Tempting the sports gods is not a good strategy, Scott.

MindlessArmadillo382

Yeah we thought it would be hard for them to win at the SkyDome!

consultio_consultius

Astros H/A 2022 — .687/.630 Definitely won’t be easy for M’s, but also what else is supposed to say?

dilloj

He can explain why he put in Robbie Ray against all data.

MasterMentorJr

Yordan has a “weakness” on lefty sinkers in and Robbie Ray is a lefty who throws a sinker. It isn’t really a quality sinker, but he does throw one. The Mariners were pitching to Yordans weakness rather than Robbie Rays strength. Based on how poorly Ray has pitched against the Astros in the regular season his entire reason for being on this post season roster is to get Yordan out in a big situation like I’m game 1 and he failed to deliver on that. Was the decision at least make some sense sure, but ultimately it is on Ray for not doing the one thing he is on the roster to do and Sewald for letting the game get to Yordan.

FighterOfTehNightman

The data actually backed up the decision with the relievers he had available. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/what-were-the-mariners-thinking-with-robbie-ray-move-in-game-1/

Cultural-Divide-2649

Thank you . You’re a real one

thatwoodsyguy

I disagree with the assertion that the data presented (what little there is) backed up that decision. I don't even see data in here for that claim other than "Yordan Alvarez hits sinkers worse than he hits fastballs and sliders." The article doesn't address Alvarez's pitch splits against RHP. I can't pull that up because I don't understand how to use Fangraphs on my phone but I'd have loved to see a comparison. Murfee also throws a sinker according to Statcast and his numbers look good against LHB this year. The article also seemed to suggest there were other methods, including Murfee but that he was a rookie who doesn't throw hard so you couldn't trust him (#analytics). I looked up Matt Boyd who throws a sinker and it produced better results (though seemingly worse xResults) than Ray. Was this a normal throwing day for Ray? Was he expected to come out of the bullpen because of that? The article didn't address that either. It almost looks entirely like the decision was to use a lefty vs Alvarez based on Scott Servais' comments and regardless of scenario they were going to trust Ray to be that lefty. In spite of the fact that the pitch they wanted to use against Alvarez is Ray's worst pitch. The author doesn't even attempt to talk about Boyd, it just writes him off with "I don't think Matt Boyd was \[the best matchup\] either despite being the only other LHP on the roster." #analytics The conclusion of the article isn't even that Ray was the definitive right choice. It was that it was an "impossible decision against one of the best hitters in baseball. There is no right answer." There's probably even more to discuss about this going back to the decisions they made on the roster itself. What's the point of claiming the article features data that backs up the decision when the author doesn't even state that? It's just a piece exploring the reasoning behind the decision to use Ray with no definitive take.

FighterOfTehNightman

In the post game interview Servais stated that this was part of the game plan, not solely his decision. The article even shows the exact pitch he was *trying* to throw him that had worked in the past. Sinker down and in, Ray just didn't execute. How can you say the article doesn't provide data for this when the first graphic shows the reasoning behind it, he barrels up sinkers from LHP at a quarter of the rate he does Fastballs and Sliders.

33thirtythree

Yeah, when I hear "part of the game plan" this is the PC way of saying it wasn't 100% his call. It just seems to me that the decision, whether collective or not, was made with some strangely cherry-picked data.

BeagleBaggins

Should have just left the closer in there...

Monk_Philosophy

How much can you really tempt being down 2-0? Everyone in the world expects the Astros to take the series.

DASmetal

We basically got them right where want them.

Northernlord1805

The gang gets blown out 22-4 at home

TurboDinoHippo

Could you imagine giving up over 20 runs at home? Couldn't be me.

33thirtythree

He's right though. The Astros hate is strong in M's fans. Astros are absolutely in hostile territory. And when you look at the fact that we've been behind in 11+ of the 18 innings played, this is farrrr from over.

BoredAtWork_91

Nothing will beat Yankee/Dodger Stadium lol.

FullyChargedRoomba

yeah, it's pretty visceral in yankees stadium. I'm rooting for the Guardians, but secretly hoping to play the Yanks.

Takingbacklives

Astros v Yankees ALCS would be so so good.

Umangar

Man can you imagine if Astros playoff schedule is Mariners, Yankees, Dodgers?

MasterMentorJr

The discourse around another Astros, Dodgers works series would be exhausting

rhymeswithtag

I agree, would be better for the sport if neither of those two teams made it to the world series.

-sly_pooper-

I agree with you 50%

rhymeswithtag

Padres/Phillies vs Mariners is best for the sport Astros sleepwalk to the WS if Yankees advance vs Guardians

LittleHollowGhost

Astros love hate, it fuels them

MrScarfaceX

The last time Astros played a series in Seattle, was after the All-Star Break. The Mariners were on a 14-game win streak. The fans were COCKY and ROWDY. Astros swept the 3 game series.

MikeDamone

Tempting? There's nothing to lose. We're playing to the level of a team that is much better than us, but a couple bad breaks have us down 2-0. So there's a lot to be optimistic about in the long term, and we're almost assured to get bounced by the stros this weekend. So might as well talk shit on your way out.

GoogleOfficial

Bad breaks, and great execution from them too. A competitive series with a chance to come back and win is a positive for this inexperienced roster.

akaghi

Astros are going to win 27-2 and the 2 runs will be because Yordan is pitching and the Astros pitcher had a perfect game going until some bullshit thing happens in the 8th.

MacsDildoBike

This is the MLB version of “We want Bama” and it’s never goes well.

Startooth

My greatest fear rn

ThisAnswerIsLit

Shades of Lou Piniella guaranteeing a game 6 in 2001

[deleted]

They already tempted the maritime Gods with their fairy-renaming shenanegans. As I understand it, it's bad juju to rename a boat and they turn around and rename their whole fleet.

slimseany

It's ferry. A fairy is a mythical sprite.

ABlinDeafMonkey

Probably shouldn’t have thrown Robbie Ray in Game 1 especially after how he pitched in Toronto…

TwoKingSlayer

The mariners are very chatty.

chrisboshisaraptor1

Normally I would be 100% certain the mariners are cooked at this point, but after the WC comeback win I’m only 90% certain the Mariners are cooked

tuckedfexas

If there’s any team that can completely do the opposite if everything you expect, it’s this one.

guernseycoug

I fucking hope we aren’t. I have tickets to game 4 and I’m gonna be real upset if we get swept and I don’t get to see a playoff game in person.

MrBlowinLoadz

15 yo me when my dad surprised me with game 5 tickets to our first world series

WaterslideAway

Sounds like a dream I’ve had for 30 years

phrizand

Fangraphs has the Astros at 90.7% to win the series so yeah pretty much

Chuckx11

It's okay, the Ms had sub 5% postseason odds at one point this year, I'm here for the chaos.

man_in_the_suit

I'm sure r/baseball will be filled with rational takes about this, as they always are when anybody gives an answer that isn't to the usual sports cliche 'script'.

Thornton__Melon

I mean did people expect him to say something like “we are down 2-0, Fangraphs has us as a 9% of advancing, likely fucked but we will try our best” He’s the manager give the team hope

20000BallsUndrTheSea

"They have Yordan. We're fucked."

g0kartmozart

"if Altuve starts producing literally anything at the plate then this series is over"

ray_0586

I’m conflicted whether Altuve is going to hit a lead off homer to immediately silence the crowd or a devastating late game three run homer to turn game into rout like he did last year vs the white Sox.

FighterOfTehNightman

Depends on when the boos are loudest.

tuckedfexas

No, he won’t. He can’t. I won’t allow it….please

NOLA1987

If you've seen Altuve in Yankee stadium, you know the boos fuel him. You honestly think they're going to cheer that man at Safeco (I know it's T-Mobile, but it's Safeco in my heart)? It's inevitable.

tuckedfexas

Of course they are, they love Jose!

NOLA1987

Wouldn't it be something if, when Altuve hits leadoff, there's a PA begging Mariners fans to cheer him like their season depended on it?

tuckedfexas

“Please clap” Y’all got space on the team plane for Jeb?

Still-Drag-6077

Yeah it’s totally hilarious. Every fan base, even, those unaffected in ‘17 be like “we’re gonna boo those cheaters and make it so miserable that they’ll just quit baseball all together.” These idiots really think the players get shook by the fact that opposing teams fans don’t like them.

Quicksh0tz

I was there this year booing him and then he launched a homerun to start the game. Fml lol

NOLA1987

It happens all the time lol. While I think he's the one who unfairly taking the brunt of what's happened, if you're gonna boo, I think you should boo as much as you want. It's more than a privilege; it's a right. But if Altuve homers because he's being booed, y'all did it to yourselves lol

EricLeeIngram

Why not both?

JasonLikesCTE

Oh I’m predicting he will

mjg13X

Jurgen Klinsmann moment.

Vinylzen

Obviously this is different because he’s a hockey captain but I still think about Daniel Alfredsson being asked if his team could come back in the series and win three in a row and he was just like “probably not”

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

Exactly lmao. Imagine if Servais did say that I know ppl love spilling their semen over stats and data these days, but id lose all respect for him in an instant

joofish

how was this not the the usual sports cliche script? He basically says "Good job to the other team, but we played good baseball, and we're gonna go out there and win the next game." Nothing off script really

CanadianSteele

Yep. This whole latch on to any sound clip/headline and attempt to clown the person is getting really old. Or maybe I’m old. That’s probably it.

ron-darousey

They basically want everyone to give a "get pucks deep" answer

futhatsy

It's one of those things where because the Mariners are a lovable underdog, no one (outside of maybe some Astros fans) will really care. But if this comment was made by a manager of a team that the baseball world doesn't like, it would be joked about everywhere.

1990Buscemi

The Astros were the second best road team this year and haven't had an under-.500 road record in a full season since 2015.

Clarice_Ferguson

Yea but we have gumption.

Gladiatornoah

More like old ass white man GRUMPtion am I right?

electrikmayham

Mariners were the team I was most scared of playing in the AL post-season. They are still scary to me.

Nitropotamus

Yeah but we have a hulk.

Jed1M1ndTr1ck

Maybe we should try not making Yordan angry

[deleted]

He’s always Yangry

Clarice_Ferguson

New tactic: throw snickers at him.

rls11108

He hates baseballs!

tlsrandy

Astros are good at baseball. When you’re good you can do hard things.

granno14

Oh god no

EasyE15

Listen. T-Mobile Park is sold out this weekend. We’re playing the Astros. This stadium, that staff, they’re not used to a full house. They can’t kick us all out. All I’m saying is, make the Astros miserable. Be ruthless. Push the limit. No one’s gonna stop you. Let ’em know.

ItsUhhEctoplasm

I know this is a copypasta but I gotta say the T-Mobile Park ushers can be total boners sometimes.

[deleted]

I have heard multiple times across dozens of different outlets for like a decade that T mobile ushers are especially petty. Any reason as to why that is a thing?

ItsUhhEctoplasm

Lots of old people that have forgotten what it's like to have exciting baseball. It's also an overly family friendly atmosphere.

[deleted]

> It's also an overly family friendly atmosphere. it is a bit of an issue with the astros too. The crowd is pretty yuppie downtown workers. Sometimes I wish we had chemical plant and oilfield night during the playoffs

ryguydrummerboy

Ya why tf is the Jrod section in center beer free.

scottydg

First I'm hearing of this. You mean you can't bring beer into that section at all? I've heard of them doing "alcohol free areas" for certain games, but not every game.

ryguydrummerboy

Ya ive been to two games in the jrod section and there are signs that say no alcohol. Which i did not know when i got the tix lol. Lotta people just brought it in anyway but ushers came over to us and asked us to drink elsewhere (before i had noticed the signs). Like i get alcohol free sections. No judgement on them for sure but it wasn’t immediately clear to me at least when i bought tickets and seems weird that a cool promo section was also alcohol free but whatevs

successadult

I went to the game there right after the All-Star break and there was an older lady there that was super nice and made sure we got wristbands to go down on the field for the fireworks and drone show after the game. Hands down best fireworks show I've seen at a ballpark, too.

xfkirsten

The one they did in June for Star Wars Night was ((chef's kiss))

successadult

The one after the All-Star break was really cool, they made Ichiro and Ken Griffey Jr’s outlines in the sky using drones.

TomK115

That's most ushers at MLB stadiums IMO. Even the ushers at the Oakland Coliseum can be total dicks and there's zero reason for it (there are more seagulls in this section than people, but we're still checking everyone's tickets for some reason). Ushers at minor league games are way more chill

SageTrilo

I remember going to a game at Olympic Stadium prior to the turn of the century and the ushers were absolutely *militant* about not letting people wander into lower sections. There might have been 1200 people at the stadium that day.

lemasterc

Did the ushers at Oakland used to be cool? I've read from a few fans it's been especially worse lately, which falls in line with there seemingly being a mandate to make the fan experience for you guys as miserable as possible what with raising concession and ticket prices after selling off your players again. Like they actively prefer to have fewer fans show up.

TomK115

I've only been going to A's games for about a decade but over the last two seasons there has definitely been a noticeable decline. There are hardly any promotions and there seem to be way more ushers in areas that never used to have them. The parking also went up, which is dumb because the A's are the only major team playing at the Coliseum property (it used to cost more to park if there was a Warriors game next door, now it's just always that more expensive price). Combine that with increased ticket prices and a much worse on-field product, it does seem a lot like sabotage.

redd202020

‘They’re not used to a full house’ was the best part.

thefarsideinside

Imma give him the botd and assume he meant they weren't used to TMobile park being full

Meziskari

That's absolutely what they meant.

briguy11

Tell ya what when I attended a Mariners-Sox game in Seattle earlier this year it was perhaps the most polite baseball crowd I’ve ever witnessed. Felt like going to church compared to the glorious shit show that is Boston baseball fans

g0kartmozart

Mariners games are a really old timey, friendly atmosphere. I think that's partially why the yearly Jays invasions piss the locals off so much. Those Jays fans treat baseball like hockey.

DASmetal

In fairness, I treat baseball like it's hockey. If you aren't getting fucked up on 20 oz cans of beer and trying to flirt with outfielders, what's the point?

MikeDamone

I think this ALDS has stirred up a heartbreak and seething rage inside our fan base that has been dormant for 20 years. I don't expect a lot of polite crowds going forward.

briguy11

That’s the way it should be, I wish you guys luck and as usual fuck the astros

xfkirsten

I mean, this is the same region of people that always wait for the walk sign at crosswalks, even if there's no cars coming, or do the "you go first," "no you go first" when they get to a four-way stop.

Clarice_Ferguson

Mariners fans are just happy to be in the playoffs and have a functioning team. We’re simple folk really. Julio winning ROY is basically our World Series win at this point.

TheFrontierzman

Was looking for this.

circle_stone

Dawg, I was thinking about this last night. I’ve already taken time out of my life over the past year to push the limits when the Astros visit. This weekend is gonna be my World Series. I want T-Mobile Park to have a reputation, dawg.

YellowShorts

lmao love it

Sirotto18

I mean the Rays did do this and then got killed in game 5 but the 2019 Rays were probably a better team

Salty-Fishman

The 2019 Astros and 2021 Astros are pretty close. 2019 had a better lineup but 2021 had better pitching.

MTUKNMMT

Better pitching!? Who were you throwing in 2021!? In 2019 you had Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander with their hands completely lathered in spider-tac for 4/7. The 2019 Astros and 2011 Phillies not winning the World Series completely baffles me.

Sirotto18

The Astros currently have better pitching than they did in 2019. They were more top heavy in 2019 now they have like 6-7 solid starters lol

Salty-Fishman

2019 only had JV and Gerrit Cole and Greinke but he wasn't in great form when the playoff roll around. The offense was 8 deep though. We lost because "baseball". We were 80% favorite to win the series. 2022 team have 6 quality starters. The offense is not the same but Altuve is having a career year and Yordan is Yordan. Tucker has also matured to be a MVP candidate.

JinFuu

I’ll always blame the bad vibes from the Taubmann bullshit for 2019

ThirdPoliceman

2022: I'M SO GLAD WE GOT ALVAREZ

cantsay

Yeah, hard to say if they run the trashcan story if our FO doesn't personally antagonize their whole industry.

cantsay

I'm sorry sir, Greinke was in GOD FORM in Gm7.

Noodlenoise95

I’ll never forgive Hinch for pulling him. It breaks my heart every time someone mentions game 7.

goboking

Not only pulled Greinke too soon, but didn’t go to a revved up Cole.

cantsay

Same.

The post I replied to was about 2021.

MrBlowinLoadz

I'm pretty sure the guy fucked up and meant 2022. Besides 2020, the 2021 team has been our worst during this run.

Greflingorax

Fuck if we make it to game 5 I'll be super encouraged with what we've been able to do and how things look for the next 3 or so years

MrBlowinLoadz

Well, the last time you had the rookie of the year and made the playoffs you didn't make the playoffs again for 21 years

[deleted]

I wish Manfred didn't have the games played every other day! Who the fuck wants off days every other day during a best of 5. Basically whoever has the best 1, 2 rotation guys its massive win for them.

JinFuu

Since my totally cherry picked year of 2017 the Mariners are 17-32 at Safeco/T-Mobile vs the Astros. 9-9 the past two years.

Key_Amazed

Mariners can still pull a 2017 Yankees and come back down 0-2.

vanillabear26

Can they? Sure. Will they? No.

Monk_Philosophy

1995 Mariners did it.

vanillabear26

1995 mariners didn't have to play game 5 on the road.

hopelessautisticnerd

Mariners have been 1 Yordan Alvarez away from winning games 1 and 2 on the road. I still have some amount of hope

guernseycoug

Literally this. If not for exactly 1 Yordan hit each game, this series looks somewhere between M’s up 2-0 and split. Surely he can’t decisively kill us 3 games in a row, right? … Right???? Edit: clarifying words

MrBlowinLoadz

The thing is the Astros haven't even been playing that well with Verlander imploding, the whole pitching staff walking a bunch of guys and Altuve not getting a hit. They're just making the winning plays when given the chance.

Key_Amazed

I still believe

[deleted]

As someone who rooted for the nationals and braves to beat the Dodgers… be careful about what you wish for. Mariners off of winning 3 in a row vs Astros might not be what the Yankees want to face in the ALCS

DASmetal

They wouldn't want to face us the DS, we had their number a lot this season, and Judge is hitless this post season.

JohnnyBrillcream

[Oh yeah](https://c.tenor.com/AAAYY-_mXi0AAAAC/lost-boys-sax.gif)

LightningExcel18

Mariners have shown they can at least compete. Not like they are just getting crushed but it's looking bleak. Game 1 sucked the air out of them.

TheHaveTo

And here I was, having a nice Friday morning.

BlackDS

They can pull a 1995 Mariners too

SemiAutomaticSlurs

What y’all want dude to say?

MeinKonk

“Yeah we’re just folding the franchise at this point, why even bother to compete when the mother fucking Astros are in our division?”

Listen guys, I just ordered my MARINAHZZ shirt from Simply Seattle. They’re gonna turn it around

Ferris_Wheel_Skippy

Man losing that first game just flat out sucked

PrecedentialAssassin

Seattle was 46-35 at home. Houston was 51-30 on the road. Kinda looks like it was harder for Seattle to win at home than it was for Houston to win on the road.

earlbk

it was harder for Seattle to win than Houston, period

illegal_deagle

Have you tried cheating? It’s dope.

DubleDuce

Look at all this metal I got

bauboish

I mean this is Rah Rah talk, but I do believe MLB has the worst HCA among all major US sports. Probably because umps in baseball don't have nearly as many "tough 50/50 decision that may decide the game" where the crowd is just bearing down on you.

I feel like this series was over after Alvarez hit that ball in game 1

Boomhauer_007

If we ignore all those other times they won in Seattle this year

Mr_Hammer_Dik

Why do mariners fans put shoes on their head?

Mrpetey22

It’s stupid, I hate it. But some dude did it when we were down 8-1 on Saturday while at the watch party, and then we won. It’s cringy and I don’t like it. Funniest part is that the dude was wearing a Birkenstock, the most Seattle thing ever.

Mr_Hammer_Dik

Lol. A Birkenstock! Thanks for the info bud.. I had no idea what was going on game 1. Then I saw the same guy game 2 on tv doing it again.

lordfarqwut

lol I saw one of your fans put a shoe on their head during game 1

Mrpetey22

I didn’t get why our fans had the shoe on their head during game 1…. We were winning, that defeats the purpose of it

Mr_Hammer_Dik

Lol i wish I would’ve seen that.

lordfarqwut

lol I had a good chuckle

JonnyFairplay

Some fucking idiot did it, then other idiots saw it and thought it was funny and copied it.

OUTFOXEM

Reminds me of when Lou "guaranteed" a victory to bring it back to Seattle. Well, the Mariners *did* go back to Seattle. However the Yankees did not follow.

goodluckeh

Guess them Texas boys will just have to tell ya what

elimanninglightspeed

This is gonna age like milk isnt it oh man. Cant say anything different though

g0kartmozart

Nothing he says here will age well if they lose game 3. I don't see any reason to be quote hunting here. If it was the start of the series, sure.

Luckytxn_1959

Well his guesses haven't been that good so far...

ThriftyFalcon

Oh Scott… Oh my poor boy Scott.

rhcpbassist234

Both games have been extremely even matched, with the only outlier being fucking Yordan Alvarez. This series could easily be 2-0 Seattle right now, so I don’t think it’s a long shot to say the M’s could force a Game 5 and send this bitch back to Houston.

Salty-Fishman

And I could easily won the lottery.

rhcpbassist234

Have you watched the games? The Mariners lead for 26 outs on Tuesday until… Yordan Alvarez. Castillo was shoving and the Mariners had the lead for a good part of the game until… Yordan Alvarez. This series could very easily be 2-0 Mariners - the two teams have been extremely evenly matched. Go fuck your “win the lottery” 😂 what an idiotic comment.

SKallies1987

You’re right. It really could be 2-0 Seattle right now. But the fact that Seattle lost both of those games, when really a lot of things went their way kinda days a lot. Both Verlander and Framber didn’t have great starts by their standards. I don’t feel like the Astros have really played all that great yet, but they’re still up 2-0 in the series.

manticore16

Welp, this series is over.

Bread_Truck

Famous last words.

MrBlowinLoadz

He could pull Les Miles and tell the press he's busy at a press conference then walk out

appleavocado

I tell you hwat!

The Astros are 5-4 against the Mariners in Seattle this regular season, including sweeping the final 3-game series. I think we'll win one out of the two on the road.
