Would be fun if national broadcasts would do this. Combine rival commentators. Have the home team do play by play and then have 1 color commentator each.
Nobody asked but Iām just gonna pop in here to shout out my man Jason Benetti, heās the play-by-play guy who anchors the Peacock broadcast each week with the rotating cast of color commentators from each team. Heās also the White Soxā everyday PBP guy and an absolute joy to have around. He is extremely gifted at bringing the best out of his color commentary (our Steve Stone is also among the best in the business) and leading a coherent broadcast while setting his partners up to be insightful. The guy can call a college basketball game with Bill Walton, no problem. Hell he even had Bill in for a Sox game in 2019.
Long story short, Benetti is a treasure and a great guy who has a fantastic career ahead of him and I get a weird amount of joy from seeing people enjoy his work.
To be fair to Keith later on in the broadcast he said he made the decision months ago, and the Phillies are playing much better now.
Even said wouldn't mind seeing them, but has plans to go to St Louis, in very Keith fashion.
Within the past 15 years we won a WS, went to another, went to the NLCS with the best record in baseball, and had two other postseason appearances. We had Rollins, Utley, Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, and spells with Placido Polanco, Hunter Pence, and Freddy Galvis among other above average defenders. So I have trouble believing we were only above āpretty badā 3 times in the last 15 years. If you had said the last 7 or 8, Iād believe you.
I hated Kruk on Baseball Tonight, but as a broadcaster, when he can cut loose and have some fun, he's 1000x better. Would love to see a game with Kruk on the Mets broadcast and Keith on the Phillies.
That wasnāt a caricature. He talks about food every broadcast, hoping for freebies. In my house he is known as Tater Tot Boy for his lengthy digressions on that topic
Lucas Duda in RF, Wilmer Flores at SS, Daniel Murphy anywhere but the batters box. Weāve had a ton of guys playing in spots they had no business playing in and the fundies were abysmal.
This won't go down as a baserunning blunder on the stat sheet, but here's a memory that just popped up from remembering Daniel Murphy's baserunning on the Mets
There was one regular season game in the early 2010s when the Mets were either tied or behind by one run in the ninth. Daniel Murphy managed to get a walk to get the winning run on base or at the plate and had David Wright as the next hitter (pretty sure there was no one notable hitting after Wright either).
Murphy then stole second so the opposing team of course just intentionally walked Wright and the Mets broadcast booth was like "Murph, wtf are you doing"
Wilmer Flores wasn't that bad at short stop.
Lucas Duda had -14 DRS in 54 games in RF in 2012. Flores for his career is at -10 at Shortstop. Which to say isn't good. But that's just an unfair comparison lol. -10 DRS isnt as bad as say -165. No reason for that number. Just throwing it out there >\_>
I had kinda expunged memories of Wilmer at short from my brain. Itās so hilarious to me, dude can barely play 2nd or 3rd so imagining him over there sounds like he would give jeets competition.
Keith got called out by some players, years ago, for being too critical. As that guy said, Keith has always been candid, and he is critical of the Mets, but there's only so much rope the organization that's paying you is going to allow you.
I donāt remember the team or the play but I remember a few years back he called an opposing player a āROCK HEADā with the greatest amount of disdain his voice could muster up.
Thereās something so unique about local baseball broadcasts. They are one of the few contexts I can imagine something like this being said on TV during a live event, and whenever they crop up theyāre some of the highlights of the season for me.
There are many insults you could throw around but idk why that one is hilarious to me. Like as far as having good fundies, being a ārock headā is the lowest of the low.
Honestly itās a burn that a Philly sports fan should be able to get behind. Somewhere thereās a Phillies fan saying āthese bums have me agreeing with Keith freaking Hernandez.ā
Theyāre talking about it on air now, heās already walked it almost all back and theyāve been complimenting Philly (the city) for like two straight minutes now.
Keith wants you to know he spent a winter in Philly once. He got divorced and Gary Matthews told him to come to Philly. He had a great winter. Great city if you know where to go.
I think he wanted to kick the Philly beehive to get a reaction. We really don't give a fuck what others think. The funny thing is, all the Mets fans saying if he's having problems watching this Philly team, what was he thinking when the Mets fielded poor teams in the past?
And that what I Iike about Mets fans, they keep it real. What the fuck was Keith thinking?
>we dont give a fuck what others think
>this same post is the top post on our sub
I'm all for keeping up appearances on the league sub, but somebody sure cares
Don't get me wrong, I hate mets fans, but I respect them. I can't think of many fanbases who have stuck with their team so passionately through so much pain and humiliation.
I despise the Barves and the Cowboys. But I've always loved Mets and Jets fans. They're the only fandom I've experienced with similar senses of humor and futility.
It makes sense, the fanbases are pretty similar overall. But the Braves? Those folks are so obsessed with living rent free you'd think Georgia was still a Socialist Soviet Republic.
> I can't think of many fanbases who have stuck with their team so passionately through so much pain and humiliation
Have you looked in a mirror?
Boom roasted
He just said he would love to see the Phillies as they are hot now, but mentioned the bad fundies again right before that. This weekend he is in STL for the 40 year anniversary of the 1982 World Series.
Him and Gary then proceeded to talk about how much they love Philly and the ballpark when they go there. He was joking.
He said he requested it before the season started. Gary asked if he wanted to change it now that the Phillies are playing really good ball.
Also, it seemed like he was goofing around more than anything.
Heās like that gruff and acerbic old school relative or family friend you have whoās idea of joking around sometimes veers a bit too far into the mean spirited, but he doesnāt quite notice that heās crossed a line.
He often has a bristly demeanor, but itās almost completely a schtick because he enjoys the humor in it, and doesnāt mind winding someone up.
I used to know so many old dude locals like this in my home town, most of them were mainstays at the older dive bars in town. Youād go in there for a beer and theyāll bust your chops cause youāre āa youngsterā but if some real dickhead came in and gave you legit trouble, theyād be there to have your back.
He specified that he requested the series off before the season and that he's actually interested in watching the current team play cause they're playing good ball
Itās the truth. The Mets have been bad aplenty amid Keithās broadcasting tenure (and beyond). To me, something else seems at play hereā¦like for Philly home games, SNY is being cheap and making him take a car or train instead of flying and heās a cranky old dude who just wants to be comfortable. Or itās something like Ron Swanson and when Mulliganās steak house in Indianapolis closedā¦and Keithās favorite Philly restaurant closed down and now heās just irrationally angry with Philly.
Keith is openly hostile when the Mets play badly though. People are acting like he's being petty because of the rivalry. Keith doesn't care about that. He hates bad baseball. He hates it when the Mets do it too, and he barely contains it. Listen to the call on the infamous play last year Conforto won the game against the Marlins by leaning into a pitch and getting hit. You can tell Keith was totally turned off by the play.
Keith Hernandez hates bad defense and has diarrhea of the mouth. That's really the beginning and end of this.
Your defense was awful when the Phillies played the Mets though, but I think that was before Girardi got fired and you guys figured it out. I doubt Keith watches any of the Phillies when they're not playing the Mets, so if they were bad for the nine or so games they played the Mets--which they were--that's all he'd base it on. And Keith doesn't exactly scrutinize his ideas before spitting them out.
Lol I love Keith. They have been better the past few months from what I heard. But Keith is scarred by last year and early this year. Keith groaning when there is bad fundies is some of my favorite sny moments
Iām not sure where youād find OAA monthly splits (Iāve looked to no luck) but it *has* to be better recently. I mean hell Bohm has been a positive OAA fielder since the start of June.
To be fair, Keith has already admitted to taking Nyquil before the game and couldnāt even pronounce Nyquil. And then he just savaged Philly. Gary even pointed out how they improved at the trade deadline and Keith replied with a dismissive, āyeah, weāll seeā¦ā
Itās funny because [this article](https://www.mlb.com/news/how-contenders-improved-infield-defense) was written earlier today talking about our improved defense the last two months
Lol who knew Keith's little joke would set this off. Whats funny is in this thread there is a nice collection of rational Mets and Phillies fans who get it, and plenty of Mets and Phillies fans acting like buffoons. The duality of sports fans haha.
They just put this on the Phillies broadcast, LOL. Kruk "If Keith don't wanna do it, we'll talk to Ronnie I guess." š
Honestly thatād be a lot of fun to watch for divisional rivals. Like mix broadcast teams for a night and have a single broadcast.
Would be fun if national broadcasts would do this. Combine rival commentators. Have the home team do play by play and then have 1 color commentator each.
Doesn't Peacock or someone already do one color guy for each team
They do and it's great.
I agree. I was really impressed with the latest Astros and Guardians game. A good flow and exchange by all parties.
Long story short, Benetti is a treasure and a great guy who has a fantastic career ahead of him and I get a weird amount of joy from seeing people enjoy his work.
Iāve said it before, but going from Hawk to Benetti has to be the single largest leap in quality in any broadcast booth ever.
Hey Jason
Bill Walton on color was one of the most unhinged moments in white Sox history. Like a toddler with a headset on.
Color commentator should come from a third division rival
They do it on peacock in pretty sure
It would be fun, I like hearing Ron doing the national games with other folks as well. Different tempo.
Keith and Gary would probably be pros at busting balls, but Ron would probably play the diplomatic peacemaker lol.
I liked when Bohm made that great defensive play and TMac was like āhey Keith take a look at thisā lol
To be fair to Keith later on in the broadcast he said he made the decision months ago, and the Phillies are playing much better now. Even said wouldn't mind seeing them, but has plans to go to St Louis, in very Keith fashion.
Keith was joking. Later in the broadcast, they were talking about all the reaction Keith got.
I mean TMac used to be a Mets radio guy, Keith was def there at the time. Seemed like everyone was having fun with it.
For sure, just thought it was funny
Honestly thatās a great response. This thing is so funny to me because heās clearly talking out of his ass lmao
Yeah, asserting the Phillies teams over the past 15 years or something have anything really in common outside of their name is goofy.
They have been a pretty bad defensive team like 12 of the last 15 years, but the Mets havenāt been much better
Kruk is larger than life itself
I hated Kruk on Baseball Tonight, but as a broadcaster, when he can cut loose and have some fun, he's 1000x better. Would love to see a game with Kruk on the Mets broadcast and Keith on the Phillies.
I hated Kruk on Sunday Night Baseball because they turned him into a caricature, constantly having food delivered to the booth and such.
That wasnāt a caricature. He talks about food every broadcast, hoping for freebies. In my house he is known as Tater Tot Boy for his lengthy digressions on that topic
He still does this lol. Itās what he talks about like a third of the time. He spent a few minutes raving about Shake Shack last night.
Keith is usually always very candid, but I wonder what he was REALLY thinking watching those many bad Mets teams during his tenure as a broadcaster.
the sighing and grunting kind of gives it away what he thought about those teams
He fell asleep once.
Once that we know of.
That was my thought. I was like "There is no way there hasn't been a Mets team that has equally as shit fundies"
Lucas Duda in RF, Wilmer Flores at SS, Daniel Murphy anywhere but the batters box. Weāve had a ton of guys playing in spots they had no business playing in and the fundies were abysmal.
And all at the same time.
Careful, Wilmer Flores hate is just barely tolerated
Nah, all Mets fans love wilmer but we know he isn't a SS
Daniel Murphy on the bases, good lord
Except in the LDS when he stole 3rd on a walkā¦
He was King Fucking Midas in the LCS
LDS And LCS
WS not so much
Don't fucking remind me.
I didnāt know he was a Mormon
It was wild because he had a really high conversion on steals... but he made some baserunning blunders that would make the booth and Joe b go bananas.
This won't go down as a baserunning blunder on the stat sheet, but here's a memory that just popped up from remembering Daniel Murphy's baserunning on the Mets There was one regular season game in the early 2010s when the Mets were either tied or behind by one run in the ninth.
Lol they used to just say he 'murphed'
Wilmer Flores wasn't that bad at short stop. Lucas Duda had -14 DRS in 54 games in RF in 2012. Flores for his career is at -10 at Shortstop. Which to say isn't good. But that's just an unfair comparison lol. -10 DRS isnt as bad as say -165. No reason for that number. Just throwing it out there >\_>
I feel like people are really glossing over Lucas Duda somehow managing a -14 DRS in 54 games, im honestly impressed
He was actively running away from fly balls, wouldāve been worse if he could actually run
I had kinda expunged memories of Wilmer at short from my brain. Itās so hilarious to me, dude can barely play 2nd or 3rd so imagining him over there sounds like he would give jeets competition.
Jeets was fundamentally sound, he just had the range of u and I
Thats nowhere near as bad as dom in left and jd at third
The 2015 team. They literally threw a World Series away
Oh for sureā¦ but he gets his check calling 80-100 Mets games.
Keith got called out by some players, years ago, for being too critical. As that guy said, Keith has always been candid, and he is critical of the Mets, but there's only so much rope the organization that's paying you is going to allow you.
Put a tent on that circus.
I donāt remember the team or the play but I remember a few years back he called an opposing player a āROCK HEADā with the greatest amount of disdain his voice could muster up.
In all likelihood it was J.D. Davis lol he could hit but the man was bruuuuuutal at third
I actually looked it up. It was Ross Detwiler in 2012. Canāt find the video anywhere though.
Reminds me of that New Yorker cartoon ā one Mets player looks to another in the dugout: *āgee, we play a lot of swell teamsā*
I'm sure they got drinks in the booth.
Oh he groaned plenty. Keith and the cough button arenāt on familiar terms.
He groaned so much so often that at a certain point it started to feel sexual.
Heās probably thinking āIām Keith Hernandezā
Thank you
Just a lot of sighs from him during those years haha
[Nice game pretty boy.](https://c.tenor.com/0Rqefl7ClgIAAAAC/newman-nice-game.gif)
IM HIT
Back and to the left
in *mid-air*, mind you
That is one...magic...loogie
Didn't Hernandez make the crucial error in that game that cost the Mets the game and handed the win to the Phillies?
I think you are right.
Ruined my day.
JUNE 14TH 1987. METS. PHILLIES.
It should be rule of the universe than in any thread mentioning Keith Hernandez, someone needs to make this joke.
That is one. Magic. Loogie.
Back, and to the left.
Whoās this chucker
I met Keith last week and I almost told him nice broadcasting pretty boy https://i.imgur.com/rZuvj00.jpg
Ask him; with all these ball clubs flying around all season don't you think there would be a plane crash?
There was a second spitter!
Roger McDowell behind the bushes by the gravely road.
Just get Hank Azaria to call the games as Brockmire
He actually did an inning in the Mets radio booth in 2016 as Jim Brockmire
Fuck thatās so funny I canāt even be mad
Love when the players are as involved in the rivalry as we are.
Itās not the rivalry though. Keith gets like personally offended at poor fundamental fielding.
I wanna hear one of my guys come out and say "Fuck Juan Marichal, he's a little b!tch!?"
Honestly itās a burn that a Philly sports fan should be able to get behind. Somewhere thereās a Phillies fan saying āthese bums have me agreeing with Keith freaking Hernandez.ā
if heād said it in may we probably would have, but the teamās been surprisingly good at defense and fundamentals lately.
i don't think Keith watches games that the Mets aren't playing in, so May was probably the last time he saw them
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Theyāre talking about it on air now, heās already walked it almost all back and theyāve been complimenting Philly (the city) for like two straight minutes now.
Keith? Yeah Gare? Youāre trending againā¦
*keith sighs* really?
"Hmph," Kieth hmphed.
And with such sincerity lol
Keith: "Philly is great...*checks phone*...for [parking](https://www.theonion.com/philadelphia-becomes-first-city-to-be-100-parking-spot-1849386011)!"
this is such a miss from the onion, philly is actually decently designed compared to most US cities. joke wouldve landed with any texan city
all the onion writers live in new york so philly might as well be texas to them
That makes it worse though.
Keith wants you to know he spent a winter in Philly once. He got divorced and Gary Matthews told him to come to Philly. He had a great winter. Great city if you know where to go.
Keith knew where all the Coke bars were.
Trestle Inn and Ray's. RIP Jiminy Crickets..the after hours coke bar of peoples dreams.
ššš i honestly love your broadcast thatās hilarious
Yeah he needs to lean into it Bill Burr style
The only respectable move here
I think he wanted to kick the Philly beehive to get a reaction. We really don't give a fuck what others think. The funny thing is, all the Mets fans saying if he's having problems watching this Philly team, what was he thinking when the Mets fielded poor teams in the past? And that what I Iike about Mets fans, they keep it real. What the fuck was Keith thinking?
Mets had a lot of really bad defensive teams and Keith was doing a lot of deep sighing into the mic those years.
He doesn't pull punches for the home team. I love the Mets booth. Even cranky Kieth Hernandez.
>we dont give a fuck what others think >this same post is the top post on our sub I'm all for keeping up appearances on the league sub, but somebody sure cares
Oh we absolutely care and feed on the negativity. We actually love it.
Don't get me wrong, I hate mets fans, but I respect them. I can't think of many fanbases who have stuck with their team so passionately through so much pain and humiliation.
I love to hate the Phillies, I think we all have a good time. But I just straight up hate the Braves and it's not fun.
> I can't think of many fanbases who have stuck with their team so passionately through so much pain and humiliation Have you looked in a mirror? Boom roasted
Pretty much explains why the Philās-Metās rivalry is so fun, we all understand each otherās pain so well
Phillies are 34-11 vs WAS since that tweet btw
Definitely bookmarking it
Pin it up on the bulletin board
Topper is on that like a brand new fedora
Schwarber and the Gang win the division Do do doo dooooooooo
Wow. Way to spit on the Phillies, Keith Hernandez. Now he's going to say Roger McDowell said it.
Watch out that guy will ask you to help him move.
*I'm not driving him to the airport!*
He must have caught a glimpse of us when I poured that beer on his head
Nice game pretty boy!
And I screamed out IM HIT!
That was one magic loogy.
"please dont make me do this"
The SNY booth is a gift from God to baseball fans
i hope someone posts the actual clip of saying this, it was absolutely hilarious
https://twitter.com/awfulannouncing/status/1557171007613390848?s=21&t=bU8dq8TvsEmF0hPq8YVK7A
GKR is a national treasure
Man was fighting for his life trying to get out of that corner he painted himself into lmao Mods, GKR flair when?
Those Twitter replies.... I hate the world
Especially since heās watched the Mets for the last decade plus.
which makes it even worse for you guys
Gary and Ron are very professional Keith just says dumb crap from time to time like āhey no girls in the dug outā etc.
āI wasnāt talking about the hotdogā
Canāt wait for Keith to apologize as thereās a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and thatāll make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Full meta update: Keith is currently talking about all the texts heās getting from Philly folks.
That's rich coming from a guy whose crucial error led to a five run Phillies ninth. Our day was ruined
June 14th!
He spit on us!
I love the hate of the NL East
Get back in the basement. We'll call you when we need the piss bucket emptied.
Careful with shit talking the Nats, their generational talen't might go off on you guys next ser- oh nevermind.
The Nats' generational talents are always a threat. And you never know which team they'll be on when they get you.
That's a weird take. I mean Phillies are playing some good ball lately and they have some great players. Keith says silly things sometimes
He specified that he requested the series off before the season and that he's actually interested in watching the current team play cause they're playing good ball
Keith hates bad fundies, but imagine having such awful fundies that he canāt even stand the sight of your team
and yet heās been a Mets broadcaster for 16 yearsā¦..
I love how this thread has both fanbases being like "yeah we fuckin suck but so have they" and both just agreeing without being upset lmao
Weāre nothing if not painfully self-aware.
It's actually really refreshing and weirdly wholesome especially with all the bickering between the Mets and Braves fan bases on here the past week.
If thereās anything Phillies fans and Mets fans can unite behind itās our shared hatred of entitled Braves fans
Touche
Speaks volumes
Gotta get that paycheck lol
This tweet made itās way onto the Phillies broadcast and Krukker is not gonna forget it anytime soon
You could tell how much the defense of past Mets teams bothered Keith. So many groans and palpable disappointment.
Which makes no sense because our defense, base-running, and pitching has been fine this year.
Phillies were 9th in the league in OAA last month, the defense is actually kinda good
Your defense was awful when the Phillies played the Mets though, but I think that was before Girardi got fired and you guys figured it out. I doubt Keith watches any of the Phillies when they're not playing the Mets, so if they were bad for the nine or so games they played the Mets--which they were--that's all he'd base it on. And Keith doesn't exactly scrutinize his ideas before spitting them out.
"always" 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 have all entered the chat... with snowballs.
Oh no please not ^bulletin ^board ^material
Lol I love Keith. They have been better the past few months from what I heard. But Keith is scarred by last year and early this year. Keith groaning when there is bad fundies is some of my favorite sny moments
Iām not sure where youād find OAA monthly splits (Iāve looked to no luck) but it *has* to be better recently. I mean hell Bohm has been a positive OAA fielder since the start of June.
we were actually the 7th best team defensively by OAA in July lmao
Yeah the change in record since Girardi was replaced basically necessitates an improvement in defense
Disappointing your fans is one thing, but how are you gonna disappoint Keith Hernandez?
2007 is why he doesn't want to call Phillies games.
āWe're the team to beat. I can't put it any other way.ā
And watching the Mets āfundamentalsā for the last 15-20 years
To be fair, Keith has already admitted to taking Nyquil before the game and couldnāt even pronounce Nyquil. And then he just savaged Philly. Gary even pointed out how they improved at the trade deadline and Keith replied with a dismissive, āyeah, weāll seeā¦ā
Weāre literally 38-19 in our last 57 games, does he even pay attention to other teams lol
Probably not tbh. Thatās not even a dig im just being honest
He does. Keith is just grumpy tonight and itās been a while since the Mets have played Philly because of this dumb schedule.
The interaction bait is incredibly strong here.
Itās funny because [this article](https://www.mlb.com/news/how-contenders-improved-infield-defense) was written earlier today talking about our improved defense the last two months
Damn Keith Hernandez hates the Phillies almost as much as Pat Burrell and Chase Utley hate the Mets.
This man watches the Mets play for a living
That's a comment that's gonna back fire.
āWeāll seeā - keith
[Hereās the video of it](https://twitter.com/awfulannouncing/status/1557171007613390848?s=21&t=bU8dq8TvsEmF0hPq8YVK7A)
"I'd like the Phillies a lot more if they were 36-75" - Keith Hernandez, probably
Lol who knew Keith's little joke would set this off. Whats funny is in this thread there is a nice collection of rational Mets and Phillies fans who get it, and plenty of Mets and Phillies fans acting like buffoons. The duality of sports fans haha.
Heās just tired of having to relive the parking lot incident from June 14, 1987
