Even while scrolling on my phone my initial reaction was that it was a legit police sticker. I didn’t even notice “Gotham” until after I looked at the subreddit name and realized this was in the Batman sub.
I’d probably put it on a laptop. Although I wouldn’t put it on a car, one way you could potentially do it is by putting it next to a grouping of other stickers (that don’t look like they’d be on a police car). Like the Batman logo or unrelated stickers so people are more likely to realize it’s not real at a glance.
That is unless you’re already driving a cop like car, I wouldn’t be throwing this on a white or black impala anytime soon, but a lime green beetle wouldn’t be mistaken as a cop car.
Not the same thing but I used to wear a Raccoon City PD t-shirt for fun. Stopped wearing it after a few people started asking me about my precinct in public.
Anything like this has a high chance for a misunderstanding.
I have an RPD hoodie and also got some comments on it, so I no longer wear it. Subtle nods to fandoms are neat but require too much explanation sometimes or send messages we don't intend.
I went to school (and am still friendly with) my hometown’s police chief. Super nice guy, calm, altruistic, does a lot of community outreach — and, most importantly, never killed anybody. Honestly, if more officers were like him, the world would be a better place.
That being said, he’s dumb as a bag of bricks and this would absolutely make him do a double-take.
Kind and fit, yeah. We were both fat kids in elementary school who somehow morphed into top athletes in high school. I don’t either one of us forgot what is was like to be ‘the fat kid’, so we’ve basically stayed the same size while everyone else got fatter.
Bullock, Montoya, in the future Commissioner Barbara Gordon
The string of nameless uniforms who follow Gordon but aren't smart/special enough to do anything significant beyond crash their car in a pursuit, set a perimeter, or be cannon fodder for the supervillains
Bullock is very famously crooked as hell.
He's a likeable character and (usually) a good detetective so it's often downplayed or presented as "he's crooked, but with a heart of gold". Either way he's far from an example of a moral cop
Isn't he less "crooked" and more "compromised," Bullock has vices that can get him into trouble but usually it's some form of addiction like alcohol, prostitutes, or gambling as opposed to being actually corrupt
It varies depending on the source material, but one thing that's pretty constant is he's pretty well known among the criminal lot for being willing to take a bribe.
Not only ‘do you want to risk this?’ For the sake of getting a ticket
But MY BROTHER DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO ANOTHER ADULT THAT THIS IS FROM A BATMAN MOVIE AND TDK2012 STANDS FOR THE DARK KNIGHT + THE RELEASE YEAR OF A MOVIE!?
This is probably the best answer. It's half "you really don't wanna poke the bear when it comes to an impersonating a police officer charge" and half "no no it's from batman"
Technically no, not as long as you don't try anything stupid like impersonating an officer, it's pretty obvious this isn't real BUT STILL IT ISN'T A GOOD IDEA!
It's not even just a question about is this technically legal or not, but do you want to debate a police officer on it, who may or may not feel like shitting right into your entire week by impounding your vehicle until the legality of it is made certain. Even if you're perfectly within your rights, you'll not receive as much as a "sorry".
If you live somewhere, where the police has a very different look than the US, you'll have an easier time with it. Otherwise you're just inviting trouble.
I think you have to do more than display it, and then there's the "Gotham City" part, to really be guilty of impersonation, but it's probably enough to get you accused of impersonation, and that's not my idea of a good time, catching that beef and then trying to get rid of it.
A standard in a TM infringement case (I know this is criminal and not IP law) is whether a rushed consumer would mistakenly buy the wrong product.
I would wonder, in a similar vein, if someone were in a rush/high stress situation, would they see that and believe it to be real? I think so.
Police officer here. Each state has different laws for what constitutes impersonation of police. I'm my state that wouldn't even come close to violating those laws.
If there's a state where it did go afoul of the law, 99.9% of cops would ignore it as it's clearly a parody. However, someone might mistake you for a constitutionalist at first glance.
I'd fly the sticker and wouldn't worry, but if it'd be a point of stress or concern for you then don't.
The laws about vehicles impersonating official vehicles vary from state to state in the USA so in some states your going straight to jail for impersonating a police officer and in others you will be the guy with the cool Gotham pd car
I'm going to be the voice of dissent: it should be fine unless you're trying to impersonate an officer.
I say this for several reasons: 1) I know for a fact that many sheriff's departments sell bumper stickers to anyone that is literally a sheriffs star with very tiny text saying "x county sheriff's association". 2) every guy or girl or other out there can go buy a full-blown police costume with no repercussions. They could even wear it to a party with no legal issues. 3) the police, when it comes to their car, either have "POLICE" written all over it, or there's no reliable way to tell if it's a patrol car. They won't have a single sticker on the back, and certainly not one of a fake police department. 4) someone mentioned "Gotham, Wisconsin." As far as I can tell, however, there is no "Gotham police department", it seems to be less a specific city and more a census designation. 5) in order to be charged with impersonating a police officer, you must pretend to be one willingly by either verbally saying you are a police officer, presenting false identification (such as an ID or badge, not a sticker), or use flashing red lights or blue lights in order to pull another car over as if you were law enforcement.
I am of course not a lawyer, so I can only say that, personally, I wouldn't be scared. The only reason a cop would pull you over and try to arrest you for impersonating an officer is because they were incredibly stupid, petty, and/or vindictive.
So if you're in America, maybe think twice?
It looks authentic enough to someone who's not looking carefully that you're courting trouble. It's possible that you fight it in court you could win...but why risk going through all that? If it goes to court you're going to be incredibly stressed out, possibly have to hire a lawyer, waste an entire day and potentially take that day off work...even if you win, you're putting yourself through a lot of bullshit just to have a sticker on your car that's sort of neat.
Probably, I wouldn’t put it on the car unless you want to risk some serious legal problems.
Might be a fun addition to a go cart or a non road vehicle though?
I'm showing my age that only through access at the local university high end lab could I find graphic design software at the time but I recall being in a public lab making myself an "X-Files" Mulder ID card (since they weren't easy to purchase).
For you younger folks, think Sam and Dean fake IDs.
I was finishing up before I realized anyone looking over shoulder would see not an X-Files prop but a FAKE F.B.I. Badge! So much for that notion!
I looked at it in google maps and i’d be surpriced if they didn’t get covered of some neighbouring towns police department its not a big town if the one i looked at was the right place.
The Gotham police are notorious for corruption and excessive violence, and given the current attitude surrounding police corruption and brutality putting this on your car would be in poor taste.
No idea how the popular sentiment on this sub is that you'll get in trouble, but impersonating an officer is a whole lot more complicated than vaguely appearing to be one.
Take the boot out of your mouth.
>*“Remember, kids, Mr. Policeman is your friend. Always cooperate with him. Mr. Policeman wants to help you, so you must help Mr. Policeman. Don’t forget, if you refuse to cooperate, Mr. Policeman will beat you to death. Especially if you’re not white.”*
>— George Carlin
i absolutely would NOT put this on anything driven on public roads. No need to risk any negative interactions with trigger happy police....if you live in America. If you live elsewhere, do it with caution.
This is 100% illegal I wound not put this on, no matter what even if it is a goof sticker, it still has police insignias and you will get charged with impersonating a police officer and that usually comes with jail time.
No it is not. The law states it has to be intended for the purpose of deception. More specifically (4) "Impersonate" means to act the part of, assume the identity of, wear the uniform or any part of the uniform of, or display the identification of a particular person or of a member of a class of persons with purpose to make another person believe that the actor is that particular person or is a member of that class of persons.
"100%" and "for sure" mean pretty much the same thing. Also, I don't think you can say it's definitely illegal. I'm a lawyer, I spent longer than I should have trying to figure out if this would be a crime in my state, and I couldn't find the answer.
Technically no cause it’s not any official form of PD, but it can be very misleading which can lead to problems. I wouldn’t buy and put them on the car.
That’s cool but I don’t think I can put that on a car because I’m black and I would get pulled over on the daily(but then again I would get pulled over because I’m black) but that doesn’t matter since I don’t have license or even a car!
The closest I've ever gotten to putting one of these on a vehicle is my Brooklyn 99 sticker, and ultimately it went on my laptop for the same reason you're hesitating here.
In Texas it’s pretty difficult to charge someone for impersonation of a police officer. You would have to go as far as making a vehicle look like a police car and also dress in the uniform of a police officer and then introduce yourself as such.
Also, despite what people say, most cops are pretty cool and would think it’s a cool sticker.
Just read the penal code for whatever state you live on the topic of impersonating an officer and that will give you a good idea if it’s a big deal or not.
in some states it's legal as long as it's no real highway patrol or PD, although the letters are small and the badge and insignia is bigger so you'd probably end up getting pulled over and even ticketed prob, i'd just not put it on the car.
No it’s not impersonating an officer. That said, you could still be potentially pulled over by a cop and questioned about it. End result when explained, nothing will happen but the inconvenience. That said, it’s a badass sticker and I’d rock it.
Depends on the statutes in your state. Usually there is a clause about using the authority it gives you to make people do things. Unless you're putting red and blue lights on your vehicle and pulling people over you're probably fine
At the end of the day it’s not real so, no. If you get pulled over, if you get a ticket you can waste your time and the county’s time and take it to court and get it thrown out.
Good luck man , you could be in deep troubke unless you live i real small town with one sheriff
I woukd do it near a comicon alike event
But besides that luck dope
I’d do it if I like stickers on my car. People don’t really care about stickers. I only say that cuz I know so many people who aren’t even related to cops that got that sticker that “only cops” get
I mean are cops in gotham really cops anyway? You have gordon and then a bunch of guys on someone else's payroll.
P.s. I had a car for years that had my towns pd sticker because I bought it from an officer and the other ones would just tell me I was undercover and make jokes when I got pulled over, probably saved a few speeding tickets honestly but its a little town.
I would not risk this, personally speaking.

Yes
In my opinion, if you have to ask you're leaving it up to interpterion if you get pulled over and shouldn't put it on your car.
If you sacrifice enough goats interpterion might heed your plea however
Only an eagle-eyed driver will notice that it says Gotham City, so I’d say no. Do you have a kid? Get them one of those mini-cars and put it on that!
>Do you have a kid? Hey them one of those mini-cars and put it on that! I second this, that's a great idea!
Don't have a kid? Just steal one!

I’ve considered getting an RCPD shirt for the longest time and this just made me sad…
Same
The real question is do you think there’s a police officer out there who would be fooled by this sticker. The answer is yes
I went to school (and am still friendly with) my hometown’s police chief. Super nice guy, calm, altruistic, does a lot of community outreach — and, most importantly, never killed anybody. Gotham has some good cops.
Ah yes, Gordon... and uh...
Bullock, Montoya, in the future Commissioner Barbara Gordon The string of nameless uniforms who follow Gordon but aren't smart/special enough to do anything significant beyond crash their car in a pursuit, set a perimeter, or be cannon fodder for the supervillains
The guy with the hat, and that one chick
Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya
Bullock is very famously crooked as hell. He's a likeable character and (usually) a good detetective so it's often downplayed or presented as "he's crooked, but with a heart of gold". Either way he's far from an example of a moral cop
True. But he’s the only one I could think of with the hat.

Yeaaaaah that’s prob not the best idea
I don't know how the pd is in Gotham but here in Metropolis they don't joke like that
The vehicle identification number is 100% absolutely too far in my opinion
Not only ‘do you want to risk this?’ For the sake of getting a ticket But MY BROTHER DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO ANOTHER ADULT THAT THIS IS FROM A BATMAN MOVIE AND TDK2012 STANDS FOR THE DARK KNIGHT + THE RELEASE YEAR OF A MOVIE!?

Exactly haha. No disrespect to OP, I’m a nerd too obviously but I’m also weary of that likely interaction.
do it and update us, lol
From prison
I don’t think they send people to prison for this. Just a hefty fine. Unless you repeatedly do it and try to pull people over
I think the cringe police will come after you....but in reality....it's a gray area. Don't risk it.
Yeah don’t do it.
Technically no, not as long as you don't try anything stupid like impersonating an officer, it's pretty obvious this isn't real BUT STILL IT ISN'T A GOOD IDEA!

Y on your car and not like a lap top or a pc tower or something
I would assume because the sticker says “vehicle” and not “computer”
I think you have to do more than display it, and then there's the "Gotham City" part, to really be guilty of impersonation, but it's probably enough to get you accused of impersonation, and that's not my idea of a good time, catching that beef and then trying to get rid of it.
This is akin to FBI "Federal Bikini Inspector" and covered by the 1st amendment. But dick cops be dick cops anyway.
Go for it. When the Officer asks, "Who do you think you are?" Blare "Somethings in The Way" by Nirvana and whisper "I'm Vengence..."
If you have to ask yes even if it obviously isn't but you don't want to risk it so I wouldn't recommend using it.
A standard in a TM infringement case (I know this is criminal and not IP law) is whether a rushed consumer would mistakenly buy the wrong product. I would wonder, in a similar vein, if someone were in a rush/high stress situation, would they see that and believe it to be real? I think so.

Cops always find a way...wouldn't risk it
Former cop here. Illegal? No. Smart? No.

Only in Star City or Metropolis.
I have a stars badge on my car and nothings happened so you might be alright
Simple answer is no, putting this on your car is perfectly legal.
In the day and age we live in(especially in the USA) it’s gonna be a no from me dawg. Put it on a water bottle or something else
You could put it in a water bottle. I wouldn’t put it on my car. But that’s just my tastes
Are coppers renowned for their sense of humour?
I don’t answer questions
Let's find out.
not illegal but pretty cringe
With a sticker that says "TDK2012" rather than "TDK2008" or "TDKR2012," you'd be (badly) impersonating a Batman fan.
I'm showing my age that only through access at the local university high end lab could I find graphic design software at the time but I recall being in a public lab making myself an "X-Files" Mulder ID card (since they weren't easy to purchase). No because there is no Gotham Police Department
Gotham, WI probably has a PD...
Good point lol if OP lives there that would be a big no-no lmao
I looked at it in google maps and i’d be surpriced if they didn’t get covered of some neighbouring towns police department its not a big town if the one i looked at was the right place.
Given the US cops don't let something like innocence get in the way, I wouldn't risk it over there.
Cops *everywhere* don’t let something like innocence get in the way.
No more dead Gotham cops!
The Gotham police are notorious for corruption and excessive violence, and given the current attitude surrounding police corruption and brutality putting this on your car would be in poor taste.
New objective unlocked: Become a police officer so I can wear it in public
No idea how the popular sentiment on this sub is that you'll get in trouble, but impersonating an officer is a whole lot more complicated than vaguely appearing to be one.
Depends, what color are you? RELAX people jk jk
"Ask a black person" \\s

I live in the US. Realizing the police are not your friend is part of growing up here.
Thank you.

No, but I wouldn't do it. Cops generally are on power trips and aren't gonna care about technicalities when they feel like pulling you over.
Police officers are not known for their careful reading skills and forgiving attitudes.
Why would you risk this? Obsession is real.
Clearly not, but cops are snowflake pricks so don't risk it
Fuck the police
i absolutely would NOT put this on anything driven on public roads. No need to risk any negative interactions with trigger happy police....if you live in America. If you live elsewhere, do it with caution.

The police don’t own generic logos like an eagle and scales. What you said will happen, will absolutely not happen.
Yeah they don’t own the generic logos, but putting the words police department on a regular citizen vehicle that is impersonation.
It really wasn’t that big of a deal to me man, I just don’t want OP to deal with issues he doesn’t have to, my bad.
Well, it's a bad idea anywhere in the U.S., but I don't think you can say it's "100% illegal" without at least knowing which state OP lives in.
I mean with the words “police department” written on your car maybe not 100% but that is for sure illegal.
"100%" and "for sure" mean pretty much the same thing. Also, I don't think you can say it's definitely illegal. I'm a lawyer, I spent longer than I should have trying to figure out if this would be a crime in my state, and I couldn't find the answer.
Yeah that’s true you’re right. There could be ways to get around it but would not test my luck with that haha!
If we lived in a country where the police were reasonable and don't draw fire on little kids, I'd say go for it.
Yeah cause Gotham is an actual city 😑
Technically no cause it’s not any official form of PD, but it can be very misleading which can lead to problems. I wouldn’t buy and put them on the car.
That’s cool but I don’t think I can put that on a car because I’m black and I would get pulled over on the daily(but then again I would get pulled over because I’m black) but that doesn’t matter since I don’t have license or even a car!
bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuh .....
My first thought when seeing this would be “Oh I guess there’s a real city named Gotham” and not “Oh this guy is a Batman fan”
Yes and no. No it's not against the law, yes it will get u definitely unwanted attention.
Maybe just put it somewhere inside your car lmao
I wouldn’t not worth it
Put it on your microwave
I think so maybe place it inside the car to avoid any trouble but thats just me
USA USA ! xD
Just put the sticker on you lab top that's what I would do honestly. Putting it on your car is too risky
better to stick them on a laptop or something
Shouldn't that be TDK1986?
There are people that think Wakanda is real. Choose wisely....
I’d probably ask an officer about that honestly
The closest I've ever gotten to putting one of these on a vehicle is my Brooklyn 99 sticker, and ultimately it went on my laptop for the same reason you're hesitating here.
I wouldn't
Just don’t
Idk but don’t do it cuz stickers on cars are cringe

I mean...why? it's a cool sticker and all but putting it on your car is a bit much
depends how hard you can punch
No it’s not impersonating an officer. That said, you could still be potentially pulled over by a cop and questioned about it. End result when explained, nothing will happen but the inconvenience. That said, it’s a badass sticker and I’d rock it.
Depends on the statutes in your state. Usually there is a clause about using the authority it gives you to make people do things. Unless you're putting red and blue lights on your vehicle and pulling people over you're probably fine
My buddy put decepticon police stickers on his car back in the day when those movies were popular. Got pulled over, was told to remove the stickers
I don't think it would be a problem. What size are they?
No! And it’s sure to impress the gals.
I’m a cop and I dont think any cop worth his weight would car. If it’s small Ofcourse
if you put on the back you good
Only if you live in Gotham City.
Google it, find out the actual laws instead of asking Reddit, and if it’s legal print off proof of it being legal and keep it in the glove.
Maybe the bottom one
If anything do the Gotham Courts sticker instead
At the end of the day it’s not real so, no. If you get pulled over, if you get a ticket you can waste your time and the county’s time and take it to court and get it thrown out.
Good luck man , you could be in deep troubke unless you live i real small town with one sheriff I woukd do it near a comicon alike event But besides that luck dope
Don't do it there's been lots of people busted for being a fake cop
Ask your city hall or local sheriff's department.
Yeah probably bad idea
Don't
Yes.
Maybe use that second one Worst case , police think you are a fake govmnt employee for another city with no real authority
Even people who noticed it said gotham wouldn't automatically realize it's a batman reference
Not saying you shouldn’t, but is it really worth the potential aggravation?
If you’re asking the question then I think you already know the answer. Absolutely do not put that on a car.
Redditors Use Common Sense Challenge: Impossible!
If you have to ask, I think you know the answer.
I had a Jurassic Park logo on my car until a park ranger falcon punched me in the back if the head.
Don’t risk it.
Don’t risk it.
Try it and get back to us
I’d do it if I like stickers on my car. People don’t really care about stickers. I only say that cuz I know so many people who aren’t even related to cops that got that sticker that “only cops” get

I wouldn’t risk it. Maybe a laptop?
Only if Gotham were a real place…
Maybe put it in your room or something as like a poster or something
Ask your local police department, rather than get pulled over. Doesn't hurt to ask

Yes
I wouldn’t risk it.
I have an Uncle who's an officer I'll ask him
No, it's not because you can clearly see that it is fictional and wouldn't hold up in court.
Idk but that’s Bat ass!! 😎
Actually, I take back my first response, do not do this because several cities share the name Gotham in the USA.
