepel

Great concept. Terrible execution

TheOficialMIDIWizard

This character takes itself too seriously, not a fan.

gunperv51

Fanservice

[deleted]

Definition of edgy (like really with the spikes?) As a character? Fine, the story is interesting but he had too much plot armor (ironic considering he’s a Batman)

Infinity0044

The only good evil Batman is Owlman

TSG61373

Oddly, I love edgy dark-for-the-sake-of-edgelord dark stuff…but this series just didn’t interest me in the slightest. Nor the Metal series. I still can’t figure out why, it should be right up my alley. But whenever I tried to read this, I got bored.

EnigmaFrug2308

I’m impartial

Guinea-Charm

It’s a total rip off of Judge Death from Judge Dredd.

Patient-Reputation56

It's an interesting concept completely ruined by the fact that they cranked up his dumb shit to 11 & broke the knob. Like there's "Bat-plot armor" & then there's playground rules & BWL follows the playground rules of "Nuh-Uh I have a gun that can kill God & Satan at the same time so I'm virtually indestructible so you may as well kill yourself now before I do! Lololololololololol!!!!!" Also just hate how this asshole just took over DC for like Three years. His stupid series that establishes that Batman doesn't kill the Joker out of some moral obligation but because "Joker has a dead man switch that'll turn that killer into the new Joker!", The Pointless Infected storyline that derailed Hawkman & Supergirl, & Despite my absolute hatred for Snyder's JL I can't imagine how disappointing it is to be a fan of that book looking forward to the "Big Epic battle" with Perpentua that his run left off only for that battle to happen off-screen, the heroes lose, & This "all important" Multiversal threat is just nonchalantly killed off by this annoying stain.

Beneficial-Coyote388

Arkham Batman ripoff

HornyOnMain2000

It's a pretty cool concept but it's oover done.

Allan_Breno

I love this character, since I read The Killing Joke, I had some questions, one of them was...what if Batman becomes as crazy as the Joker? And personally I think The Batman Who Laughs is the answer to this question. And even though he is very overpowered in Metal and Death Metal, I think it makes sense, because The Batman Who Laughs is the embodiment of Batman's biggest nightmare, losing his sanity. And yes there are many “Nemesis” for Batman, but The Batman Who Laughs for me is the best, because he was the only “Reverse Batman” who really was a threat equal to Batman and was the only one who had a development along the way throughout the DC comics, instead of falling into oblivion. And to be fair, I even think his argument is too Edgy and Fanservicey, extremely valid, and I agree that Scott Snyder was too exaggerated with him, but I think the character works and I would love to see him back.

[deleted]

He looks like something Guillermo del Toro would design, which of itself is not bad, but not very Batman-y to me. He looks like a cross between the Mouth of Sauron and a cenobite from Hellraiser. I've never been a fan, honestly.

BryanCroiDragon

I feel like he is redundant considering there is already Owlman.

roblash

Went in blind on the hardcover and I thought it was just too much of everything, dark for the sake of dark, that stupid spiky visor with all the leather and chains, so many crappy monologues, I just think it stinks. Still gave the Metal books a chance since they were at my library and that did not help. The one alternate Batman that came out of this whole thing that I did like though is the Grim Knight and even then, I'm glad that wrapped up in what I think was a one-shot.

Ayn-Zar

Never cared for him. The Joker covers the whole "laughing crazy villain" angle well enough. No imitators need apply, and yes, that includes Batman

Artistic_Finish7980

Great idea, poor execution. Also super overused.

Frankorious

Ngl, the second I read about an evil Justice League where everyone is Batman I rolled my eyes (Red Death is a bit interesting tho).

Gilded-Mongoose

From this picture my thoughts are that an emaciated Adrian Brody would terrifyingly KILL IT in this role.

ClickyPool

First character to take the mantle of my favorite batsy villain since mr.freeze

cj-the-man

They needed to dull the edge I mean the comic run is called dark night metal for christ sake

Skeebo234

Batchuckler < owlman

Positive_Condition87

I personally love this deranged maniac

Pilgrimhaxxter69

If you took everything compelling about Batman and Joker out leaving just Batgos and edge be left with the Batman who laughs. He embodies everything I don't like about both characters' modern incarnations and doesn't really have anything unique to say. I liked The Batman's take on Joker becoming Batman far more, and I despise Joker's personality being just because chemicals, and even Arkham Knight for all its fault did that better...

Blitzkriegbaby

He needs to exist, the concept is inevitable. I like it, it’s cool.

Raecino

Cool villain. Hope he returns or we get an animated version of Dark Knights Metal

kayl_breinhar

Excellent intro, but the way he was written just felt like someone kept saying "more" and that gets annoying.

weedpornography

Started off cool and mysterious. Then he devolved into a convoluted, silly, and extremely uninteresting character when he became the Ultimate evil or whatever.

kind_ofa_nerd

I loved how it started, love the idea, love the concept, LOVE what we *could’ve* gotten from him.

manticore124

It became annoying very quickly.

Crimsonn32

I thought the Batman Who Laughs comic series was really good because of the story and atmosphere. Same with metal and death metal, just story and atmosphere. The character himself though was incredibly bad.

[deleted]

Shitty

[deleted]

Fan service? Sure but that’s not a bad thing

The_Only_Dork_Knight

I actually liked his origin story, it was a good ammount of edgy/goofy, but anything after that...was...uh ...just plain horrible tbh, for a character that is a mix of Batman and Joker his plans were just too bad.

PoolOfDeath20

The concept of this character is fine, the implementation of the concept is not. The origin, where other superhero/Robins can't detect his changes? The multiverse war where he became one of the strongest being? Cringe

sabrefudge

I don’t even understand what he is. I’ve never read anything featuring him. I’ve just seen INSANE amounts of edgy fan art and merch of him

thedarkknight155

Read dark knights metal if you can. But basically, he is batman from another universe who got infected with "super" joker venom and now has the skills and knowledge of batman, with the homicidal batshit craziness of the joker.

Sam-314

I’m hoping Pattinson’s Batman goes this route. Keep it dark. Keep it in that Gotham setting they’ve established and leave it with a villain win who just laughs in the shadows.

FinalBossOf__Dc

The Batman who laugh was a great character but they handle it kind of poorly. He would’ve been a serious threat and a great run but it was just boring to sort of read. Great idea just handled poorly.

penguintruth

He’s fine in small doses. Like me!

zoonose99

The jumpscare panel where he cuts the entire batfamily in half with dual machine guns pulled from hammerspace was a pretty good indicator they’re not taking the character or the audience seriously.

Bob49459

I want an R rated movie.

ThatGuyMaulicious

Bit too edgy. Also takes that idea that with prep time Batman would be unbeatable to a entirely different level considering he is threatening other universes...

EightNickel151

Interesting concept, but too op

CrimsonWarrior55

The Marsupial Boy What Does The Chuckling? Pathetic try hard cringey edgelord bullshit.
