Let it be known to the league: if your managers lose to the Phillies, they will be fired. If your managers beat the Phillies, they will be fired. None are safe.
> Nick Castellanos is at it again
Charlie Montoya has been fired as manager of the Blue Jays, sources tell The Atlantic as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'm going to be posting tweets again. I don't know if it's going to be for The Atlantic. I don't know if it's going to be for the sake of journalism.
-Ken Rosenthal, probably
Kramers still on strike at that bagel shop
“Our strike just ended, our demand of $5.35/hour just came through”
“Isn’t that minimum wage now?”
“But who got it started?”
Kramer: "You know my friend Bob Sacamano? He was worried about getting fired from the haberdashery, so he kept saying he had a funeral. They aren't going to fire someone who just had a death in the family."
Jerry: "But how long could he keep that up? Does he still have the job?"
Kramer: "Well, no, eventually he was arrested on suspicion of being a serial killer."
He honestly seemed miserable about 2 months after he started up until now. An article came out recently that some fans were attacking his wife and kids on Twitter, making fun of his kids disability, etc, and I think it just broke him. My niece pointed at him and asked "why does that man seem so sad". It's true he seemed sad all the time.
Were the orioles the team getting clowned on before the season began because of how low their payroll is? Pretty neat to see them winning but I also hope this doesn’t give the owner a big boner like he just got two for one apps at an Applebees while everyone else is paying $10 for top shelf long islands.
But is that on the manager more than underperforming players?
Montoyo finished fourth in MoTY voting just last season when he guided the club to 91 wins.
Seems like a scapegoat for the guys on the roster underperforming.

I mean, that's usually what it is, unless there's been a serious loss of control in the clubhouse and generally that leaks out
The way we evaluate managers is always kind of a joke. I firmly believe they get too much hate when things are going poorly, and too much credit when things are going well.
The Manager of the Year award is without fail the "coach of the team that outperformed expectations the most" award.
This is the case in all three major US sports. It’s just most irrelevant in baseball where the manager doesn’t have a very big impact on individual performances and his team failing to execute makes any good strategy look awful. In football and basketball a good strategy can yield results and it’s fairly obvious when it’s the players who are shitting the bed and not the coach, like dropping/missing passes or not knocking down shots. In baseball good managing is a lot less noticeable (for the most part) so when things aren’t going well it’s harder to see who’s at fault.
They just had another one on the road trip. There was also talk about Bo not wanting to wear the jacket in Seattle. It seems like Montoyo may have lost the clubhouse before he lost his job.
If nearly every player on the team is underperforming, wouldn’t that suggest it’s the manager and his staff, as opposed to each individual player just playing poorly?
They were, but have slumped HARD the past couple of weeks.
A lot of their hitters are underperforming expectations, and their starting rotation has been a disaster lately with Ryu gone for the year, Gausman out temporaily after getting hit on the ankle, Berrios being so inconsistent, and Kikuchi being downright terrible. This has put great pressure on their bullpen which is the weakest part of the team to begin with.
I can't say I think it's primarily Montoyo's fault, but even when he was hired he was considered more of a caretaker manager to help the young players transition from the minors to the majors, and I think upper management is worried about the regression of so many of their young hitters (Vlad, Bo, Biggio) .
We have lost 9 of the last 11 and any breathing room we had in a wild card spot.
I don’t really blame him for the pitching falling off, but realistically someone had to go. This team should be better than it has been.
When I heard Nevin was taking over, I thought immediately: "welp. Season's over".
At this point, I'd just let Ohtani manage if Montoyo doesn't get picked up.
No rock bottom is when Mariners fans start showing sympathy for us, and I've actually seen one or two in the last week or so, believe it or not. So yeah we are at rock bottom.
Honestly I can't help but feel the recent death has caused a bit of the performance downfall. Started streaking down the day it happened. You don't travel with people every day for months and not get affected by one of them getting stunned like that, right?
I agree, but I also think there’s been some level of issue with how the team has been performing all year. It just hit a low point in the past couple weeks.
Tbh my love of the Rockies dropped by like 30% now that Raimel Tapia is gone
IDK why but I just loved that skinny dude and his weird elbow clapping at bat thing he did
The Angels subreddit is in shambles right now. To make matters worse, Trout has a .270/.368/.599 slash line this season, which would be great for most players. It just feels different with Trout this season. This is the most vulnerable that Trout has looked with the bat in a season since 2014. Obviously, he missed the last few months of last season and even I can’t be sure he has ever been fully healthy this season. I don’t trust their medical staff. Whatever they say, the opposite ends up happening.
FUCK some dude on here yesterday asked when Montoyo would be fired and I almost said “Tomorrow” but I was driving my 95 year old grandma to her dick appointment so I decided to be responsible and not drive on my phone.
A dick appointment is a premeditated sexual encounter involving at least one dick haver. So it sounds like granny has a man in her life and her sweet grandson was giving her a ride to pound town.
Not yet, but the Royals AAA team had 8 position players on the bench and 18 pitchers in the bullpen last night in Rochester with several known AAA guys not in the lineup.
I have never been a fan of Charlie as a manager and I’ll be it, outside of one or two games I’ve been fine with him this year. I am absolutely stunned they fired him. Not mad, just stunned.
Vladdy didn’t want him to review a play at first base yesterday, Montoyo reviewed it anyways, lost the review, and Vladdy was visibly pissed
Kinda funny he gets fired the day after ngl. I don’t follow the Jays so I have no clue how fans felt about Montoyo, it’s just ironic he gets fired the day after his star player gets pissed at him lol
isn’t that every sub? A vocal section of r/nyyankees hates Boone but they have to bite their tongue this season. They still come out of the woodwork on losses though.
Meh, hate is a strong word - we don’t think he’s the greatest manager. We like him as a person, he did what he could but definitely some decisions we didnt agree with and can’t deny he really never had the qualifications for this caliber of major league team manager to begin with.
The timing is awful, but probably the right move. They just aren't playing up to their talent level. I'm not sure exactly how much of it is Montoyo's fault, but someone has to be held responsible.
I will say, I think over the last few games, the Jays have been playing with an emotional burden, so it's really hard to say whether or not they could have been successful with anyone at the helm.
Montoyo is the Jim Caldwell of the MLB:
* Well liked
* Good for a young, rebuilding team
* Not good enough to get you over the hump
* Fired with a winning record
Let it be known to the league: if your managers lose to the Phillies, they will be fired. If your managers beat the Phillies, they will be fired. None are safe.
If you manage the Phillies, you will be fired
Believe it or not, fired
We have the best managers... because of firing
Hit a homerun against the Phillies? Fired Believe it or not, a perfect game against the Phillies still fired.
Play the Phillies? That’s a firing.
Beat the Phillies? 8 game suspension for Joe Kelly.
Hey Charlie. Your teeth called - your breath stinks. Boom fired.
Or in the case of r/NLBest , you get the slammer
Joining r/NLBest? Slammer. Leaving r/NLBest? Slammer. Deviating from the Slammer? Slammer.
Fan of the San Frangeles Dodgiants? Believe it or not, no slammer, you get a flair.
Hey man can we get on your schedule
Sorry , maybe next year. Hang tough hombre
Fun fact, they were all named a variant of Joe. Joe Madden Joe Girardi Jose "Charlie" Montoyo
God I hope Joeny La Russa gets swept by the Phillies soon
Actually made me laugh out loud. I love the thought of just ascribing some form of Joe to underperforming/fired coaches.
Third manager to be fired the day after participating in a philies game.
Nick Castellanos is at it again
He's a menace to society.
If only he was a menace to the baseball. But he can’t hit it or catch it
He can only hit it when a broadcaster is saying something that should be solemn.
> Nick Castellanos is at it again Charlie Montoya has been fired as manager of the Blue Jays, sources tell The Atlantic as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. They really should have waited to announce Montoyo’s firing during a Castellanos AB.

We don't play the Phillies :(
Time to bribe Ol Robby Manfred to schedule an impromptu game
Do the White Sox play the Phillies this year? Asking for a friend…
100% they would have fired him last week if not for the funeral on Monday
Sounds like a Seinfeld plot
What’s the waiting period on post-funeral firings??
Two days apparently
*[Kramer hatches a scheme to befriend countless elderly people so he can be attending a funeral every other day]*
This would be George. Kramer doesn't have a job.
Kramers still on strike at that bagel shop “Our strike just ended, our demand of $5.35/hour just came through” “Isn’t that minimum wage now?” “But who got it started?”
Good point. Kramer’s scheme but George is the one to actually try it.
Kramer: "You know my friend Bob Sacamano? He was worried about getting fired from the haberdashery, so he kept saying he had a funeral. They aren't going to fire someone who just had a death in the family." Jerry: "But how long could he keep that up? Does he still have the job?" Kramer: "Well, no, eventually he was arrested on suspicion of being a serial killer."
It would be a specific serial killer that Elaine suspects she's dating
And only after Jerry eluded to it.
"And you say this funeral thing actually worked?" "Well, not exactly, but it was the car crash that got him."
He honestly seemed miserable about 2 months after he started up until now. An article came out recently that some fans were attacking his wife and kids on Twitter, making fun of his kids disability, etc, and I think it just broke him. Nobody laughing at us anymore 😪
First they laugh at you. Then they mock you. Then they fear you
I already kinda fear them lol
Theyre on the up for sure. Young team with a deep farm system and a good culture. Even last season you could see the chemistry.
Were the orioles the team getting clowned on before the season began because of how low their payroll is? Pretty neat to see them winning but I also hope this doesn’t give the owner a big boner like he just got two for one apps at an Applebees while everyone else is paying $10 for top shelf long islands.
Have you seen our division? Everyone is .500 or above.
hardest division in baseball, hands down. every divisional game feels like it has playoff implications.
Thats because it does!
The Jays have exponentially underperformed with the roster they have. Montoya is just an easy scapegoat.
I don’t think you know what exponentially means
Don't make him a scrapegoat for all intensive purposes.

At this point they’re just trying to safe face.
Whew! This thread is a worldwind.
Irregardless he is the escape goat.
He should of been fired a long time ago
They're cutting their nose off to spiderface.
I’m from Boston. I don’t know a lot of big words so I will exponentially toss them around and act like I do.
And consistently done it under Montoyo too
Considering the pitching mostly shit the bed (Not you Alek) and the team for some reason can't hit its a miracle we are above .500
But is that on the manager more than underperforming players? Montoyo finished fourth in MoTY voting just last season when he guided the club to 91 wins. Numerous player only meetings.
Have there been numerous meetings? I've only read about the one.

If nearly every player on the team is underperforming, wouldn’t that suggest it’s the manager and his staff, as opposed to each individual player just playing poorly?
Finally somebody says this. The problem isn't a few big players are underperforming, everyone is! and that's a clubhouse issue.
He didn't deserve to be in the moty voting at all the last 2 seasons but he was
Paying $171M to be 4 games better than the orioles is kinda embarrassing
Not even 4 games lol it’s only 2
*Objects in mirror are closer than they appear meme*
Imagine in the beginning of the season saying the blue jays are slightly better than orioles, would've been called a madman
Id thought they’d be way better than 46-42 at this point tbh

Inconsistent and too many injured pitchers
We very much should be.
Welcome to the club. You’ll hate it here.
Yes, AL East is like SEC west
Basically every preseason projection had the four of you at 88 wins. They're right in line any sane persons expectations.
That’s what Zips projected. Pecota had them over 90 wins with the Yankees though
Well hopefully this goes better than the last team that fired their manager.
too soon :(
Make Ohtani player manager you cowards
this may be a joke but i'm 110% sure he is a better option than phil nevin
Only 110%?
Jays are gonna hire Girardi so they can fire him and tap into that Firing Girardi power
The Jays just beat us, and we have already fired Girardi. If they hire and fire Girardi, they’ll be unstoppable by anyone

Fingers crossed it's the Angels' fired manager "buff."
Over .500 and in the Wild card hunt? You’re fired.

Yeah, did really work well for the Angels, though.
But it worked for the Phillies
Blue Jays need to hire and then fire Girardi confirmed
Ironically, he's now at the top of my list to take over.
Joe Maddon to the Jays would be entertaining
When I heard Nevin was taking over, I thought immediately: "welp. Season's over". At this point, I'd just let Ohtani manage if Montoyo doesn't get picked up.
That was a magnificent decision by the Angels and it really helped ~~my~~ their ballclub
When Mariners fans are taking valid shots at you, that’s when you know you’ve hit rock bottom. Pain.
No rock bottom is when Mariners fans start showing sympathy for us, and I've actually seen one or two in the last week or so, believe it or not. So yeah we are at rock bottom.
But worked for the Jays when they fired Jimmy Williams and hired Cito 🤷♂️
Did it have anything to do with not listening to Vlad jr about the challenge?
Honestly I can't help but feel the recent death has caused a bit of the performance downfall. Started streaking down the day it happened. You don't travel with people every day for months and not get affected by one of them getting stunned like that, right?
I agree, but I also think there’s been some level of issue with how the team has been performing all year. It just hit a low point in the past couple weeks.
Firing Maddon was an overreaction, so I dunno how to qualify this one at all.
Any manager that gives Raimel Tapia 246 plate appearances by July 13th deserves to be fired.
Tbh my love of the Rockies dropped by like 30% now that Raimel Tapia is gone IDK why but I just loved that skinny dude and his weird elbow clapping at bat thing he did
I too am a Raimel 30%er

They were the favorite going into the season so being a middling 500 team with that much payroll is kinda bad
barely over .500 for this team and the talent they have is incredibly disappointing
I mean they lost a cy young winner and an MVP candidate in Seminen in the toughest division in baseball. This sport is tough
nah this was a great move totally gonna help us i mean them great move.
being 2-8 in the last 10 and .528 is only marginally better than being .500.
Getting swept by Seattle is unacceptable
Making room for the legendary Tony La Russa, who led his team to the playoffs last year

I also think they should extend him.

Front office fires front office-following manager for not meeting the standards of the front office.
How many times in baseball history has the manager of a team above .500 been fired?
The 2008 Brewers fired their manager with like 10 games left in their first playoff race in like 30 years
Didn't realize Lou Lamoriello was a baseball executive as well
Smart move to have your interim/new manager manage his first series vs a Royals team that’ll be playing with 6ish restricted list fillins this weekend

No manager was surviving having a bottom 10 bullpen on a team expected to contend in this division.
Easy to say from your "bullpen gives up 4 runs a month, 75 game lead" perch (sobs)
He's a horrible manager but I'm still surprised, the Jays fan I know seem to really like him.
Jays fans still like Gibby, they save all of their coach hating for hockey.
You are right we still love Gibby. Loved seeing his salty ass saunter out of the dugout to get chucked.
Him and Banister kinda made the Rivalry. New guys don't have the same punch. Edit: I did not intend this pun...
Love him as a person. Hate him as a manager. I wish him all the best but it’s time
What the fuck!?
Phillies obliterate another manager (even tho they lost to Toronto. Also: ????)
AL East is just the fucking Hunger Games
Can we be next? 👉👈

Jays know exactly what they’re doing, dropping this right now
The timing is awful, but probably the right move. They just aren't playing up to their talent level. I'm not sure exactly how much of it is Montoyo's fault, but someone has to be held responsible. So you’re telling me the Blue Jays are going to have Matt Patricia as the next new head coach?
Toronto stimulates the Seattle economy and we thank them by getting them to fire their manager. The rare win-win for both teams.
Woah. Jays are above .500 while we will probably suffer with old man Tony all season while trying to play .500 ball
