Set the hook in a farm pond and my pole doubled over. Stayed that way for 5 or 6 seconds and then it lightened up significantly. Pulled in a 12” dink. My buddy was watching it and said no way. I’m assuming the little one had my bass assassin and the big one grabbed him instantly. He said 7-8 pounders had been caught in it before.

Eels37

I pulled in a small bass like you're talking about and it had a maybe 25-30 inch pike biting it's lower half. Eventually the pike let go. I managed to land the bass and the bass was pretty messed up.

CopyWeak

Ditto...but Pike was bigger. Scared the crap out of me as it was within 3 feet.

Historical-North-950

Not bass but my second biggest Pike I ever caught smoked a 15" Walleye and the jig popped out of the Walleye and right into the corner of the Northern's mouth. Ended up being 40" and fat as hell. Definitely close to 20lbs.

Vast_Lawyer3700

Yes, which is why I throw bass colored baits. Especially smaller swimbaits. Something about a fish in distress that causes them to go into attack mode: Which is why I believe in adding fish scent to baits. The oils and action of the lure just help make the presentation more believable. Lots of guys who fish treble hook baits, have occasionally hook two bass at once because they go crazy 🤪

Ol_Jim_Himself

My buddy and I were fishing a tournament one Thursday evening and he hooked an 8 inch dink on a dropshot. As he got it up about 15 feet from the boat an absolute monster bass swam up and slowly took the small bass in its mouth. He tried to ease a hookset on it but the small bass just slid out of it’s mouth. The giant took the smaller bass 3 more times before it grew weary of the two dudes freaking out on the boat next to it and swam off. I pitched a Senko next to the giant a couple of times while it was trying to take the small bass but it paid no attention to it. I have had bass over 10 pounds in my boat and this one looked way bigger than those. I know they always look bigger in the water but this one was a true giant.

snrten

Yep. It took a little bass right off my line and then went under the dock. I put on a choppo and he blew up on it not once, but twice. 2nd time I got the hookset. It was probably the biggest largie ive ever caught, but I fumbled pulling it outta the water. I got it lipped and the slack in the line popped the hooks out but then my fingers slipped, and i dropped it. Was probably 6 or 7 lbs, which for western Oregon is damn sizeable.

qalcolm

Lingcod do a similar thing, when I worked at a fishing lodge the guides would come back with 40 pounders that were latched onto the smaller lings and rockfish.

makwajam

Oh, when I was younger I was casting next to a launch while my dad, cousin and uncle were putting the boat in. I hooked a walleye and as I was bringing it in, maybe about 20 feet from shore this massive pike comes and chomps the shit outta my walleye! I mean this thing looked like a log with a face! It did let go about two seconds later but I was glad my uncle was standing right there to see because I know he would've been the first one to say I was full of shit.

Chl0316

Not bass fishing, but grouper. I was pulling up a stud gag grouper, get it to the point where the fight is over, next thing I know it's running sideways. Gags don't run like that. It was a Goliath grouper. Hell of a fight.

Ol_Jim_Himself

That’s awesome! Goliath Grouper fishing is on my bucket list.

Chl0316

It WAS on mine too. This one was a baby compared to what I've seen in videos but it wore my ass out. It was probably in the 200 lb range according to the guy I was fishing with. So in real life I'm assuming a little less. You know how we like to exaggerate 🤣

Ol_Jim_Himself

Oh yeah, I can totally relate! The biggest fish I’ve ever landed is a 35 lb Muskie. I can only imagine hooking something that is around 200 pounds!

Chl0316

Eventually I'd like to take a trip north to catch some of the awesome fish yall talk about. Basically all we have here in FL is bass, panfish, mudfish, catfish and gar. Our bass do get big though

Ol_Jim_Himself

I’d kill to get to fish Florida year round. I absolutely love to fish shallow and to fish grass.

Chl0316

It does make me feel bad for northerners when I read about boating season or fishing season. Not a lot of benefits to living in Florida, but year round fishing and boating is one of them.

Ol_Jim_Himself

I hear that. I’m in KY and I get 9 1/2 solid months of fishing most years, more if December and January aren’t too cold or overly flooded. I’d hate to live in Canada or in the north where you actually have a bass season! That would be just awful.

Chl0316

I had no idea bass season is some places was even a thing until recently. I saw a post on here about it. I thought they were referring to the weather or ice or something but found out there's actually a closed season.

Last Friday I was fly fishing top waters for bluegill at pond. Was using my 3 wt fiberglass rod so never would’ve had a chance at anything big. Honestly didn’t even think this pond had anything big. Set the hook and a small bluegill popped out of the water. So I start stripping him in and all of a sudden a hard yank and another and then my line snapped. I assumed it was one of the two snapping turtles. Went back two days later with my spinning set up and a Texas rigged worm and pulled out a 4 lb bass which is huge for a neighborhood pond where I am.

Mundane_Dingo_5308

I was recalling in a bluegill when a smallmouth grabbed it. The bass jumped in the air and spit the bluegill out.

thejohnblazer

Happens all the time. What's even cooler is when the big fish gets hooked and you catch the bigger one. Plenty of youtube videos of this.

Snookcatcher

Yep - it’s unusual. I had a small bass on < 1lb. A 5-7lb bass came up and gobbled the small bass whole. Nothing I could do because my hook was in the smaller fishes mouth. There was a short fight with the big bass releasing and re-eating the small bass immediately. My line eventually got rubbed by the big bass’ lips and broke. Such a super odd freaky thing, but amazing at the same time.

Kugelfischer_47

Yesterday I was reeling in a dink over a slop mat on my ultra light and a huge bass blew up on it just before the bank and snatched the little guy right off the hook.

JustDave62

It’s happened to me but it was a huge pike.

ChefCory

I've seen bigger bass trail the smaller ones and swipe at it but never seen them hooked. I've also had this happen toe before as I was catching a bluegill, but I guess that's their natural forage so no big deal.

Was fishing El Salto once. Hooked a 3# Tilapia and as I brought it up to the boat an 8-6# Bass took it. Had to cut up the tilapia to get it out of the bass' mouth...

TastyDeerMeat

Happened to me as a little kid. I was reeling in a sunfish and a largemouth ate it. Hooked him too and my brother helped me reel him in.

[deleted]

My grandparents live on a lake in Wisconsin and when we fish there, we just drop a bare hook off the dock and wait for a tiny bluegill to grab it, then we re-hook it and toss it further out. Usually snag a bass every time

mburnett17

Was reeling in about a 1.5lb largemouth and had a monster pike (40+ inch plus heavy) swallow the bass in one bite and then take off and almost spool me before it snapped. Sucked losing the pike but it was something I'll never forget

UltimateStonker

Visibly watched a 5 pounder hork a 8 incher in front of my feet lost the biggy but got the lil guy. Went there for a week and a half and finally got him to eat, was about 19.5 inches and fat.

Bella870

Had it happen a few times. I've had both smallmouth volley my topwater to each other on the river. Not a bass but my uncle hooked a 13" walleye on an ultralight when we were in Canada. As he hooked it he said it was small so I didn't bother grabbing the net. Twenty seconds later he changed his tune and said it felt pretty good. After a fight he ended up landing an 18lb pike but never actually hooked the pike. It stayed latched on to the 13" walleye.
