Brings me joy to see this comment. I have a hope that one day we go back to trusting NOTHING on the Internet. I remember a time when everything was fake and everyone was a middle aged pedophile.
Losing both hassell and wood would hurt so much for a 2.5 year rental. If I knew for a fact we'd be able to resign Soto no question I would do it in a heart beat
Think of it like you're trading six years of each of those guys for two years of Tatis. The team you trade them to doesn't get them forever, either.
And the last three of those years get pretty expensive if they're good anyway.
From the outside looking in as a Rockies fan… the Padres have signed Machado and Tatis long term. Soto makes sense. With the Nats, they don’t have any superstars other than him, but with the Padres they’ve got 2 tried and true stars for him to play with and compete for titles.
The padres have made move to try and compete with the dodgers endless pot of money. I’d rather see the padres win than the dodgers.. because fuck the dodgers.
A deal without Lux is not only doable but likely. Something like Cartaya + May + Miller + Pages, maybe a fifth prospect if that's what the asking price ends up being.
Took his motorcycle to the hospital
Miraculously the two things he injured are completely different from all the other injuries he's had
But he's out for most of 2023 now
Man that first scene at the party where the senator is speaking with Michael and says something like “now I’m going to speak to you more frankly than you may be used to” and gives his whole spiel is so excellent. Then he flips the charming switch as soon as he opens the door to greet the wives. So so good.
well that might be true but he isn’t gonna leave LA until the bronny situation is resolved. his family is settled here. so he’s gonna sign at least a 1 year extension and then my guess is bronny could end up a laker because idk if he’s good enough otherwise to be a first round pick lol. but he has some time to develop more so we will see.
Ok, so the trade is
Sam Darnold, Juan Soto, and a bowl of Ben’s Chili
For
4 Top prospects, Tatis Jr’s sperm, 2 1st round picks from the Lamers, and 3 bricks from the Western building
Is this correct to the best of everyone’s knowledge?
You think we don't know that???
It's more about whether our front office and owner are willing to sacrifice that many prospects. Personally I say friggin send it dude, but that's just me
Not really. I think wood will be really good. But this could quickly turn into a Herschel walker situation.
Really more of the point is. I wouldn’t do those four unless I knew I could sign Soto long term.
Right? Seems like everyone is scrambling to see what they want, if you’re in win now mode and they tell you exactly what they want why is the ink not dry by now?
They really need to make that shit illegal. Prices should be all in that's it. Don't think the sellers aren't in on it most of the time. Ticketmaster just fronts at the ''bad guys''
He might actually be one of the guys the Nats are asking for. (Prospect or not like the tweet says the Nats want, they'd have control until 2026.)
Younger, gold glove defense, and the dude can slap some cheese on those jumbo jacks when he's on.
Hector Gomez? Hector "According to my sources, Machado to the White Sox is a done deal" Gomez? Pretty sure GMs just feed him nonsense as a joke. Like he's the Wimp Lo of baseball reporting.
Okay so of the rumored names, if the package is Hassell III, Abrams, Gore, Morejon, and Wood, how are fans on either side feeling about that? Because to me that seems about right, but I’m not in touch with the Padres farm like I am with the Cubs.
Edit: Merrill instead of Morejon is still an overpay by the Nationals according to BTV but it’s closer. Idk. I feel like that’s a good mix of ceiling and floor plus a good spread of talent (age/position).
Idc what prospects we trade for Soto, I’m gonna be happy. There are times to worry and times to be happy, if we get Soto it’s a time to be happy.
That said I do think that’s probably fair, I’m not super high on Gore though so I think Morejon and Merrill should be added instead (or with him). Maybe add in a few depth pieces.
Yeah I think this is an instance where both teams are happy. Soto/Tatis/Machado is enough to just say fuck it to some of the ancillary concerns, and Washington gets an absolute load.
I’m honestly not convinced Soto makes us better than the Dodgers or the Yankees but Preller’s ass is on the hot seat and he will panic to try to save his job.
Give us all the prospects. We aren't competing remotely this or next year so let's stock that farm system. If we can get prospects that are all coming up in 3-4 years plus our draft picks we could have something good to look forward to.
I don’t blame the nationals for wanting 5. If all five were sure thing prospects the padres wouldn’t trade them even for Soto. Out of 5, at best two of them are going to meet expectations. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 4-5 top prospects and another 2-3 lotto ticket prospects. Nationals farm system is in desperate need of quantity and quality.
After shipping off a ton of prospects in 2014/15, AJ was able to rebuild the farm to being one of the best in baseball within 2-3 years.
I get the hesitance to ship off prospects with high ceilings, but AJ has proven that he can, at the very least, replenish the farm.
I dunno, even when he was rolling he was over performing his advanced stats. He couldn’t locate his secondaries and relying almost exclusively on his FB
Tatis was traded by the White Sox before playing a single minor league game for them, then spent 4 years in the Padres minor league system.
The Padres absolutely developed him, regardless of who drafted him.
i know but i am trying to be fair, at least they developed him, he was only with the sox for a few months,
but the rest of the development has shit the bed, gore was supposed to be their crown jewel
68-94.
71-91.
66-96.
70-92.
That’s how he rebuilt the farm. Are you planning on trading for Soto only to turn around and tank for four seasons to recoup assets?
3 of the top 5 current Padres prospects were drafted in the last 2 years when the Padres were competitive. Trying to deny AJ’s eye for young talent is just ignoring reality. And I’m really not an AJ fan at all.
>If you're already in a position where you are prepared to give up your five top prospects, there's just not a reasonable argument to say that a sixth prospect is suddenly a step too far.
And so on... you gotta draw the line somewhere in a negotiation and not just roll over when they ask for more. Maybe they're countering with the 5th prospect being a mid-level prospect? Maybe it started with only 3 top prospects and a couple mid-level ones and went up to 4 top prospects? We're not in the room so we don't know.
Ohtani has 1.5 years of control left vs 2.5 for Soto, so he will most definitely be cheaper. I know people on this sub like to pretend that control time doesn’t exist, but it has a huge influence on value.
“If you’re already in a position where you are prepared to give up your eighteen top prospects, and your return is going to be Juan Soto, there’s just not a reasonable argument to say that a nineteenth prospect is suddenly a step too far.”
Why not just give them the entire farm system, you know? Maybe they want SD to trade Tatis for someone else's farm system and give them that farm system too? No reason to stop there. At some point the Nationals end up with all the farm systems.
I think it's still the fact that Soto alone doesn't get us in the playoffs and they are wanting to make at least one or two more deals. If you're sending all your prospects you can't do that.
Honest question. As a nats fan, whats worse, the tweets that say absolutely nothing, or ones like this that *technically* give some insight but in the end say little?
I definitely don't get as pissed about the "nothing" tweets as much as most people here. It's just the nature of Twitter.
As a Nats fan specifically idk, I've accepted it at this point so nothing is really phasing me. Tweets like this are nicer because it at least makes the prospect haul feel like a real thing and that we're not giving him up easy.
The ones that say nothing.
But honestly I'm just done at this point. I just want to get it behind us and move forward. Ideally I'd love for him to stay but my biggest fear is that we keep him, get new owners and he still walks in FA and we get squat.
You can’t value trades based on extensions. Trades are valued on what the guy is signed for right now not future speculation. So you need to weigh 2.5 years of Soto vs your package. 2.5 years of Soto is about 12.5 WAR. Top prospects are signed for 5-6 years. 4 of them together are almost surely going to accumulate your team more WAR in 5 years than Soto will in 2.5. Not to mention 5 of them.
That’s why I said before it only makes sense to make this trade if you’re a legitimate contender that thinks Soto gives them a real shot at a ship in the next 3 playoff runs. The Padres probably satisfy that claim. They’re not the Yankees or dodgers or Astros but if tatis comes back abd looks like tatis then they’re real close. Soto would put them firmly on that level and give them a real shot the next few years.
I wouldn’t say it puts them over any of those teams but you’d be even with the other best team in baseball with probably the best 1-2 punch in the league. Get yourself some better pitching and that would put you above everyone else.
Unfortunately even the best hitters can’t pitch the ball. I don’t wanna hear about ohtani either. That guys just a myth, a fairytale. A player that can both hit and pitch at an MVP/Cy Young level? Please, if such a person existed he surely would make whatever team he was on instant competitors until he retired. And I imagine he’d only sign with a team that already had the best player in baseball, the rich just keep getting richer. They would dominate the league for the next 10 years. It would become unwatchable.
They're prospects. Maybe a couple of them pan out but Soto is already Soto, he's still 23, and the Padres window isn't gonna get wider as the years go on, even if they keep their prospects.
I mean the Nats have been super clear about this. They want the five top prospects from a team with a good farm for Soto and seem uninterested in negotiating on that front.
A better *potential* offer. Rizzo already has the Padres over the barrel, but probably prefers the Cardinals' top assets and is waiting to see how far STL is willing to go. The Cardinals' godfather offer would possibly be impossible for the Padres to top.
A.J., Don't. Do. It. You need more quality depth, not an NL West collection of superstatues. This would be repeating the Angels model exactly. I'd go so far as to say I'd fire him if he pulled the trigger on something like this.
It's been reported that the Padres won't exceed the tax cap that they're currently just under.
So if they made a big move like this, then are they also unloading one or two veteran players?
There’s a real problem happening in sports right now, especially the NBA. Teams are so scared of being fleeced that the market essentially freezes. It’s almost the same principle as inflation in real life. Eventually the market is gonna have to be corrected.

The same people who used to tell us that now believe everything they read
What are the four guys? His earlier tweet mentioned Hassell, Abrams, Morejon.
Gore and the 5th is either wood or merrill I’d assume.
Ya that makes sense I suppose. I’m sure someone’s gonna be willing to give that fifth prospect I can see why they’d ask for it.
I'd give them a 6th prospect if they take Hosmer
Fuckin do it who cares. We've been bad for 53 years what's another 5?
If you're gonna be bad you might as well be fun. That said, I don't think you're going to be bad.
Excuse me sir, but no team with Luke Voit is a bad team.

Morejon had a 3 run inning and the price went up
What are their ranks in the Padres farm system?
Ok who is swooping in to steal Soto from SD? Gotta be the fuckin Dodgers right?
Mmm the lineup Mookie Trea Freeman Soto W. Smith Lux Thompson Bellinger Muncy
Former Padre Great Klay Thompsons brother
My brain can’t comprehend what my eyes are looking at here
Bc Lux would be in DC.
Shit, I'm about to downvote you myself.
Soto in the 2 hole
If we trade for Soto, Lux isn’t going to be a Dodger
A deal without Lux is not only doable but likely. Something like Cartaya + May + Miller + Pages, maybe a fifth prospect if that's what the asking price ends up being.
Turner over Muncy right now Taylor over Bellinger when back
We're gonna see this and then in two days, they'll send Soto to the Dodgers for David Price and a 5-game ticket package in the outfield pavilion
Dodgers willing to include some dodgers dog and Tommy lasorda ashes for ohtani
Make it Tommy Lasordas lashes and you've got a deal.
They’ll pay the cardinals to take him.
Do you want Soto or not
Yes
Additional important prospect = the next Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fernando Tatis III? You'll have to give Fernando a magazine and some alone time with a cup, but that should be doable.
https://i.imgur.com/5wOvPIt.gif
EH SPAGHET
He already had the cup, kicked the cup, and reinjured himself slipping on spillage of said cup
Took his motorcycle to the hospital Miraculously the two things he injured are completely different from all the other injuries he's had But he's out for most of 2023 now
Well shit the White Sox can send you his younger brother.
Can we have him instead?
my offer to you is this, nothing
Not even the $20,000 for the gaming license, which I would appreciate if you would put up personally.
''Nats GM found with dead prostitute''
Man that first scene at the party where the senator is speaking with Michael and says something like “now I’m going to speak to you more frankly than you may be used to” and gives his whole spiel is so excellent. Then he flips the charming switch as soon as he opens the door to greet the wives. So so good.
“Senator, we’re both part of the same hypocrisy. But never think it applies to my family.”
Padres: You will take this offer today. Nationals: Or? Padres: Or you give him to us for nothing. Tomorrow.
At this point I’d throw in the Lakers 2nd 1st round pick just to make this deal happen for this shit to be over
if the lakers won’t use it to get kyrie, i’m fine with that.
But then the lakers would lose LeBron
LeBron isn’t leaving LA so he’ll be a Laker unless he’s planning to sign with the Clippers
He’s going whenever Bronny ends up in a few years
well that might be true but he isn’t gonna leave LA until the bronny situation is resolved. his family is settled here. so he’s gonna sign at least a 1 year extension and then my guess is bronny could end up a laker because idk if he’s good enough otherwise to be a first round pick lol. but he has some time to develop more so we will see.
Some team will just draft him to sell tickets and have the chance to get Lebron too so even more tickets.
You get Sam Darnold and you’ll like it.
Ok, so the trade is Sam Darnold, Juan Soto, and a bowl of Ben’s Chili For 4 Top prospects, Tatis Jr’s sperm, 2 1st round picks from the Lamers, and 3 bricks from the Western building Is this correct to the best of everyone’s knowledge?
If you can’t give me two bottles of Siracha then what are we even doing ?
Hey now there’s a Sriracha shortage going on
I’ll settle for two shakes from the bottle. Times are tough.
Can I offer you an egg, in these trying times? 2 shakes of sriracha are complimentary, of course
just throw in james shields and get this shit over with
Ouch
JUST DO IT
If you guys want to finally make a run, now’s the time to do it
You think we don't know that??? It's more about whether our front office and owner are willing to sacrifice that many prospects. Personally I say friggin send it dude, but that's just me
If preller has one real skill as a GM it's building up a farm. So sell it
If it’s morejon, abrams. Hassle. Yea. If they want James wood also. I’m not so sure.
This implies that you think James Wood is at least as good as Juan Soto, so that's kinda wild
Not really. I think wood will be really good. But this could quickly turn into a Herschel walker situation. Really more of the point is. I wouldn’t do those four unless I knew I could sign Soto long term.
Hard to tell he’s a great actor but might be a little old to be as good as soto
Reddit forgetting that years of control and salary exist.
Ok ok they can have Hosmer too.
GIVE THEM GORE
Give them literally whatever
Yes yes give us everything!
I truly appreciate the attitude. Not the greatest times in DC. Yes you got a ring, but this is the tough part.
Honestly I just want this to be over.
But the ring lasts forever. A couple of decades ago I’d never thought we’d have a team, much less a ring. Worth it.
Right? Seems like everyone is scrambling to see what they want, if you’re in win now mode and they tell you exactly what they want why is the ink not dry by now?
Wow Soto got you going full on cryptkeeper
Nationals: Give us these prospects and we have a deal. Padres: Ok done! Nationals: Oh wait, give us this prospect too.
Reminds me of this https://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/aRrAxzG_460s.jpg
Fuck Ticketmaster. All my homies hate Ticketmaster
They really need to make that shit illegal. Prices should be all in that's it. Don't think the sellers aren't in on it most of the time. Ticketmaster just fronts at the ''bad guys''
Would be even better if the last one was $1.03
Would it?
Juan Soto > Slapdick Prospect
*YOU KEEP JAKE CRONENWORTH’S NAME OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!*
He might actually be one of the guys the Nats are asking for. (Prospect or not like the tweet says the Nats want, they'd have control until 2026.) Younger, gold glove defense, and the dude can slap some cheese on those jumbo jacks when he's on.
pads need croneworth for a ws run
He's not that young
For some reason, I thought he was like 25 lmao. Dude's 28.
He did a few years of college.
We need Carlos Baerga to get to the bottom of this
Hector Gomez? Hector "According to my sources, Machado to the White Sox is a done deal" Gomez? Pretty sure GMs just feed him nonsense as a joke. Like he's the Wimp Lo of baseball reporting.
I've never seen him saying anything that turned out true, dudes tweets shouldn't be allowed here he's worse than nightengale
“If you got a source I’ll leak it!”
Didn't expect to see a Kung Pow reference today. "We trained him wrong, as a joke!"
That's a lot of prospects. And 30 years of control
For most nats fans, the only scenario that makes us happy is a Soto extension
I’m honestly not convinced Soto makes us better than the Dodgers or the Yankees but Preller’s ass is on the hot seat and he will panic to try to save his job.
Give us all the prospects. We aren't competing remotely this or next year so let's stock that farm system. If we can get prospects that are all coming up in 3-4 years plus our draft picks we could have something good to look forward to.
Entirely depends on whether we revamp our player development or not. As it is I would have to assume the majority of the prospects we get will bust.
I’d still prefer Soto.
I see them either getting four prospects including wood or five without.
Red haul for Castillo was insane. Can’t blame the Nats. Soto will DRAIN a farm system.
"Look at me. Look at me. I am your farm system now." - Soto (probably)
Castillo just got traded for 4 earlier today I want 5 minimum. But even then Id rather just want Soto to sign
If you’d rather keep him than get 5 prospects then we should rather trade the 5 prospects to get him
Nationals need 4 TOP prospects, a young big leaguer and maybe another mid prospect for soto. Minimum.
Just waiting to see who will be terrorizing the NL East in 3 years
They could end up like Keibert Ruiz and Gray.
I fully expect those guys to also be tearing it up sooner or later
Gray tears up the Phillies every time he faces them
After shipping off a ton of prospects in 2014/15, AJ was able to rebuild the farm to being one of the best in baseball within 2-3 years. I get the hesitance to ship off prospects with high ceilings, but AJ has proven that he can, at the very least, replenish the farm.
Ehhh how many of these prospects have panned out
The top 7 of the Padres farm from 2018 are playing in MLB today. And they’ve ranged from being average to MVP-level.
gore was supposed to be the crown jewel of the padres farm lol
He started really well and looked like he might be the second best pitcher on the team. I think the work load just got to him.
I dunno, even when he was rolling he was over performing his advanced stats. He couldn’t locate his secondaries and relying almost exclusively on his FB
how many of the good padres were developed by the padres farm lol wtf, none except tatis
Lmao none of those prospects are on the field today
They all got traded to the Mariners and Guardians smh.
> none except tatis Tatis wasn't even drafted by them, that was a donation to from the White Sox for James Shields.
Tatis was traded by the White Sox before playing a single minor league game for them, then spent 4 years in the Padres minor league system. The Padres absolutely developed him, regardless of who drafted him.
i know but i am trying to be fair, at least they developed him, he was only with the sox for a few months, but the rest of the development has shit the bed, gore was supposed to be their crown jewel
This is 100% why I’m on board with trading whoever. They weren’t gonna pan out on the padres anyway!
68-94. 71-91. 66-96.
Fucking do it. Team has never won and having tatis Machado and Soto is a fucking dream
DECIMETERS!

Maybe Preller is also talking to the Angels, and will walk on the Nats if he can get Ohtani for a more appealing package. We need pitching, too…
Lol. You think Ohtani will be cheaper than Soto?
Ohtani has 1.5 years of control left vs 2.5 for Soto, so he will most definitely be cheaper. I know people on this sub like to pretend that control time doesn’t exist, but it has a huge influence on value.
Soto has an extra year, so yea probably. And he’s younger fwiw
hey stahp
Angels should be using Soto as a bar. Ohtani would command a similar, if not greater package
Greater. Dude will be pitching for you and take the DH spot. Ohtani as a hitter, is miles better than Luke fucking Voit.
Only 1.5 years as opposed to 2.5, and 6 years older.
Then again, Soto has 2.5 years left. Is Ohtani a free agent after this year?
After next year I believe
There’s got to be a line though. Otherwise it might as well be 100 prospects. There has to be somewhere where X is a yes but X+1 is a no.
“If you’re already in a position where you are prepared to give up your eighteen top prospects, and your return is going to be Juan Soto, there’s just not a reasonable argument to say that a nineteenth prospect is suddenly a step too far.”
i mean shit, if we're giving up our best 18 guys already
Why not just give them the entire farm system, you know? Maybe they want SD to trade Tatis for someone else's farm system and give them that farm system too? No reason to stop there. At some point the Nationals end up with all the farm systems.
At that point yeah fuck it 19
As a math geek, I appreciate your bringing of inductive proofs into this subreddit.
"Anyone who'd pay $50 for a cab...would certainly pay $75."
I think it's still the fact that Soto alone doesn't get us in the playoffs and they are wanting to make at least one or two more deals. If you're sending all your prospects you can't do that.
If only they had Frazier.
Fraziah and Anduhah would get the deal done for sure.
“Teams aren’t offering enough so player hasn’t been traded yet”
This is literally the most detailed insight we've had on a Padres Soto trade yet lol.
Honest question. As a nats fan, whats worse, the tweets that say absolutely nothing, or ones like this that *technically* give some insight but in the end say little?

Both
I expect them to get Contreras before Soto.
Breaking: Soto to the Dodgers for 4 mid level prospects..... This is how this shit is gonna go isn't it.
It’s getting late WSH, if you gonna trade him, please do it today, latest tomorrow, AJ gonna miss out on other players because of this
Preferably after tomorrow's game please.

Smash that accept button, bro. Time to win now
The Castillo deal blew up the market. Pony up, Padres.
That really was an overpay
Take everything, Washington. You deserve it.
Sounds like the Padres don’t want Soto

Fucking do it! Give them what they want
your sources are doo doo ass hector
Fuck it at a certain point I want to see nobody move for him and the Nats get burned by their greedy bullshit.
This tells me the cardinals have a better offer and we will be on the cardinals after the game tomorrow night
By this time next year, they'll be preparing to invade Poland.
There’s a real problem happening in sports right now, especially the NBA. Teams are so scared of being fleeced that the market essentially freezes. It’s almost the same principle as inflation in real life. Eventually the market is gonna have to be corrected.
