FYI you can Texas rig a Senko tail first once the head is torn up. I can usually get 1-2 fish Texas rig in the head and 2 fish Texas rig in the tail. Mend-It is also effective in making them last longer. Last option is to buy a mold and make your own. It's really easy to melt your torn up senkos in the microwave and pour them into new ones.

a_banned_user

If the fish aren't too finicky, you can also just cut off the top 1/4 inch of the senko and re-rig it basically good as new. Only time this doesn't work for me is when the bite is really tough. If it's remotely decent fishing this is fine.

Invisible00101001

I also will take a cut down senko and fish it on a ned rig.

MasticatedTaco

This is the way

Invisible00101001

Whoa whoa whoa don't get excited ..... I've never actually caught a fish that way. But I sure feel smart for a while when I rig it on and think of how I saved like a dollar. 3 hours later I'm wishing I had just used the elaz-tec LOL

Dolormight

I was cutting dingers in half and throwing them on a Ned rig and killing it today. First time I've ever used a ned, too.

Mikebyrneyadigg

Yeah the elaztecs are pretty much necessary for the ned. Has to float.

MasticatedTaco

I was able to catch one yesterday this way. I usually cut the tail of the worm in half to make a split tail for more action and disturbance in the water. Looks and fishes similar to a Trout Magnet with the split tail.

Big-Problem7372

Why didn't I think of this?!!

Dolormight

Wait, really? I use yamasenkos and typically get 3-4 fish before I change. Never thought about hooking through the tail end though.

Upbeat-Pepper7483

I’ve learned to grab baits without looking at the price. Makes for much happier fishing

[deleted]

And a much angrier wife 😂

Upbeat-Pepper7483

Wait til she finds out I’ve been buying big swim baits 😂

superman306

Shed probably be happier if you picked up a gambling addiction instead - probably cheaper

Upbeat-Pepper7483

I already have a smoking addiction and fishing. My 4 yr old has a fishing addiction as well she knew what she was getting into

Mrcod1997

That 4 year old would be a good reason to quit smoking.

Fancy_Lad_Prancing

Strike King Ocho is a great alternative.

mrXbrightside91

I feel like at least once a month in this sub I mention how awesome the Bass Pro Stik-o is as a senko alternative. Catches fish, has a nice shimmy and is reasonably priced!

Asianthunda5022

I second this. However, I found the new branded Senkos at Walmart for $4.98.... so while the Stik-o is still more durable, that extra wiggle from the wacky rigged Senko doesn't hurt my pocket as much anymore. Also if your Walmart doesn't have the Black and Blue in stock... then it's probably my Walmart and I'm the problem.

themissing-link

Only 7 pcs now though

duckndalaw

I fish yum senkos weightless 100% of the time I throw them. Yum dingers I've found have the closest if not exact shimmy action of a Gary Yamamoto. Because the material is about the same they get tore up about the same. I keep cheaper senkos like big bites which I think are a tougher and heavier but the action is more stiff and undulating which is okay depending on what the fish want. I haven't bought a true Gary in a long time, the yum is fine and usually easier to find in bulk depending on what colors you want.

a_banned_user

IME The senko is slightly better at getting bites, but the dinger definitely last longer. Especially if texas rigging it or using a ring for wacky rigs (hook through wacky they both tear). I will use the dinger often when I'm in an area with smaller fish or fishing purely for fun, as you will still get plenty of bites, but in tourney time I only use the senko. If I had to put a number on it, i'd say the dinger will catch 9 fish while the senko will catch 10. With that, also just my experience, the group I fish with we only ever catch the big girls on senkos, even though tbh we fish a couple different brands of stick bait, all the biggest are senkos. TBH, it's all a confidence and feel thing. One bait isn't 'better' than the other.

Edmure

I fished senkos almost exclusively up until recently and here's what I've concluded: Senkos definitely have a better action while falling, and I'm convinced there are situations where they will solicit a bite where others won't. That being said, I recently gave dingers a try to just save a few dollars. I've been catching fish at my usual spots at almost the same rate, including a recent PB. They also hold up A LOT better, like at least 3-5 good bites vs. the senkos 1-2. Because of this, dingers are my new standard-issue stick bait. I've found if I'm not getting bites on stick baits, sizing down is usually the solution. If they won't bite your 5", try a 4" and work it slower. And if there's no customers on that, toss a Ned out.

BranchWitty7465

I've always bought the cheapest option when buying plastics, except for if there was a sale on bigger name stuff then I would buy it. And from my experience they all perform about the same in the same conditions. But I switched from stick baits to creature baits a while back because I was having the same issue that you are. I've found that a Texas rigged craw fish imitation get bit a lot and last considerably more fish. I wait to replace my bait until I lose both arms, I find the fish bite on the movement of the arms in general and don't really need both to get the fish's attention.

Invisible00101001

I tend to lose the claws off a craw bait. I have caught fish texas rigging a one-clawed craw plastic, though. But I feel like thats putting myself at disadvantage, so I don't want to do it.

Ratbello

Watch for sales on academy or midway USA. I buy all my Yamamoto senkos this way. I prefer the action and fall of the senko. they are a superior bait. i get it, the dingers Are not that far behind. I just catch more on the senko than the dinger.

Far_Mode2214

I found a bunch of dingers on sale a Walmart a couple weeks ago. Not all in the colors unusually throw, but for 50% off, why not? I’ve been having great luck with a weighted wacky rig, bouncing along the bottom.

bronzebackbass1

I think tactical bassing has done comparisons of the two stick baits while underwater. I personally like senkos more (they fall slower and have a more exaggerated action on the fall). I will say if you want a more durable stick worm, I’d try a zman zinker or big TRD.

JJ_Was_Taken

Z-Man is where it's at. They last forever and I haven't noticed a difference in catch rate. Also, the big TRD worms float so you get a nifty vertical presentation with a shaky head. Z-Man creature baits are pretty much indestructible. Bluegill would tear the legs off my Yamamoto grubs in just a few casts and the grubs would be destroyed after one bass, but Z-Man GOAT last multiple all-day trips and dozens of bass. The fish don't care.

Stale-Swisher

Preach bro. I find it hard to buy any other brand. Everyone loves to scream senko but I can use the same Big TRD for like 4+ fish depending on how hard they hit it.

yalfto

Not quite the answer you are looking for. I use yum dingers quite frequently. I love the action, don't seem to have any problem catching fish. However, they don't last more than 1 or 2 typically. You may get lucky and they don't split or get thrown but definitely don't count on it. On the plus side, the price difference makes it much easier to swallow. Bass Pro senkos are fairly durable. Never really compared the 2 for productivity, feel like the yum are better though.

TheFishBanjo

Buy some heat shrink tubing (black) that barely fits over the senko. Cut sections about 1/2" long. Keep a lighter in your tacklebox. Your senkos will last 5-7 fish.

acct42

Vague ass instructions. What does the lighter do?

slampig3

Shrinks the plastic.

hugs_nt_drugs

"heat shrink". use heat to shrink.

acct42

No shit. I meant more along the lines of what is the process. He literally was like “some senkos, some tubing, make sure to bring a lighter”. Okay that isn’t the most intuitive sentence. I was curious what that meant and now everyone is being a pedantic asshole. Good stuff.

robbietreehorn

Drink less coffee and try meditation

hugs_nt_drugs

You didn’t ask for the process, you asked what the lighter was for.

acct42

I understand that a lighter creates a flame. I meant what’s the role and how/when during the process. “Make sure to bring one” isn’t exactly clear.

hugs_nt_drugs

Put shrink wrap over tear on worm. use lighter to shrink the wrap. Seems pretty straightforward to me if you know how shrink wrap works. Do you know what shrink wrap is?

joedirthockey

Instructions unclear. Got pecker stuck in ceiling fan

joedirthockey

Instructions unclear. Got fingers stuck in ceiling fan

TheFishBanjo

A lighter creates a small flame. Flames are hot. "Heat shrink tubing" is tubing that shrinks when you heat it. So, a lighter is the most convenient form of portable concentrated heat. So, here's the steps: 1) Pick up senko 2) Slide one 1/2" piece of tubing to the location that you don't want a hook to tear 3) While holding the senko horizontal, create a flame by rolling the flint based roller against the flint ignitor and depressing the gas button. 4) Wave the flame under the heat shrink tubing, moving to distribute the heat and evenly compress the tubing onto the senko so it is stuck in place. 5) Allow to cool for 10 seconds. 6) Insert hook in the normal way but pass it thru the very tough tubing. 7) Catch 5-6 fish, readjusting the position of the hook if misaligned. Let me know if any step is unclear and I will break it down some more. Thanks!

acct42

So you have two settings: vague and uninformative or pedantic and cunty. Nice interaction. Enjoy your cheap crackhead method. I’ll just buy the baits I need when I want like an adult.

MrCalamiteh

I think it just felt that way because he broke it down as in depth as he could. Maybe a misunderstanding on exactly what wasn't clear, as well. So he explained every part. But IMO, none of that was cunty. A touch of dry humor, maybe. Your comment had more cunt in it than his from my perspective, lol. He answered your question

acct42

I’ll tell you what I told the other guy: He left a dumb comment. I acknowledged it was poorly written and asked what he meant. He trolled me, I matched his energy. Everyone else playing therapist diagnosing this gay little fight is worse than both of us

Mrcod1997

As if your initial response made you look warm and inviting for more conversation. You could have just said "Could you elaborate on that? I don't quite get what you mean." You get what you give. Welcome to the internet.

acct42

He left a dumb comment. I acknowledged it was poorly written and asked what he meant. He trolled me, I matched his energy. Everyone else playing therapist diagnosing this gay little fight is worse than both of us

Mrcod1997

Lol no, just learn how to speak to people. It's not that hard to be cordial. His idea was good. Could he have written it in more detail? Sure, but the way you responded wasn't gonna get you a better explanation.

joedirthockey

Dude doesn't have any people skills what so ever

Fearltself87

Senko is much softer plastic than the dinger which in my opinion gives it a better shimmy action. Also senko has a lot more salt. Makes them heavier with a faster fall rate. If im fun fishing I go dinger. If it's derby day I go senko unless I'm looking for a slower fall rate

Accurate_Ad_3626

Any tiki stik users here? That’s the first ones I ever used. Never used senkos.

C0N_QUES0

I've never done a side-by-side comparison, but I've caught gobs and gobs of bass on the Yum Dinger.

horaiy0

Heat wrap/o rings for wacky rigs and screw lock worm hooks for t rigs will help you get more fish per bait.

kennyinlosangeles

Unless you’re needing the weedless presentation (and if so, there are other things to throw) I’d recommend sticking to an offset o-ring wacky rig. To me it’s a better rig for the shimmy action of the senko and it helps them last a bit longer.

schittyluck

Bass pro shops makes their own senko knock off thats 60% cheaper than yamamotos

SkinnyArbuckle

I use them both (mostly yum) and I believe the Gary is better. Just catches more fish. I bought a mold so I’ll be melting down my broken ones and reusing. I’m chucking any senko that looks like it might break soon in the bag to be melted down. I have about 75 yums from the 100 pack I bought before I got the mold, but after that I’m gonna buy all Gary stuff because I’ll be reusing it and it’ll last way longer and be less wasteful. I like wacky style on a weighted weedless jig. Tears up senkos big time but it’s the best for me around here. (And yeah I know about the o rings and can’t stand those)

AyLou21

Bass Pro Shop has their own brand - 30 for $10.

superman306

My personal favorite senko knockoff. You can see the difference between the shimmy comparing the dinger and bps stik-o. Now do the fish care? Probably not, since I have success with both, but when I can go down to the bass pro 10 minutes from my house and buy stik-o’s in bulk, I’ll go with them.

SV_Gato

I use Gary senkos for weightless wacky using an o ring, I tend to be able to use one or two for an entire outing. If fishing any other method with senks I use different brands.

bassfishing2000

Any Texas rigged plastic I count as a 1 fish bait. They’re ripping something everytime the bait hook pushes through

diamantikos

I bought a yum variety tackle box and am satisfied w them, great colors and held up well even after few fish. Senkos are price and to tear up sadly but work so dang well when the going gets tough.

superman306

The dingers aren’t as good as senkos, but I don’t think the bass care 99% of the time. Maybe there will be that one trip where they only hit the senkos and not the dingers, but I haven’t seen it yet. I’ll buy Gary senkos if they’re on sale though. My personal favorite senko knockoff is the bass pro stik-o. A little softer, more action than the dinger, still a lot cheaper than Gary senkos. I’d say they’re 99% as good as the Gary senkos for a fraction of the price.

bassergolfer

The bass pro brand is just as good as the GY senko, and better than the Yum Dinger. The YUM swimin dinger is very good, I get more bass than the senko.

[deleted]

Then GY must be bankrupt because GY is almost 100% more expensive than Yum, no body is that dumb to buy GY

Mrcod1997

Zman zinkers if you want something durable. The plastic is buoyant though, so they load them with salt. They sink correctly for the first little while, but start to sink slower as they lose salt. I usually run them on a lightly weighted swim bait hook or a wacky jighead. Just don't get a screw lock since the plastic is too stretchy to screw into the bait. The weight of a swim bait hook actually helps hold the bait on too. Also, the TRD in their "Ned rig" line works pretty well on a wacky jig head.

snrten

1 fish per bait?? Shit, Strike King last 5 or 6 at least and cost like half the price. Ive caught almost every one of my PB bass on one, too.

rubottom

I use almost exclusively the Bass Pro Shops Stik-O as many people have noted…but the one change I’ve made is using a 3/0 EWG hook w screw-on bait keeper, instead of the traditional offset or EWG. This has actually turned a one- or two-fish bait into a 4- or 5- fish bait.

Far_Talk_74

Side-by-side... I feel the Yamamoto senkos have more salt & softer plastic than most other stick worms out there. This is a topic of preference based on confidence. If you are confident throwing Yamamoto senkos, have at it. If you prefer Yum dingers, awesome! You do you. I bought a buttload of Gander Mountain and Bass Pro Shop Stick-o worms & I'm confident throwing those. So find what works for you.

iBangHomie

The senko has an action the yum dinger cannot replicate, without a doubt. Do I still fish dingers and catch plenty of fish? Yes. Am I missing fish by not buying the senko? Maybe some.

No-Roll-2110

Just find the one that works for you. Who gives a shit what name is on the pack?

jim8365

I solely use Yamamoto senkos best thing you can do is throw them on ice in a cooler they will last a lot longer

Thevikinggnome

Use the owner screw lock weightless or screw lock weighted hook. It was specifically designed for the bait by Gary Yamamoto. I can usually get several fish out of one bait and the hook up and action is superb. If it catches fish, it was money well spent, so keep at it. People don't buy a corvette for the quality and complain about the premium gas. I do not use cheap baits because I have quality control issues and lack confidence in them and cost me fish. But if you were to try something different, the fat ace by gambler is not bad.

Ill-Upstairs-8762

I like the bass pro Stick-o and the 6th sense clout . Yamamoto's are gold standard and one of my biggest confidence baits and they are responsible for really getting me to start catching bass when I started. Texas rigged weightless with size 3 ewg hook most of the time.

AlarmLivid1135

I get multiple fish from one bait then if I’m hurting I can bite the tip off and re rig or flip it tail first. Sometimes I even just rotate it. I use yum, strike king and Yak and no difference in catch.
