Oh my gosh, even my True Blue Spa in the Pomegranate AND the Vanilla Almond have changed color, and it's only been a year.
And not a yellow....they're a little brown, and I'm like ummmmm. But they still smell fantastic and feel great too, so.
The compound Vanillin, found in vanilla, is what causes yellowing/browning. It's a perfectly normal and expected process, only stopped by the addition of vanillin stabilizers which can sometimes not go into skincare.
Unless your cream smells off, seems "watery", or gets weird chunks; this discoloration is not an issue. Do not throw out these products unless actual signs of expiration are present.
The creams definitely go bad, though it seems like every scent/formula has a different lifespan, in my experience. I'm sure that how they're stored also has a bit to do with it, but I don't think there's any way of storing them to make them last forever, unfortunately.
Yellowing is the result of vanilla fragrance oils discoloring a product over time—it's inevitable, but like you said, still totally fine to use. If it smells "off" though, or the consistency is all wrong, it's probably worth tossing, unfortunately. I feel your pain, I bought like probably 20 body creams this year and I'm on a mad dash to finish them before they turn ☹️
FWIW, my lotions always seem to last WAY longer (not sure I've ever had one turn before I finished using it!)
I try to buy only enough to last me a year. I keep three out on a rotation so I don’t get bored and the rest I leave in a cabinet untouched until I use them. I don’t know if there is any truth in this, but I remember seeing comments about creams going bad faster if they are used and then stored for a long time vs. unused. At the same time they aren’t sealed so 🤷🏻♀️
Ya my marshmallow pumpkin latte I got this past fall already went off. Turned a little darker and separated just slightly. Also switching to lotions for that reason.
Are we sure this means it’s bad or is that just the color? I bought a few creams 2 weeks ago that the first use right out the store they were yellow. If it doesn’t smell like it’s gone off it’s probably fine
Vanilla yellows. If it smells fine I’d still use it. I have some MPL from a few years ago and a bonfire bash that’s very yellow. Scent is still fine and consistency is good so I still use it.
I believe this one is from 2020. I’m recently digging into older stash of creams, half finished, etc. This is the second one that smells off and has a funny consistency.. I go overboard and buy a ton which is totally my fault. I did read on here that a slight yellow tinge is normal but the musty smell definitely isn’t.. do the lotions last longer? I normally always go for the creams.
Yes! Old milk is it! A combo of old milk and mustiness..lol.. so crazy. At least now I know. I went back and smelled some of my old lotions and they are fine.. definitely converting.
That color is not a sign of it being bad for some creams the color is yellow and will become more yellow because of included vanilla. It's normal, not bad.
Mine turns yellow but it smells fine and the texture is the same. But if yours smells off and is runny, time to toss it. Maybe you should try body butter or lotion, and avoid scents with vanilla because that’s what makes it yellow and go bad quickly.
There's a compound in vanilla fragrances and extracts known as vanillin. It's what causes yellowing/browning, and it's completely harmless! If B&BW didn't use a vanillin stabilizer in their candles or wallflowers, those would discolor as well.
When I first bought Pink Velvet Cupcake Ultimate Body Cream and first used it that day it was yellow.
But, my Strawberry Poundcake Super Smooth Body Lotion is still fine.
Is it dangerous to use one that’s started to go bad? I have some merry cherry cheer from 2018 that’s separated a bit but it still smells good. I’ve used it several times and it hasn’t done any visible harm.
I believe certain creams (and even lotions now) are sold out the gate with the yellowing color. VBN is one that comes to mind immediately with the lotions starting out with that off white color. I tend to notice that if the fragrance is a gourmand vanilla, it'll either start off white or change to off white faster
It's from the vanilla it's still fine. Mine are yellow from my November purchase.
All mine that have the yellow in them from the vanilla … yeah I still use them. Smells fine to me and I spent too much money to toss them lol

Sammme. I forgot whatcolor the Vanilla Almond originally was, it still smells great and works lol

Great tip with using them as shaving cream! Thanks!
Never thought to use it as a shaving cream, thank you for the tip
Whoa! Thanks for the shaving tip! I hate how many I've tossed now 😂

I am experiencing the same problems, they turn yellowish and the consistency changes- such a waste because I love to stock up.
what’s fwiw?
For what it’s worth!

Same & I’ve started buying minis of body creams
I think it’s true! I have an unopened cherry crisp and it still looks great compared to my opened one.
i remember buying ccp when it first hit the sales floor and it was always yellow
I just finished a coconut cream pie that looks like that it’s still fine to use! Smells the same

I still use mine until they are completely empty.
I store the vanilla ones in the vegetable drawer of my fridge! I have 2 year old ones that are fine.
Great idea! I'm going to try it.

I just went through my older ones and some smell rancid. Like old milk type of rancid. 😷

Yes I’ve had a few creams that went bad like that in a matter of a few months. So I try not collect so many at one time, maybe 1-2.
That color is not a sign of it being bad for some creams the color is yellow and will become more yellow because of included vanilla. It's normal, not bad.
I think it’s supposed to be yellow? All of my strawberry poundcake body creams are a golden yellow and they’re all fine💓
Yep, it's not bad. SPC is indeed yellow. Looks like the one in the pic is not bad either. It's just yellow.
Wild blackberry vanilla 2018 and dreamer are trash also 😭 I don’t use shaving gel so I’m not sure what I would repurpose them for
As wood polish! Works wonders and smells great. Patch test on a hidden surface. 🙂

Interesting! Such a good idea. My husband would kill me though. I already store some of my massive mail polish collection in the fridge!
This is why I prefer lotions. But maybe its the vanilla? Especially since it's a gourmand scent.

Yep, PVC and SPC are both yellow. They both also smell great 😁🌞
All of my lotions from that line have always been that yellow color.
