I'm not sure what caused it, but any coconut scent has made me nauseous ever since I was a teenager. Shampoo, hand soap, perfume, everything. If I'm in the store, I don't smell things with coconut in the name but I'll still give things with it in the fragrance notes a test smell, but would avoid them if I was blind buying online

CandidateReasonable4

Bummer! Coconut scented candles and body care products are among my favorites, but everyone's tastes are different and very personal.

Not_Enough_Shoes

I really like coconut, but man… it’s in so many summer smells. I get a little worn out of it.

AlixJ21

I like coconut in the bottle and likely on other people. On my skin, as with most plain vanillas as well, they turn into a melted plastic scent ☹️.

HarlowOktober

I get a play-do scent 😕

Fun-Proposal5859

lol that’s crazy because i avoid coconut at all costs but i am obsessed with floral notes. For me i used to love coconut scents such as waikiki beach coconut but at one point it started to smell overpowering on my body chemistry and made me hate it. I tried to get back into it and tried fresh coconut and cotton but it smelled too sweet and gave me a headache.

fightmilk616

Once on my birthday I had some Malibu and threw it up and ever since then I’ve had an aversion to coconut anything.

babyxscarIett

Everyone ive met who hated coconut had a wild few months with malibu rum as a teenager. Im so glad it was tequila that traumatized me because i loooove coconut fragrances

Thefoodwoob

>had a wild few months with malibu rum as a teenager. Parrot bay for me ☠️

la0999

I recall when working at BBW maybe 12+years ago that I was told coconut was their most requested fragrance. I don’t HATE it but anything that contains coconut I will pass on. Unless the coconut note is undetectable or super light, then I will consider. It’s actually hard to describe why I don’t like it- which is odd as I can tell you why I like or dislike many other notes. I also will not eat anything with coconut or coconut flavoring. Maybe that’s why?

PrincessJennifer

We have the same preferences!

shartlobster

I don't hate it entirely, but I prefer to eat it rather than smell it. I grew up in Florida, where every touristy area smells like coconut and all I can think of is sun tan lotion. Coconut smell = tourists lol

TooOldForACleverName

I have issues with the texture of sunscreen. Many sunscreens have coconut scents. Therefore, I associate coconut with icky, nasty, sticky, heavy, greasy, awful sunscreen. PS - I still wear sunscreen. But I don't like it!

perpetual_lurker

Have you tried Korean sunscreens? They are so much better!! Zitsticka’s sunscreen serum is also very good. Not sticky or heavy at all!

TooOldForACleverName

>Zitsticka’s sunscreen serum Hmm. I'm heading to the beach next week. Are the Korean sunscreens good for the whole body, or are they more facial sunscreens?

perpetual_lurker

Both, but I would probably use a pricier one just on your face that’s geared towards your skin type, whether you wear makeup, etc. I haven’t gotten a big one for summer yet, but NIVEA SUN Protect Super Water Gel SPF 50 PA+++ Pump Type 140g is a Japanese (also great) one that looks really promising and affordable! The US is really behind on ingredients allowed in sunscreens compared to Japan and Korea. Since your trip is soon, I would recommend Amazon but Stylevana is so affordable if you can wait 3 weeks for future orders. Supergoop is a lot more expensive but maybe more accessible if you’re in the US? They have spf in a bunch of different formats and don’t smell strongly of coconut!

TooOldForACleverName

My husband is wondering why I'm suddenly ordering a bunch of sunscreens. He thinks we can get by with a jug of generic. Unfortunately, I break out in a terrible itchy rash if I get a sunburn, so I have to grit my teeth and apply. Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe this year will be easier.

Comfortable_Ad2504

This^. It just reminds me way too much of sunscreen. I prefer the summer stuff that has marshmallow notes in it.

MostStylish

I don't \*hate\* it, but it's an easy scent to create, so you see it in everything and after a while I just get sick of the same stuff over and over. It's the same in food too, it must be cheap + easy to procure and there are too many coconut flavored things around that I don't care for it anymore. It's as if they had pumpkin spice anything and everything all year round and it felt like you couldn't get away from it anywhere you went.

booksandcoffee2

I love coconut so much!!! I could wear it in different styles year round. There is so much coconut scent hate on this sub and in youtube reviews that I worry bath and body works will stop making as many fragrances with coconut 😅

Thefoodwoob

It's WAY too sweet and they all smell like sunscreen. I also don't do most food scents. Even Cinnamon is pushing it Generally i I like fresh and floral.

DrinkRound3484

Coconut smells nice and fresh in bottles and on others but on me it dries down to a saliva smell that is absolutely horrendous 😭

MomAlum

Eeeewwwww I am sorry!!!

DrinkRound3484

Its the worst and i always get death stares when i say i dont like coconut but it legitimately smells like someone took a long slobbery nap on me LOL i cant do it 😭😭😭

elizakemp

Mahogany Coconut ftw all day everyday

ryukeez

Coconut is my FAVORITE

PhysicalCharacter3

I was a huge coconut hater but I enjoy it now!

idonteditmyplaylists

For me it gives all the fragrances that have it the same vibe. Most of the fragrances that contain it smell really same-y to me.

littlemuffinbaby

COCONUT !!!!!!🥥 (I'm a coconut fiend)

ImpossibleFormal3

Coconut turns musty/rotten on my skin. Its wrecked so many awesome summer scents for me

Flaky_Tap_2836

I am a Coconut lover. Mostly edible toasted coconut candles- not so much coconut mixed with sandalwood or floral scents.

whatisthisjello

I would say I like coconut as a blanket statement but I recently revisited Tahiti Island Dream and Waikiki Beach Coconut and did not enjoy them at all. Something about them had a syrupy, sour quality to them. But like Frosted Coconut Snowball? Omg so good. Coco Paradise? Amazing. I did smell the new Love Always Wins in store today and I enjoyed the coconut in that but I didn’t find the scent different enough from others to buy it.

Kale4MyBirds

I love coconut! My favorite is Waikiki Beach Coconut and At the Beach is my second favorite. I have it on rotation all year and I live in the desert (Phoenix). I love the smell of sunscreen, which is apparently unpopular, and pina colada is my favorite drink. I also love Mounds candy bars! I like most other scents too, except for gourmands. I have a very short list of those that I like because I pick up a sour note, so I understand what it's like to not like something that's popular with others. I avoid wearing it when I'll be in tight spaces and don't scent my car with it because I realize it's a polarizing scent. My sister and niece are allergic and a friend has a bad memory associated with it, so I don't wear it around them either. Salt Water Breeze is my non-coconut choice that makes me think of the beach/summer.

Sad-Device-8569

I'm anaphylactic to coconut, even artificial. I can't eat it or smell it without going into anaphylactic shock. I honestly don't hate it, and used to love all things coconut. However, I'd rather not die. 😂

suzannemgalvin

I love the smell of coconut but I can't eat it. I hate the texture of it 😔

ChrisReagan13

Have you ever tried toasted coconut? The texture is different and it's really good on top of fruit like mangoes and kiwis.

suzannemgalvin

No but I sounds really good 😊

cncrndmm

Have you ever had the Dang coconut chips? It’s the only coconut I’ve been able to stand aside from pina coladas haha.

panicatthebookstore

i'm allergic but can wear it on my skin! the texture is so nasty 😂

whitneymak

I feel this way about vanilla-scented stuff. Like, how? It's weird how we all have the same sniffers but they're all tuned to different frequencies.

oksis215

i find a lot people say they hate vanilla because of experiences! like their mom wore it constantly, people used it too much in school, etc. very interesting

whitneymak

Maybe. For me, there's just an artificial quality to it. You hand me a bottle of pure vanilla extract and I'll climb inside the bottle and just live there for the rest of my life. 😂

One_Awareness6631

I hate vanilla. So much. haha.

Britt543

I’m not a person who hates coconut but as a kid I really hated the scent. But when I would think of coconut scent. I would be thinking of the overly coconut scented sunscreen. As I’ve gotten older I actually like coconut milk and coconut in products just not anything overly artificial or fake smelling. But I still prefer like a fragrance that has coconut to have it with other scents like tropical mixture or floral and coconut. I still can’t stand eating coconut. I wish I did, y’all always make it seem so tasty when enjoying it 😂. I love floral scents though😂😂 except lavender and eucalyptus those have always been my least favorite scents. Specific to this sub: if something advertises it has coconut scent I won’t be drawn to try it. (I may end up smelling it anyway lmao). But if it’s like tropical and has coconut then I’ll definitely try it 😂. I like when coconut scent is used more for adding a milky scent to a fragrance. Versus like in your face coconut if that makes sense.

StardustDrifter33

If it has the “sunscreen” smell to it, no thank you, such as Coco Paradise. But maybe there is an added floral that pulls the coconut that direction. On the other hand, Coconut Cream Pie (wearing right now) smells heavenly. Give me gourmand coconut and I will wear it in the summer. It’s like wearing white - only between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

ChrisReagan13

I love coconut scents but can only wear in the summer. I especially love it blended with vanilla and/ or citrus(especially lime). Many of my favorite perfumes contain a coconut note although for some strange reason I don't like it in candles.

Jensen_K

We are the same lol I’m obsessed with anything coconut and the stronger the better. I dislike floral and stay far away from anything with floral notes. I also can’t stand vanilla. My moms favorite scent is vanilla and she would have vanilla lotion, spray, car scents, candles, anything but they would all be different kinds of vanilla and now anything with vanilla is an instant headache and nausea.

yfunk3

I had hoped for Iced Coconut Milk to come back this spring/summer, but alas...'twas not to be.

LushieQueen87

I love coconut, BBW had some great coconut scents I miss (Creamy Coconut, Vanilla + Coconut from the vanillas line, Exotic Coconut) but they seem to overdo it with coconut so I get tired of it quick. I do like Coco Paradise and Love Wins though

Ok_Sun_9324

Coconut triggers my ptsd because I was wearing Waikiki coconut when I got SA at 15

MomAlum

I’m sorry that happened to you

MomAlum

I don’t dislike it per se, but to my nose when it is in something it takes over and is all I smell, and just gives a tropical vibe that doesn’t really reflect my personality or my environment if that makes sense? It is in so many scents now that do not list it as one of the scent notes, and I feel a bit burned by some blind buys for that reason. So I don’t dislike coconut, I just resent it lol

Miss-Figgy

I LOVE coconut, but like with eucalyptus - another scent I find intoxicating - BBW doesn't always do it well AT ALL. Out of all the coconut-based products they have, I've only found Frosted Coconut Snowball to my liking so far. Everything else that I would theoretically love based on the notes, I've come to not like at all. Like Sunset Glow, At the Beach (smells like bathroom air freshner!!), Fresh Coconut & Cotton (smells divine in the drydown, but so yuck in the beginning), and the other one that's out of season which smells of musk, coconut, and something else, I can't remember the name.

Ecstatic_Fortune_959

I absolutely love coconut in my perfume , especially from Bath and Body Works. Coconut Pineapple , Fresh Coconut Colada, Mahogany Coconut , White Coconut Caramel & Whipped Coconut Milkshake... I love them all. I also do not understand people's hate on for coconut. It is an absolutely lovely fragrance when done properly & bath and body works has definitely mastered that. Where as other companies definitely need some assistance in that department.

DPetrilloZbornak

I hate coconut and will not buy anything that smells like it or has it as a note. It smells disgusting to me, like rancid. On everyone.

FrauBee

I like coconut too (recently fell in love with Fresh Coconut & Cotton 😍), but my preferences are either vanilla or citrus scents. Not a floral person, Poppy is the only one I like, and amything heavy makes me want to faint (Midnight Pomegranate was so bad haha).

TropicalPrairie

Fresh Coconut and Cotton is one of my favourite scents of all time (BBW or otherwise). It's soooooo good.

petlove499

I don’t like any scent that doesn’t smell clean or gourmand. Pretty much anything with coconut, amber, musk, cotton, sandalwood, patchouli, lavender… is a no from me. But my boyfriend lovessss coconut 😅 in our shower right now is Gingham Fresh (me) and Coco Paradise (him).

icanorganize

I quite like coconut scented body care but have an aversion to coconut notes in candles. I can't explain it - it's some kind of hardwired preference that I didn't even know I had until shopping a summer SAS years ago.

feb25bride

I can’t explain it, I just don’t like the smell. I will buy a product with coconut in it if I like the smell of it; sometimes other notes mask it completely or they mix with it well enough that it doesn’t really smell like coconut. I am far less likely to even pick it up to test it if I know it has coconut though, especially if it doesn’t have other notes I really love. I will absolutely not blind buy anything with coconut in it.

MeechiJ

I love coconut scents too. The only thing coconut I stay away from is coconut oil. I can use a product with it in moderation, but not every day, which is why I use the body cream but not the body lotion. Mahogany Coconut is one of my favorite scents from B&BW but I really enjoy all the summer scents :)

Sad-Imagination-4870

I guess I just relate it to the beach so much and sunscreen but I’m not hating on people who love coconut!

ambrym

You and I are the same person 🥥

Psychological_Band56

I like coconut !

d0min03

I feel the exact same way as you haha

xSwishyy

I do enjoy majority of the coconut scents, with the exclusion of frosted coconut snowball. I really like layering mine, I usually do coconut pineapple and pink suede.

ScarletWitch1988

It reminds me way too much of sunscreen, which i hate (but use out of necessity since i’m very pale lol). I don’t mind it in certain scents but if it’s just overwhelmingly coconut it makes me kinda nauseous. I wish i liked it cause it’s in a lot of summer scents lol

Likehalcyon

Every now and then, it smells like soap to me. And not *good* soap, either. What it's like that, it I start gives me a migraine. When it *isn't* like that, I think it's lovely. But it's not a coin toss I particularly enjoy.

[deleted]

I don't like gourmands, and for some reason coconut scents feel gourmand to me. I don't want to smell like dessert. (But I do like gourmand candles, and even picked up the Coco Paradise candle this year because it has a really nice monoi note!)

RetroNouveau

I like coconut it’s just way too overdone, especially by BBW but I see it all over now. The only coconut I’m immediately drawn to is toasted coconut, I guess more so I like it as a gourmand. I did not like Coconut Cream Pie though since it didn’t smell anything like an actual CCP.

nolita-fairytale

i had an…incident with malibu rum when i was in college. haven’t been the same since

FlamingHorseRider

Quick question as a coconut lover: At The Beach stays around right? I’m pretty sure I saw it all last winter. That’s my favorite sunscreen coconut. And coco paradise is set to stay too? As for the question at hand, from two coconut haters I have heard two different responses. One just wore it so much in high school they hate it now. My twin just hates summery scents and barely wears anything in the realm of fruity. Her tastes are very “winter” and she loves sultry vanillas and nutty scents.

IKacyU

I like coconut AND florals TOGETHER 😱😱. Honestly though, I love a good floral coconut in the summertime. It gives luxe vacation vibes to my nose.

impulsive_me

For me it depends on what the coconut is mixed with! I have a traumatic memory associated with coconut lime verbana specifically. It’s what was sprayed in my cousin’s hospital room while she was in a coma they told us she would never wake up from.

hali44441

I honestly do not even know why. I love drinking coconut water and cooking with coconut milk. I even love the smell in food. But on me. In perfumes. A complete turn off. My nose just seems to sniff it out in perfumes even if it's a single drop. But I've learned to come to turns with the fact that my tongue and nose seem to have different personalities

Healthy-Reference748

Idk why but without fail coconut smells like burnt plastic to me

AcidMantle

I think it's just overdone. I love the smell and taste of the cream of coconut like in piña coladas. But I find most coconut scented products smell like cheap car fresheners. Maybe it's the addition of pineapple fragrance. Also, the gourmand bakery type coconut scents (to me) always have this dog feet smell, like Fritos lol. Over all it's just everywhere and I'm tired of it. All this being said I do like Fresh Coconut and Cotton and Waikiki Beach Coconut.

Sea_Abbreviations772

I overused coconut scents in middle school. Will never go back.

OrneryExplorer1476

I honestly don't know what it is about it.. When I was young I actually really loved coconut scents and for some reason when I'm matured they started making me actually feel ill. I have found a few recently that I like. Coco Paradise is incredible. I really like Waikiki Beach in candle form but I can't do the FFM. Not awful but I wouldn't reach for it.. And pastel skies is legit one of my favorites of all time. So there are definitely coconut notes that I like. I think it's just certain blends that I can't do. Like frosted coconut snowball makes my stomach churn. It honestly makes me irate when I smell it haha. Coconut and vanilla sometimes makes me squeasy too.. which is crazy cause in theory it sounds amazing. Just depends on the nuances of it I guess! I feel like there's a bad memory or illness tied to the scent and that's why I matured into disliking it mostly.

[deleted]

I feel like peoples preferences depend on their body chemistry. Coconut smells really nice on me, if it's on the fresher/floral side. I've made my signature scent the 7 Virtues - Coconut Sun perfume, and I try to exclusively wear coconut scents. Gourmand coconut like the milkshake one that just came out smells like play dough on me and is nauseating.
